Beast Devourer: I Grow Stronger by Eating Monsters

Normally, the decision belonged to the Church.

The reasoning was simple enough. Once corruption reached a certain point, the victim was no longer considered capable of accurately judging the danger they represented to themselves or others.

Elise had accepted that logic for years.

Now Edrin was looking directly at her.

”What do you want to do?” she asked.

Halven turned sharply toward Elise.

Mara did the same.

It wasn’t a question Saints usually asked.

Edrin understood that.

”I can choose?”

Something tightened uncomfortably in Elise’s chest.

”Yes.”

”Saint Veyra—” Halven began.

Elise raised one hand.

Not aggressively.

Enough.

Edrin looked toward his sister.

”If I wait, could there be a cure?”

Elise refused to give him hope she couldn’t justify.

”Not with anything I know.”

”But there could be?”

”There could be something I don’t know.”

Halven frowned.

”The curse has already reached his soul.”

Elise didn’t look at him.

”That doesn’t make us omniscient.”

Edrin’s breathing had become shallow.

”If I wait and there isn’t a cure...”

”You may lose the ability to choose.”

”And other people could die.”

”Yes.”

Silence filled the office.

Mara tightened her grip on his hand.

”Then we wait.”

Edrin shook his head.

”No.”

”Edrin.”

”I don’t want to become that.”

”You don’t know that you will.”

”She does.”

Elise intervened before certainty could become another kind of cruelty.

”I know what will probably happen.”

Edrin looked at her.

”What would you do?”

It was a dangerous question because Elise already had an answer.

Purification.

Before she lost herself.

Before she hurt someone else.

Before corruption finished replacing whatever remained.

But that would be her choice.

Not his.

”What I would do doesn’t matter.”

Edrin gave a weak laugh.

”Yes, it does.”

Elise held his gaze.

”I would choose to end it before I lost myself.”

Mara immediately began shaking her head.

Edrin closed his eyes.

”Then that’s what I want.”

”No,” Mara said.

Elise remained still.

”Edrin, I need to hear this without your sister answering for you.”

Mara turned on her.

”He’s my brother!”

”I know.”

”Then you can’t ask me to stay quiet!”

Elise accepted the anger without flinching.

”You have every right to hate this.”

”I don’t want to hate it! I want him to live!”

Edrin opened his eyes again.

”Mara.”

She was crying now.

”No.”

”I want to choose while I’m still me.”

Elise’s jaw tightened slightly.

There it was.

Mercy.

Autonomy.

Two things Church doctrine often treated as though they would always point toward the same answer.

They didn’t.

”Are you certain?” Elise asked.

”Yes.”

”If you wait, you may have several more hours.”

”I don’t want to spend them wondering which breath is the one where I stop being myself.”

Elise nodded.

Not because the decision hurt less.

Because it belonged to him.

”Do you want her to stay?”

”Yes.”

”Do you want me to stay?”

”Yes.”

Mara cried silently beside him.

Elise sat next to the bench and took one of Edrin’s hands. Mara kept the other.

”Will it hurt?”

”No.”

”Are you sure?”

”Yes.”

”Good.”

Elise drew a slow breath and placed her free hand over his chest.

”May the Light remember what the darkness could not take from you.”

Grace entered him gently.

Precisely.

His heart stopped.

Edrin exhaled once, and the tension left his fingers.

Only then did Elise increase the flow of sacred mana.

Only after his decision had been carried out.

Only after the man himself was gone.

Golden light spread through the body and consumed the curse until the black veins beneath his skin disappeared.

Mara never released her brother’s hand.

Elise didn’t immediately release the other one either.

She still believed what she had done was mercy.

The difference was that this time Edrin had chosen to receive it.

Elise wasn’t sure why that made her feel better.

Or worse.

---

Halven found her outside beside the well.

Elise wasn’t washing her hands obsessively or trying to remove some invisible stain.

She was simply standing there.

”The doctrine doesn’t require consent in cases of terminal corruption,” he said.

Elise looked at him.

There was no accusation in his voice.

That somehow made the conversation harder.

”I know.”

”If he had chosen to wait, would you have allowed it?”

Elise took longer to answer.

”I don’t know.”

Halven frowned.

”That concerns me.”

”It concerns me too.”

”He could have lost control.”

”Yes.”

”He could have killed his sister.”

”Yes.”

”Then why ask?”

Elise looked back toward the building.

”Because he was still himself.”

”Until he wasn’t.”

”Exactly.”

Halven fell silent.

Elise continued.

”We say purification is an act of mercy.”

”It is.”

”Then what the person considers mercy should matter.”

Halven slowly shook his head.

”Corruption alters judgment.”

”Sometimes.”

”That is why the Church decides.”

Elise looked directly at him.

”And what happens when we decide too early?”

Neither of them spoke for several seconds.

That was the part doctrine made easier to avoid.

Saving someone against their will could still be salvation.

It could also become something else.

