Chapter 636: Chapter 633: Bizarre Question

Soon, the group began their march, gnawing on the meat in their hands to stave off hunger, while their feet never stopped, displaying a sense of urgency as if every second counted!

...

Xiao Tian and Ghost Face walked ahead, carrying large and small backpacks. Lin Bingxuan and Melinda, on the other hand, traveled light and walked side by side at the back.

Since Melinda had the assistance of True Qi, and Lin Bingxuan was using Endless Life without feeling fatigued, they chatted and laughed together, lightening the otherwise heavy atmosphere.

”Old man, you’d better put down what you’re holding!”

A man’s voice came from afar, with a very awkward accent, causing the four on the journey to pause.

”Foreigner?” Ghost Face couldn’t help but frown and then turned his gaze towards Xiao Tian.

”Whether foreigners or aliens, we still have to keep moving forward!” Xiao Tian chuckled, ”The voice came from ahead; we can’t possibly detour, can we?”

Ghost Face pondered for a moment and nodded, ”Even with the guidance of the pendant, without worrying about losing our way, if we start to detour now, the distance doesn’t matter as much. But if we encounter a towering mountain just as we reach the end, it’ll be truly frustrating!”

After thinking for a moment, Lin Bingxuan said, ”I also think we should stick to the main road. That way, even if we make a mistake, everyone makes the same mistake. Detouring has too much risk!”

Off to the side, Melinda smiled as she glanced around, indicating she shared the same thoughts as the others.

Since they decided not to detour, the group moved forward with determination, quickening their steps.

Five minutes later, they saw the source of the sound: an elderly man with a wrinkled face, carrying a basket on his back, with a thumb-thick hemp rope tied at his waist, hanging in mid-air with a terribly grim expression.

Beneath him, a blond-haired, blue-eyed foreigner kept shouting, demanding that the old man hand over the herbs in the basket.

”Old man, don’t be so ungrateful, or not only will the herbs be ours, but even your life won’t be your own to command!”

”Our patience is limited, so you’d better hand over the goods quickly, OK?”

”Old geezer, will you hand it over or not? Give us a straight answer. Do you think it’s fun dragging this out?”

Seeing the elder in mid-air remaining silent, a middle-aged man in his thirties with a topknot showed an impatient expression and tilted his head slightly.

Seeing the action of this man, resembling an artist, four people split into two groups and ran in completely opposite directions, seemingly aiming to circle around to the mountain top.

The four who had left the group were clearly not ordinary people. In just a few minutes, they appeared at the top simultaneously and nodded at the man with a topknot.

Seeing everything in place, the man with the topknot shouted to the elder in mid-air, ”I’ll give you one more chance. If you still don’t cooperate, look above your head...”

The old man squinted and looked up, immediately spotting four malicious-looking foreigners, all grinning menacingly at him. After making a throat-slitting gesture, they laughed mockingly, as if teasing a pet.

A sense of humiliation suddenly surrounded the old man’s heart. Looking at the distance of at least five meters to the ground, he couldn’t help but feel terrified.

It wasn’t the fear of death, but the five-meter drop from the air to the snowy ground. While unlikely to be fatal, broken limbs were certain.

For an old man who has lived his life gathering medicine, this would be a devastating blow, more painful than direct death.

After all, cutting off one’s livelihood is quite different from ending one’s life; despite seemingly only a difference of characters, the two are fundamentally different matters.

With no response for quite a while, the man with the topknot was about to order his subordinates on the mountain top to cut the elder’s rope.

Just then, an Asian-faced man approached with a fawning expression, ”Boss, don’t be hasty. Why not let me try?”

The man with the long hair furrowed his brows, showing a disdainful expression, ”You?”

Seeing the response, the Asian-faced man’s sycophantic expression grew even more pronounced, as if receiving a great favor, he replied, ”You may not know, but I am also from Huaxia, and I understand the Huaxia People well.”

He paused, seeing no interruption from the other, then continued, ”That old man appears tough now, but his heart must be weak. If we give him an opportunity to save face, he’ll surely give in.”

The Asian man’s words made the leader raise an eyebrow, ”Are you sure?”

”Absolutely sure!”

The Asian man bowed deeply, displaying a highly submissive posture, ”Huaxia men, regardless of age, value their face more than their lives, so he’s just trying to save face now!”

”Hmph!” The leader brushed his long braid back and patted the Asian man’s face like he was handling a lower being, asking, ”Why don’t I see that trait in you?”

The smile on the Asian man’s face immediately stiffened, then he hurriedly replied, ”That’s why I feel ashamed as a Huaxia person, but such matters aren’t for me to choose!”

”Hahahahahaha!”

The Asian man’s words immediately caused the surrounding foreigners to burst into laughter, some even clapping, laughing so hard they couldn’t straighten their waists, though anyone could hear the ridicule and contempt in the laughter.

”Can I ask you a question?” The leader’s mouth also held a trace of mockery, though from his words it sounded like a question, the commanding tone was unmistakable.

”Go ahead!” The Asian man nodded repeatedly, ignoring the surrounding laughter, waiting seriously for the leader’s question.

”What benefit does this achieve?”

This statement left not only the Asian man puzzled but also surprised Xiao Tian and others hiding nearby. The logic of these foreigners seemed completely off!

Clearly, he was doing this for them, yet as the principal beneficiary, he still wanted to solicit benefits from the other—does such a thing exist in the world?

”This...” The Asian man was momentarily at a loss for words. As a bottom-tier person, he wanted to seize every opportunity to climb up, yet he couldn’t fathom why the other would ask such a bizarre question.

Seeing his tongue-tied state, the leader chuckled lightly and said, ”We’ve wasted enough time, enough to seize the next Medicine Gatherer. If you still want to persuade the old man, then tell me, what benefits does this achieve?”

The Asian man finally understood the leader’s point and immediately showed a knowing smile, then said, ”Think about it, the old man lives off gathering herbs. If we send two people to follow him, won’t the herbs collected all be ours in the future?”
