Apocalypse: Every Woman I Invest In Makes Me Stronger

The tremors grew stronger.

Inside the Survival Space, Ethan watched the light screen and felt his face go tight. The lobby image flickered every time the building shook, so he was seeing the outside in pieces. Dust fell from the ruined hall’s ceiling. Marble broke off the floor. Cracks ran the walls like dark veins.

Then the ground began to rise.

At first it was easy to miss. A section of the lobby bulged, lifting the shattered tiles around it. Within seconds the whole surface swelled, as if something enormous was forcing its way up through the earth.

”What the hell is happening down there?” Daisy whispered.

Nobody answered.

Even the Hornscale Beast, which had been watching Ethan with that almost-human smile, turned its attention to the floor.

A roar came up from under the Museum. Deep enough that Ethan felt it in his chest through the Space. The screen jumped. Several of the women covered their ears without thinking.

Nina burst into tears. Debbie pulled her daughter in and covered the small ears with both hands. Aria hurried over and crouched beside them.

”It’s okay, sweetheart. Stay close to your mother.”

Her voice gave her away. She had seen the Hornscale Beast tear the Museum’s defenses, and she had watched the Tiger King and the Winged Zombie do their damage. The thing under them had just made the Hornscale Beast hesitate. Whatever was coming was not ordinary.

Ethan leaned closer. The image shook again. Then the lobby floor exploded.

Marble shot through the air. An enormous claw punched up through the ground, dark golden scales on thick fingers, each tipped with a curved black talon big enough to open a car. The claw gripped the broken edge. A second claw came. Then a third. The earth collapsed around them and opened a cavity under the Museum. Soil poured into the dark while the creature hauled itself up, forcing its weight through the hole.

For several seconds the screen was only dust, broken stone, and flashes of dark gold. Then the dust began to settle. Ethan’s eyes widened.

A massive head came out of the hole, then a thick neck, then a body covered in overlapping scales. It dragged itself onto the ruined floor, claws grinding the marble. Enormous hind legs planted on either side of the collapsed opening. A long tail swept the debris behind it. The lobby seemed to shrink around it.

A Tyrannosaurus Rex. Calling it an ordinary one would have been an insult to the word. More than fifteen meters from snout to tail tip, nearly three times the largest skeleton the Museum had on display. Thick dark golden scales instead of skin, armor plates overlapping the neck, shoulders, and back, the kind of hide that looked like it would laugh at a blade. The head was the size of a small car. When the jaws parted, rows of dagger teeth showed, stained dark with old blood, each one large enough to take a torso.

The eyes were the worst. Not eyes at all. Two ghostly blue flames burned in the sockets and threw a cold light over the face. No pupils. No fear. No confusion. Only a predatory intelligence that did not belong in a fossil.

A chill walked Ethan’s spine. He had seen plenty of bad things since the world ended. This looked like a predator from a forgotten age had stood up in a world that was no longer its.

Beside him, Aria stared. ”A Tyrannosaurus Rex...” Her voice went quieter. ”It actually came back.”

Elena swallowed. ”And judging by those scales, it didn’t come back the same.”

”No.” Ethan kept his eyes on it. ”It came back stronger.”

The rex raised its head, slow. The blue flames settled on the Hornscale Beast. For the first time since Ethan had met it, the Hornscale Beast looked genuinely unsettled. Its body stiffened. The curved horns lowered a fraction. Claws dug into the broken marble. Then it took half a step back.

Small. Ethan saw it anyway. The Hornscale Beast was afraid. That told him more than any system line could have. The thing had spatial power, had eaten attacks that would have ended most mutants, and had forced the Tiger King to give ground in the mess outside. The rex had barely cleared the hole, and the other creature was already reconsidering where it stood.

Fear was not the only thing driving it. Pride was a bad partner for power. The Hornscale Beast threw its head back and roared. Black energy gathered in the open jaws. The air distorted as the energy compressed into a dense wave, dark enough to swallow the weak light through the broken dome. Then it fired.

The black wave crossed the lobby in an instant and slammed the rex’s head.

Boom.

Dust billowed. Marble fragments skittered. What glass was left in the nearby cases shattered. For a moment the rex’s head vanished behind the blast. The Hornscale Beast held its ground and watched for the result.

When the dust cleared, the newcomer had not moved. A few golden sparks flickered across the scales. That was all. Not a scratch. Not a scale out of place.

The rex turned its face toward the Hornscale Beast. The blue flames seemed to burn brighter. The silence that followed was worse than the roar.

Then it attacked.

It lunged with a speed that did not belong on something that size, jaws opening wide enough to take a person whole. Shattered tiles flew under its feet. The Hornscale Beast twisted at the last possible moment. The teeth snapped shut where its body had been a fraction earlier, a sound like a steel trap on empty air. The Hornscale Beast answered at once. Its tail whipped around, cutting at the rex’s eyes, fast enough to whistle, heavy enough to crush concrete.

The rex had already read it. Foreclaws shot forward and seized the tail. For one brief moment the two monsters strained. Then the rex pulled.

Crack.

Breaking bone rang through the lobby. The Hornscale Beast shrieked, sharp enough that Nina started crying again. Its body lurched as the rex dragged it off balance. Spatial fluctuations surged around it and did nothing useful. It could not get free. Before it could recover, the rex drove its massive head into the Hornscale Beast’s side.

The impact was ugly. The Hornscale Beast flew backward, smashed through a row of display cases, and hit a load-bearing wall. Concrete burst around it. The wall buckled. Then it collapsed.

Ethan’s chest went tight. That much physical strength. The rex had not used an obvious special ability. No space work. No complicated energy. It had grabbed its opponent and beaten it into the wall. The raw difference was horrifying.

”Is it going to kill the Hornscale Beast?” Sofia whispered.

”At this rate, yes,” Ethan said.

He could not look away. The rex stepped forward, claws crushing debris. The Hornscale Beast struggled to rise. Its injured tail dragged useless behind it. Black blood on the broken marble. The spatial energy around its body flickered, weaker with every second. It was losing. It was losing badly.

The next collision shook the whole Museum, and Ethan already knew the building was not going to survive the answer.
