Reborn in the 1970s — Married a Proud Rough Man

Chapter 145: Chapter 62: I Married You to Give You a Good Life (Part 2)

”Your fourth brother poked her?” Second Aunt was shocked. ”Jing Si is a very cautious and reliable person. How could he have poked your fourth sister-in-law’s eye? Sigh! That couple is so much trouble. If I hadn’t run into them yesterday... Heh! Jing Qi, do you need to use the restroom?”

Jing Qi was a young girl, so some things weren’t appropriate to say in front of her.

Jie Jingshan shook her head. She could use the toilet by herself, but she needed someone to empty it afterward.

At the hospital, in the bicycle parking area, a bike was tossed aside, unlocked. Jie Jingchen took Qin Mei straight to find Mrs. Xie.

Mrs. Xie had just come out of an operating room, her surgical mask still on.

”Mom,” Jie Jingchen called out.

Mrs. Xie turned. Seeing her tense fourth son supporting Qin Mei as they approached, she was slightly surprised. Jing Si was always calm and unfazed by anything; it was rare to see even a hint of panic on his face.

When she noticed Qin Mei’s hair was a bit of a mess, and especially that she was covering her left eye, Mrs. Xie’s expression changed. She hurried toward them, asking with concern and worry, ”What happened?”

”She hurt her eye,” Jie Jingchen said, his deep voice filled with worry.

Her suspicion confirmed, Mrs. Xie panicked for a moment. ”Quick, come with me.”

Mrs. Xie took Qin Mei to see an ophthalmologist. After an examination, the doctor reached a conclusion.

”Director Qiao, don’t worry. The cornea isn’t injured. I’ll prescribe some eye drops, and she’ll be fine after using them at home for a few days.”

Mrs. Xie breathed a sigh of relief, and the weight on Jie Jingchen’s chest lifted. In contrast to their worry, Qin Mei was much calmer.

”Thank you, Director Kang,” Mrs. Xie said.

”Her eye was poked, but your daughter-in-law didn’t rub it, and you brought her in right away. Director Qiao, your son and daughter-in-law did a good job,” Director Kang said.

Qin Mei’s lips twitched. ’If you can’t find something to praise, you don’t have to force it.’

Mrs. Xie smiled, thanked Director Kang again, and then led them out of the examination room.

”Xiao Mei, does it hurt a lot?” A flash of sympathy crossed Mrs. Xie’s eyes as she looked at Qin Mei. She had seen it during Director Kang’s examination—Qin Mei’s eye was very red and a little swollen. The eyes are so sensitive; it must be incredibly painful.

”A little,” Qin Mei said, still covering her left eye. She couldn’t open it; it hurt whenever she tried.

”I’ll take you to get the prescription. You should feel better after putting in the drops,” Mrs. Xie said, glancing at the silent Jing Si. His panic and worry had been replaced by guilt.

’Guilt? What for?’

’Xiao Mei hurt her eye. What does that have to do with him?’

Mrs. Xie didn’t press for details right away. She took them to the pharmacy, and as soon as they had the medicine, she immediately put two drops in Qin Mei’s eye. Then she handed the bottle to Jie Jingchen, who was standing beside them. ”When you get home, you give her the next dose.”

Jie Jingchen took it and put it in his jacket pocket.

”Xiao Mei, what happened? How did you hurt your eye?” Mrs. Xie asked.

Qin Mei didn’t answer. ’How am I supposed to answer that? She’s my mother-in-law, not my own mother. If I blame her son in front of her, she’ll resent me.’

’To keep the peace between a mother- and daughter-in-law, the wife can’t badmouth the son to his mother. Even if her son is in the wrong, the scales in her heart will always tip in his favor.’

”I did it,” Jie Jingchen said, bravely admitting his mistake.

”What?” Mrs. Xie was shocked and surprised. She had assumed Qin Mei had been careless and hurt her own eye; it never occurred to her that the culprit was her own son. Angrily, she thumped Jie Jingchen on the shoulder. ”Honestly! She’s your wife, what are you doing poking her in the eye?”

Qin Mei felt there was something off about Mrs. Xie’s words. ’You can’t poke your own wife’s eye, but you can poke someone else’s? Is that what my mother-in-law means? Probably not. A doctor’s heart is like a parent’s.’

”Mom, he didn’t do it on purpose,” Qin Mei spoke up in Jie Jingchen’s defense.

Mrs. Xie was taken aback for a moment. Her eye was injured, yet she was still defending Jing Si. The more Mrs. Xie looked at her daughter-in-law, the more satisfied and fond of her she became.

Still, Mrs. Xie kept a stern face and admonished him. ”Xiao Mei, don’t speak up for him. Eyes are important and not something to joke about. Whether it was on purpose or not, you can’t joke around with someone’s eyes.”

”Mom, we’ll take your words to heart,” Qin Mei said, covering her left eye. A smile bloomed on her face, though it looked a bit comical.

In front of Mrs. Xie, Qin Mei knew how to act. She had a perfect grasp of what should and shouldn’t be said.

Her children were her line in the sand; anyone who crossed it would be destroyed. Xu Chunwang was a living example. He had merely launched a personal attack against Jie Jingchen, and Mrs. Xie had ruined him for it, cutting off the Xu family’s future generations.

When Mrs. Xie decided to be ruthless, she was truly ruthless, showing not a shred of mercy.

Afterward, only Xu Anshan had come to their door, seeking to answer violence with violence, an eye for an eye. But he was outmaneuvered by Jie Jingchen and sent to the police station. Since then, the Xu family had never come back for revenge or to cause trouble. Qin Mei was no fool; she understood the high stakes involved.
