VISION GRID SYSTEM: THE COMEBACK OF RYOMA TAKEDA

Rikiya is the first to claim the space around centre ring. He settles into the upright, relaxed stance that has long defined the Cuban school of boxing, his lead hand hanging loosely in front of him while his rear hand rests high by his cheek.

Light on his feet and perfectly balanced, he drifts across the canvas in small effortless steps, quietly inviting Aramaki to come and find him.

”Come on, champ. Let’s finish what we started.”

Contrary to what many inside Tokyo Dome had expected, Aramaki makes no attempt to rush the opening exchange. He advances behind a high guard, his shoulders loose and his steps measured, taking away the distance one careful stride at a time.

Seeing no urgency from the champion, Rikiya takes the initiative. He begins with a long jab, occasionally doubling it before drifting a step to his left or right, never staying on the same line for more than a moment.

Aramaki makes no attempt to answer. He calmly catches the punches on his gloves and forearms…

Dug.

Dug. Dug.

…then follows each lateral step with a subtle pivot of his lead foot, quietly restoring the angle between them before continuing his measured advance.

Every parry is economical, every feint quietly nudges Rikiya into giving up another fraction of space before Aramaki reclaims the angle. Less than thirty seconds have passed, yet Rikiya already feels something is different.

”...This isn’t the Aramaki we’re used to seeing,” one commentator remarks. ”He hasn’t thrown a single punch yet, but can you feel it? The pressure is already there.”

”That’s exactly what you’d expect from a champion,” his partner replies. ”You don’t climb to the top of a division like this by staying the same fighter. Every challenge leaves something behind, and Aramaki has learned that pressure isn’t just about throwing punches. Sometimes it’s enough to make your opponent feel like the ring is getting smaller.”

After nearly a full minute of allowing the veteran to dictate the range, Aramaki finally flicks out a probing left. The reaction inside Tokyo Dome is immediate, but the jab never comes close to finding its target.

Reading the distance in an instant, Rikiya cuts into the opening with a straight right upstairs before whipping a lead hook toward the body.

But this is exactly the kind of exchange Aramaki wants. His left glove snaps back into guard, smothering the cross with ease.

Dug.

As the hook flies toward his ribs, Aramaki accepts it…

Thud!

…and then he steps into the exchange, driving a straight left through the middle before following it with a heavy overhand right.

Rikiya gets his gloves to block the first punch, but the overhand crashes into his collarbone…

Dug. BUGH!

… jolting him a step backward before he can pivot off the line.

”Both men land clean, but look at the impact! Miyamoto loses his stance for a moment…”

”…And that’s exactly what Aramaki has been looking for!”

Curiously, Aramaki doesn’t rush to capitalize on the opening. He calmly trims away the distance instead, keeping Rikiya square in front of him before sending out a probing jab.

Dug.

Rikiya catches it on his gloves.

Seeing Rikiya’s stance firmly rooted beneath him, Aramaki decides to press a little further.

He adds another jab...

Dug.

...and immediately drops his left hand toward his hip, loading up a lead hook to the body.

But as the lead hook tears toward his body, Rikiya immediately steps to his right, moving away from the arc of Aramaki’s left hand.

The punch cuts through empty space as Rikiya slips outside the angle. At the same time, his right glove snaps forward…

Dsh!

…catching Aramaki cleanly before the champion can reset.

Aramaki’s expression changes for the first time.

Damn it.

He won’t even let me get to the third punch

From the red corner, Nakahara immediately shouts.

”Keep your guard high, Aramaki!”

Aramaki follows the instruction without hesitation. He returns to stalking Miyamoto patiently, his gloves remaining firmly in position.

For the next several moments, Aramaki simply waits, allowing the veteran to dictate the pace without giving him any unnecessary openings.

Then when the opportunity appears again, Aramaki tests it again with a double jab before committing to a right cross.

The first jab meets Rikiya’s guard.

Dug.

The second is immediately brushed aside as Rikiya takes a sharp step to his right, already leaving the line of attack.

By the time Aramaki releases the right hand, the veteran is no longer there. Rikiya is already outside the angle, his left glove snapping forward in a quick flicking motion.

Fortunately, Aramaki’s left guard remains high.

Dug.

The punch lands harmlessly against his forearm.

And that is when Aramaki finally understands the rule he needs to follow for this round.

Ryoma was right.

I can’t recklessly force anything beyond two punches.

