Nishida, the head of distribution—a heavyset man in his early sixties who spent his career navigating the labyrinthine logistics of Japanese media delivery routes—stared at the wall whiteboard for several minutes. He wore the troubled expression of a man building toward a heavy question.

”Shueisha,” Nishida named the dragon in the room. ”The publisher of *Jump*. They will respond to this.”

”I welcome their response,” Marvin said evenly.

”They possess six decades of distributor relationships.” Nishida gripped the edge of the table. ”They hold legacy rack priority agreements with every major convenience store chain and bookstore network in Japan. A glossy new magazine, emerging from a newly acquired publisher, competing directly for the shōnen demographic...” Nishida paused, shaking his head. ”They will make angry phone calls. Distribution agreements currently carrying our existing, older catalog risk termination if we anger them.”

”That represents an accurate, sober assessment of the risk,” Marvin acknowledged calmly. ”Walk me through our current, active distributor relationships.”

Nishida detailed the network. It took twenty minutes of dry logistical reporting. By the end of the breakdown, Marvin categorized the map.

He identified three distribution partnerships robust enough to withstand pressure, and two regional networks highly vulnerable to Shueisha’s corporate bullying.

”The two vulnerable relationships,” Marvin tapped his chin. ”What do those specific partners value most in a distribution agreement?”

”Guaranteed volume commitments,” Nishida answered immediately. ”And fast payment terms. The independent distributors operating in the regional markets survive on razor-thin margins. They need highly predictable, safe cash flow to keep their trucks running.”

”Then we will offer them vastly better payment terms than they currently receive from any other legacy publisher in Tokyo.” Marvin made the decision instantly. ”We make the terms attractive enough to create a genuine, painful switching cost if they abandon us. Furthermore, we offer them volume guarantees for eighteen months, fully underwritten by our capital facility. Even if the initial newsstand sales fail to materialize at the projected level right away, the distributors remain entirely protected. They get paid regardless.”

Nishida stared at the boy, his bushy eyebrows raised.

”You absorb the entire volume risk yourself.” Nishida summarized the strategy.

”In the distribution partnership, yes.” Marvin confirmed. ”We need those trucks on the road and our magazine on the shelves. Underwriting the volume guarantee costs a fraction of the cost incurred by lacking distribution coverage in those regional markets at launch. I will buy their loyalty until the product earns it naturally.”

Yamamoto kept his pen poised over his notepad. ”The convenience store chains act as the critical battleground. Lawson, 7-Eleven, FamilyMart. *Jump’s* rack position right by the front register is—”

”Non-negotiable from Shueisha’s side.” Marvin finished the sentence. ”They will defend that real estate with lawyers. We will not waste our energy competing for *Jump’s* existing rack position. We will negotiate for *incremental* rack space. We argue to the store managers that *Shōnen Blaze* attracts a buyer who is not currently buying *Jump*, rather than a reader choosing between the two. A teenager buying our magazine for the premium format, the mature storytelling, and the collectible cards does not represent a reader who would have settled for a monochrome issue of *Jump* instead. We expand the category spent for the store, bringing them new money.”

”Will the major chains accept that theoretical argument?” Doubt laced Yamamoto’s question.

”The chains accept any arguments supported by purchase data.” Marvin stated the business reality. ”We need months of explosive sales data from our independent distribution footprint to build the undeniable argument for the major chains. The channels we already possess and the new regional partnerships we establish today will handle the launch distribution. By month three, when the sales trajectory proves our demand.”

The meeting ran at a relentless pace for three hours. The catered bento boxes brought in earlier sat mostly untouched on a side table—the intense working lunch produced a vision vastly more compelling than the food.

Tanaka looked down the long table at the boy occupying the chairman’s seat.

He turned this final question over in his mind for the entire duration of the meeting, formulating it carefully to avoid causing offense.

