Unexpected Second Chance at Love

By the time the last traces of daylight disappeared beyond the mountains, Yue Ling and Lu Tian had arrived at the Han Mansion.

The black car rolled through the wrought-iron gates and followed the winding driveway toward the two-story mansion. Its headlights swept across the neatly trimmed hedges and stone pathway before coming to a stop near the front entrance.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

Yue Ling sat quietly in the passenger seat, her bluish-green eyes fixed on the familiar building beyond the windshield.

The last time she came here was when she learned about her yeye’s failing health.

When she finally opened the door and stepped outside, a gust of cold wind brushed against her face, carrying the faint scent of winter through the quiet estate.

She barely noticed the chill.

Her gaze slowly traveled upward, taking in the mansion standing beneath the pale moonlight.

The French-style residence was as beautiful as she remembered. Its white-colored stone walls, tall arched windows, and wrought-iron balconies had remained unchanged throughout the years. Two symmetrical wings extended from the center of the building, while the steep slate roof cast dark shadows over the second floor.

Under the moonlight, the mansion appeared almost untouched by time.

Yet the silence surrounding it told a different story.

There had once been laughter behind those windows.

Warm lights had once illuminated every room, and familiar voices had filled the hallways from morning until night.

Now, the mansion stood quietly beneath the stars, guarding memories that belonged to a family no longer there.

Yue Ling drew in a slow breath.

Over the years, many people had advised her to sell the property.

Some believed it was impractical to maintain such a large estate since she was moving from City Z. Others thought keeping it would only prolong her grief.

She had listened to their suggestions, but her answer had always remained the same.

No.

She would never sell it.

Not for any amount of money.

This mansion was more than a house. It was the home where she had taken her first steps, celebrated birthdays, and spent countless evenings surrounded by the people who loved her.

It was where her mother had held her when she cried, where her father had carried her on his shoulders, and where her paternal grandparents had spoiled her with affection.

Every room held a piece of them.

Every corner carried a memory.

Even if the people she loved could never return, she would never willingly part with the last home that had held them all together.

Behind her, the trunk closed with a quiet thud.

Lu Tian had retrieved their overnight bags and as he walked to her, he noticed his wife’s motionless figure.

She stood at the foot of the entrance steps, looking up at the mansion with an expression he could not quite describe.

There was longing in her eyes.

And beneath it, a sadness she was trying very hard to conceal.

His footsteps slowed.

He approached her quietly and reached for her hand.

”Are you alright?”

Yue Ling turned toward him.

For a brief moment, she appeared surprised, as though she had forgotten he was standing beside her.

Then her lips curved into a faint smile.

”I am.”

Lu Tian studied her face.

He knew his wife well enough to recognize the difference between her genuine smiles and the ones she offered when she wanted to reassure someone.

This was the latter.

He could see the emotions she was holding back, but he did not question her.

There were some things that could not be eased simply by asking someone to speak about them.

Instead, he gently squeezed her hand.

”We can stay somewhere else tonight and come back in the morning.”

His voice was calm, leaving the decision entirely to her.

Yue Ling glanced back at the mansion.

She understood what he was offering.

An opportunity to leave before the memories became too overwhelming.

But she shook her head.

”No. I want to stay here.”

Lu Tian searched her eyes one last time before nodding.

”Alright.”

A small smile touched her lips.

Without another word, she tightened her fingers around his hand and led him up the stone steps.

At the entrance, she stood before the facial recognition scanner beside the door.

A soft electronic chime sounded.

The scanner recognized her face, and the lock disengaged with a quiet click.

Yue Ling pushed open the door.

The lights automatically illuminated the entrance hall the moment they stepped inside.

Warm golden light spilled across the polished marble floor, revealing the grand staircase, the elegant wall moldings, and the crystal chandelier hanging above the foyer.

Everything was exactly as she remembered.

Yue Ling stopped.

Her hand slowly loosened around Lu Tian’s.

She looked around the entrance hall, taking in the familiar surroundings before gently closing her eyes.

And for one fleeting moment, time seemed to turn backward.

She could hear the quick patter of little feet racing across the marble floor.

A child’s laughter echoed through the hall.

Her laughter.

”Yue Ling! Slow down!”

Her mother’s voice followed from behind, stern but filled with affection.

The little girl only laughed harder, darting around the corner as her mother hurried after her.

From the living room came her father’s deep, amused laughter.

”Let her play, An Ling. She’s only a child.”

”You’re the reason she never listens!”

His laughter grew louder.

