I Married the 'Mad' Heir

Ch 61: The Room

The upstairs room at The Gilded Quill was small, cozy, and suddenly felt like a cage.

Orion’s heart was hammering against his ribs, a frantic drumbeat of regret. This was a mistake. A huge mistake. He should have insisted on waiting downstairs. He should have made an excuse. He shouldn’t be here, in a private room with an Alpha who wasn’t his husband, while the entire tavern below likely buzzed with speculation.

He sat rigidly on the very edge of the narrow bed, his hands clenched in his lap. The room held a washbasin, a small table with a candle, and this bed. That was it. The air smelled of old wood, beeswax, and the sharp, sweet scent of spilled wine.

Chase seemed oblivious to the tension. He stood in the middle of the room, wrestling with his soaked shirt. With a frustrated sigh, he grabbed the hem and pulled it up and over his head in one smooth motion.

Orion’s gaze snapped to the wall, then, driven by a curiosity he hated himself for, flicked back.

Chase stood bare-chested, holding the dripping black fabric. His torso was exactly as the wet shirt had hinted—lean but powerfully built, all defined muscle and smooth, pale skin markless of any scars. He muttered something under his breath, a flowing string of words in his native language that sounded like a complaint about sticky wine.

He tossed the shirt towards the washbasin and turned, running a hand through his dark brown, almost black hair, which fell just past his shoulders. His grey-green eyes landed on Orion, who was staring determinedly at a knot in the wooden floorboard.

”What’s wrong?” Chase asked, his voice soft. ”Your cheeks are all red.”

Orion flinched. He could feel the heat in his face, a burning blush that betrayed his discomfort. ”It’s nothing,” he said, his voice tighter than he intended. ”The room is just... warm.”

Chase didn’t buy it. He took a step closer, then another, until he was standing right in front of where Orion sat on the bed. He bent slightly, tilting his head to catch Orion’s downcast eyes. ”Ori,” he said gently. ”Look at me. If something’s wrong, tell me. You’re all tense.”

Orion forced himself to meet those grey-green eyes. They were full of nothing but friendly concern, which somehow made it worse. This was Chase. His friend. But he was also an Alpha, half-dressed, in a bedroom with him.

”I should go,” Orion blurted out, making to stand up.

Chase’s frown deepened. He didn’t move back, so Orion found himself standing awkwardly close to him. ”Why?” Chase asked, genuine confusion in his tone. ”We just got in here. We meet for the first time in years, and you want to leave? Did I do something?”

”No, it’s not you, it’s...” Orion gestured helplessly at the room, at Chase’s state of undress. ”This. It’s not proper.”

Understanding dawned on Chase’s face, followed by a gentle laugh. ”Oh. That.” He shook his head, a fond smile playing on his lips. ”Ori, we’re friends. I’m just changing a shirt. There’s no ’proper’ needed between us.” He placed his hands on Orion’s shoulders, giving them a reassuring squeeze. ”I ordered some food and wine to be sent up. The good stuff, not the spillable kind. We should eat, talk more. You can tell me more about this Abel of yours. I want to understand.”

His touch, meant to be comforting, sent a jolt through Orion. It was too familiar, too much. The scent of black tea, cedarwood, and crushed mint was stronger now, mixed with the clean, warm scent of Chase’s skin. It was a nice scent. A calming scent. Which was its own problem.

Chase’s smile softened. He leaned in a little closer, his nose almost brushing Orion’s hair. He took a slow, deliberate inhale.

”Your scent is so comforting,” Chase murmured, his voice dropping to a low, intimate rumble. ”White tea and bergamot. Clean. Like quiet mornings and old books.” He sighed, a contented sound. ”How about you lie down with me for a while? Just to rest. It’s been an emotional day. We can just... be quiet together.”

The suggestion, so innocently delivered, was the final straw.

”No!” Orion said, the word coming out too loud, too sharp. He tried to take a step back, but the bed was behind his knees. ”No, no, no. Chase, this isn’t... this isn’t happening.” He brought his hands up and planted them firmly on Chase’s bare chest, intending to push him away, to create space.

His palms met warm, firm muscle. Chase didn’t budge. He was solid as a tree.

Orion pushed harder, panic lending him strength. ”Please, move.”

Chase, surprised by the sudden force, did take a slight step back. But Orion had thrown his weight forward. With Chase’s retreat and his own unbalanced push, Orion’s feet tangled. He stumbled forward with a gasp.

Chase’s arms instantly came up to catch him, but the momentum was too much. They fell together in a clumsy heap, sideways onto the mattress.

The world tilted. There was a soft whump as they landed, the bed frame creaking in protest.

