The memory of what happened when he was fourteen remained as vivid as if it had occurred only yesterday. It was a night forever etched into his mind, one he would never forget.
It had been late at night.
The Lu residence was quiet, and most of the household had already retired.
Thirteen-year-old Lu Tian had been asleep when a faint sound outside his bedroom awakened him.
At first, he chalked it up to his brother getting up for a drink.
Then he heard another sound.
A soft metallic click.
The bedroom door opened.
Two unfamiliar men in masks stepped inside.
They moved cautiously, believing the boy in the bed was still asleep.
But Lu Tian had already opened his eyes.
The years of training under Grandfather Ji had sharpened his instincts.
Even at fourteen, he knew something was wrong.
One of the men approached the bed.
Before the intruder could reach for him, Lu Tian moved.
He threw off the blanket and struck the man’s arm, forcing him backward.
The second man lunged forward.
Lu Tian reacted without hesitation.
He twisted away, using the man’s momentum against him before delivering a sharp kick that sent him stumbling into the bedside table.
A lamp crashed to the floor.
The first man recovered and charged.
Lu Tian ducked beneath his outstretched arm and struck him hard enough to knock him off balance.
He had trained for years.
But this was the first time he understood that the techniques Grandfather Ji taught him were not merely exercises.
These men were not sparring partners.
They were not going to stop because he was hurt.
And if he made a mistake, he might not get another chance.
His heart pounded.
Yet his movements remained controlled.
Within moments, both intruders were on the floor.
One struggled to rise.
Lu Tian delivered another decisive blow, leaving the man motionless.
He turned toward the door.
Then he heard it.
A scream.
”Brother!”
Lu Han.
Lu Tian’s blood ran cold.
He rushed out of his bedroom.
The hallway was dimly lit, but he could hear struggling farther down.
Another cry echoed through the corridor.
”Brother! Help me!”
Lu Han’s terrified scream tore through the hallway.
Almost simultaneously, another scream erupted from his parents’ bedroom.
His mother.
Lu Tian’s head snapped toward the sound.
Through the open doorway, he caught sight of his father fighting two masked intruders. One lunged at him while the other attempted to seize his mother.
But his father refused to back down.
He deflected the incoming blow and positioned himself protectively in front of his wife, refusing to let either intruder reach her.
Then, amidst the chaos, his father’s eyes met his.
For a fleeting second, Lu Tian froze.
There was fear in those eyes, but beneath it lay something far more profound.
Trust.
His father knew what he was capable of.
Even in the face of danger, even with his family’s lives hanging in the balance, there was an unspoken certainty in his gaze.
He knew his son was not helpless.
He knew Lu Tian possessed the strength and courage to do what needed to be done.
”Tian! Protect your brother!”
Lu Tian was already moving.
He spun on his heel and sprinted toward Lu Han’s bedroom, his bare feet pounding against the floor.
There was no hesitation. No time for fear.
His younger brother was in danger.
And he would not let anyone take him.
When he reached Lu Han’s room, he saw a man dragging his younger brother toward the doorway.
Lu Han struggled desperately, his small hands gripping the man’s arm.
”Let me go!”
The intruder tightened his hold.
Lu Tian did not stop to think.
He charged forward.
Everything happened in a blur.
The man’s surprised expression.
Lu Han stumbling free.
The sound of a body striking the wall.
Lu Tian barely registered the pain in his own hands as he fought to keep the intruder away from his brother.
These men were twice his size and professionally trained.
However, all he knew was that Lu Han had been in danger.
And he would not allow anyone to take him.
By the time the household guards arrived, the intruder had been subdued.
Lu Han stood trembling near the doorway.
His face was pale.
Tears streamed down his cheeks.
Lu Tian turned toward him.
”Are you hurt?”
Lu Han shook his head.
Then he rushed forward and threw his arms around his older brother.
Lu Tian held him tightly.
”It’s alright,” he whispered.