Then came her grandmother’s gentle chuckle and her grandfather’s voice, pretending to scold her father for encouraging his granddaughter’s mischief.

The memory shifted.

She was older now, sitting at a desk with a textbook open before her.

Her grandfather stood beside her, his expression unusually serious.

”Yue Ling, you must study hard. Knowledge is something no one can ever take away from you.”

She remembered looking up at him and nodding obediently.

Then another memory surfaced.

Her grandmother brushing her hair before bedtime.

Her mother kissing her forehead.

Her father promising to take her somewhere special the following morning.

The sound of laughter.

The warmth of their embraces.

The feeling of being loved without reservation.

And then—

Silence.

The voices faded.

The footsteps disappeared.

The warmth of those memories gave way to the stillness of the empty mansion.

”Yue Ling.”

A familiar deep voice reached her.

Her eyelids fluttered open.

Lu Tian stood beside her, his dark eyes filled with concern.

She looked at him for a moment before glancing around the entrance hall.

The house was quiet again.

There was no little girl running across the floor.

No mother chasing after her.

No father laughing from the living room.

No grandparents waiting to welcome her home.

Only the two of them stood beneath the chandelier.

Yue Ling swallowed the tightness in her throat.

”I’m alright,” she whispered.

She paused, then added softly, ”I just missed them.”

Lu Tian’s heart tightened.

He had noticed the change in her expression the moment she closed her eyes.

For an instant, he had wanted nothing more than to take her away from this place.

He wanted to shield her from the sadness that seemed to linger within these walls.

He wanted her to smile without having to hide the pain behind it.

But he knew those wishes were selfish.

This mansion held memories she treasured, and those memories would always come with grief.

He could not erase one without taking away the other.

Nor would he ever ask her to forget the people who had shaped her into the woman she was today.

He had promised to walk through life with her.

Not only through the moments filled with happiness, but through the painful ones as well.

If she wanted to remember, he would remember with her.

If she wanted to grieve, he would remain beside her.

And if all she needed was someone to hold her in silence, he would gladly be that person.

Lu Tian placed their overnight bags on a nearby console table.

Then he stepped forward and drew her into his arms.

”You’re not alone,” he murmured against her hair. ”I’m here with you.”

Yue Ling closed her eyes.

Her arms slowly wrapped around his waist, and she rested her cheek against his chest.

The familiar warmth of his embrace eased the ache in her heart.

She listened to his steady heartbeat, allowing herself to find comfort in the simple fact that he was there.

”Thank you.”

Lu Tian lowered his chin to the top of her head.

He said nothing.

There was no need.

They remained in each other’s arms for a long moment, surrounded by the quiet mansion.

Eventually, Yue Ling pulled back.

She looked up at him, her expression considerably softer.

”Can you turn on the heater? The thermostat is down the hall, past the staircase.”

Lu Tian nodded.

”I’m going to make us something warm to drink,” she continued.

His brows drew together.

Something warm to drink?

He glanced toward the hallway leading to the kitchen.

The mansion had been unoccupied for quite some time. Although the estate was regularly maintained, he doubted there would be anything fresh enough for them to consume.

Before he could voice his concern, Yue Ling seemed to read his thoughts.

She opened her handbag and rummaged through its contents.

A moment later, she pulled out a small, unopened package of tea.

She held it up triumphantly.

”Hana prepared it for us.”

Lu Tian stared at the package then at his wife.

A helpless smile tugged at the corner of his lips.

”We should send her a gift to show our appreciation, then.”

With that, she turned and headed toward the kitchen.

Lu Tian watched her disappear down the hallway. He shook his head with quiet amusement before turning toward the staircase.

Despite having visited the mansion only once before, he still remembered its general layout.

His previous visit had been anything but leisurely.

At the time, he had been searching for Yue Ling after she disappeared upon learning about Grandfather Ji’s illness.

He had barely paid attention to the furnishings or decorations.

His only concern had been finding his wife.

Even so, his memory was sharp enough that he located the thermostat without difficulty.

After adjusting the temperature, he waited until he heard the heating system begin to operate.

Satisfied, he turned toward the kitchen.

However, as he passed the living room, something caught his attention.

He stopped.

The large room was illuminated by the soft glow of the wall lights.

Every piece of furniture had been carefully covered with white protective cloths.

The sofas, armchairs, and tables stood beneath their coverings, giving the room an almost ghostly appearance.

It was a strange sight.

Everything had been preserved, yet nothing appeared lived in.

His gaze moved toward the far wall.

There, beneath an ornate mantel, stood a large marble fireplace.

Unlike the furniture, the mantel had been left uncovered.

