Harry Potter and the Secret Treasures

Do you believe in luck? Do you think of yourself as a lucky person?

Not everyone believes in luck, but they cannot deny that there are always many unexpected things in life.

From the moment of birth, everyone faces countless such uncertain changes until they eventually return to the embrace of death.

Some of these changes make your situation better, while others make things worse.

The probability of encountering good or bad things — that is what we call luck.

The whole class listened to Slughorn with rapt attention, their eyes fixed on the golden liquid in the cauldron.

In a sense, Felix Felicis was a very miraculous potion.

Since there was no way to deny the existence of luck, people throughout history had been seeking ways to make themselves luckier.

Everyone had their own way to improve luck, such as choosing numbers, colors, patterns with special meanings, etc.

This kind of thing was very common among both Muggles and wizards. This was also the reason why prophecy and divination were born. Wizards hoped to foresee the illusory future through magic, and then make the right choice to avoid evil and disaster.

But none of these methods were foolproof; they were fraught with uncertainty.

Luck and the future share one thing in common — they are inherently unpredictable.

However, with Felix Felicis, luck was no longer illusory.

It became something that could be actually improved. Taking Felix Felicis would make people luckier and encounter good fortune.

This potion was extraordinary — almost miraculous. To a certain extent, it could even change a person’s life.

Making a “lucky” choice at a critical moment could change things dramatically.

Felix Felicis was a potion that made you lucky — a potion capable of transforming your life and future.

“Have you ever taken it, sir?” asked Michael Corner with great interest.

“Twice in my life,” said Slughorn, gazing dreamily into the distance with a nostalgic look on his face. “Once when I was twenty-four, once when I was fifty-seven. Two spoonfuls taken with breakfast. Two perfect days! Believe me, that’s life, that feeling of having everything under control, and being able to succeed in whatever you do…”

There was a sense of longing in his voice. Whether he was playacting or not, the effect was alluring.

“Alright, alright!” said Slughorn, apparently coming back to earth. “Let’s continue the lesson. Ah, and that is what I shall be offering as a prize in this lesson. Let me remind you, this potion is nearly impossible to buy outside, so this is a rare opportunity!”

There was silence in which every bubble and gurgle of the surrounding potions seemed magnified tenfold.

“One tiny bottle of Felix Felicis,” said Slughorn, taking a minuscule glass bottle with a cork in it out of his pocket and showing it to them all. “Enough for twelve hours’ luck. From dawn till dusk, you will be lucky in everything you attempt.

“However, I must give you warning that Felix Felicis is a banned substance in organized competitions … sporting events, for instance, examinations, or elections. So the winner is to use it on an ordinary day only … and watch how that ordinary day becomes extraordinary! I promise it will be a day you’ll never forget.”

Felix Felicis, after all, only made someone luckier to a certain extent, nudging things in a favorable direction. It didn’t mean that consuming it would ensure success in everything, especially for endeavors destined to fail — such as Malfoy’s attempt to assassinate Dumbledore or Harry killing Voldemort. No matter how much Felix Felicis was consumed, it wouldn’t change the outcome in such cases.

Nevertheless, Slughorn had achieved his intended effect. Every student was now brimming with interest — not just in Felix Felicis, but also in his class and how to win this coveted little vial.

As for Evan, his interest in the potion wasn’t particularly strong. After all, he could brew it himself.

The real challenge of brewing Felix Felicis lay not in its complex process but in sourcing the rare ingredients. Some herbs required were so scarce that they were snatched up the moment they appeared on the market, often at exorbitant prices, only to be stored away by collectors.

This wasn’t an issue for Evan. Let’s not forget that Kreacher had raided Snape’s herb storeroom and delivered all its contents to him.

Though Snape didn’t seem wealthy, his collection of potions and ingredients was undeniably extensive…

And judging from the current situation, Evan felt he was lucky enough, and the things he wanted to change were not something that could be affected by Felix Felicis.

If Snape’s textbook really worked, then Harry should get this small bottle of potion. This was what Evan really cared about. Getting a copy of Snape’s research notes on potions was much more valuable than a fleeting dose of Felix Felicis.

“So,” said Slughorn, suddenly brisk, “how are you to win my fabulous prize? Well, by turning to page ten of Advanced Potion-Making. We have a little over an hour left to us, which should be time for you to make a decent attempt at the Draught of Living Death. I know it is more complex than anything you have attempted before, and I do not expect a perfect potion from anybody. The person who does best, however, will win little Felix here. Off you go!”

As he finished speaking, there was a scraping as everyone drew their cauldrons toward them and some loud clunks as people began adding weights to their scales, but nobody spoke. The concentration within the room was almost tangible.

Evan worked steadily and calmly, preparing his sopophorous bean while keeping a watchful eye on Harry.

Unlike the others, Harry didn’t dive straight into brewing. Instead, he frowned as he studied the battered textbook, looking puzzled.

To Evan’s left, Hermione progressed much faster than usual.

It could be seen that she wanted to get that small bottle of Felix Felicis, and this year’s Christmas gift would be secured!

Hermione’s birthday was on September the nineteenth. Considering the time needed to brew Felix Felicis, it would likely be impossible to finish it in time and give it to her as a birthday gift. It would have to wait until Christmas instead. As for her birthday gift, Evan could always gift himself to Hermione — perhaps by turning into a cat and hiding under her blanket to surprise her…

Unlike Evan, who was leisurely, Harry felt like he was going crazy. Frustrated, he glared at the textbook in front of him. He had initially thought it was just a bit dirty and worn, but he found that the previous owner had scribbled all over the pages, so that the margins were as black as the printed portions…
