Beast Devourer: I Grow Stronger by Eating Monsters

The innkeeper had stopped asking questions.

That helped.

Raven had paid to use a small storage room behind the kitchen. It had a large table, a narrow window, and enough space to place the Penance Hound’s corpse without turning the main dining room into a religious incident.

Although it was already too late to avoid that entirely.

Half of Bellcross knew Raven Ashford had returned dragging a dead sacred creature behind him.

The other half would probably know before lunch.

Roland closed the door.

”I’m going to say something that probably won’t change anything.”

Raven placed the knife on the table.

”Then you can save time.”

”Don’t eat the Church’s dog.”

Valeria leaned against the wall.

”For the first time since I’ve known him, Roland is giving excellent advice.”

Raven looked at the corpse.

The Consecrated Lumen Gland still emitted a faint glow from inside the opened chest.

Predation had been watching it since they returned.

[Unknown Sacred Structure.]

[Current Analytical Framework Insufficient.]

[Further Consumption May Provide Additional Data.]

FORGE had already given its own answer.

[No Active Forge Project Requires This Material.]

That removed the usual conflict. Raven didn’t have to decide whether to preserve the structure for a weapon or consume it himself.

Valeria saw his expression.

”No.”

”I haven’t said anything.”

”I know that face.”

Roland nodded.

”Same one you made before eating that poisonous thing.”

Raven picked up the knife.

”I survived.”

Valeria stared at him.

”That sentence does not improve through repetition.”

Raven began separating the white plates around the Hound’s chest.

The biology was strange. The armor wasn’t layered onto the creature like ordinary bone; it grew as part of the body itself, each plate connected by pale fibers that gave off a faint glow when cut.

Predation reacted.

[Structural Relationship Detected.]

[Analysis Incomplete.]

The gland had been damaged by both the projectile and the sword, but most of it remained intact. It was nearly the size of two fists, with golden veins spreading across its surface.

A clear luminous fluid seeped from the first cut.

Raven touched a drop with the tip of his knife.

[Concentrated Sacred Mana Detected.]

[Host Compatibility: UNKNOWN.]

Valeria straightened.

”Raven.”

”I know.”

”No, I don’t think you do.”

”That’s what I’m trying to find out.”

She exhaled slowly.

”Sometimes I forget how many bad decisions that sentence justifies.”

Raven cut away a small piece.

Roland grimaced.

”We can still stop.”

Raven put it into his mouth.

Valeria closed her eyes.

”Of course we can’t.”

Heat came first.

Then pain.

Raven stopped chewing as his tongue began to burn—not like ordinary fire, but deeper, as if the tissue itself rejected what he had put into his mouth.

[Foreign Energy Entering Host Tissue.]

[Biological Hostility Detected.]

He swallowed.

That was worse.

The heat traveled down his throat, and by the time it reached his stomach his jaw had tightened hard enough to hurt.

Valeria pushed away from the wall.

”Raven.”

He raised one hand.

”Wait.”

”I’m not waiting if you start burning from the inside.”

Roland stared at his mouth.

”There’s smoke coming out.”

Raven ran his tongue across his teeth.

”Not much.”

”That is not the point!” Valeria snapped.

Predatory Regeneration reacted.

So did Toxin Adaptation.

Neither could fully interpret the damage.

This wasn’t poison, fire, or corruption. It was sacred mana moving directly through tissue never designed to receive it.

Predation tried anyway.

[Attempting Decomposition.]

[...]

[Failure.]

A spasm ran through Raven’s abdomen.

Valeria was already beside him.

”Spit it out.”

”I swallowed it.”

”Then vomit.”

”No.”

She caught his arm.

”Why?”

”Because Predation is still reacting.”

”That is not reassuring.”

Raven cut a second piece.

Valeria grabbed his wrist.

”Don’t.”

”It needs more data.”

”Did your system say that?”

Raven waited.

[Additional Sample Recommended.]

Valeria read his expression and released a slow breath.

”I hate when it agrees with you.”

Raven gently freed his wrist.

”You don’t have to watch.”

”I’m absolutely watching. Someone has to make sure curiosity doesn’t kill you.”

Roland raised a hand.

”I vote for her.”

Raven ate the second piece.

The pain came faster this time. His throat partially constricted, and Predatory Regeneration began repairing the damage while it was still happening.

The combination was unpleasant enough that Raven braced one hand against the table.

[Foreign Sacred Mana Concentration Increasing.]

