Unexpected Second Chance at Love

The night grew deeper as Yue Ling and Lu Tian continued talking in the living room of the Han Mansion.

Outside, the cold winter wind swept through the quiet estate, occasionally brushing against the tall windows. The moon hung high above the mansion, casting a pale glow across the gardens that had long since fallen silent.

Inside, however, the atmosphere was warm.

The two sat close together on the cream-colored sofa, sharing stories that had remained untold throughout their time together.

They spoke of their childhoods and the people they had known. The moments that had shaped them into who they were today.

Sometimes, their conversations were filled with laughter. Other times, their voices grew quiet as they touched upon memories neither had revisited in years.

Every so often, they drifted into a comfortable silence.

There was no awkwardness between them, nor did either feel the need to fill every passing moment with words.

Lu Tian would occasionally brush his thumb across Yue Ling’s hand, while she rested her head against his shoulder, listening to the steady rhythm of his breathing.

It was a simple kind of peace.

One that neither had experienced often in their lives.

For Yue Ling, the mansion no longer felt quite as empty as it had when they first arrived.

The memories were still there.

The sadness had not disappeared.

But sitting beside Lu Tian, she realized that the silence no longer felt as lonely.

Eventually, she glanced toward the antique clock hanging above the fireplace.

It was getting late.

She straightened and slowly rose from the sofa.

Lu Tian lifted his gaze toward her.

Yue Ling turned around and extended her hand.

”Let’s go to sleep.”

Lu Tian looked at her outstretched hand before arching an eyebrow.

”Where are we going?”

Yue Ling chuckled.

”My room.”

His brows lifted higher.

”Your room?”

She nodded.

”Where else?”

Lu Tian leaned back against the sofa, studying her with a suspicious expression.

”My love, I don’t know if that’s a good idea.”

Yue Ling blinked.

”What isn’t?”

He glanced around the living room before returning his gaze to her.

”This is your family home.”

”And?”

”I don’t think it would be appropriate for me to sleep in your room.”

For a moment, Yue Ling simply stared at him.

Then she burst into laughter.

Lu Tian watched her with an innocent expression, although the faint amusement in his eyes betrayed him.

”Tian,” she said between laughs, ”don’t you think it’s a little too late to worry about that?”

He tilted his head.

”Is it?”

She gave him a look.

”We’re getting married.”

”That doesn’t mean I should forget my manners.”

Yue Ling shook her head helplessly.

”Since when have you been so concerned about that?”

”Since my wife invited me into her childhood bedroom.”

She laughed again.

”You’re unbelievable.”

Lu Tian finally smiled.

He reached for her outstretched hand and brought it to his lips.

”Fortunately, I’m also a man who always listens to his wife.”

He rose from the sofa.

”So, lead the way, Mrs. Lu.”

Yue Ling rolled her eyes, but the smile on her face remained.

Together, they retrieved their overnight bags from the entrance hall and made their way toward the grand staircase.

Yue Ling took the lead.

Her fingers rested lightly against the polished wooden banister as she began climbing the steps.

Lu Tian followed closely behind, carrying both bags despite her earlier insistence that she could manage her own.

The staircase curved gracefully toward the second floor, its walls decorated with framed paintings and photographs.

As Yue Ling climbed, her footsteps gradually slowed.

Her gaze drifted toward the familiar hallway above.

She remembered running up these very stairs as a child.

Sometimes, her mother would call after her, always warning her not to run.

Other times, her father would stand at the bottom and pretend he could not catch her, making her laugh as she hurried toward her room.

Her paternal grandmother had often waited upstairs with freshly washed clothes, while her grandfather would remind her to finish her homework before playing.

Those ordinary moments had once seemed endless.

She had never imagined there would come a day when she would return to this house and find none of them waiting.

A faint sadness passed through her eyes.

No matter how many years went by, she would always miss them.

She would miss her mother’s voice.

Her father’s laughter.

Her grandmother’s gentle affection.

And her grandfather’s stern lectures that had always concealed his love for her.

Time had taught her how to live with their absence.

But it had never taught her how to stop missing them.

A warm hand gently settled against the small of her back.

Yue Ling turned her head.

