Reborn As Noble

Chapter 894: The Price of Delay ( 894 )

Javier didn’t spare them another glance.

He just lifted one finger.

The battle drones responded instantly.

A merciless storm of mana bullets tore through the last of the bandits and rogue mages. The gunfire rang out sharp and brutal, then died into thick silence.

Javier snapped his fingers.

The puppet knights moved in without a word, starting the grim work of cleanup. They laid out the dead with quiet efficiency, giving even their enemies the dignity of a proper burial.

Behind him, Liana approached, her voice soft. ”Young Master...”

Javier just stood there, back turned to everyone. Both hands stuffed deep in his pockets.

”Why’s everyone so damn stupid?” The words came out quiet. Tired more than angry. ”Just ’cause your life falls apart once doesn’t mean it’s over. It’s never the end...not unless death’s actually knocking on your door.”

He stared down at the blood-soaked ground, shoulders tight. ”Why do they always go criminal? Why throw it all away just ’cause things got rough? There’s so many ways to live honest...”

Liana started to say something, but the words caught in her throat as Javier kept going, voice soft but hurting.

”Even in this world , ex-convicts get another shot. There’s tons of ways to make a living. Become an adventurer. Hunt monsters, earn coin, build yourself back up. Get stronger, climb the ranks, earn some respect.” He shook his head. ”There’s always another way.”

He closed his eyes, letting the quiet stretch out, that bitter ache still hanging in his voice.

Behind him, Liana lowered her head, fingers curling into her palms. She’d seen it before, people who’d rather burn than bend. Sometimes it didn’t matter what you offered them. They’d still choose their own destruction.

”If you live under a lord who oppresses his own people, you can move to another territory. Find somewhere a noble actually cares for his people. There’s always a choice. No one forces you to stay where you’re mistreated.”

Javier’s voice was calm, but his words hung heavy in the air.

”And if you can’t bear to leave because you’ve lived somewhere so long, if the memories, the land itself, are that precious to you, then all the more reason to work honestly. To rebuild. To protect what you love, not become the very thing that destroys it.”

He glanced sideways, sadness and disappointment etched across his face. ”But instead, they let pride and despair twist them. They’d rather destroy everything than endure a little hardship and change.”

”Then they start killing the innocent. If they fought and killed enemies in battle, that’s just how this world works. But slaughtering innocent people? Just for a handful of coins?” Javier’s voice tightened, cold and heavy. ”It’s not even worth it. It’s pathetic.”

He stared out across the battered town, eyes narrowed with a quiet ache that cut deeper than anger. ”If you’re willing to become a murderer for such a cheap price... you’re already lost.”

He exhaled slowly, shoulders dropping as the last echoes of battle faded into silence.

”There’s nothing left for people like that. They threw away any chance to start over the moment they turned their blade on their own.”

Javier glanced at Liana, Gloria, Felicia, Mimi, and Delya. ”How are the remaining survivors holding up? The ones we could save?”

Liana answered quietly, ”They’re all safe, Young Master. The Armand troops are handling everything, making sure everyone’s treated gently and given what they need. But the women...”

She trailed off. Javier’s expression hardened, his silence speaking louder than words.

”That’s the problem with people who choose evil,” he said at last, his voice low and cold. He gestured toward the lifeless bandits his puppet knights were now gathering. ”That’s why none of them deserve a second chance... not from me.”

Javier walked with a firm, steady stride toward the shattered gates, his presence unmistakable, every step radiating quiet authority. Buddy trotted close behind, chest puffed out and eyes bright with pride, mimicking his master’s confidence with each smug step.

Javier stopped at the ruins of the gate, his gaze sweeping across the Arjam soldiers still locked in their shield formation. His eyes were calm, yet the air around him seemed to thicken with the weight of absolute command.

He spoke, his voice cool and unwavering.

”I assume you all want to fight me?”

A chill ran through the Arjam defenders. Shields trembled in their grip as crushing pressure settled over them, the presence of a young man who commanded magic and weapons none of them had ever witnessed.

One by one, their resolve broke. Shields lowered, knees buckled, and heads bowed in fear and respect.

Javier walked forward, each step steady and unhurried. Buddy trotted behind him, head held high, tail flicking smugly as if he owned the road. The last defenders parted wordlessly, clearing a path for the young noble and his massive Pekko.

Javier strode past them without a glance, his gaze unwavering as he entered the battered square. There, standing alone among the ruins, was a single man, worn and exhausted.

He stopped a short distance away, hands clasped behind his back. Javier fixed the man with a steady, serious gaze, his aura suddenly intensifying. A subtle but overwhelming weight pressed down on the square, the kind of presence that made men forget to breathe. A gravity born not just of magic, but of purpose.

” Are you the one my father mentioned? One of the Arjam envoys who came to ask for help?”

The man trembled under Javier’s gaze, but he forced himself upright. With a deep breath, he placed a palm across his chest and bowed, his voice clear but edged with strain.

”Yes, Young Lord... I am the envoy, representative of this town and one of the three that still remain under Arjam’s temporary government.”

”Why did you come to my father so late?” Javier’s voice was cold, cutting through the quiet as he stared the envoy down.

”I... I...” The man faltered, sweat beading at his brow.

Javier’s expression hardened, his aura pressing down until it felt like the very air tripled in weight. The men nearby struggled to breathe under the pressure, instinctively shrinking back.

”You waited until everything was ruined, until your people had suffered, your walls had fallen, before coming to ask for help?” His words rang out, unflinching and severe.

”I... I... don’t have... the power to decide...” The envoy stammered, voice barely above a whisper, unable to meet Javier’s gaze.

”No power to decide?” Javier’s tone was merciless, each syllable heavy with accusation. ”You could have sent a letter, a single word, anything. You could have asked my father for advice, for help on what to do. Instead, you waited. You let your people bleed and starve, and now, only now, you come crawling for help?”

The judgment was plain on his face, his words hanging in the air like a sentence.

Javier’s stare didn’t waver, the weight of his presence leaving no room for excuses.