***

From that point onward, Aramaki changes the way he approaches the fight. He continues stalking Rikiya, forcing the veteran to keep moving while throwing only one or two punches at a time.

For a brief period, the fight takes on an unusual rhythm. It resembles a matador controlling a charging bull, except the bull in this case is no longer blindly rushing forward.

Aramaki is still the one applying pressure, but he is no longer giving Rikiya unnecessary chances to escape.

But then, with thirty seconds remaining in the round, Nakahara strikes the canvas from the apron.

”Now’s the time. Step it up.”

Aramaki catches the signal, and the change is immediate.

His steps become sharper. They are still minimal, still controlled, but his adjustments are quicker, and his feints come more frequently, forcing Rikiya to constantly question whether the next movement is real or not.

The veteran continues circling and touching him with jabs, refusing to stand still, but the pressure around him is different now.

It is no longer just a man walking forward. It is a man gradually taking away every available option.

Then, for a brief moment, Aramaki dips lower than usual on his left knee. And Rikiya’s instincts react before thought can follow.

”The gazelle punch?”

Rikiya immediately retreats, not with a side step, but by moving backward and away from the line, expecting the explosive attack that had changed their first encounter.

”Ah, he almost had him!” one commentator shouts. ”Aramaki nearly created the opening everyone was waiting for!”

”But look at Miyamoto’s reaction,” the other replies. ”The moment Aramaki gave even the slightest indication of that attack, the veteran denied the opportunity before Aramaki could turn it into anything.”

The punch never comes. And what everyone doesn’t realize is that the dip was nothing more than a feint while Aramaki simply keeps advancing.

He continues cutting the ring, guiding Rikiya toward the corner while the veteran is still adjusting to the threat that never arrived.

By the time Rikiya realizes what is happening, there is no longer enough space to escape cleanly. He manages to slip away to his left, avoiding the corner itself. But the ropes are already behind him.

”Finally, we might see something here,” one commentator says, his voice rising. ”For the first time tonight, Miyamoto is the one being forced to fight where he doesn’t want to be.”

”That’s the pressure Aramaki has been building,” the other replies. ”He hasn’t been chasing him recklessly. He’s been taking away space, piece by piece, and now Miyamoto has to find a way out before the champion can start working.”

Rikiya immediately shifts into a Philly Shell, his lead shoulder turning inward as his right hand protects his chin. It is a defensive position built for survival, reducing the target Aramaki has in front of him.

But Aramaki understands exactly what he is seeing. He isn’t looking for the clean shot. He just starts breaking down the shell itself.

The champion drives heavy punches into the guard, hammering the shoulders, the arms, the body whenever a gap appears.

Dug. Dug. Dug.

Dug. Dug. Thud! Dug. Thud!

Rikiya absorbs each impact behind the shell, his shoulder rolling and gloves shifting to redirect as much of the force as possible.

The crowd erupts with every heavy impact, reacting to the relentless pressure unfolding in the final seconds of the round.

”Look at the strength behind those punches!” one commentator shouts.

”And this is where the physicality starts to matter,” the other replies. ”Miyamoto is blocking everything correctly, but every second spent absorbing this kind of pressure still takes something away from the body.”

Rikiya remains composed inside the shell, while waiting for the smallest opening to unleash his coiling counter.

But that opening never appears. Aramaki refuses to overextend, continuing to break down the veteran’s defense with heavy, calculated pressure until the final seconds disappear.

Ding!

The bell rings, and the referee immediately steps between them.

Aramaki calmly pulls his hands back, his composure never breaking despite the intensity of the exchange that just unfolded.

Across from him, Rikiya lowers his guard slightly. A faint numbness lingers through his left limb, his breathing is heavier than he would like to admit.

”Unbelievable,” one commentator says as the arena settles down. ”Nobody expected the opening round to unfold like this. Everyone remembered their first encounter. Many believed Miyamoto would once again control the pace, using his experience and technical ability to keep Aramaki from establishing his pressure.”

”But instead,” the other adds, ”we saw something completely different. The champion didn’t chase blindly. He stayed patient, broke down the veteran’s defense, and forced him to fight every second of the round.”

For all the pressure Aramaki applied, he seemed to have done most of the work. Yet somehow, Rikiya is the one carrying the physical reminder of those final seconds.

And that changes Rikiya’s evaluation of the man standing across from him. This is not the same one-dimensional fighter he once faced. Aramaki has grown into an elite fighter.