Lu Tian was looking at her.

He did not ask whether she was alright.

He did not need to.

Instead, he offered her a small smile.

She returned it.

For years, she had walked through these memories alone.

Shin had been there for her, but she tried to stay away from here because her grief still lingered.

Now, she had someone beside her.

Someone who would not ask her to forget the past simply because remembering it sometimes hurt.

Yue Ling reached for his hand.

Lu Tian immediately intertwined their fingers.

Together, they continued upstairs.

Her bedroom was located near the end of the second-floor hallway.

When they reached the familiar white door, Yue Ling stopped.

For a moment, she simply looked at it.

Then she reached for the handle and gently pushed it open.

The lights illuminated the room.

Yue Ling stepped inside.

A faint smile appeared on her lips.

Everything was exactly as she remembered.

The room was like a time capsule, preserving the years when she had still been a young girl living beneath her parents’ roof.

Soft cream walls surrounded the spacious bedroom, complemented by delicate floral patterns and pale furnishings.

A writing desk stood near the window, its surface neatly arranged with old notebooks, a small lamp, and several decorative ornaments.

Books lined the shelves beside it.

A few framed photographs remained on the dresser, while pale curtains hung beside the tall windows overlooking the gardens.

And scattered among the shelves were stuffed animals.

Some were small.

Others were large enough that they occupied entire sections of the shelves.

Yue Ling’s gaze softened.

Most had been gifts from her parents.

A few had been given to her by her paternal grandparents.

Although she had grown older, she had never found the heart to throw them away.

They were reminders of birthdays, holidays, and ordinary afternoons when someone had returned home carrying a surprise for her.

She walked toward one of the shelves and gently touched the ear of a stuffed rabbit.

A faint memory surfaced.

Her father had brought it home after returning from a business trip.

She remembered running toward him the moment he stepped through the door.

He had laughed and lifted her into his arms before presenting the rabbit as though it were the most precious treasure in the world.

Yue Ling smiled to herself.

Behind her, Lu Tian stepped into the room.

He set their overnight bags beside the dresser then slowly looked around.

For the first time, he was seeing the room where his wife had spent much of her childhood.

His gaze moved from the pale furnishings to the bookshelves, then toward the collection of stuffed animals.

The room was nothing like the one he had grown up in.

Even as a child, he had preferred darker colors and simple furnishings.

His bedroom had been practical.

Organized.

Almost severe.

There had been little room for decorations, much less an entire collection of stuffed toys.

Yue Ling’s room, on the other hand, was warm and inviting.

It reflected a girl who had once been surrounded by affection.

A girl who had enjoyed the simple pleasures of childhood before life forced her to grow up.

Lu Tian’s expression softened.

He could almost imagine a younger Yue Ling sitting at the desk, studying beneath the lamplight.

Or lying on the floor with her books scattered around her.

Perhaps she had spent rainy afternoons by the window, watching the droplets slide down the glass.

The thought brought a faint smile to his lips.

Then his gaze settled on the bed.

He stopped.

Blinking once, he looked at it again.

It was a twin-sized bed.

A perfectly ordinary bed for a young girl.

Unfortunately, it was considerably less suitable for a man of his height.

Lu Tian stared at it for several seconds.

Then he cleared his throat.

”I suppose the floor will do.”

Yue Ling turned toward him.

”What?”

He gestured toward the bed.

”I’ll sleep on the floor.”

She followed his gaze.

Then she laughed.

”Why? We can both sleep on the bed.”

Lu Tian slowly turned his head toward her.

His expression was one of genuine disbelief.

”My love, have you looked at that bed?”

Yue Ling glanced at it.

”Of course.”

”It’s not big enough for both of us.”

She smiled and walked over to sit on the edge.

Then she stretched both arms across the mattress as though measuring its width.

”See? It’s wide enough.”

Lu Tian stared at her demonstration.

His lips pressed into a thin line.

He looked at the bed.

Then at her outstretched arms.

Finally, he raised one hand and pinched the space between his brows.

”Yue Ling.”

”Hmm?”

”My legs would practically be hanging off the edge.”

She looked down at the mattress.

Then she glanced at his long legs.