”President.” Tanaka dropped his voice into a quiet, serious register. ”The content itself. The ten series sitting in front of us.” He gestured toward the open briefcases. ”This material... the breathtaking quality of the art, the staggering volume of the pages... it represents an extraordinary, herculean investment of creative labor. Seven hundred to nine hundred pages per series. Ten different series. This was all produced before you even called this meeting.”

”Yes.” Marvin confirmed.

”By whom?”

The boardroom grew still. The other executives stopped breathing, awaiting the answer.

”By me.” Marvin delivered the truth.

Tanaka studied him for a long moment. He looked down at the binder resting in front of him—the *Fullmetal Alchemist* volume holding its vibrant colored pages, its precise kanji, its compositional mastery rivaling the legends of the industry.

”You are twelve years old.” Tanaka articulated a biological fact requiring rational acknowledgment. It sounded like a statement, not an accusation.

”Yes.” Marvin agreed.

”And you produced this material with your own hands.”

”Yes.”

Tanaka looked back down at the binder. He lived his life in publishing for twenty-eight years.

He read thousands of rough manuscripts, reviewed hundreds of completed works, and collaborated with dozens of the industry’s significant, temperamental artists. He knew exactly what artistic mastery looked like.

He understood the vast, unbridgeable difference between excellent, professional work and work operating in a completely different, transcendent category.

The pages sitting in this binder belonged in that transcendent category in fact at the very top of it.

He picked the binder up. He turned to a random page deep in the stack—Chapter six, a midpoint conversational scene. A transitional page truly revealed an artist’s skill when navigating the sustained, quiet middle of a narrative, rather than drawing an explosive opening showcase.

The page sat flawless. Not merely flawless in the technical sense of clean ink. Flawless in the sense of every creative decision executing perfectly. The rhythm of the panels guided the eye perfectly. The subtle emotion in the character’s expression conveyed volumes without text. The shifting color temperature in the background perfectly carried the scene’s melancholic emotional register.

He gently set the binder back down on the teak wood.

”I see.” Tanaka spoke softly. He carried the quiet tone of a proud man encountering something entirely exceeding his existing framework of reality, choosing to gracefully accept this new truth rather than stubbornly resist it.

He stood up from his chair. He bowed. It was the specific, deep, sustained bow of a veteran offering profound respect to someone undeniably earning it.

”We will execute your vision, President.” Emotion thickened Tanaka’s vow. ”All of us. We will pour our lives into this magazine. We will not fail you.”

Around the long table, the other six executives rose to their feet and bowed deeply in unison.

Marvin surveyed the row of bowed heads with the composed quality serving as his natural mode when a complex operation resolved exactly as calculated. The emotions hummed warmly in the air, cementing their newfound awe, ensuring their respect would curdle into fanatic devotion in the years to come.

”I know you won’t fail.” His velvet voice wrapped around them. ”That is exactly why you are still sitting in your chairs.”

The executives eventually filed out of the boardroom. They arrived with a pessimistic understanding of their corporate situation, but left carrying an energized purpose. The harsh renovation sounds resumed their prominence in the hallway as the glass door closed—the whining drills and pounding hammers of a building remaking itself to match its new destiny.

Amy remained seated at the table. She reviewed her dense notes with the focused efficiency of someone whose job involved converting a three-hour visionary meeting into a hundred actionable checklist items.

”The distribution guarantee commitment.” She tapped her pen. ”The capital exposure runs approximately forty-five million yen if both of those vulnerable regional partnerships require the full eighteen-month underwriting safety net.”

”Which represents less than five percent of the available loan facility we secured from Sato.” Marvin stood up and buttoned his suit jacket. ”It is the correct, necessary expenditure to secure the map.”

”Tanaka.” She looked up from her notes and pushed her glasses up her nose. ”He’s going to act as a very important piece on the board.”

”He understood the value of the content immediately.” Genuine respect colored Marvin’s tone. ”Twenty-eight years of editorial experience, and he knew within the first ten pages exactly what he held. That kind of sharp, unclouded reader remains rare.” He paused, looking toward the door. ”He also asked the right question at the end.”

