I Married the 'Mad' Heir

Ch 51: The Play Date

Two days later, Abel woke up quiet.

Not the peaceful quiet of their evening by the fire. This was a tense, focused quiet. He got out of bed with stiff movements and went straight to the corner where he kept his wooden soldiers and horses.

Orion watched from the bed as Abel knelt on the rug. With great care, Abel arranged the pieces. He lined up the cavalry. He placed the foot soldiers in neat rows. He positioned the grumpy-faced commander just so. He wiped a speck of dust from the flank of his favorite horse with the chipped ear.

This wasn’t play. This was preparation for a mission.

Orion got up and dressed himself in simple, comfortable clothes—soft trousers and a tunic. Then he went to the wardrobe to choose something for Abel.

Abel usually didn’t care much what he wore, but today Orion knew it mattered. He bypassed the fine silks and embroidered jackets. He chose sturdy, dark trousers and a plain linen shirt in a deep green that matched Abel’s eyes. Nothing too formal, nothing that would feel restrictive or like a costume.

”Come here,” Orion said softly.

Abel stood up and came over obediently. He held his arms out while Orion helped him into the shirt. He stood still as Orion fastened the buttons, his gaze distant, rehearsing something in his head.

”You don’t have to do this if you’re nervous,” Orion said, smoothing the shirt over Abel’s broad shoulders.

”I want to,” Abel said, his voice firm but low. ”I growled at my friend. I have to say sorry. Properly.”

”This is your way,” Orion said, nodding. It made perfect sense. Abel’s apologies weren’t flowery words. They were actions. Invitations. Shared activities.

Orion found a simple leather belt and threaded it through Abel’s trouser loops. He knelt to help him into his boots, lacing them snug. When he stood up, he brushed a stray bit of lint from Abel’s shoulder. ”There. You look very handsome. And ready.”

Abel took a deep breath. He looked at his reflection in the polished metal mirror. He didn’t see an heir or a patient. He saw a man preparing to face his friend. He gave a single, sharp nod.

Today was a big day.

After breakfast—which Abel only picked at—they walked downstairs. Abel carried his favorite wooden horse clutched tightly in one hand. His other hand found Orion’s and held on, his grip firm and slightly damp.

They didn’t go to the main gardens or the grand terrace. Abel led them to a smaller, walled courtyard near the old armory. It was paved with flagstones, sunny, and private. A good place for a play date.

Aster was already there.

He wasn’t alone. Loren, Kaelen, Jax, and Corin stood behind him in a loose half-circle. They looked... different. Out of their training leathers and guard uniforms, they wore plain tunics and trousers. They looked like men trying very hard not to look like soldiers.

And they were all holding toys.

Aster had a small wooden castle under one arm, freshly painted by the looks of it. Loren clutched a handful of colorful peg dolls with comically fierce expressions carved on their faces. Jax carried a cloth bag that bulged with what were clearly more wooden figures. Corin had two small, carved dragons. Even Kaelen held something—a simple board marked out with squares for a basic strategy game.

On a stone bench beside them sat a large basket. The smell of fresh ginger biscuits wafted from it.

They looked awkward. Deeply, profoundly awkward. Like men who had been ordered to a diplomatic summit wearing clown shoes.

Abel stopped at the entrance to the courtyard. He saw the toys. He saw the cookies. He saw Aster’s calm, waiting face. His own nervous stiffness seemed to intensify for a moment.

Orion squeezed his hand. ”Go on.”

Abel let go of Orion’s hand. He took two steps forward on his own. He held out his wooden horse, like an offering.

”Captain Aster,” he said, the title formal and clear. ”I am sorry for growling. I would like to... to play strategy games with you. If you still want to.”

The courtyard was silent except for the chirping of sparrows in the ivy.

Aster looked at the horse. He looked at Abel’s earnest, anxious face. Then he slowly set the wooden castle down on the flagstones. He walked forward until he was an arm’s length from Abel.

”Thank you for the apology, Captain,” Aster said, his voice warm and steady. ”And I would be honored to play strategy games with you.”

The tension in Abel’s shoulders dropped visibly. A tiny, hopeful smile touched his lips.

Then Aster did something unexpected. He reached into his own pocket and pulled out a small, carved wooden knight. It was worn smooth with age, the paint faded. He held it out to Abel. ”I brought my best commander. He’s seen a few battles. Thought he could lead your cavalry.”

Abel stared at the little knight. He carefully took it, turning it over in his big fingers. He looked from the knight to Aster’s face. The last of the ice melted away. ”He’s a good one,” Abel said, with absolute certainty.

That broke the spell.

Loren let out a whoop and tossed his peg dolls into the air. ”Right! Enough standing around like statues! Where are we setting up?”

Jax beamed, hefting his bag. ”I brought reinforcements!”

