Primordial Heir: Nine Stars

The sun was high now, the room bright. Outside, he could hear the sounds of the academy—footsteps, voices, the distant clang of training. Life continuing, ordinary and oblivious.

He rose from the couch and walked to the window, looking out at the academy grounds, at the cadets walking between classes, at the gardens and fountains and spires. Busy, doing their best to survive in this unforgivable world.

His phone buzzed again. Khione: The garden. One hour.

He typed back: I’ll be there.

He pocketed the phone and headed for the door.

°°°

Let’s rewind time a bit.

Khione set the phone aside and rose to her feet.

Her closet was small but organized, her clothes arranged by color and occasion. She reached past the training gear, past the formal dresses, and pulled out a simple white robe. It was soft, lightweight, with a belt that tied at the waist. She slipped it on, brushed her hair, and looked at herself in the mirror.

The Ice Queen stared back. But her eyes were softer than usual, her cheeks faintly flushed. She was nervous. The realization surprised her. She, who had faced monsters and assassins, who had spoken before emperors and clan heads, was nervous about buying a gift.

She left the room, her footsteps silent on the carpeted hall. The stairs were empty. The lobby was empty. She stepped outside into the cool morning air and walked toward the academy’s commercial district.

°°°

The commercial district was a collection of shops and stalls nestled between the dormitories and the main academic buildings. It was small by city standards, but it had everything a cadet might need—books, clothes, weapons, food. Most of the shops were still closed at this hour, their shutters down, their windows dark. But a few were open, their owners early risers like her.

Khione walked slowly, her hands clasped behind her back, her eyes scanning the displays. She passed a bookstore, its window filled with volumes on magic theory and monster biology. Not right. She passed a clothing boutique, its mannequins dressed in the latest fashions from the capital. Not right. She passed a jewelry store, its cases gleaming with rings and necklaces and bracelets.

She stopped at the jewelry store. A gift of precious metal and stone—it was traditional, safe, expected. But Nero was not traditional.

A ring would sit on his finger, a chain would hang around his neck, but neither would mean anything. She wanted something that would mean something.

She moved on.

The watch store was at the end of the street, its window displaying a dozen timepieces in elegant rows. Some were simple, with leather bands and white faces. Others were complex, with multiple dials and metal bracelets. Khione paused, her eyes drawn to one in particular.

It was not the most expensive. It was not the most elaborate. It was a simple watch, with a dark leather band and a face of deep blue, like the ocean at midnight. The numbers were silver, the hands thin and precise. There was no branding, no unnecessary decoration. Just clean lines and quiet elegance.

She entered the store.

The owner was an old man with gray hair and kind eyes. He looked up from his counter and smiled, recognizing her uniform, her bearing. ”Cadet. How can I help you?”

Khione walked to the display case and pointed to the blue-faced watch. ”That one.”

The old man nodded, retrieved it, and placed it on the counter.

”An excellent choice. This watch was made by a craftsman in the southern mountains. He uses only the finest materials—the leather is from river elk, the crystal is from volcanic glass, the movement is hand-assembled. It will keep time for a lifetime, if cared for properly.”

Khione picked up the watch. It was light in her hand, the leather soft, the metal cool. She turned it over, examining the back. There was a small engraving—a single word in an old script. She could not read it, but she did not need to.

”How much?”

The old man named a price. It was not small, but it was not extravagant. Khione reached into her robe and withdrew a small pouch of coins. She counted out the amount and placed them on the counter. 𝘧𝓇ℯℴ𝓂

The old man bowed. ”Would you like it wrapped?”

”Yes.”

He disappeared into the back and returned with a small box of dark wood, its surface polished smooth. Inside, nestled in black velvet, was the watch. He closed the lid and handed it to her.

Khione took the box and held it in both hands. It was small, light, almost insignificant. But it held a weight that had nothing to do with its size.

”Thank you,” she said.

The old man smiled. ”He is a lucky young man, whoever he is.”

Khione did not reply. She simply turned and walked out of the store, the box pressed against her chest.

The morning sun was higher now, the streets busier. Cadets in uniforms hurried past, some heading to class, some to training, some to breakfast. Khione walked among them, unnoticed, her white robe bright against the gray stone.

She thought of Nero. Of his hands, strong and calloused, the hands of a warrior. Of his wrist, bare and waiting. Of the watch, its blue face like the ocean, like her eyes, like the promise of something steady and enduring.

She would give it to him tonight, in the garden by the fountain. She would not make a speech. She would not declare her love in grand words. She would simply hand him the box and let him open it. And when he looked at her, surprised, grateful, she would smile.

The Ice Queen smiled now, alone in the crowded street, her heart full, her steps light.

The box was small. The gift was simple. But it was hers, chosen with care, given with love.

And that was enough. After all this was her first real gift to her man, she would like him to wear it as long as possible.
