Wolf Princess Sold to the Dragon King

Kael Ashenvale had been in prison for six hours and was already running the yard’s underground economy. Guinevere Lunaris had been in prison for six hours and was already running its soul.

A group of inmates were sitting in a circle near the far wall, cards spread across a stone slab that functioned as a table. Four men. One deck. The body language of people who had been playing long enough to develop grudges and short enough to still care about winning.

One of them looked up. Looked at Kael. Looked at the cuffs. Looked at the runes fading on his forearms. Made a decision that would cost him later.

”You play?”

Kael glanced at the circle. Assessed the cards. Assessed the men. Assessed the skill level in under two seconds based on how they held their hands, which was badly, all of them, the grip of men who thought they were good and had never met someone who was.

”Deal me in.”

He sat. The cuffs clinked against the stone. Nobody commented because everybody in this yard had cuffs and commenting on cuffs in prison was like commenting on shoes at a shoe store. Kael’s cuffs would be taken off once they were back inside. They didn’t know that part.

Within four minutes, the table had rearranged itself around the understanding that the new guy was a problem. Kael read tells the way Brennan read magical signatures: instinctively, ruthlessly, and without bothering to explain how he knew what he knew. The man across from him scratched his ear before bluffing. The man to his left held cards tighter when he had something good. The man to his right breathed through his mouth when he was calculating and through his nose when he had given up.

Kael exploited all three simultaneously and looked bored doing it.

Terrick had been undefeated in this yard for four months. His reign lasted exactly ten minutes past Kael Ashenvale’s arrival. Dynasties are fragile.

”That’s not possible,” the man who had just lost his dessert said, staring at the cards on the stone like they had personally betrayed him. ”You’ve been here for an hour. How are you this good?”

”Natural talent. Emotional damage. But I won’t take your custard.”

The relief on Terrick’s face was so complete it should have come with a receipt.

”What do you want then?”

”Information,” Kael replied. ”To start with. Have you heard of the term Noxari?”

The card table went silent.

”I’ll take that as a yes,” Kael stated.

The information he gathered over the next twenty minutes was worth more than every custard in this facility. He would later determine that prison was the second-best intelligence-gathering venue he had ever used.

Across the yard, a guard approached Guinevere’s bench. His stride was different from the other guards. Softer. The walk of a man who had been on rotation all morning and had watched this particular inmate wave at children, compliment infrastructure, and apologize to vegetation, and had arrived at the private conclusion that this woman did not belong in this facility and the least he could do was make her stay tolerable.

He held out a book.

Guinevere looked at it. Looked at the guard. Her eyes went wide in a way that Kael recognized from across the yard because that was the face she made when someone gave her something small and kind and the smallness of the kindness made it bigger than anything expensive could have been.

”For me?”

The guard gave a nod. ”New to the communal library. Came in this morning.”

The beam that crossed her face could have powered the yard’s glowing trellises for a week. The smile was warm and full and aimed at the guard with the gratitude of a woman who had been handed a diamond and the diamond was bound in leather and had pages.

”Thank you so much, Roger. You’ve been so gracious during my stay. I want you to know that your kindness has made a meaningful difference in my rehabilitation journey.”

Roger the guard blinked once. The blink of a man who had never been thanked for handing an inmate a book and was processing the experience in real time. He gave a short nod, turned, and walked away at a pace that was slightly faster than his approach because the warmth of that smile had done something to his composure that he needed distance to recover from.

Guinevere sat on the bench, opened the book, and ran her fingers across the first page.

”Kael,” she called across the yard. ”Roger gave me Luminari reading material.”

Kael glanced up from his freshly dealt hand, clocked the book, clocked the happiness radiating off her through their connection, and returned to the business of ruining four grown men at cards.

”I see that, honey. Tell Roger I said thanks.” He laid down three cards that made the man across from him put his head in his hands. ”Try Chapter one. Let me know if it’s any good.”

She opened to the first page and started reading.

The story was about a merchant who sailed to the edge of the world and found a mountain that sang.

She read silently for three pages. Her lips moved with the words the way lips move when a person is reading something they love and their body wants to participate even though their voice has not been invited.

A shadow fell across the bench.

The old man with the frying pan, the one from the bar, the one who had been arrested for obstruction and was remodeling his kitchen when he got out, lowered himself to the ground in front of her with the creaking deliberation of a man whose knees had opinions about sitting on stone and whose curiosity overruled them.

He did not say anything. He sat cross-legged, facing her, hands on his knees, looking up at the book with the patient expectation of a man who had shown up early to a show and was willing to wait for it to start.
