She read the passage where Shifu, having finally accepted that his method must change entirely, trains Po not through discipline but through *desire* — through understanding that Po’s capacity for excellence was inseparable from his love of the thing.

*You have to train the person who is there,* Shifu understood at last. *Not the person you wished had arrived.*

Bey sat with that for a long moment.

She thought about her father’s boot camp. The summers of drilling — hours of footwork and breath control and hitting marks and projecting energy to the back wall of a room. She had done what was asked, always. She had been good, always. But there was a specific quality of joy she had when the structure was removed — when the track came on and her body simply responded before her mind could organize a decision — that was different from the joy of executing correctly. Both were real. Both mattered. But they were not the same thing.

She was fifteen and she was already thinking about this.

She put the book down on the counter and looked at her reflection in the mirror across the salon — the tired girl in the rehearsal clothes, the good bones and the steady eyes — and she thought, with a clarity that didn’t feel like thought so much as recognition: *I already know what I am. The work now is just to become it fully.*

”Mama,” she called.

Tina appeared from the back.

”Do you think Daddy’s going to get the meeting?”

Tina sat down in the styling chair beside her daughter. She was tired in a way that she didn’t show around the girls — the specific, deep tiredness of a woman carrying more than her share of a very large thing. But she sat straight, and her voice was steady.

”Your father is going to get every meeting he goes after,” Tina said. ”That’s who he is.”

Bey looked at her mother. ”And if the label isn’t right?”

”Then it won’t be the last label. There are other meetings.” Tina reached over and tucked a strand of hair back from Bey’s face. ”You don’t need to carry that. That’s our job.”

”I know.” Bey picked up the book again, turning it over in her hands. ”Someone left this.”

”LeToya.”

”It’s good.”

Tina looked at the cover. ”A panda.”

”A panda who becomes a warrior.” Bey set it back on the counter. ”There’s a line in it. About how yesterday is history and tomorrow is mystery and today is a gift. That’s why it’s called the present.”

Tina was quiet for a moment.

”That’s an amazing line, showing the thought process behind it.” she said.

”It is.” Bey looked at the mirror again. ”I think I want to start writing more. Not just practicing the songs other people wrote. Writing my own.”

Tina looked at her daughter’s reflection beside her own. Two women — one just beginning and one who had been building the scaffolding for the beginning for years — looking at each other in a salon mirror after a long night.

”Then start,” Tina said simply.

Bey nodded once. The nod of someone who has made a decision.

She would.

Mumbai, India —

The apartment in Bandra sat on the fourth floor of a building that looked across a tangle of rooftops and telephone wires toward the dark line of the Arabian Sea. When the windows were open — and tonight they were not, the December air carrying a dampness that justified the slight chill of glass between the inside and the outside — you could hear the distant rhythm of the water.

The apartment was not large by the standards of the city’s elite. It was well-organized, well-maintained, and filled with the particular quality of objects that a family chooses for function and keeps for years — bookshelves built to hold the specific number of books they contained, a writing desk worn smooth at the surface, framed photographs placed with the quiet deliberateness of people who understood that a home was also an argument, a position, a declaration of what mattered.

Krishnaraj, a marine biologist, sat in the armchair near the window with a stack of academic journals beside him and the focused, half-absent expression of a man whose mind was in two places at once — nominally reading, actually working through something else. He was a careful, intelligent man, the kind of father who had raised his daughter to consistently secure first ranks through school, who had watched her proceed through the world with the patient, structured certainty of someone who had been given, by upbringing and by nature, an uncommon steadiness.

Her mother Vrinda hummed something from the kitchen — the low, continuous murmur of a woman comfortable in her home, moving through the familiar tasks of the evening with the unhurried ease of someone who had organized this household with a quiet, absolute competence for as long as Ash could remember.

Twenty-three-year-old Ash sat in the velvet armchair in the corner.

She had won the Miss World title in 1994, two years earlier. In the months since, her life had reorganized itself around a new center of gravity, one she hadn’t sought and hadn’t entirely anticipated. She was recognizable now in ways that changed the texture of ordinary things — the trip to the market, the morning walk, the quiet dinner with her family that was somehow both entirely the same as it had always been and subtly altered by the awareness that it was no longer entirely private.

Fame was a particular kind of weather. You could dress for it, but you couldn’t make it not exist.

She had initially wanted to study medicine, then architecture. She had enrolled in the Rachana Sansad Academy of Architecture and been genuinely serious about it — the problem-solving, the structural logic, the way a building could be an argument made in materials. She understood, even now, why she had wanted that life. It was legible. It had a grammar she already spoke.