Elise still believed there were circumstances where the Church had to make the decision regardless of consent. If Edrin’s corruption had progressed further, if his mind had already begun to collapse, she would not have hesitated.

But for the first time in years, the distance between protecting someone and taking away their choice seemed uncomfortably small.

Halven eventually spoke.

”Raven Ashford will not consent to purification.”

Elise immediately recognized the difference.

Edrin had asked for help.

Raven had not.

She hadn’t even met him.

”We don’t know that he needs purification.”

”But if he does?”

Elise looked toward the eastern road.

”Then I’ll have to prove it first.”

”To him?”

”To him too.”

Halven didn’t look convinced.

Elise was.

At least about that much.

---

The road guard authorized the interrogation an hour later.

Derek Varn did not expect the White Saint to offer him water.

He stared at the cup as though she might have hidden something inside it.

Elise left it on the table.

”You don’t have to drink it.”

Derek looked at Halven.

Then back at her.

”I’m not cursed.”

”I didn’t say you were.”

”I don’t need purification.”

”I didn’t say that either.”

Elise recognized the fear.

Not fear of her as a person.

Fear of what she represented.

She quietly added that to the growing collection of things she had begun noticing since taking Raven’s case.

”I want to talk about Raven Ashford.”

Derek gave a dry laugh.

”Everyone does.”

”So it seems.”

”Are you going to kill him?”

Elise answered without decoration.

”Not if I can avoid it.”

Derek studied her carefully.

It wasn’t exactly a reassuring answer.

Elise knew that.

”Tell me what happened.”

He described the bounty, Cole, the threats, the shot from sixty-four meters, and the reload that followed.

Elise listened without interrupting.

”After killing Cole, did Raven attempt to kill anyone else?”

”No.”

”Why?”

”We surrendered.”

”Did he torture any of you?”

”No.”

”Did he take your money?”

”Some of the weapons. I don’t remember if he took coins.”

”Why did he bring you here alive?”

Derek’s jaw tightened.

”He wanted us to talk.”

”About what?”

”That distance wouldn’t protect us.”

Elise remained silent for a moment.

Power converted into reputation.

Reputation converted into deterrence.

She didn’t like it.

It had also turned eight possible deaths into one.

Both things could be true at the same time.

”Did he say anything about the Church?”

Derek indicated one of the nearby tables.

”He found the notice.”

Elise had already read the copy.

[Potentially Heretical Construction.]

”How did he react?”

”He wasn’t happy.”

”Afraid?”

Derek thought about it.

”No.”

That wasn’t particularly reassuring either.

”Angry?”

”More like...” He frowned. ”Like he’d found another problem he needed to understand.”

Elise almost smiled.

For some reason, that fit everything she had read about Raven Ashford.

”Thank you.”

She stood.

Derek frowned.

”That’s it?”

”Yes.”

”I thought the Church asked more questions.”

”I’m the one who’s here.”

That ended the conversation.

---

They reached the ambush site later that afternoon.

It gave Elise a clearer sense of the distance between them.

Raven had left the roadside post only hours before she arrived in town. Elise had lost time interviewing Derek, reviewing the reports, and dealing with Edrin, but Raven was traveling with supplies and equipment and showed no signs of behaving like a fugitive.

Halven examined the road and the position of the sun.

”If he maintains a normal pace, he’s probably about three hours ahead.”

Elise looked east.

Better than four.

Not much.

Enough.

”We continue to the next post.”

Halven nodded.

First, however, they examined the ambush site.

The mark from Raven’s shot was still visible on the rock wall.

Small.

Deep.

Elise approached.

”Here.”

Halven used a narrow extraction tool.

It took several minutes before he pulled something from the stone.

Not a complete projectile.

Only a deformed fragment.

The round had passed through Cole before striking the rock.

Elise accepted the piece using a strip of cloth.

Mercy vibrated.

Barely.

She went still.

”You felt that?” Halven asked.

”Yes.”

He reached for an examination crystal.

”Magical residue.”

”Wait.”

Elise channeled Grace.

Not purification.

Sensitivity.

Sacred mana brushed across the surface.

First came steel.

Then kinetic mana.

Electrical discharge.

Dense pressure.

The same signatures described in the original report.

And underneath them...

Something responded.

Elise opened her eyes.

”This was alive.”

Halven nodded.

”Once.”

She shook her head.

”No.”

Elise touched the fragment again, more carefully.

The response returned.

A tiny contraction.

Not a spirit.

Not a curse.

Biology.

Still functioning.

”It still is. Somehow.”

Halven frowned.

”That’s impossible.”

”It’s happening.”

Elise increased the sensitivity slightly.

Now she could distinguish layers.

Not one preserved function.

Several.

Electrical response.

Pressure regulation.

Conductive behavior.

Something connected to kinetic transfer.

All of them badly weakened by the shot and the damage to the projectile.

But still recognizable.

Halven watched her expression.

”What?”

”The report described residual signatures from multiple biological sources.”

”Yes.”

”They described it incorrectly.”