”I’m here.”
He had been only fourteen.
But that night, something within him changed.
Later, after the intruders had been taken away and Lu Han was safely asleep with their mother, his father summoned him to the study.
Lu Tian remembered standing before the large wooden desk.
His hands were bruised.
A shallow cut marked the side of his face.
Yet his father had barely glanced at the injuries.
Instead, the older man studied him with an expression Lu Tian had never seen before.
There was pride.
But a heaviness also made the young boy uneasy.
”Sit down, Tian.”
Lu Tian obeyed.
For a long moment, his father remained silent.
He closed his eyes, drawing in a slow, unsteady breath as though struggling to keep the painful memory from overwhelming him.
”Your mother was having trouble sleeping. She kept telling me something didn’t feel right.”
His voice grew quieter.
”She was worried about you and Han. She said she needed to check on you both, just to put her mind at ease.”
He paused, his jaw tightening.
”But the moment she opened the door...”
His breath faltered.
”They were already there.”
He lowered his head, his voice thick with regret.
”I should have listened to her sooner. If I had, perhaps things would have been different.”
His fists clenched replaying the danger of that night.
Then he asked, ”Do you know why those men came tonight?”
Lu Tian shook his head.
”They wanted to take you or your brother.”
His father paused.
”And they were willing to hurt anyone who stood in their way.”
Lu Tian’s hands tightened into fists.
”Why?”
His father leaned back in his chair.
”Because of who we are.”
That night, Lu Tian learned the truth about his family.
He learned that the Lu family had spent decades carrying out dangerous assignments for the government.
That their influence extended far beyond the corporate world.
And that the power attached to their name came with enemies who would not hesitate to target innocent family members.
For the first time, he understood why Grandfather Ji had been training him since he was five years old.
He remembered the countless mornings spent practicing while other children his age played.
The bruises.
The exhaustion.
The strict lessons that never seemed to end.
He had resented those days.
There had been times when he wondered why he could not simply live like other children.
Why he had to learn how to fight when his classmates were learning new games.
Why he had to spend his weekends training instead of enjoying himself.
He had never understood.
Not until that night.
His father looked at him, a profound sadness lingering in his eyes.
For a long moment, he remained silent then his gaze shifted to the window in the study
”One day, these responsibilities will fall to the generation after me.”
His voice was quiet, heavy with resignation.
”I’ve spent years preparing you for that day. Teaching you to be strong, to endure pain, and to never let your emotions cloud your judgment.”
He paused, his fingers tightening slightly.
”But somewhere along the way, I forgot something important.”
Lu Tian watched as his father’s expression softened.
”You’re still just a little boy.”
His voice faltered.
”You should be laughing, playing, and enjoying your childhood. Instead, I’ve been teaching you how to survive a world you should never have had to face so young.”
A bitter smile touched his lips.
”I wanted to raise you into someone strong enough to carry everything I’ve built.”
He lowered his gaze.
”But I was so busy preparing you to become my successor that I forgot to let you be my son.”
The words settled heavily between them.
His father drew a shaky breath before looking at him again.
”And the hardest part is knowing that, despite everything, I still can’t spare you from what lies ahead.”
He turned his head to look at his son.
”I’m sorry, Tian.”
For the first time, Lu Tian saw something in his father’s eyes that he had never noticed before.
Not weakness.
But the quiet heartbreak of a man who wished he could give his son a different life.
Lu Tian remained silent.
”You are my eldest son. You will inherit more than Lu Corps.”
The older man’s voice grew solemn.
”And you must be prepared for what comes with it.”
Lu Tian lowered his gaze.
For a moment, he thought of Lu Han.
His younger brother was still frightened by what had happened.
He had cried until exhaustion finally overcame him.
Lu Tian remembered how tightly Lu Han had clung to his shirt.
He thought of the freedom his brother enjoyed.
The carefree days.
The laughter.