Instead, she was fielding film offers from directors like Mani Ratnam and preparing for her screen debut while navigating the enormous, ungainly machinery of the Indian public’s attention. She was reading scripts for her Tamil debut, studying dialogue in a language she was still perfecting, spending hours with voice coaches on the particular quality of stillness that translated to a camera in ways that stage presence didn’t. She was working. She was always working. The discipline of the pageant circuit had simply transferred, seamlessly, to the discipline of the screen.

But tonight the scripts were set aside. The voice coach’s notes were on the desk, unreviewed. Tonight she had been given something else by a film director she’d met for lunch — a children’s book, of all things, pressed into her hands across a restaurant table with the slightly embarrassed enthusiasm of a man who said, *I know this seems strange but you’ll understand when you read it, it’s doing something with Eastern philosophy that I haven’t seen a Western author attempt with this level of honesty.*

She had opened it on the taxi ride home, half-skeptical.

She was three-quarters through it now.

Her green-blue eyes moved across the English text with the focused absorption of someone reading in a language they have inhabited long enough to feel at home in — not performing comprehension but actually inside it, following the movement of the story with the specific pleasure of a person who had loved reading since childhood and had never entirely stopped, regardless of what else life was asking of her.

She reached the sequence where Oogway is about to leave — the scene on the peach tree hill, the moon enormous and close, the old master preparing to depart in a manner so gentle it barely registered as departure until it was complete. She read slowly here. She had learned, with this book, to read the quiet moments slowly.

*”There are no accidents,”* Oogway said.

Ash set the book down in her lap.

She looked at the ceiling for a moment — the familiar ceiling of this apartment, the one she had looked at from childhood, the one that had been above her through every version of who she had been so far.

She had not intended to be here. She had intended to be an architect, then a doctor, then — for a long time — a private person pursuing a private life. She had been standing in her own plans, organized and directed, when the current of something else had simply picked her up and moved her.

She had tried, briefly, to swim against it. She had submitted to it eventually. She had decided, some time in the last year, to stop treating it as something that had happened to her and to begin treating it as something she was going to inhabit fully — on her own terms, with her own compass, without surrendering the self that existed before the crown.

The director had been right. This author had done something unusual. The philosophy was not decorative. It was not the Western tendency to consume Eastern wisdom by extracting its aesthetics and discarding its roots — the fortune cookie flattening of something deep into something palatable. This was the real thing, offered whole. The Taoist understanding of *wu wei* — the principle of non-forcing, of aligning oneself with the natural direction of things rather than constantly fighting toward an externally imposed direction — was present in every structural choice the story made. It wasn’t explained. It was demonstrated.

*One often meets one’s destiny on the road one takes to avoid it.*

She traced the line with her fingertip.

She had avoided the road that led here. She had tried multiple alternate routes. And here she was — on the road she had avoided, finding, with some surprise, that she recognized the landscape.

”Ash.” Her father’s voice from across the room. He had set down his journal and was watching her with the quiet, attentive expression of a man who had been observing his daughter for twenty-three years and could read the particular quality of her silences the way other people read text.

”Papa.”

”Good?”

She looked down at the book in her lap, at the cover with the round, ridiculous, endearing panda on it, at the name *Marvin Meyers* in the small type at the bottom.

”Very good,” she said. She closed it carefully. ”An American author. A children’s book.”

Her father tilted his head. ”A children’s book that makes you look like that.”

”It’s not really a children’s book,” she said. ”I mean — it is. But it’s also something else.” She held it up so he could see the cover. ”There’s a passage I want to read to you.”

He set down the journal entirely, giving her the specific quality of attention that she had grown up understanding as his version of love — not demonstrative, not effusive, but total. She had his complete focus.

She found the page.

She read it aloud in the quiet apartment, her voice steady and certain, while outside the sea moved in its ancient, indifferent rhythm and the city of Mumbai arranged its ten million lives around them.

Her mother appeared in the kitchen doorway, drying her hands, listening.

When Ash finished reading, the apartment was quiet for a moment.

”Who is this author?” her father asked.

She turned to the back cover. ”It says very little. A name. Marvin Meyers.” She looked at the photograph — the small, formal author photograph in the corner. A child’s face, she thought. Though the eyes were — something else. Something she couldn’t quite place. ”American. Lives in California.”

”Young?” her father asked.

”It is possible, though I am uncertain as there is no additional information available.,” she said. Though she didn’t know, quite, how young.

Nobody did. Not yet.

---

On the twenty-seventh of December, 1996, in a house that was already quiet by ten o’clock because its owner believed in sleep and schedules, Marvin sat at his desk and reviewed the week’s sales figures that his Random House representative had sent by courier that afternoon.
