Wolf Princess Sold to the Dragon King

The door opened.

Two guards froze in the doorframe, looking like they’d walked in on their parents having sex.

One looked at Blair. One looked at Guinevere. Both looked at each other.

Kael turned his head, his expression bright. ”Does this make you uncomfortable?”

Guinevere’s face was still buried in her hands. The cuffs jingled against her forehead. Neither guard answered. Neither guard moved.

”Is the prisoner... alright?” one guard managed after a moment, gesturing at Guinevere’s buried face.

”No. She is not alright,” Guinevere answered from her palms.

”She’s fine. She’s reflecting,” Kael said.

”On what?” the other guard asked.

”On the consequences of other people’s decisions.”

”Is this some form of hostage situation?”

”Does she look like a hostage?”

Everyone looked at Guinevere. Cuffed. Cradled. Face hidden. Bright red. Jingling.

”A little bit,” the second guard said.

”She’s a voluntary hostage.”

”I am NOT voluntary,” Guinevere said through her fingers.

”She’s participating in the dialogue. Hostages don’t participate.”

The logic was flawless in the way that only wrong logic can be. Guinevere wanted to argue. Arguing would prove his point. Not arguing would prove his other point. The trap was airtight and smelled like dragon.

”Kael.”

”Bad wolf girl. Let the big boys talk,” Kael said.

”KAEL.”

”Wolf girl.”

”Put me down.”

”Make me.”

”Kael, put her down,” Blair snapped from Damon’s lap.

The command came from a woman who was also on a lap, which diluted its authority by exactly the amount that Kael needed to dismiss it. He dismissed it. The dismissal was a smirk. The smirk said glass houses, sister.

The guards exchanged another glance. One of them shrugged. The shrug was surrender dressed as indifference. Both guards had independently concluded that this room was above their pay grade, below their comprehension, and outside every protocol they had been trained on.

They put the boxes down on the table and left without another word. The phrase they used when the door closed was ”the fuck.”

Beta Draven pulled the first box towards him and began sorting, ignoring the two lap sitters in the small room the size of a closet. Briggs took the second. Files hit the table in organized stacks as both men moved through the contents with the quiet efficiency of professionals who treated evidence the way surgeons treat instruments: gloved, focused, and aware that one fumble changed the outcome.

Blair reached across the table and started pulling files. Sorting. Scanning headers. Discarding irrelevant pages into a pile on the table with the speed of a woman who had been reading political documents since she could hold paper. Damon’s left arm settled around her waist to keep her balanced while she leaned forward. His right hand took a page she held up without looking at him.

He read it. She read the next one. He held her steady. She held the stack. The rhythm was immediate and wordless, two people dividing labor across a shared surface that happened to be their bodies, operating like a unit that had been doing this for years.

”Look at this,” she said, tilting a page towards him.

He leaned his chin over her shoulder to read it. His eyes moved down the page. His free hand came up and pointed to a clause in the third paragraph.

”I was wondering when you’d see that,” Blair said.

”It took me four seconds. You had it in two. I could tell because you stopped breathing.”

”I did not stop breathing.”

”You held your breath for one and a half seconds when you hit that clause. Your ribcage is against my chest, Princess. I have data.”

She laughed. The laugh was short and warm and surprised out of her and she turned her head to say something back and their faces were three inches apart and the something was dead on arrival.

She turned back to the file. He turned back to the file. Both of them pretended the three inches hadn’t happened. Both of them were lying.

”I thought you two were going to kiss right there,” Brennan commented lightly.

Across the table, Kael’s eye twitched. ”What the hell is this shit?”

”Reading, Kael. Try it some time,” Blair answered flatly.

Briggs pulled a small crystal out of one box and held it up to the light.

”Does anyone know what this is?” he asked the table.

Brennan leaned forward from his end of the table, head tilting, eyes narrowing at the crystal.

”That’s the same crystal that they used for those mug shots. Luminari magic will project the image.”

”So this would be the evidence,” Beta Draven stated. His voice was level. His eyes were on the crystal but his brain was already three moves ahead, calculating what images the prosecution considered damning enough to preserve in light-based technology and hand over as discovery.

”Yes,” Brennan replied. ”But it can only be viewed by Luminari magic. Their crystals respond to their light. Mage magic, dragon fire, wolf strength, none of those are going to activate it.”

Kael reached across the table with Guinevere still in his lap and picked up a crystal. He held it flat in his palm. Closed his eyes. Focused.

Nothing happened.

The crystal sat in his palm like a paperweight with ambitions it couldn’t fulfill.

”Yeah, I got nothing,” Kael said, setting it back on the table.

Guinevere looked at the crystal. Looked at the door. Looked at the crystal again.

Made a decision.

She launched off Kael’s lap like a hostage ejecting from a catapult she’d been loading for twenty minutes. Kael’s arms closed on nothing. His hands patted his own thighs twice, the confused searching of a man whose emotional support wolf had just bolted, and by the time his brain filed the report, her cuffs were jingling out the door.

”Hold on one moment,” she called behind her before it closed.

Briggs stood up so fast his chair scraped the stone. Beta Draven was on his feet half a second behind him. Damon stood up, still holding Blair against him, who continued reading unbothered and stood with him.

Three men, standing, staring at an empty doorway where a prisoner had just walked out of a secure meeting room without asking permission, without hesitation, and without any apparent awareness that prisoners do not do that.

Kael was still staring at his empty lap, processing the lap theft the way a cat looks at a countertop where a fish used to be. Confusion. Offense. The slow, grinding acceptance that the fish was faster than the cat and the cat would need to live with that.

His arms slowly lowered. The lowering was the saddest thing Brennan had ever seen.

Beta Draven opened his mouth just as the door opened.
