Chapter 187: Chapter 114: Gathering of the Big Shots, Ruirui Goes Missing_4

Chen Jie and Zhou Chu together paid their respects to Peng Shizhong with tea. Peng Shizhong took a sip of the tea, and then patted each of them twice on their backs, signifying an elder’s blessing for peace and good health.

Having completed this ceremony, Peng Shizhong then turned to the Smart Brain of the Fishing Guild, Tang Ziyue, and said, ”Please trouble Mr. Tang to take up the brush.”

Tang Ziyue nodded, familiar with the process, and approached the scroll at hand.

This scroll was the family genealogy of the Peng Family, recording the lineage of the Pengs, and the adoptive sons were to be added to it as well, for they were eligible to inherit Peng Shizhong’s legacy.

Soon after, Tang Ziyue had filled in the names of Chen Jiusi and Zhou Chu at the end.

With this, the ceremony was considered complete.

At this moment, the two formally became Peng Shizhong’s adoptive sons, acknowledged by everyone.

With this testimony, if the Black Market dared to continue posting a bounty for Chen Jie, it would be a flagrant declaration of war against Peng Shizhong.

It was a symbolic representation of status.

As the voice announcing the completion of the ceremony rang out,

the sound of firecrackers went off outside, followed by the beginning of the banquet.

Naturally seated at the main table were the likes of Nan Batian and Beilao Liu, the Thirteen Grand Protectors.

Chen Jie and Zhou Chu were seated at the table for Peng Shizhong’s adoptive sons, which was very close to the main table.

At this time, while Chen Jie and the others appeared to be dining, they were in fact attentively listening to the conversation at the main table.

Then they heard Liu Laoguai say, ”Ba Tian, what do you plan to do about that salt field dispute at Nan Lake?”

Nan Batian replied, ”What do you plan to do, Brother Liu?”

Liu Laoguai responded, ”We each already have a thirty percent stake in the privatized salt of Mianshui County, and the remaining forty percent belongs to those above us. However, if those guilds were to seize that salt field at Nan Lake, it could reduce our profits by at least ten percent. We can’t let such a huge profit slip away.”

Nan Batian asked, ”What do you suggest then?”

Nan Lake should belong to us all. Shall we combine forces and split the gains?”

Hearing this, Nan Batian said, ”Heh, but that old beggar might not agree to it.”

Liu Laoguai looked at Nan Batian and said, ”What could that beggar do against our alliance?”

Nan Batian replied, ”Elder Liu, although we’ve got the upper hand in Mianshui County, don’t underestimate that old beggar. He’s got the Beggar Sect behind him!”

Upon hearing ”Beggar Sect,” Liu Laoguai’s expression shifted slightly, ”But we shouldn’t fear them; we have the court backing us.”

Nan Batian said, ”This matter requires careful consideration.”

Liu Laoguai also frowned.

Upon hearing this, Chen Jie turned to Feng Xuan and asked, ”What’s the situation with Nan Lake?”

To which Fourth Brother Deng Guangming replied, ”Oh, Nan Lake used to be a dead lake, but later someone discovered its water could be used to produce salt, and the yield was enormous. It was first seized by that gang of old beggars. However, this private salt trade is the plump prey of both us and Guild Cao, and other people can’t get involved!”

Chen Jie, upon hearing this, asked, ”Is that old beggar one of the Thirteen Grand Protectors?”

Deng Guangming replied, ”If not him, then who? The old fellow still has strength, even surpassing our adoptive father to some extent, nearly reaching the level of the two Guild Leaders.”

”What’s more formidable is that man’s identity as a sixth-generation disciple of the Beggar Sect; to provoke him would mean incurring the wrath of the Beggar Sect, an extremely troublesome affair.”

”Beggar Sect!”

Chen Jie murmured this, and then Feng Xuan added, ”The Beggar Sect is indeed mighty. Although they no longer possess the overall strength they had during the Song Dynasty, claiming to be the largest guild in the land, their internal affairs have fragmented over the years. But a skinny camel is still bigger than a horse; they are not to be trifariously trifled with.”

Chen Jie asked, ”The Beggar Sect of the Song Dynasty?”

Feng Xuan affirmed, ”Yes, the Beggar Sect from the Song Dynasty produced three heroes: Guild Leader Qiao of the Qidan Clan, Guild Leader Hong, and the mother of the founding master of the Emei Sect, Guild Leader Huang.”

”All of them were well-known figures. But now, the Beggar Sect has fragmented, their supreme martial arts have nearly dissipated, and they are in decline.”

”Yet even in decline, they’re much stronger than our smaller guilds.”

Hearing this, Chen Jie felt a sense of awe. The world was indeed vast, and he was still very weak.

Chen Jie then inquired, ”So, what should we do about Nan Lake?”

Feng Xuan said, ”That’s a concern for the big players, what does it have to do with us? Besides, Sixth Brother, we don’t need to worry so much. The Beggar Sect isn’t as powerful as we imagine, and with the support of the court, they won’t dare do much to us.”

”If they dare send their experts, we’ll have our own experts for support. Therefore, this Nan Lake issue will likely just end up being a tug-of-war.”

Chen Jie replied, ”I see.”

Meanwhile, at another table, they heard Nan Batian say, ”I see it this way: let the Hall Masters make the first move and get a sense of the old beggar’s intentions.”

Hearing this, Liu Laoguai said, ”Send the Hall Masters? That could work. If that’s the case, I will entrust Qing Feng with this.”

”Dad, I’d like to go too.”

Liu Song spoke up, causing Liu Laoguai to frown. Nan Batian laughed and said, ”Ah, good, Nephew Liu is indeed a young hero.”

Continuing, Nan Batian said, ”Brother, since Guild Leader Liu is sending Master Gu Qingfeng to handle this, I’ll leave our Fishing Guild’s interests to you. You’ve dealt with Master Gu many times, so you’ll work well together.”

Hearing this, Peng Shizhong slightly furrowed his brow. The Beggar Sect was no easy adversary.

But with the Gang Leader having made his decision, Peng Shizhong could not refuse and said, ”Yes, I will do my best!”

Nan Batian smiled and said, ”Good, very good. Let’s settle it then. With Brother taking the lead, success is certain. Master Gu is a pillar of Guild Cao; with you two cooperating, Nan Lake will surely be ours.”