The ordinary childhood that Lu Tian had once envied.
Then he looked up at his father.
”What about Han?”
His father studied him.
”What about him?”
”Will he have to do this too?”
Silence filled the study.
Lu Tian’s expression grew determined.
”If someone has to do it, I’ll do it.”
His father said nothing.
Lu Tian continued.
”Let him live normally.”
He had spoken with the stubborn certainty of a fourteen-year-old boy.
But his decision was not made lightly.
He had seen what those men were capable of.
He knew the dangers were real.
And if someone in the family had to carry those responsibilities, he would rather it be him.
He did not want Lu Han to experience the fear he had seen in his brother’s eyes.
That night, Lu Tian accepted a future he had never asked for.
And from then on, he devoted himself to becoming strong enough that no one would dare threaten his family again.
The living room was quiet when Lu Tian finished recounting the memory.
Yue Ling had not interrupted him once.
Her hand remained in his.
She could almost picture the fourteen-year-old boy standing in his father’s study, accepting responsibilities that would have overwhelmed most adults.
He had been so young.
Far too young to understand the full weight of the decision he was making.
Yet he had chosen to shoulder those burdens to protect his younger brother.
Yue Ling looked at him with a tenderness she did not bother concealing.
Lu Tian gave her a faint smile.
”After that night, everything changed.”
He leaned back slightly.
”My training became more demanding. My father began preparing me for things most people never have to think about.”
He stared at the space in front of him.
”When Han found out, he was furious. Not because of the responsibilities I had inherited, but because I had been carrying them alone without telling him.”
Lu Tian paused, a faint smile touching his lips.
”He was hurt that I hadn’t trusted him enough to share the truth. I still remember him asking whether I even considered him my brother.”
His smile softened.
”After that, he started training harder than ever. He wanted to become strong enough to stand beside me, to share the dangers I faced instead of watching me shoulder everything alone.”
Lu Tian lowered his gaze.
”But there was only so much he could do. No matter how hard he trained, he couldn’t change the responsibilities that had already fallen on me.”
He paused.
”Still, he never stopped trying. And knowing my little brother was willing to put himself in danger just so I wouldn’t have to face everything alone...”
His voice softened.
”That meant more to me than he ever knew.”
His eyes darkened.
”But I learned that strength wasn’t enough. I needed influence. Resources. People I could trust.”
He paused.
”And I needed to become someone my enemies would think twice about crossing.”
Yue Ling listened quietly.
”At the time, I thought that if I became powerful enough, no one would dare hurt the people I cared about.”
He looked at her.
”Not Lu Han.”
His thumb brushed her knuckles.
”And not you.”
Yue Ling’s heart gave a painful squeeze.
Lu Tian lowered his gaze to their joined hands.
”That’s why I stopped searching.”
He exhaled slowly.
”I kept telling myself I’d find you once I was strong enough to protect you.”
His lips curved into a bitter smile.
”But the more responsibilities I took on, the further that promise slipped away.”
He paused.
”Eventually, I forgot.”
The words were quiet.
Yet the regret behind them was unmistakable.
Yue Ling moved closer.
”Tian...”
He raised his eyes.
”I promised to protect you,” he murmured. ”Then, when you stopped visiting Grandfather Ji, I promised I’d grow up and find you.”
His expression tightened.
”And I forgot both promises.”
An ache spread through Yue Ling’s chest.
She understood him.
Perhaps better than he realized.
She knew what it meant to be forced into a world where weakness could cost someone their life.
She knew what it meant to carry responsibilities that others could never understand.
And she knew how easily childhood dreams could disappear when survival became the only thing that mattered.
After all, she had her own secrets.
Her own darkness.
Her own burdens that she had never intended to place upon him.
But none of those things had changed the way he loved her.
Why should his past change the way she loved him?
Lu Tian looked away.
His gaze settled on the two cups of tea resting on the coffee table.