Several framed photographs were arranged neatly across its surface.

Lu Tian hesitated before approaching.

As he drew closer, he realized that nearly every photograph featured the same person.

Yue Ling.

He picked up the first frame.

It was a photograph of her as a baby.

She sat on a soft blanket, her tiny hands reaching toward something beyond the camera.

Her round cheeks were flushed pink, and her bright eyes sparkled with curiosity.

A wide, toothless smile stretched across her face.

Lu Tian’s expression softened.

He set the frame down and moved to the next photograph.

Yue Ling was slightly older.

Her hair had been tied into two small ponytails, and she wore a white dress with a ribbon around her waist.

She stood between her parents, holding their hands.

All three were smiling.

Another photograph showed her with her parents and paternal grandparents.

In one, she sat on her grandfather’s lap while her grandmother stood beside them.

There was a photograph of her with both her grandfathers, each holding one of her hands.

And beside it was another picture of Yue Ling standing next to her paternal grandfather.

Lu Tian continued studying the photographs.

There were pictures from birthdays, family outings, and ordinary days.

Photos that had somehow become precious enough to preserve.

As his gaze traveled from one frame to another, he noticed something.

Her smile.

In the earliest photographs, Yue Ling smiled without restraint.

Her eyes curved into crescents, and her happiness seemed to radiate from every expression.

But as she grew older, something gradually changed.

Her smiles became smaller.

More reserved.

The carefree little girl who once laughed so brightly slowly disappeared behind a composed expression.

By the time she reached her teenage years, the difference was unmistakable.

Lu Tian felt a dull ache settle in his chest.

He knew his wife had endured more than most people could imagine.

He knew she had lost people she loved long before she was old enough to understand why life could be so cruel.

Yet seeing those changes captured in photographs was different from hearing about them.

He could almost trace the years in which happiness had slowly given way to grief.

His gaze returned to the photograph of the little girl holding both her parents’ hands.

Something about her expression tugged at a distant memory.

The shape of her eyes.

The familiar curve of her smile.

The way she tilted her head slightly toward the camera.

Lu Tian went still.

Then the conversation with Grandfather Ji suddenly resurfaced in his mind.

The old man’s words, which he had not fully understood at the time, echoed through his thoughts.

Then, without warning, a forgotten memory emerged.

It was many years ago.

He was still a young boy.

A little girl walked several steps ahead of him along a garden pathway, her small figure almost disappearing behind the flowering shrubs.

He remembered following her.

Not because anyone had asked him to.

But because he wanted to.

She had been so small.

So delicate that he had the strange feeling she might vanish if he looked away for even a moment.

He remembered her turning around to look at him.

Her bright eyes had been filled with curiosity.

”Why do you keep following me?”

The young Lu Tian had stared at her.

He had not known how to explain himself.

So he had simply answered, ”I’m going the same way.”

The little girl had laughed.

He remembered that laugh.

Clear and sweet.

A sound that had stayed with him long after the moment passed, even when the memory itself became buried beneath the years.

Another fragment surfaced.

However, this one was different.

She was older but she no longer wore the bright smile he remembered.

The carefree laughter that once filled his days had fallen silent.

In its place was a quiet, haunting sadness, as though she had lost her way in a world that had taken too much from her.

He quietly followed behind her, his small hands clenched at his sides.

He had made a promise.

’I’ll make you smile again.’

At the time, he had meant every word.

If there was anything he could do to bring that smile back to her face, he would do it without hesitation.

No matter how small or insignificant the gesture, seeing her genuinely happy again was all that mattered to him.

He wanted to grow up and become someone she could always depend on.

But then, one day, she stopped appearing.

He remembered visiting the Ji Mansion and looking around for her.

He had searched the garden.

The hallways.

The places where he had seen her before.

But she was nowhere to be found.

Eventually, he approached Grandfather Ji.

”Grandfather Ji, when is she coming back?”

The old man had looked at him for a long moment.

There was sadness in his eyes.

”She might not come back for a long time, Tian.”

The young boy frowned.

”How long?”

Grandfather Ji had not answered. He had merely patted the boy’s head.

At the time, Lu Tian had refused to believe him.

Surely, she would return.

She had always been there before.

So he waited.

Every time he visited the Ji Mansion for training, he looked for her.

Whenever footsteps sounded in the hallway, he turned his head.

Whenever a car arrived at the entrance, he wondered whether she had finally come back.

Days passed.

Then weeks.

Then months.

But the little girl never returned.

Eventually, the young boy made another promise.