Corin bounced on his toes. ”The dragons can be on our side, right? They breathe fire!”

Kaelen just shook his head, a faint smile on his lips, and placed the game board on the ground.

The courtyard transformed. The flagstones became a vast battlefield. Abel and Aster knelt opposite each other, the castle between them. Abel arranged his soldiers with quick, precise movements, his earlier nerves gone, replaced by a familiar focus. Aster watched, then placed his own pieces, adapting to Abel’s formations.

Loren, Jax, and Corin became the enthusiastic, chaotic infantry, deploying their peg dolls and dragons with loud commentary and dramatic sound effects. Kaelen sat off to the side, ostensibly observing, but occasionally making a quiet, devastatingly smart suggestion about troop placement that both Abel and Aster would consider seriously before adjusting their lines.

Orion sat on the stone bench beside the basket of cookies, watching. It was the most surreal and beautiful thing he’d ever seen.

These hardened warriors, men who had fought real battles, were now completely engrossed in a game of wooden armies. They argued over whether a peg doll could realistically scale the castle walls. They debated the tactical merit of dragon support. Jax’s giant fingers moved his little soldiers with surprising delicacy.

And Abel... Abel was in his element. He wasn’t the confused man from the manor. He wasn’t the furious Alpha from the clearing. He was a strategist. He pointed. He redirected. He saw patterns instantly.

”No, put the archers there. On the high ground. They’ll pick off the cavalry before they charge.”

”Flank him on the left. He’s weak on the left.”

”The river is a trap. Don’t cross there.”

Aster listened, nodded, countered. Their game was a silent, intense dialogue of moves and counter-moves. It was a dance they both remembered.

At one point, Abel looked up from the board, directly at Aster. ”You always did forget to guard your supply line,” he said, not as an accusation, but as a simple statement of fact.

Aster’s mouth quirked. ”And you always charged yours headfirst into obvious ambushes. Some things never change, Captain.”

Abel grinned. A real, full grin that lit up his whole face. It was the first time Orion had seen that particular smile directed at someone other than him. It was the smile of a man with his friend.

They played for over an hour. The sun climbed higher, warming the stones. The basket of cookies was passed around and steadily emptied. Orion accepted a ginger biscuit from Jax and nibbled on it, content to be a spectator.

Finally, Abel made a move that involved sacrificing his favorite horse unit to draw Aster’s commander out of position. Loren groaned in dismay as Abel’s prized cavalry was ”wiped out,” but Aster just stared at the board, then slowly tipped his own commander figure onto its side.

”Checkmate,” Abel said quietly.

Aster sat back on his heels. He looked at the defeated arrangement of wood on the flagstones, then up at Abel. There was no pity in his eyes. Only respect. ”Well played, sir.”

Abel’s chest swelled with pride. Not the arrogant pride of a noble, but the quiet satisfaction of a craftsman who has done his work well.

The game broke up after that. The soldiers started gathering their toys, their movements slower now, relaxed. The awkwardness was gone, replaced by an easy camaraderie.

Abel stood up, brushing off his knees. He walked over to Orion, his steps light. He sat down beside him on the bench and leaned against him, letting out a long, happy sigh. ”We won,” he whispered.

”You did,” Orion agreed, smiling.

Aster came over, dusting his hands on his trousers. ”Thank you for the invitation, Captain. It was a good game.”

Abel looked up at him. ”Tomorrow?” he asked, hope bright in his eyes.

Aster’s calm face softened. ”Tomorrow sounds good. Maybe we can try a siege scenario.”

Abel nodded eagerly.

Loren bounded over. ”Can we come too? My peg doll general wants a rematch! He says the dragon fire was cheating!”

”No one said dragons were against the rules!” Corin protested.

As they bickered good-naturedly, Kaelen approached Orion. He stood nearby, not looking directly at him, his gaze on the dispersing men. ”He’s still in there,” Kaelen said quietly, almost to himself. ”The mind that planned the relief of the Southern Pass. It’s just... the map is folded wrong sometimes.”

Orion looked at Kaelen, then back at Abel, who was now explaining to Jax exactly how the flanking maneuver had worked. ”I know,” he said.

Kaelen gave a curt nod and walked away, joining the others as they headed back toward the barracks, their laughter echoing in the courtyard.

Soon, it was just Orion and Abel again, surrounded by the scattered remnants of their play war. The sun was warm, the cookies were eaten, and the apology had been accepted.

Abel rested his head on Orion’s shoulder. ”My friend forgave me,” he murmured.

”He never needed to forgive you,” Orion said, stroking his hair. ”He just needed to understand. And now he does.”

”My heart feels big again. But the good big. Not the hurt big.”

”That’s the best kind of big.”

They sat for a while longer in the sunny courtyard, surrounded by wooden armies at peace, the sound of distant laughter still hanging in the air like the scent of ginger biscuits.