Steam continued rising from them in delicate curls.
For a moment, he watched the steam disappear into the air.
Then he spoke.
”I should have told you about my family’s involvement with the government before asking you to marry me.”
His voice was steady, but she could hear the uncertainty beneath it.
He continued without looking at her.
”I know what my family does isn’t something everyone can accept.”
His expression remained composed.
”But I hope it doesn’t change how you see me.”
Yue Ling went still.
She stared at him.
Of all the things he could have said, she had not expected that.
Lu Tian’s gaze remained fixed somewhere beyond the coffee table.
He had faced dangerous men without hesitation.
He had made decisions that affected countless lives.
He had stood before enemies who wanted nothing more than to see him destroyed.
Yet none of those moments had frightened him quite like this one.
Because this time, the decision was not his to make.
It was hers.
He loved Yue Ling more than anything.
She was his wife the moment he met her.
His heart.
The one person who made the world feel less cold.
The woman who had become his home.
He could endure almost anything, but the thought of losing her was something he could barely contemplate.
Still, if she believed his family’s responsibilities were too dangerous, he would understand.
She already carried enough burdens of her own.
He would never willingly force her to shoulder his as well.
And if she decided that being married to him came with a price she could no longer accept...
Lu Tian swallowed.
He would respect her decision.
No matter how much it hurt.
Yue Ling watched him in silence.
Then her brows slowly drew together.
She knew that expression.
She had seen it before.
The calm exterior.
The careful choice of words.
The way he looked away when something mattered too deeply for him to reveal.
Lu Tian could read her emotions with frightening accuracy.
But he seemed to forget that she could see through him just as easily.
She knew exactly what he was thinking.
And she did not like it.
Not one bit.
Yue Ling reached up.
Her palm gently settled against his cheek.
Lu Tian turned toward her at the touch.
She guided his face until his dark eyes met hers.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then she smiled.
”I’m not going anywhere.”
Lu Tian’s gaze flickered.
Yue Ling brushed her thumb across his cheek.
”Did you really think I’d leave you because of this?”
He remained silent.
She shook her head.
”Tian, look at me.”
His eyes stayed on hers.
”You’ve never once turned away from me because of the things I’ve done or the responsibilities I carry. Not when you found out who I am.”
Her voice softened.
”You’ve always been there when I needed you.”
She moved closer.
”So let me be there for you.”
Lu Tian’s expression changed.
The tension in his jaw slowly eased, though his eyes remained filled with emotion.
Yue Ling continued.
”Your family has secrets. So does mine.”
She smiled faintly.
”We both know our lives were never going to be ordinary.”
He let out a quiet breath.
”Yue Ling...”
She gently shook her head.
”I’m not finished.”
Lu Tian closed his mouth.
The faintest trace of amusement appeared in his eyes.
Yue Ling leaned closer until their foreheads touched.
”And besides...”
Her lips curved.
”I think it’s a little too late for me to back out now.”
Lu Tian’s brows lifted slightly.
”Too late?”
”Mhm.”
She closed her eyes.
Her thumb continued caressing his cheek.
”I’m too much in love with you to let you go.”
For a moment, Lu Tian forgot how to breathe.
The words were spoken so softly.
So naturally.
As though she were simply stating something that had never been in question.
But to him, they meant everything.
He had spent years learning how to protect himself from betrayal.
How to recognize danger before it arrived.
How to remain calm when the world around him descended into chaos.
Yet this woman could undo him with a few quiet words.
Lu Tian closed his eyes.
His hands rose to her waist, drawing her closer.
”Say that again.”
Yue Ling opened her eyes.
”Hmm?”
He looked at her.
”What you just said.”
A mischievous glint appeared in her bluish-green eyes.
”That it’s too late to back out?”
His expression darkened playfully.
”Yue Ling.”
She laughed.
The sound was soft and warm.
Lu Tian stared at her.
For one fleeting moment, he remembered the little girl in the photograph.