”Why?”

Elise held up the fragment.

”They aren’t only residues.”

She looked toward the hole in the rock and then back to the piece of deformed metal.

”The functions are still there.”

Halven went completely still.

”Inside a machine.”

”Yes.”

”That’s profanation.”

Elise didn’t answer immediately.

”Maybe.”

”Maybe?”

”I don’t detect a soul.”

”You don’t need a soul for something to be impure.”

”It matters to me.”

Halven studied her.

”Why?”

Elise thought about Edrin.

His hand in hers.

The question he had asked without saying it directly.

Can I choose?

”Because using living tissue and imprisoning what a creature was are not the same thing.”

Halven looked toward the fragment.

”And which one did Raven do?”

”I don’t know.”

”Then we should assume the greater risk.”

Elise shook her head.

”We should investigate the greater risk.”

”That isn’t the same thing.”

”Exactly.”

She sealed the fragment inside a small white evidence plate.

Halven watched her.

”And if he did the same thing to himself?”

Elise had already reached that question.

Regeneration.

Stonehide.

Accelerated movement.

Incompatible manifestations.

A single person maintaining functions that should belong to entirely different bodies.

The question was no longer only what Raven had built.

It was what Raven himself had become.

”We need to reach him,” Elise said.

Halven looked almost satisfied.

”Finally.”

Elise turned toward him.

”Don’t make that face.”

”What face?”

”The one that says you think I just agreed we’re going to arrest him.”

”Didn’t you?”

”No.”

”Then what did you agree to?”

Elise secured the evidence plate.

”That I have more questions than I did yesterday.”

---

They reached the next roadside post shortly before sunset.

Raven had passed through.

Two hours earlier.

Elise remained quiet when the clerk gave her the estimate.

Halven looked toward her.

”We’re closing the distance.”

”Yes.”

Two hours.

The pursuit finally had shape.

Raven had left the first town roughly four hours before Elise arrived. Interviews, investigation, and necessary stops had preserved much of that gap through the day.

But Raven wasn’t moving like a fugitive.

Elise was beginning to prioritize catching him.

Four hours had become two.

”Did he do anything here?” Elise asked.

The clerk shook her head.

”Bought food. Oil. Asked about blacksmiths.”

Elise almost smiled.

”Always blacksmiths.”

The clerk looked at her curiously.

”You know him?”

”Not yet.”

She pointed toward the road.

”He continued east.”

Halven asked, ”Exactly two hours ago?”

”Between two and two and a half.”

Elise looked toward the sky.

There was still daylight.

”We continue.”

Halven raised an eyebrow.

”Without resting?”

Elise looked at the horses.

They could manage a little longer.

”One hour. Then we stop.”

Halven nodded.

A compromise.

Not a blind pursuit.

But a pursuit nonetheless.

---

They made camp shortly before darkness fully settled.

There was no inn nearby.

Halven started the fire while Elise opened the white evidence pouch and removed the projectile fragment.

It still responded.

Weakly.

But unmistakably.

”We should send it to Biological Purity,” Halven said.

”Not yet.”

”They can analyze it better.”

”After I speak with Raven.”

”That could compromise the investigation.”

Elise looked up.

”Or prevent us from deciding what he is before asking him.”

Halven was quiet for a moment.

”You don’t trust Biological Purity.”

”I trust the Church.”

”That wasn’t what I asked.”

Elise looked back at the fragment.

”Some people inside the Church believe protection means eliminating every risk before understanding it.”

”Sometimes that saves lives.”

”Yes.”

”Like Edrin.”

Elise went still.

”Edrin chose.”

”He didn’t have to.”

”It mattered to me.”

Halven frowned.

”If Raven is corrupted, he may refuse precisely because the corruption has already altered his judgment.”

There it was.

The real conflict.

Doctrine had an answer.

A person’s autonomy could lose legitimacy once corruption damaged their ability to reason.

That was rational.

It was also a dangerous door.

Because the institution deciding that someone’s judgment was compromised was usually the same institution asking for authority over them.

Elise held the fragment between her fingers.

”Then I’ll need to be very certain before I take that choice away from him.”

”And if waiting for certainty gives him time to hurt someone?”

”Then I’ll carry that risk.”

”You shouldn’t.”

”Someone has to.”

Halven shook his head.

”You can’t turn everything into personal responsibility.”

”I’m not trying to.”

”You do it constantly.”

A weak smile appeared.

”I’m working on that.”

She returned the fragment to the evidence pouch.

”We should catch them tomorrow.”

Halven checked the map.

”If they leave at dawn and maintain the same pace, probably before noon.”

That was concrete.

Elise nodded.

Tomorrow.

For the first time since receiving the file, Raven Ashford no longer felt like a distant figure at the end of a chain of reports.

He was only hours away.

And Elise had found a question that appeared nowhere in Church doctrine.

If Raven needed to be saved...

Who decided what saving him meant?

She still believed she knew the answer.

That was what had started to worry her.
