Apocalypse: Every Woman I Invest In Makes Me Stronger

Inside the Survival Space, Ethan Carter stood with the screen still on and did not move.

The Golden-Winged Corpse had used him once already. Because of her, he had walked into a mess that left him opened up and barely standing. She had gotten Daisy Miller out in the end. That did not wipe the ledger. He had no reason to trust a thing with wings and a human voice.

For all he knew, the Museum was another stage and he was the distraction again. Speaking like a person did not make her less of a threat. It only meant she could lie in full sentences.

The problem he could not ignore was simpler. She had found him. The Space had a location now, in her head if nowhere else. Sitting inside forever would not unteach her that. If she could track the fold, something else might learn the same trick.

He needed to know what she wanted. She was the only one outside who might actually say it.

”I’ll go out and meet her.”

Aria and Elena were still coming down from the Hornscale fight. Aria’s arm was wrapped. Elena’s shoulder was stiff under the coat.

”Get your abilities back as fast as you can. If this turns, I’ll pull you both out. Stay ready.”

Aria straightened. ”Want me with you? The vines might matter if she tries something.”

”No.” He shook his head. ”She hasn’t swung yet. I want to hear what she wants before I put another body in front of her.”

Aria looked like she had a reply and swallowed it. She understood he was not doubting the vines. He did not want a second person on that counter if the talk became a fight.

Elena watched his back, the bandages already spotted. ”Those aren’t closed. Don’t push it if you don’t have to.”

”I’ll keep that in mind.”

He looked at them once more, closed his eyes, and let the Space take him. Displacement, brief and cold. He came back behind the counter on the first floor.

Morning had finally made it through the shattered dome. Pale light on wreckage. Glass glittered in the dust. Twisted beams lay among the guts of display cases. For a second the hall looked almost quiet.

Almost. Beyond the broken walls the square was still a war. Roars. Screeches. The thud of bodies that weighed more than cars. Tiger King, Hornscale Beast, and everything that had come to watch them were still at it.

Ethan ignored that and looked at the woman a few meters off.

Fair skin. Delicate face. Long hair moving in the draft off the dome. She could have been a girl on an ordinary street, if you ignored the wings. Gold, each feather catching the sun, a metallic sheen, large enough even folded to hide most of her. On a normal day someone might have called it a costume. The illusion would die the second she moved.

”Ethan. You really are here.”

Cold, still. Clearer than the last time. None of the stiffness that used to sit in her mouth. Her eyes went over him and stopped on the blood-soaked bandages across his back. The corner of her mouth lifted.

”Those Speed Zombies did a number on you.”

His fingers tightened on the sword. He did not answer. He watched her face, the wings, the way her weight sat on her feet. Any shift toward a lunge, he wanted to see it before it started.

She noticed. ”Relax. If I wanted you dead, I wouldn’t have announced myself.”

”That’s supposed to help?”

”Not particularly.”

So flat he almost laughed. Almost. She drew the wings in closer, making a point of not being about to launch.

”I came for the fight. Tiger King and the Hornscale Beast. When I crossed the square I saw a man ringed by mutant monkeys. From up there he looked like you, so I dropped in to check.” Her red eyes narrowed. ”Close enough, I felt the Snake King’s mark. I knew I hadn’t guessed wrong. That’s why I called. I’m not here to fight you.”

He did not lower the sword. ”You expect me to buy that?”

”No. I expect you to decide for yourself.”

Neither of them spoke for a few seconds. He hated that the answer interested him. She was not begging. She was not trying to scare him into nodding. She was stating a position. That did not make her safe. It made the next question worth asking.

”There’s something I’ve been wondering,” she said. ”Aren’t you curious why I can talk like this? Or how I knew your name?”

”I assume you’re about to tell me.”

A faint smile. ”Zombies aren’t only teeth. Not all of us. We evolve by eating Cores. The stronger we get, the more the mind comes back. Hit SS-rank, and a zombie can think like a person again.”

His face tightened. He had suspected it. Hearing it was different. Until now he had treated the strong ones as animals that sometimes acted smart. He had never fully ruled out planning. Now she had put a rank on it.

”Every SS-rank goes back to normal?”

”No. Thinking and looking human aren’t the same thing. Some can plan and still wear a monster’s face. Some never get their memories back. Evolution doesn’t take one road.”

He let that sit. If they could think, the enemy had just gotten worse. A thing that studied a shelter, waited, and used the ground was not the same as a thing that ran at a door. Worse, it could learn from the last failure.

