Apocalypse: Every Woman I Invest In Makes Me Stronger

The pale wash of dawn came in through the reinforced window in thin, uneven strips, cutting across the floor and stopping just short of Ethan’s face. Dust hung in the light. Somewhere outside, something scraped once against the building and went quiet.

He opened his eyes slowly.

The first thing he saw was a pair of legs.

Long. The kind of length that made the room feel smaller. She sat on the windowsill with one knee drawn up and the other hanging, jeans worn soft at the knees and rolled once at the ankle. Mud had dried on the cuffs. The sneakers were scuffed to hell. None of it mattered. The denim pulled tight over the line of her thigh and the curve of her calf, and Ethan stared a second longer than he meant to.

Christ. Those legs could outrun a bad decision and still have time left over.

He let his gaze climb.

She was spinning a fruit knife between her fingers, lazy, like the edge wasn’t there. Early light caught the blade and slid off it. Sasha Velez looked nothing like the clean, medal-stand version of herself he remembered from before the world ended.

She looked better. Harder. The triathlon years had left her with a body that didn’t apologize for taking up space: shoulders set, waist narrow, hips that filled the jeans, and a chest that strained the worn tank even while she sat still.

The fabric had ridden up on one side. Under it, the swell of her breasts moved with her breathing, full and heavy, the kind of weight that made the thin cotton work. A faint sheen of sweat sat in the hollow of her throat. Her face was striking in a way cameras had never quite caught~high cheekbones, a mouth that looked like it knew how to be cruel, dark eyes that didn’t blink enough.

She felt him looking. The knife stopped.

Then the system spoke, flat and familiar, behind his eyes.

His focus snapped into place so hard it hurt.

”You’re Sasha Velez.” His voice came out rough, scraped raw. ”Triathlon. You took the world title more than once.”

One eyebrow lifted. She set the knife on the sill beside her hip and studied him the way a person studies a door that might be locked.

”You know me.”

”I used to watch you race. Before.” He shifted, and the bandages pulled. White gauze crossed his ribs and wrapped his forearm, neat, tighter than he would have managed alone. ”You did this.”

She dropped off the sill. The landing was quiet. Up close she was taller than he expected, and the tank did even less to hide her. The neckline gaped when she leaned. He saw the inner curve of one breast, the soft shadow beneath it, and had to drag his eyes back to her face.

”You showed up in the middle of the night,” she said. ”Just~appeared. Hit the floor bleeding like something had tried to open you. I wasn’t going to leave you there for whatever came through next.” A small shrug. ”Didn’t think you’d be sitting up. Most people would still be bargaining with God.”

He almost thanked her. Then the rest of the night came back, and the thanks died.

He sat up too fast. Pain tore through his side and he hissed through his teeth. ”The Tiger King. Where is it?”

Her face changed. The curiosity went out of it.

”It took the bats.”

She crossed the room, poured water from a dented bottle into a glass, and held it out. Her fingers brushed his when he took it. Warm. Steady.

”A swarm came over the west lots just after midnight. Dozens. Maybe more. They smelled the blood on you, or they smelled the Core. Doesn’t matter which.” She glanced at the window. ”Your tiger didn’t wait. It went through the glass like the frame was paper. I watched from here.”

Ethan drank. The water was cold and clean and tasted faintly of metal. He didn’t interrupt.

”They hit it in a cloud,” she said, quieter now. ”Wings everywhere. You couldn’t see the street. Just black shapes and that wet sound when they bit. It took the first three out of the air before they knew it had moved. One snap, and a body hit the asphalt in two pieces. Then they learned. They came at the eyes, the belly, the backs of the legs. I heard it roar once~loud enough the glass shivered~and after that it stopped making noise and just killed.”

She rubbed her thumb along the rim of the bottle.

”I counted past thirty before I lost track. Bodies in the road. Wings still twitching. One of them got under it and opened a line along its ribs. Another took a chunk out of the shoulder. It shook them off, crushed the last few against the wall, and stood there breathing hard with blood running into the gutter. Then it looked up at this window. Just once. And it went west. Dawn was already coming. It didn’t come back.”

The room felt smaller after that.

Ethan set the empty glass down. His hand was steadier than it had any right to be. He reached into the Survival Space, and the pale-blue Core came out cool against his palm, light moving under the surface like something alive and half-asleep.

”This is yours.”

Sasha’s eyes caught on it. For a second the hunger showed~plain, human, the look of someone who had been counting days. Then she shut it down.

”No.” She shook her head. ”That’s worth more than a night of bandages. People have killed for less. Last night the bats were tearing each other apart over the Cores in the dead ones. I’m not taking that off you.”

”I’m not asking.” He closed her fingers around it. Her hand was strong. The Core lit the spaces between her knuckles. ”You kept me breathing. That’s the payment.”

He let go.

”And you’re not ordinary,” he said. ”World-class engine, years of work already in the body. If that thing wakes something in you, you won’t be scraping by on old race fitness while everyone else starts throwing fire.”

She stared at the Core. Her thumb moved over it once, slow. Outside, a bird tried a note and thought better of it.

Since the collapse she had stayed alive on discipline and the simple fact that she could still run when other people couldn’t.

That edge was thinning. Ability users were everywhere now~men who burned air, women who moved faster than a blink, things that killed the dead without touching them. Food was harder. Clean water was harder. And her face, her body, had turned into their own kind of problem. Men looked at her the way they looked at locked rooms. She had stopped going out alone. Some nights she slept with the knife in her hand and hated that she had started to.

”I...” She bit her lower lip. The Core pulsed once, faint. ”If I take this, I owe you.”

”You don’t.”

She closed her hand anyway.

”Thank you.” Her voice was low. She met his eyes and didn’t look away. ”If you’re in it later, and I can reach you, I will.”

The system answered before the silence could settle.