Orion found himself on his back, the breath knocked from his lungs. Chase was half on top of him, having twisted at the last second to take most of the impact on his own side, one arm braced beside Orion’s head. His dark brown hair fanned out across the pillow, tickling Orion’s cheek. His face was inches from Orion’s, his grey-green eyes wide with surprise and concern.

”Ori! Are you alright?” Chase asked, his voice full of worry. He made to prop himself up.

That was the exact moment the door exploded inward.

The wooden latch splintered with a deafening CRACK-BANG-BANG.

The door flew open, slamming against the wall with enough force to shake the room.

Three men burst in, moving with the brutal efficiency of soldiers.

Orion had a blurred impression of movement, of grim faces, of sunlight from the hall framing furious silhouettes.

Then a large, calloused hand shot out, grabbed Chase by the shoulder, and wrenched him off the bed.

Chase, caught completely off guard, yelped in shock. He was spun around, his bare back to the newcomer.

Loren’s fist, driven by a fury that had been simmering on the street below, connected with Chase’s jaw with a sickening, meaty THUD.

Chase’s head snapped to the side. He staggered, his legs buckling. True to his word, he clearly had no idea how to fight. He was a poet, a writer. His hands came up in a gesture of confused defense, not retaliation.

He didn’t get a chance for a second thought.

Aster was there. As Chase reeled from the punch, Aster moved in low and fast. He hooked a leg behind Chase’s knees and drove a shoulder into his chest, using the Alpha’s own momentum to slam him down onto the wooden floorboards.

The impact shook the room. Aster followed him down, pinning Chase’s wrists above his head with one strong hand, while his other forearm pressed across Chase’s throat, not enough to choke, but enough to immobilize completely. Aster’s knee dug into his stomach, knocking the wind out of him with a pained gasp.

”Don’t move,” Aster growled, his voice colder than Orion had ever heard it. ”Not a muscle.”

Kaelen swept into the room right behind them, his grey eyes scanning everything in an instant—the scene on the bed, the half-dressed Alpha pinned on the floor, the wine-soaked shirt by the basin. His expression was unreadable, but his body was taut, ready.

And then, in the shattered doorway, filling the space with a presence that sucked all the air from the room, was Abel.

He didn’t rush in. He walked in slowly, his steps heavy on the creaking floor. His golden-brown eyes, usually so bright and curious, were dark, hollow pools. They were fixed on Orion, who was still lying on the disheveled bed, frozen in shock, his robes askew from the fall.

Abel’s gaze traveled from Orion’s flushed face, down to where the collar of his tunic had slipped, then over to where Chase was pinned, bare-chested and struggling weakly under Aster’s relentless hold.

The look on Abel’s face wasn’t anger. It wasn’t the wild, chaotic fury of his episodes. This was something worse. This was a profound, soul-deep devastation. It was the look of a man watching his entire world—the fragile, happy world he’d built with wooden horses and meadow dates—crumble to ashes before his eyes.

He stared at Orion, his husband, caught in a compromising position in a rented room with another man. The evidence was irrefutable. The hug through the window. The joined hands. The private room. The closed curtain. And now this: both of them on the bed, the stranger half-undressed.

Orion saw the understanding dawn in Abel’s eyes, and it felt like a physical blow. ”Abel—” he choked out, scrambling to sit up.

But Abel didn’t seem to hear him. His eyes finally left Orion and moved to the man on the floor. A low, wounded sound vibrated in Abel’s chest. It was the sound of an animal in terrible pain.

Chase, dazed from the punch and the hard landing, blinked up at the massive, blond Alpha looming over him. Recognition, confusion, and dawning horror flashed in his grey-green eyes. ”Abel...?” he slurred through his already swelling jaw, the name spoken with the familiarity of someone who had just spent an hour hearing all about him.

Hearing his name on this stranger’s lips was the final twist of the knife.

Abel’s hands, hanging at his sides, clenched into white-knuckled fists. The muscles in his jaw worked. For a terrifying second, Orion thought he would lunge at Chase, would tear him apart with his bare hands.

But he didn’t.

He just stood there, a monument of shattered silence, looking from his pinned, half-naked rival to his disheveled husband on the bed, as the truth settled into his broken heart with an unbearable, final weight.

The room was deathly quiet, save for Chase’s ragged, restrained breathing and the faint murmur of the oblivious tavern below. The promised food and wine would never arrive. The happy reunion was over.

On the floor, Chase lay subdued, a poet defeated not by verse, but by the brutal, unpoetic reality of a heartbroken husband’s guard. And on the bed, Orion sat paralyzed, knowing that no explanation, however true, could ever bridge the chasm of betrayal that now yawned in his husband’s eyes.
