I Married the 'Mad' Heir

Ch 58: Chase

The Alpha with the broken nose snarled. The calm dismissal, the casual grip on his wrist—it was an insult. His pride, already cheap and brittle, snapped.

”Who do you think you are?” he spat.

He didn’t try to pull his wrist free. Instead, with his other hand, he swung a wild, heavy punch straight at the cloaked man’s hooded face.

Orion gasped, a sound lost in the street noise.

The tall man didn’t flinch. He moved his head just a fraction to the side. The fist whistled past his ear, scraping roughly against the coarse wool of the hood.

The force of the missed punch, combined with the sudden movement, tugged the cloak loose. It slid back from the man’s head and shoulders, pooling for a moment around his elbows before slipping entirely to the cobblestones.

Long hair spilled out.

It was dark brown, almost black, straight and slightly tousled, falling just past his shoulders. It caught the afternoon sun with subtle chestnut highlights.

The man straightened, pushing the hair back over his shoulders with a gloved hand. The motion was effortless, almost annoyed.

Now they could all see his face.

He was fair-skinned, with a strong jaw, a straight nose, and a face that was handsome without looking unnaturally perfect. His lips were naturally rosy, parted slightly now in mild irritation. And his eyes... they were a clear, muted shade of grey-green, framed by dark lashes.

A single small silver hoop hung from his left ear, the only piece of jewelry he wore.

Around his neck, visible above the open collar of his simple black travelling shirt, lay a narrow leather cord with a small, worn metal pendant. It rested against his skin, subtle and unremarkable.

For a second, everything stopped.

The two rough Alphas froze mid-snarl, their aggression evaporating. Their eyes widened. Their mouths hung open. They stared, their breath caught in their throats.

One of them whispered, a ragged sound full of shock and sudden fear. ”He looks like...”

He didn’t finish the sentence.

The tall man turned his head slowly, those grey-green eyes fixing on them. The gentle, unassuming air was gone. In its place was a quiet, absolute authority. He didn’t growl. He didn’t puff out his chest. He just looked at them, and the street seemed to grow colder.

”Leave,” he said again, his voice still soft, but it was no longer a suggestion.

The Alphas didn’t need to be told twice. They stumbled back a step, then another. They turned and practically ran, shoving past a startled fruit seller, disappearing around the corner without a backward glance.

Silence returned to the space in front of the tavern. A few passersby gave them curious looks but hurried on.

The tall man stood still for a moment, watching them go. Then he sighed, a soft exhalation that seemed to release the tension from his shoulders. He bent down, picked up his fallen cloak, and shook it out gently. He patted the dust from the wool with careful, gloved hands, as if tending to a valued possession.

Finally, he turned and looked down at Orion.

His expression had softened completely. The cold authority was gone, replaced by gentle concern. His grey-green eyes were warm now, crinkling at the corners.

”I hope you are alright?” he asked. His accent was more noticeable up close—a gentle, lilting cadence, rounding the edges of the words.

Orion realized he hadn’t moved or breathed properly since the cloak fell. He nodded, his throat dry. ”Y-yes. I’m fine.”

His eyes couldn’t leave the man’s face. It was him. It had to be. The scent of black tea and cedarwood was stronger now, mixed with the faint, crisp smell of crushed mint. It was the scent from the letters, given physical form.

”Thank you,” Orion managed, finding his voice. It sounded small.

The stranger shook his head, a gentle smile touching his lips. ”Don’t mention it. It was nothing.”

”No,” Orion said, firmer now. The shock was fading, leaving behind a jumble of recognition and awe. ”You helped me. Let me thank you properly.” On impulse, he dipped his head slightly in a bow, placing his own ungloved hand over his heart. It was a formal gesture of gratitude, one he’d read about in books from the Central Empire.

The man’s smile widened, a flash of genuine surprise and pleasure. He recognized the gesture.

”Well...” he said, rubbing the back of his neck with a gloved hand in a suddenly boyish, awkward motion. The powerful, intimidating figure from a moment ago was gone, replaced by someone who looked almost shy. ”In that case...”

He straightened up, composing himself. ”Perhaps you could assist me with something else. I seem to be a bit lost.” He gestured vaguely at the busy street. ”I am looking for a friend of mine. We are supposed to meet here.” He glanced at the sign of The Gilded Quill. ”But I have a... slight problem.”

”What problem?” Orion asked, his heart beginning to beat a wild, hopeful rhythm.

”I don’t know what he looks like,” the man admitted, his smile turning wry. ”We have only ever exchanged letters.”

The world seemed to tilt. Orion’s breath caught. It was him.

He blinked, trying to process it. The poet from the Central Empire was standing right in front of him. He had saved him from a street brawl. He had dark hair, grey-green eyes, and an expression that shifted between quiet confidence and boyish awkwardness.

”It might be stupid,” Orion heard himself say, his voice barely a whisper. Then, reciting from memory, he spoke two lines from a sonnet the man had sent him two years ago. A poem about loneliness and distant stars.