The one who used to laugh so freely.
The one he had wanted to protect.
His heart softened.
Yue Ling smiled and gently brushed her nose against his.
”I love you, Lu Tian.”
His arms tightened around her.
”Again.”
She gave him an amused look.
”You’re being greedy.”
”Only when it comes to you.”
Yue Ling shook her head, but she did not pull away.
Instead, she wrapped her arms around his neck.
”I love you.”
Lu Tian lowered his head and kissed her forehead.
Then the bridge of her nose.
Finally, he pressed a gentle kiss against her lips.
When he pulled away, he rested his forehead against hers once more.
”I love you too.”
His voice was low.
Filled with an emotion he no longer tried to conceal.
”More than you’ll ever know.”
Yue Ling smiled.
”I think I have a pretty good idea.”
Lu Tian chuckled.
For the first time since entering the mansion, the heaviness in his chest began to ease.
He had spent so much time regretting the promises he had forgotten that he had nearly overlooked what mattered most.
The little girl he had once searched for was no longer lost to him.
She was here.
In his arms.
She had grown into a woman who was more than capable of protecting herself.
A woman who had survived hardships that would have broken others.
A woman who had chosen to love him despite knowing that neither of their lives would ever be simple.
And somehow, after all those years, they had found their way back to each other.
Lu Tian gently tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.
”I made you two promises when we were children.”
Yue Ling looked at him.
”I know.”
He shook his head.
”No. I want you to hear them again.”
His expression grew serious.
”I promised I’d find you.”
His thumb brushed her cheek.
”And I promised I’d protect you.”
Yue Ling’s eyes softened.
”Tian...”
”I may have forgotten those promises once.”
He paused.
”But I won’t forget them again.”
She studied his face.
There was no hesitation in his eyes.
Only the same determination that had once belonged to a little boy who believed he could protect someone simply by growing stronger.
Yue Ling smiled.
”Then I’ll make you a promise too.”
Lu Tian raised an eyebrow.
”Oh?”
She nodded.
”I promise you won’t have to carry everything alone anymore.”
His expression stilled.
She placed her hand over his heart.
”Whatever comes next, we’ll face it together.”
Lu Tian covered her hand with his.
For a long moment, he simply looked at her.
Then he smiled.
A genuine smile.
One that softened the sharpness of his features and made him look younger.
”Together,” he repeated.
Yue Ling nodded.
”Together.”
Outside, the cold wind continued sweeping through the grounds of the Han Mansion.
The moon hung high above the roof, casting its pale light across the quiet gardens.
Inside, the living room had gradually grown warm.
The photographs on the fireplace mantel remained undisturbed, preserving the faces and memories of those who could no longer return.
For years, the mansion had stood as a reminder of everything Yue Ling had lost.
But tonight, it held something different.
Two people sat together beneath the watchful gaze of those old photographs, their hands intertwined as they quietly embraced a future neither could have imagined as children.
Lu Tian glanced toward the coffee table.
The tea had stopped steaming.
He looked at the cups, then at his wife.
”Your tea is getting cold.”
Yue Ling followed his gaze.
Her eyes widened slightly.
”Oh.”
She reached for a cup, but Lu Tian caught her hand.
She looked at him.
”What?”
He smiled.
”One more thing.”
Yue Ling sighed dramatically.
”What now, Mr. Lu?”
He leaned closer.
”Thank you.”
Her expression softened.
”For what?”
”For finding your way back to me.”
Yue Ling stared at him for a moment.
Then she smiled.
”I could say the same to you.”
Lu Tian gently kissed her hand.
Neither spoke for a while afterward.
There was no need to fill the silence.
This time, the silence wasn’t empty.
It was warm.
Comfortable.
And filled with the quiet certainty that neither of them would have to face the years ahead alone.
The promises of their childhood had been forgotten, but the love that brought them together had given those promises a second chance.