After a moment of consideration, she nodded solemnly.

”I suppose you’re right.”

Lu Tian lowered his hand.

At least she understood.

Or so he thought.

Yue Ling leaned back, supporting herself with both hands.

A regretful sigh escaped her lips.

”What a shame.”

He narrowed his eyes.

”What is?”

She looked at the bed.

”I suppose we won’t be able to sleep close to each other tonight.”

Lu Tian went still.

Yue Ling lowered her gaze, hiding the mischievous smile threatening to appear.

”Well, I guess we’ll just have to sleep separately.”

Silence.

Then she heard his footsteps.

A shadow fell across her.

Yue Ling slowly lifted her head.

Lu Tian stood directly in front of her. His lips curved into a dangerous smile.

He leaned down.

”Mrs. Lu.”

”Yes?”

”When I said the floor would do...”

He lowered himself closer until their faces were only inches apart.

”I never said I intended to sleep there alone.”

Yue Ling blinked.

Before she could respond, he pressed a gentle kiss against her forehead.

”You’re sleeping with me.”

Yue Ling immediately covered her mouth with one hand.

Her eyes widened in exaggerated shock.

”Lu Tian!”

He raised an eyebrow.

”Yes, my love?”

”How can you say something so shameless?”

She glanced dramatically around the room, as though checking whether anyone had overheard them.

”We’re not married yet!”

Lu Tian stared at her.

Then he laughed.

It was a deep, genuine laugh that filled the quiet bedroom.

He straightened and placed both hands on his hips.

”Too late.”

Yue Ling lowered her hand.

He glanced at the bed before looking back at her.

”I suppose we’ll have to make do with this tiny bed.”

She burst into laughter.

”You changed your mind rather quickly.”

”Desperate circumstances require difficult sacrifices.”

”Oh, really?”

”Naturally.”

Yue Ling playfully struck his arm.

”Go wash up.”

Lu Tian caught her hand and kissed her knuckles.

”As you wish, my queen.”

She shook her head, still laughing.

He retrieved his overnight bag and headed toward the attached bathroom.

Just before disappearing inside, he glanced back at the bed.

Then at his wife.

”Don’t fall asleep without me.”

Yue Ling waved him away.

”Go.”

He chuckled and closed the bathroom door behind him.

A moment later, the sound of running water filled the room.

Yue Ling remained seated on the bed for a little while.

The smile on her face slowly softened.

She glanced toward the bathroom.

When she was certain Lu Tian had begun showering, she rose and walked toward the door leading to her walk-in closet.

She opened it.

The lights illuminated rows of neatly arranged clothing, shelves, and drawers.

Much of what remained belonged to her younger years.

Some dresses were far too small for her now.

Others were styles she would never wear again.

Yet she had never asked anyone to remove them.

Like the rest of the mansion, the closet held memories she was unwilling to part with.

Yue Ling stepped inside.

Her fingers brushed lightly against the hanging clothes as she walked toward the back.

She stopped before a tall shelving unit.

For a moment, she studied the upper shelves.

Then she rose onto her tiptoes and reached toward the farthest corner.

Her fingertips searched behind several storage boxes.

Finally, they touched something familiar.

She carefully pulled it forward.

A small pink shoebox.

Its corners were slightly worn, and the once-bright color had faded with age.

The exterior was decorated with childish stickers.

Stars.

Hearts.

Tiny flowers.

And a few cartoon animals that had begun peeling away from the cardboard.

Yue Ling stared at it.

A faint smile touched her lips.

She remembered decorating the box when she was little.

Back when her greatest concerns had been finishing her homework and deciding which toy to bring to bed.

Back when the world had seemed bright and endless.

Before she understood what it meant to lose someone forever.

She held the box in one hand and gently traced her fingers across its lid.

For a long moment, she remained motionless.

Then she carried it to the dresser and carefully set it down.

She lifted the lid.

Inside lay a collection of small treasures.

Objects that would have appeared ordinary to anyone else.

But to her, they were priceless.

There was a snow globe.

A necklace.

Several old amusement park tickets, their colors faded from years of storage.

Small glass jars filled with sand she had collected during trips to the beach with her father.

