Primordial Heir: Nine Stars

Nero woke before dawn. The room was still dark, the only light a pale sliver through the curtains. Khione lay beside him, her breathing slow and deep, her white hair spread across the pillow like moonlight on snow. He watched her for a moment, memorizing the softness of her face in sleep, the way her lips parted slightly, the gentle rise and fall of her chest.

He slipped out of bed without a sound. His clothes were folded on the chair where he had left them. He dressed quickly, pulling on his training gear, then paused at the door. He looked back at her. She had not stirred. Good. The consequences of being found in her room before morning would be dire—rumors, questions, the cold disapproval of the academy’s moral guardians. He did not care for himself, but for her, he would be careful.

The kitchenette was small, but he found everything he needed. Eggs, bread, a small pan. He worked in silence, the only sound the soft sizzle of butter melting. He made an omelet, fluffy and golden, folded it onto a plate. He added a small salad of fresh vegetables, a slice of toast, a glass of water. He set the plate on the small table beside her bed.

Then he wrote the note. Just a few words, in his simple hand:

Train hard today. I’ll see you tonight. – N

He folded the paper and placed it under the edge of the plate. Then he slipped out the door and into the gray morning.

The training hub was nearly empty at this hour. The attendant, a sleepy-eyed young man, barely looked up as Nero approached the counter.

”Pocket world,” Nero said. ”Medium grade. Aviary monsters. Full day.”

The attendant tapped his screen. ”That’ll be 150 credits.”

Nero paid without flinching. The credits were nearly gone now, but this was worth it. He needed to push his domain, to perfect the fire form, to grow stronger before the competition, before the organization struck again, before the storm.

The portal shimmered. He stepped through.

The world was a jagged maze of stone spires and deep chasms. A red sky churned above, heavy with clouds that moved too fast. The air was thin, cold, and filled with the screech of distant wings. Nero stood on a narrow ridge, the wind pulling at his clothes.

They came from above.

A flock of aviary monsters—creatures with leathery wings and sharp beaks, their bodies covered in scales the color of rust. Dozens of them, diving toward him, their claws extended. Nero did not draw his sword. He closed his eyes and reached for the fire.

His body changed.

Flame erupted from his skin, not wild, but controlled. His flesh turned to living light. His hair became a corona of embers. Three rings of fire spun into existence behind his back, their surfaces etched with ancient symbols. A sash of pure flame coiled around his waist. He opened his eyes, and they were red, burning, with lotus patterns blooming and fading in their depths.

He was not a man wielding fire. He was fire wearing the shape of a man.

The first monster struck. He did not dodge. He let it pass through him, and the creature shrieked as its claws dissolved in his flame-body. He reached up, his hand of fire closing around its throat, and squeezed. The monster crumbled to ash, and a wisp of silver light shot from the remains, sinking into Nero’s chest.

He felt it—a tiny pulse, a fraction of strength, a whisper of the creature’s essence. The fire within him hummed, pleased.

The others circled, wary now. Nero did not wait. He launched himself into the air, his flame wings spreading wide, and met them head-on.

His sword materialized in his hand—a blade of pure elemental fire, solid and searing. He swung, and a crescent of flame cut through three monsters at once. They exploded in bursts of ash and silver wisps, each one absorbed. He spun, his wings carrying him in a tight circle, and his sword traced a ring of fire that expanded outward, catching a dozen more.

The sky became a battlefield of light and shadow. Nero moved through it like a comet, his flame form flickering, adjusting, growing more natural with each kill. The monsters tried to surround him, to overwhelm him with numbers. He was too fast, too hot, too bright. He would appear in one place, strike, vanish, appear elsewhere.

Each kill brought a wisp. Each wisp sharpened his control. The fire form that had once drained him in moments now felt almost comfortable. His domain—the transformation—was evolving. He could feel the edges smoothing, the prana flow becoming more efficient.

A massive creature, larger than the others, its wings tattered and its eyes burning with hate, dove at him. It opened its beak, and a jet of compressed air shot toward him. Nero raised his hand, and a wall of flame deflected the blast. He stepped through the steam, his sword already swinging.

The blade cut through the creature’s neck, and its head tumbled into the chasm below. Its body followed, dissolving into wisps that streamed into Nero’s chest.

He landed on a stone spire, his flame form flickering. His chest rose and fell—not from exhaustion, but from the thrill of it. The sky was empty now. The monsters were gone. The red clouds churned, indifferent.

He had slaughtered them all. Every last one.

He looked at his hands, still wreathed in fire. The form held steady. The drain was minimal. He was closer now—closer to perfecting the domain, to making it his own.

The portal shimmered at the edge of the ridge. He had paid for a full day, but the work was done. He stepped through and returned to the academy.

The attendant blinked. ”You’re back early.”

”Got what I needed.”

Nero walked out, his body tired but his spirit alight. The fire within him hummed, satisfied.

He would train again tomorrow.