’If she won’t come back, I’ll find her myself.’

He had been certain of it.

One day, he would find her.

No matter how far away she was.

But as the years passed, his childhood promises slowly faded into distant memories.

He grew older, and somewhere along the way, he forgot the little girl he had once vowed to find and protect.

Lu Tian stared at the photograph in his hand. His fingers tightened slightly around the frame.

The space between his brows creased deeply.

How?

How could he have forgotten?

The little girl he had followed through the garden.

The little girl he had promised to protect.

The little girl he had waited for, day after day, without understanding why she never returned.

She had been Yue Ling.

His Yue Ling.

For years, those memories had remained buried somewhere in the distant corners of his mind.

Time had passed.

He had grown older.

His responsibilities had multiplied, and the innocent promises of childhood had gradually faded beneath the weight of adulthood.

Yet the promises had once meant everything to him.

He had wanted to find her.

And somehow, after all those years, fate had brought her back into his life.

Lu Tian lowered his gaze.

A complicated emotion swept through him.

He had found her.

He had fallen in love with her.

He was going to marry her.

But he had not recognized the little girl he had once desperately wanted to protect.

And while he had forgotten, she had endured so much without him.

The thought made his chest tighten.

”Tian?”

A soft voice sounded behind him.

Lu Tian did not move.

Yue Ling had returned from the kitchen to check on him.

She had intended to remove the protective sheets from the furniture so they could sit comfortably while drinking their tea.

However, upon entering the living room, she noticed him standing motionless beside the fireplace.

At first, she thought he was simply looking at the family photographs.

But something felt wrong.

Usually, Lu Tian would turn toward her the moment he heard her footsteps.

His awareness of his surroundings was exceptionally sharp, even when he appeared distracted.

Yet she had walked into the room and called his name without receiving a response.

Her brows drew together.

”Tian?”

This time, he turned.

Yue Ling stopped.

The expression on his face immediately unsettled her.

His dark eyes were fixed on her with an intensity she could not understand.

There was something unfamiliar in his gaze.

Regret.

Disbelief.

And an emotion so deep that it made her heart skip a beat.

She took a step toward him.

”What is it? Are you not feeling well?”

Lu Tian stared at her.

For a long moment, he said nothing.

He simply looked at the woman standing before him.

Her bluish-green eyes.

Her delicate features.

The faint concern drawing her brows together.

He had looked at this face countless times.

He had memorized every expression, every smile, and every subtle change in her mood.

Yet only now did he see the little girl from his memories.

The one he had promised to find.

The one he had promised to protect.

Before Yue Ling could ask another question, Lu Tian set the photograph down.

Then he strode toward her.

”Tian—”

He stopped directly in front of her.

Both his hands rose to cradle her face.

Yue Ling blinked in surprise.

His palms were warm against her cheeks.

Despite the suddenness of his movements his touch was warm.

She looked up at him.

But before she could speak, he lowered his head and kissed her.

It was not like his usual kisses.

There was no teasing.

No playful affection.

Only an overwhelming urgency, as though he had suddenly realized how close he had come to losing something precious.

His lips pressed against hers with a desperation that caught her completely off guard.

For a heartbeat, Yue Ling stood frozen.

Then her hands instinctively rose to his chest.

She could feel his heart beating beneath her palms.

Fast.

Unsteady.

Almost as though he had been running.

Her confusion deepened.

What had happened?

What could have affected him so deeply in the short time they had been apart?

Just as she began to respond, Lu Tian slowly pulled away.

But he did not release her.

Instead, he rested his forehead against hers.

His eyes remained closed, and his hands continued to cradle her face as though he feared she might disappear if he let go.

Yue Ling gazed up at him.

”Tian?”

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

He drew in a slow, uneven breath.

She gently touched his wrist.

”What is it?”

For several seconds, he remained silent.

He could still see that little girl running through the garden.

He could still hear her laughter.

He could still remember the loneliness that surrounded her.

He remembered the promises he had made with all the certainty of a child who believed he could accomplish anything.

And he remembered waiting for someone who never returned.

But what hurt him most was realizing that the woman he loved had been the same little girl all along.

He had spent years searching for something he had eventually forgotten.

While she had spent those same years facing hardships he could never undo.

Lu Tian tightened his hold on her face just a little.

Then, with his forehead still resting against hers, he finally spoke.

”I’m sorry.”

Yue Ling’s brows furrowed.

”Sorry?”

His throat tightened.

He opened his eyes and looked into hers.

The regret in his gaze was unmistakable.

”I’m sorry it took me so long to find you.”