Seashells she had gathered with her mother.

Dried flowers she had once planted with her paternal grandmother.

And an old lighter that had belonged to her paternal grandfather.

Yue Ling gently touched the lighter.

She remembered seeing him use it when she was little.

He had always kept it close, and she had once asked why he never replaced it with something newer.

He had merely smiled and told her that some things became more valuable with age.

At the time, she had not understood.

Now she did.

Her gaze moved over the other keepsakes.

Each item carried a memory.

A voice.

A smile.

A moment she could never experience again.

Then her eyes settled on a tiny navy velvet box tucked near the bottom.

Yue Ling’s hand stopped.

She stared at it.

For several seconds, she did not move.

The velvet had faded slightly, but the box remained carefully preserved.

Her fingers hovered above it.

Then, slowly, she picked it up.

It rested lightly in her palm.

She lowered her gaze, her expression becoming unreadable as memories came to her.

”Yue Ling?”

Lu Tian’s voice sounded from the closet entrance.

She froze for a brief second.

Then she turned.

He stood in the doorway wearing his sleepwear, a towel draped over his damp hair.

One hand held the towel as he dried his hair.

His gaze moved from her face to the small velvet box in her hand.

Then back to her.

”Are you alright?”

Yue Ling smiled faintly.

It seemed that question had followed her throughout the entire day.

From the cemetery to the beach.

From the entrance of the mansion to the living room.

And now, even here.

She nodded.

”I am.”

Lu Tian studied her for a moment.

His eyes briefly shifted toward the open shoebox on the dresser.

He could see several old keepsakes inside.

He understood immediately that they were personal belongings she had preserved from her childhood.

But he did not ask.

If she wanted to tell him about them, she would.

Yue Ling looked down at the navy velvet box.

Then she closed her fingers gently around it.

With her free hand, she put the lid on the shoebox.

Lu Tian watched quietly as she returned the box to its place on the upper shelf.

She made sure it was safely tucked away before stepping out of the closet.

Lu Tian moved aside to let her pass.

His gaze followed her as she walked toward their overnight bags.

Yue Ling opened hers and carefully placed the velvet box inside.

Then she reached for her change of clothes.

She could feel his eyes on her.

A smile tugged at her lips.

Without looking up, she said, ”No peeking.”

Lu Tian arched an eyebrow.

”Peeking?”

She turned toward him.

”Yes, Mr. Lu. No peeking inside my bag.”

He glanced at the bag.

Then at her.

”Should I be concerned?”

Yue Ling laughed.

”Why would you be?”

”You’re hiding something from me.”

”Am I?”

His eyes narrowed slightly.

She smiled innocently.

Lu Tian folded the towel over his shoulder.

”My love, you do realize that telling someone not to look only makes them more curious.”

”Then practice some self-control.”

He gave her a helpless look.

Yue Ling chuckled.

”I’ll tell you when we get home.”

His expression softened.

”Promise?”

”Promise.”

She gathered her clothes and headed toward the bathroom.

Just before closing the door, she glanced back.

”And don’t even think about using your interrogation skills on me.”

Lu Tian laughed.

”Wouldn’t dream of it.”

”Good.”

The bathroom door closed.

A moment later, the shower began running.

Lu Tian remained standing beside the dresser.

His gaze drifted toward her overnight bag.

More precisely, toward the place where she had hidden the velvet box.

He was curious.

Very curious.

If he wanted to, he could easily open the bag and discover what she was keeping from him.

But he had no intention of doing so.

His wife had asked him not to look.

And despite his reputation for being an unreasonable man, there were certain requests he would never disregard.

Especially when they came from her.

Lu Tian shook his head with a quiet chuckle.

”Such a mysterious wife.”

He set the towel aside and walked toward the bed.

After another doubtful glance at its size, he sat on the edge and retrieved his phone.

Several work messages awaited his attention.

He began reviewing them, occasionally responding to matters that required his approval.

However, his attention wandered more than once.

His gaze would drift toward the closet.

Then toward the overnight bag.

Finally, he forced himself to concentrate on his work.

Whatever Yue Ling was keeping inside that velvet box, she would tell him when she was ready.

And he was willing to wait.
