Wolf Princess Sold to the Dragon King

Then Paul appeared. Paul, who had been defended by his friend Kevin during the arrest, who had been the subject of ”Paul wouldn’t” during the clapping ovation, sat down beside the old man with the quiet commitment of a man who had made a decision about where he wanted to be and the decision was here.

Then another inmate. One she hadn’t met. He sat behind Paul with zero introduction and the body language of someone joining a line whose purpose he hadn’t confirmed but whose location seemed correct.

Then another.

Guinevere looked up from the book. Four people were sitting on the ground in front of her bench, arranged in a loose semicircle, looking at her with the collective expectation of an audience that had assembled itself without being asked.

”Oh.” Her face softened. ”Would you like me to read it out loud?”

The old man gave a single nod. The nod carried the weight of a man who had been eating meals alone in a cell for three days and missed the sound of a voice that wasn’t his own.

”Of course.”

She said it the way a woman says of course when a child asks for one more story before bed. The children were grown men with criminal records and neck tattoos, granted, but it was the same thing.

She cleared her throat. Straightened her spine. Adjusted the book so the light from the trellises caught the glowing script at the correct angle for her eyes.

She started from the beginning.

Her voice carried across the yard in a cadence that didn’t belong in a prison. It was warm and measured and unhurried, the voice of a woman who understood that reading aloud was a gift and the gift deserved its full wrapping. She gave the merchant a voice that was tired and hopeful. She gave the sea a rhythm that matched the breeze moving through the trellises. She gave the mountain a weight that made grown men lean forward.

By the end of Chapter one, there were eight people sitting in front of her.

By the middle of Chapter two, there were fourteen. Inmates had migrated from the pull-up bars, the walking paths, the card games. They approached the way people approach a campfire: drawn by something they couldn’t name and unwilling to leave once they arrived.

A guard tapped the guard next to him. The flow was one-directional. Every path in the yard led to the same bench. He had seen this once before, during a riot, except the direction had been the exit and the motivation had been survival.

Kael noticed the migration during a hand he was winning. His card opponents had thinned. Two of the four had abandoned the game to join the audience and the remaining two kept glancing over their shoulders.

”Focus,” Kael said, tapping the stone.

The tapping did nothing. Focus had left the building. Focus had joined the book club. Focus was sitting in the third row.

”The merchant just found the door in the mountain,” one of them said. ”I want to hear what’s behind it.”

”What’s behind it is your dessert if you don’t play your hand.”

The man played his hand. Lost. Looked at the book. Looked at Kael. Made a decision. He stood up and walked to the semicircle and sat down. Kael watched him go with the expression of a man whose card empire was being dismantled by a cute wolf girl reading a story out loud.

His last opponent, who he was getting information out of, was gone. Absorbed by the book club like a ship into fog.

By Chapter three, she had thirty.

Three-zero. The number of inmates who were supposed to be exercising, fighting, planning escapes, or doing any of the things inmates do in yards. Instead, they were sitting on the stone ground of a Luminari prison yard, arranged in concentric rows around a bench where a woman in a grey jumpsuit read a story about a merchant and a mountain.

The man with the face tattoos, the tax evader from the cell across the corridor, was sitting in the second row. His arms were crossed. His jaw was set. His scar bisected his left eyebrow at a permanent angle of hostility. Every visual cue on his body said this is a man who does not do story time.

Guinevere paused at the end of a Chapter. The natural break. The breath between sections where a reader looks up and checks if the audience is still there.

”Don’t stop.” The voice came from the second row. Low. Rough. The voice of a man who had survived things that didn’t have names and was currently sitting on a stone floor because a woman’s voice had found the one door in his chest that he had forgotten to lock. ”The merchant just got to the mountain. I need to know what happens.”

Guinevere looked at him. The man with the tattoos and the scar and the tax evasion charge. The man who had said ”respect” to her twice and meant it both times.

She continued reading. The audience shifted forward as a single body. Thirty people leaning toward a bench where a glowing woman in handcuffs held a book and gave them the only thing she had left to give, which was her voice and her time and the specific kindness of a person who treated every stranger like they mattered because they did.

Kael abandoned the card table. His last two opponents had left ten minutes ago. The information he wanted was his.

He crossed the yard and stood at the back of the crowd. Arms crossed. Leaning against the garden wall. A vine curled toward his shoulder and he let it stay because he was a man who had accepted that the botanicals in this kingdom had opinions and fighting them was a waste of energy.

She read. The yard listened.

Kael Ashenvale, ex-war criminal, half-blood bastard, dragon of Drakencrest, and the most competitive card player in Solveil’s correctional system, stood in the back of a story time audience in prison and watched the woman he had fallen in love with turn thirty hardened criminals into a book club.

Thirty-one, if he counted himself. He was not counting himself. He was standing. Standing was different from sitting. Standing was supervision. Standing was security. Standing was definitely not participating in story time.

He was never going to tell anyone about this. He was also never going to forget it.
