Chapter 589: Chapter 586: Wang Peng’s Disappointment

Just as he was immersed in mixed emotions, a phone ringing pulled him back to reality. The call was from his father—Wang Peng.

As soon as the call connected, Wang Peng’s slightly hoarse and tearful voice immediately came through: ”Bin’Er, you, you finally made me proud for once! I saw it all on TV, well done! Keep it up!”

Hearing his father’s choked voice, Wang Bin felt a jumble of emotions in his heart. If he were to know the real reason he went to that place, would the old man faint from anger?

Feeling irritated, Wang Bin naturally didn’t have anything nice to say and immediately replied impatiently, ”Alright, alright! You called just to talk about this?”

On the other end, Wang Peng, hearing his son’s impatient tone, glanced at the birthday cake on the table and couldn’t help but ask, ”Bin’Er, do you remember what day it is today?”

”What day?” Wang Bin was taken aback, then directly shouted, ”I don’t even know the date today, how would I know what day it is? If there’s nothing else, I’m hanging up.”

Wang Peng listened to the busy tone of the ”beep beep beep”, and for a moment, his eyes turned slightly red.

His elegantly dressed wife beside him advised, ”Don’t mind him, after all, there’s finally a sign of change in our son, right?”

”Yes, yes!” Tears welled up in Wang Peng’s eyes, and his old face constantly changed expressions, uncertain if he was sad that his son forgot his birthday or happy that he showed signs of improvement.

”Eat, eat cake!” Wang Peng’s trembling wrist cut a piece of cake and handed it to his wife beside him.

His wife watched Wang Peng’s actions and couldn’t help but start sobbing first. Once upon a time, this stalwart man was so bold, but ever since they had this precious son...

His wife sighed, wiping the tears from her face: ”Alright, we’ll eat cake!” But in her heart, she couldn’t help but wonder if she would’ve had that incompetent son if she had foreseen this situation.

Unfortunately, there weren’t so many ’ifs’ to choose from!

In fact, given the Wang Family’s status in Qing Province, even if the old master were still alive, Wang Bin as the patriarch could still organize a grand birthday banquet in the family’s name.

But sadly, due to Wang Bin’s attitude, this once-heroic man was too ashamed to hold a birthday banquet. If even his own son doesn’t attend, how could he expect outsiders to?

Thinking of this, Wang Peng couldn’t help but start pondering how his son would cope if he lost his position as the patriarch of the Wang Family.

However, at this moment, he could only console himself with the hope that Wang Bin would eventually change for the better!

——

After eating and drinking their fill, Melinda and Xiao Tian began to prepare to gather information separately, focusing primarily on whether any strange people had come recently or any new rumors.

The two walked out of the small restaurant side by side when a surprised voice rang out: ”Big Brother!”

Xiao Tian and Melinda looked toward the source of the voice to see a little girl carrying a sugar-coated haws stick as tall as herself, running toward them with a face full of joy.

It wasn’t long before the little girl ran up to them and stopped, and Xiao Tian couldn’t help but show a warm smile, squatting down to pat the little girl’s head: ”How’s business today?”

”Great!” The little girl replied, then with her hand, fished around her ponytail before showing her open hand to Xiao Tian.

”Big Brother, you gave me one yuan too much last time!”

Melinda looked at the one-yuan coin, feeling somewhat puzzled, but Xiao Tian just chuckled, holding the girl’s little hand, and then took out three more coins from his pocket.

Then, he took the remaining four sugar-coated haws sticks from the bunch, saying with a smile, ”Each of us can have one, and you and your sister take one each too!”

Seeing the little girl hurriedly refusing, Melinda took a closer look at the dirty little face and squatted down as well, softly saying, ”This is our first meeting, so consider it a treat from your sister!”

”Well, well...”

Seeing the little girl still trying to refuse, Melinda pinched her nose: ”When you grow up, you can treat your sister once, right?!”

The little girl nodded with a flushed face, bowing, ”Thank you, Big Sister!”

Watching Melinda walk off with the little girl, Xiao Tian also began his efficient actions, turning down a small alley and following the pre-determined route for inquiries and investigation.

...

On the other side, Melinda, holding the bunch of sugar-coated haws with one hand and placing the other on the little girl’s shoulder, walked to the roadside, appearing quite close.

”Big Sister, are you Big Brother’s wife?” The little girl asked, looking up at Melinda with her sugar-coated haws in hand.

But she found that Xiao Tian had disappeared at some point and curiously asked, ”Eh, where’s Big Brother?”

Melinda smiled and replied, ”He has to leave for a bit. Should sister escort you home?”

The little girl shook her head, waving her hands: ”No need, my house is very close, I can go home myself!”

Watching the little girl reluctantly say goodbye to her, Melinda suddenly asked, ”Wait, could you answer some questions for sister?”

Hearing Melinda’s request, the little girl skipped back, nodding happily, but asked first: ”Big Sister, you still haven’t answered me. Are you Big Brother’s wife or not?”

Melinda was stunned for a moment, then blushed slightly and whispered like a mosquito, ”Mhm!”

Hearing Melinda’s affirmative answer, the little girl cheered, ”I knew it, only a pretty girl like you can marry someone as handsome as Big Brother!”

”Alright, alright!” Melinda laughed and redirected the topic: ”Have you seen any strange people recently? Or heard any interesting rumors?”

”Hmm... A lot of foreigners have come by recently.” The little girl thought for a moment, then her eyes lit up: ”Oh, I heard them talking when I was selling sugar-coated haws one time...”

As the little girl spoke, Melinda’s beautiful eyes sparkled. She didn’t expect that a casual question would actually find the right person!

...

In the evening, when the two met again at the small restaurant where they had lunch, Xiao Tian was surprised to find that Melinda had been waiting for some time and seemed quite smug!

”What did you find?” Xiao Tian sat across from Melinda and asked directly.

Melinda instead replied, ”You go first. What did you find out on your side?”

”People here, you can pick any at random, and they’ll tell you one or two mythical stories.” Xiao Tian said, ”But, at the foot of Kunlun that’s not unexpected, but if you’re asking for anything useful...”