”The ink is dry, the page is bare,

Yet your voice is a lantern in the air.”

The tall man’s reaction was immediate.

His grey-green eyes flew wide. The easy smile vanished, replaced by a look of stunned, disbelieving joy. He took a half-step forward.

Then his arms came up and wrapped around Orion, pulling him into a firm, warm embrace.

”Ori,” he breathed into Orion’s hair, the nickname a soft, familiar caress. He held him tightly for a moment, then, laughing with pure delight, he lifted Orion off his feet and spun him once, gently, right there on the cobblestones.

Orion gasped, clutching at the man’s shoulders for balance. He was being spun by a stranger—an Alpha—in the middle of the street. It should have been terrifying, scandalous. But it wasn’t. It felt like... coming home.

When his feet touched ground again, the man released him, stepping back but keeping his hands on Orion’s shoulders. His face was alight with happiness.

Then, remembering himself, he pulled his hands back. He placed one gloved hand flat over his own heart and gave a deeper, more formal bow than Orion’s earlier one.

”Then let me introduce myself properly,” he said, his voice rich with warmth and that gentle accent. When he straightened, his eyes met Orion’s, sparkling. ”My name is Chase.”

Chase.

Orion had never known his name. The letters were always signed simply, ’Your friend from afar.’ Chase. It suited him. Simple, warm, and quietly memorable.

”Orion,” Orion said, finding his own smile. It felt strange on his face, wide and unguarded. ”I’m Orion.”

”I know,” Chase said, his grin turning mischievous. ”I have been reading your name for four years. It is very good to finally see the face that goes with it.” His gaze swept over Orion, taking in his fine clothes, his nervous posture. ”You look... exactly as your words sounded.”

Orion felt a blush creep up his neck. ”And you... you don’t look like a dusty scholar.”

Chase laughed, a clear, bright sound that made a few people turn and smile. ”The dust is on the inside, I assure you. Would you like to go inside? I believe we were meant to have tea.”

He bent and picked up his cloak again, shaking it out once more before draping it loosely over one arm instead of putting it back on. Without the hood, he seemed both more approachable and more strikingly ordinary in the best possible way. His dark hair fell freely around his shoulders, and the little silver hoop in his ear caught the light when he moved.

Orion nodded, still feeling a little dizzy. ”Yes. Tea would be... perfect.”

Chase offered his arm, not in a dominant Alpha gesture, but in an old-fashioned, courtly way. Orion hesitated for only a second before slipping his hand into the crook of Chase’s elbow. The wool of the cloak was rough under his fingers.

Together, they walked the last few steps to the door of The Gilded Quill. Chase pushed it open, holding it for Orion.

The tavern interior was warm, smoky, and quiet compared to the street. It smelled of roasting meat, ale, and old wood. A fire crackled in a large hearth. Men—mostly scholars, merchants, and travelers—sat at tables, talking in low voices or reading.

Chase led them to a small table in a corner near the window, a spot that offered both light and privacy. He pulled out a chair for Orion before taking his own seat, draping his cloak over the back.

A serving maid came over. Chase ordered tea for two, and a plate of whatever pastries the kitchen had fresh.

When she left, they were alone at the table.

For a moment, they just looked at each other. The reality of it settled over them. Four years of ink and paper, of thoughts sent across continents, had led to this: two men sitting in a noisy tavern, unsure where to begin.

Chase broke the silence first. He reached up and self-consciously tucked a strand of his dark hair behind one ear. ”I must apologize for my dramatic entrance. I did not plan to rescue you from ruffians. I was merely arriving early.”

”It was a very effective introduction,” Orion said, his nerves easing into a shy amusement.

Chase’s smile returned, softer now. ”I am glad you are unharmed. When I saw them grab you...” He shook his head, the smile fading. ”I acted before I thought.”

”Thank you,” Orion said again, meaning it more deeply this time. ”Not just for that. For... everything. The letters. Your words. They meant a great deal to me. More than I could ever say in a letter back.”

Chase’s eyes held his, the grey-green seeming to see right through him. ”And yours to me, Orion. They were a lifeline in a very lonely world.” He leaned forward slightly, his voice dropping. ”You have no idea how long I have wanted to meet you. To see if the person who wrote such perceptive, gentle things was real.”

Orion looked down at his hands, folded on the table. He was real. He was here. With Chase. It was overwhelming.

The tea arrived, steaming and fragrant in a plain ceramic pot. The pastries were little honey cakes, still warm. The normalcy of the act—pouring tea, passing a cup—helped ground them.

As Chase handed Orion his cup, their fingers brushed briefly. Chase’s gloves were soft leather, worn thin at the fingertips.

”So,” Chase said, settling back with his own cup. ”Tell me of your journey here. Was the city very frightening?”

Orion took a sip of tea, letting the warmth spread through him. He looked at the man across from him—his pen pal, his secret friend, the mysterious Chase. He smiled.

”It was,” he admitted. ”But it’s getting much better.”