”About who actually produced the material.”

”Most people sitting in his position would have blindly accepted the corporate attribution without question to keep their jobs, or aggressively challenged it with hostile skepticism to protect their pride.” Marvin knows human nature. ”He asked the question directly, received the answer directly, evaluated the evidence in his hands, and then revised his worldview to match reality. That demonstrates the exact quality of fluid intelligence this operation desperately needs at the editorial level.”

Amy made a final notation in her binder and closed it.

Outside the thick glass windows, Tokyo conducted its busy afternoon routine, operating as a sprawling city pushing through the painful process of rebuilding after a significant financial shock. The mood on the streets felt cautious and deliberate, carrying the weight of the preceding recessionary years, yet generating the kinetic energy of a place stubbornly continuing forward.

Inside, the boy stood in the executive boardroom of a publishing company acquired merely eight weeks ago, looking down at ten metal briefcases.

The work began.

And yet, in some vital ways, it had already reached completion. The upcoming publication functioned simply as the logistical distribution of genius already existing on the page.

The real work—building the physical infrastructure around the art, training the right people to execute the delivery, and establishing the complex corporate relationships making the empire sustainable—that was exactly what the next eighteen months of his life demanded.

He turned away from the window.

”Let’s go down and look at the printing facility,” he instructed.

Amy stood, gathering her materials.

They walked out into the dusty corridor where the renovation continued. They moved past sweating men in hardhats wielding drills and sledgehammers, past crates of new printing equipment arriving on wooden pallets. They walked right into the productive noise of a legacy building becoming something vastly different from its past.

*Shōnen Blaze* officially launched on September 1st.

In two short months.

Three Weeks Later – Meyers Media Japan Headquarters, Minato, Tokyo

The change hung unmistakable in the air, thick like ozone before a thunderstorm.

Three weeks later, the atmosphere inside the Meyers Media Japan lot completely transformed.

Three weeks ago, when Marvin first laid out his sweeping vision in that cramped, paint-fumed conference room, silent, polite skepticism dominated the atmosphere.

The legacy Japanese executives—hardened men surviving the catastrophic collapse of the 1980s bubble economy, cynically watching arrogant foreign investors come and go like tourists through a revolving door—had nodded respectfully, their faces unreadable masks of professional deference.

But Marvin’s eyes pierced the veil. He identified the cold, pragmatic truth buried beneath their bows. They waited for him to fail. They waited for the American money to dry up, and for the boy to fly back to Los Angeles in defeat.

He didn’t blame them. If he sat in their chairs, analyzing the insanity of the proposed timeline, he would have expected a collapse, too.

But the dynamic fundamentally shifted.

The massive loan facility from the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi officially cleared the wire. The bank didn’t draw down the full amount at once—Norman Mineta structured the debt in staggered tranches to minimize immediate interest bleed—but the first nine-figure deposit proved to the entire building that the money existed terrifyingly real. Following the cash, the first aggressive wave of corporate acquisitions legally closed.

The initial, paralyzing shock of Marvin’s arrival burned away entirely, replaced by an electric, feverish energy crackling through the corridors.

The six-story building, nestled deep in the affluent Minato ward, hummed like an overworked diesel engine.

Outside those glass doors, the broader Japanese economy actively suffocated.

The toxic fallout from the 1997 Asian market crash relentlessly dragged legacy corporations into the ground. Daily, brutal layoffs flooded the humid Tokyo streets with white-collar workers praying for a lifeline, and major banks slammed their vault doors shut on struggling, generational businesses.

Survival in 1998 Tokyo proved rare; securing a stable, high-paying job with a well-capitalized firm felt akin to winning a lottery ticket.

Because of that grim, undeniable reality, the employees inside Meyers Media Japan didn’t just casually clock in for a shift—they went to war. Every single new hire, and every converted veteran executive, poured one hundred and twenty percent of their waking souls into their roles.