[Predation Analysis Accelerating.]

That mattered.

Raven kept his breathing controlled while Predation tracked how the sacred energy moved through his body, how the cells reacted to it, and which tissues failed first.

Then the system changed.

[Sacred Biological Structure Detected.]

[Reconstructing Predation Classification Model.]

A second window followed.

[Previous Analytical Restrictions Exceeded.]

[PREDATION Lv.3 → Lv.4.]

The pain remained.

But Predation stopped treating the sacred energy as meaningless interference.

[NOVEL BIOLOGICAL CATEGORY UNLOCKED.]

[SACRED STRUCTURES.]

Raven went still.

Roland noticed.

”Better?”

”Different.”

Another notification appeared.

[Compatible Adaptive Function Identified.]

[TRAIT ACQUISITION AVAILABLE.]

[RADIANT METABOLISM.]

Raven waited for the details.

[RADIANT METABOLISM — Lv.1]

[Host tissues can metabolize trace quantities of Sacred Mana.]

[Effects:]

— Limited reduction of survivable Sacred damage.

— Conversion of a minimal fraction of absorbed Sacred Mana into usable biological energy.

— Repeated survivable exposure may improve tolerance within biological limits.

[Limitations:]

— Does not provide Sacred immunity.

— Does not neutralize Sacred techniques.

— High-output Sacred attacks remain lethal.

— Adaptation cannot compensate for overwhelming rank disparity.

Raven read the final line twice.

Good.

Valeria watched him.

”And?”

”I can process small amounts of sacred mana.”

Roland looked at the organ.

”Process it into what?”

”Energy.”

”Can you eat a spell?”

”No.”

”Worth asking.”

Raven looked back toward the gland.

Radiant Metabolism was useful.

Not transformative.

It might make survivable sacred attacks slightly less damaging and convert a tiny fraction of the energy into something his body could use.

Against Elise, it wouldn’t erase the difference between an Awakened and a Champion.

That was exactly how Raven preferred it.

Predation reacted again.

[Previous Sacred Combat Data Available.]

[Reanalyzing.]

Raven immediately thought of the Hound freezing in place after the rifle shot.

Six seconds of complete immobility.

Attacks disappearing into golden light.

Then the explosion.

[PENANCE SANCTUARY.]

[Previous Analysis: PARTIAL.]

[Current Analysis: EXPANDING.]

Raven set down the knife.

Valeria noticed.

”What?”

”The ability it used.”

Roland pointed vaguely toward the crater outside town.

”The exploding one.”

”Yes.”

New markers appeared across the Hound’s body.

Not only the gland.

The heart.

Spine.

Inner surfaces of the white plates.

Deep muscle fibers.

Predation summarized the structure.

[PENANCE SANCTUARY — DISTRIBUTED SACRED BIOLOGICAL SYSTEM.]

[Required Components:]

— Consecrated Lumen Gland.

— Thoracic Conductive Channels.

— Spinal Preservation Lattice.

— White Carapace Nodes.

— Motor-Seal Fibers.

Raven understood immediately.

The gland wasn’t the ability.

It was only one part of a larger system distributed throughout the entire body.

Valeria stepped closer.

”Can you obtain it?”

”Yes.”

”That answer came too quickly.”

”I need more parts.”

She looked at the corpse.

Then at Raven.

”No.”

Roland started laughing.

Raven looked at him.

”What?”

”Nothing. I just understand why she said it before you finished.”

Valeria pointed at the opened chest.

”You just ate an organ that burned you from your mouth to your stomach.”

”I can process it better now.”

”That is not a defense.”

Predation opened one final window.

[Compatible Assimilation Pathway Identified.]

[Potential Trait Acquisition:]

[PENANCE SANCTUARY.]

[Current Host Adaptation Projection:]

— Activation: AUTOMATIC ONLY.

— Trigger: GENUINE LETHAL DAMAGE.

— Base Duration: 6 seconds.

— Movement During Activation: PROHIBITED.

— Incoming Physical and Magical Damage May Be Converted Into Stored Energy Within Trait Capacity.

— Stored Energy Released Omnidirectionally Upon Termination.

— Biological Recovery Required Before Repeat Activation.

— Force Exceeding Storage Tolerance May Penetrate Sanctuary.

Raven read it once.

It matched what he had observed.

For now.

Then the final line appeared.

[Host Combat Profile Mismatch Detected.]

[Evolution Potential: HIGH.]