She went on before he could ask. ”Mutated animals work the same way. More Cores, more mind. Quality matters. A strong Core can shove the process forward.” She looked toward the square. ”Snake King. Tiger King. Hornscale Beast. All of them understand speech. Don’t treat them like instinct with teeth.”

His eyes narrowed. That fit too much. The Snake King marking him and sending vipers. The Tiger King watching like it was keeping score. The Hornscale Beast sealing space and throwing attacks back. If they could reason, their moves might have a point he had not seen. If they could talk to each other, the city got uglier.

Great. Just what the apocalypse needed. Monsters that make plans.

He kept it to himself. ”What’s your name? And why me?”

Her eyes came back. ”Kate Kasen. Before this, I was an agent for Bella Rowan and Clara Hayes.”

The name landed. He had heard it from Debbie Miller at Bella’s villa. Kate, the agent for both of them. That explained the stadium. She had not been helping him. She had needed a distraction.

”You said zombies usually need SS-rank to think again. You don’t look like you’re there. Am I wrong?”

For the first time, something like amusement moved in her face. ”I’m an exception. Lucky, if you want the short version.” She brushed a strand of hair off her cheek. ”After it started, vipers chased me near the suburban villas. I ran for the mountains to lose them and walked into a cave. There was an ancient mutated turtle under a rock. Alive. Couldn’t move right. I fought it a long time before it died.”

He did not interrupt.

”I ate the Core. Evolution jumped. My mind came back early. The face followed, bit by bit.” She touched her cheek. ”I don’t know if the turtle was strange or if I got lucky. Either way, I got the benefit.”

He heard what she was not saying. This might not be a normal stage. The Core might have been wrong in a useful way, or her condition and the Core had collided. Not enough to conclude. Enough to know she was not an ordinary zombie anymore.

”After I could think, I went looking for Bella and Clara. Found them in the city center. I hadn’t finished changing, so I couldn’t stand in front of them and call it protection.” Her face darkened. ”Then Max Cole’s people pushed the survivors out of the stronghold and drove them at the stadium. They wanted me in the open.”

He remembered the stadium. Armed men. Heavy weapons. The whole thing coming apart while he tried to get clear.

”They had guns, and his ability was wrong. I couldn’t take them straight. So I used you. Drew their eyes while I got Bella and Clara out.” She met his look and did not soften it. ”I knew it was dangerous for you. I also knew you walk out of things that kill most people.”

His expression went cold. ”So you gambled with my life.”

”Yes.”

No pause. For a moment he thought about ending it there. He could still feel the injuries, the exhaustion in the bone, the math he had done while trying not to die. She had used him as a tool. Caring about Bella and Clara did not make that less selfish.

Killing her would not unwind the stadium. He still needed what she knew, and she had already shown she had pieces he could not get anywhere else. He loosened his grip on the sword. He did not let go.

”How did you get my name?”

”I saved someone who knew you.”

His attention snapped in. ”Daisy?”

Kate nodded. ”Five days ago she went looking for you and ran into Max’s people. They noticed she was pretty and decided to take her alive. I was close.” Her eyes narrowed. ”I’d seen her with you in the forest outside the city. I knew the face. I stopped them before they could move her.”

Something unpleasant turned in his chest. He knew what men like that did when they thought no one was coming.

”Is she safe?”

”With Bella and Clara. Top floor of the Wealth Building, south side of the city.”

He let out a breath he had not known he was holding. Daisy was alive. Days of disasters, and he had not known if she was still in the world. Now he had a building.

Kate caught the change. ”I came to tell you to collect her. I’m leaving Silvermont with Bella and Clara.” She folded her arms. ”Last time I used you to save them. This time I saved Daisy. You pick her up, and the debt is done.”

He looked at her. ”Fine. I’ll find you after I get out of here.” Then, because the stadium was still sitting in his ribs: ”You still owe me for last time. One more thing.”

An eyebrow. ”Which is?”

”Fly me out of the Museum.”

She stared. Then she shook her head. ”Absolutely not.”

His face darkened. ”You didn’t even think about it.”

”I don’t need to.” She pointed at the shattered dome.

He followed her finger. Pale morning sky. Then the shapes. Bats. Hundreds, maybe more, loose formations over the square. Some close to the stone. Some farther out, a moving fence. Wings lost in the light until one broke and dove at the ruin, then climbed again.

His stomach sank. The air was a trap.
