Beast Devourer: I Grow Stronger by Eating Monsters

Hadrik examined the new support collar, turning it beneath the forge light.

”Was that good?”

”Yes.”

”Then I want it officially recorded that a hammer helped build your sophisticated weapon.”

Raven pointed toward the anvil.

”The hammer was never the problem.”

”I’ll remember that when you’re famous.”

”I’d prefer you didn’t.”

Hadrik snorted and returned to the main forge.

Raven remained at the workbench, staring at the number.

Eighty-two percent.

Still not enough.

He had chosen eighty-five as his minimum before allowing FORGE to begin permanent construction. More importantly, FORGE still wasn’t recommending construction.

Something significant remained unresolved.

Raven inspected the architecture again.

The Activation System initiated the cycle. The Reservoir supplied mana. The Pulse Core converted that energy into acceleration. The Pressure Chamber absorbed excess force, while the frame distributed the remaining stress.

Nothing obvious appeared wrong.

So he started again.

Activation.

Mana transfer.

Acceleration.

Pressure regulation.

Structural distribution.

Still nothing.

Valeria had been watching him for several minutes.

”You’re repeating the same thing.”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

”Because something is still wrong.”

”Does FORGE say that?”

”Not directly.”

”Then how do you know?”

Raven pointed at the percentage floating in his vision.

”Because it’s still eighty-two.”

Valeria approached the table.

”Maybe eighty-two is the best these materials can achieve.”

”Then I should understand why.”

Raven ran through the firing sequence again, this time imagining the forces instead of the components.

The Impulse Spark initiated the cycle. The Reservoir discharged. The Pulse Core accelerated the projectile. The Pressure Chamber absorbed excess force and vented what it couldn’t recycle.

The projectile moved forward.

The excess pressure escaped.

Raven stopped.

Where was it escaping?

He rotated the projected architecture.

He had copied the Matriarch too faithfully.

Her lateral pressure valves made sense because she weighed several tons and anchored herself with six limbs. When pressure escaped sideways, her mass absorbed the imbalance.

A man holding a rifle had neither advantage.

If the prototype vented hard enough through lateral ports, the discharge could torque the barrel off target before the projectile cleared it. At higher output, it could also burn or injure the shooter.

That wasn’t merely a recoil problem.

It was the missing stabilization problem.

”I found it.”

Valeria leaned closer.

”What?”

”The exhaust.”

Raven rotated the projection so she could follow where he was looking.

”I copied too much of the Matriarch.”

”I thought copying its function was the entire point.”

”I need the function, not the anatomy.”

The distinction became obvious once he said it aloud.

The Matriarch released excess force sideways because her body had evolved around resisting it.

The rifle needed those forces aligned with its firing axis.

Preferably backward.

Raven’s mind returned to systems from Earth: muzzle brakes, gas redirection, recoil compensation. The principles didn’t map perfectly onto the biological weapon, but the underlying idea did.

Force didn’t have to disappear.

It had to go somewhere useful.

He redesigned the Pressure Chamber’s secondary channels. Instead of venting laterally, two smaller exhaust routes angled backward along the weapon’s axis, far enough from the shooter’s face and hands to avoid direct exposure.

The remaining pressure would still stress the frame, but part of the rearward exhaust could counteract the violent movement produced by the Pulse Core.

FORGE took longer to evaluate the modification.

Then the interface changed.

[Pressure Exhaust Vector Recalculated.]

[Rearward Force Redirection: SUCCESSFUL.]

[Recoil Compensation Effect: PARTIAL.]

[Projectile Axis Deviation Reduced.]

[Operator Stability Increased.]

A second series of notifications followed.

[Projectile Stabilization System: COMPLETE.]

[PROJECT: PROTOTYPE RIFLE.]

[Core Systems: 6/6.]

[Activation System: COMPLETE.]

[Stable Mana Storage: COMPLETE.]

[Structural Barrel: COMPLETE.]

[Projectile Acceleration: COMPLETE.]

[Recoil Regulation: COMPLETE.]

[Projectile Stabilization: COMPLETE.]

[Assembly Stability: 82% → 87%.]

Then, finally:

[Prototype Construction Authorized.]

Raven went still.

Valeria noticed immediately.

”What happened?”

”Eighty-seven.”

”And?”

”FORGE authorized construction.”

She looked at the collection of metal, organs, crystal, filaments, and temporary mounts covering the table.

”Then build it.”

Raven didn’t, not immediately.

He had spent weeks reaching this point, but now the decision carried more weight than expected.

Not fear.

Irreversibility.

The biological components could still be modified while separate. The Black Mithril could still be reshaped. The internal architecture could still be rearranged without sacrificing anything important.

Once construction began, FORGE would permanently adapt the harvested structures to the weapon. Some mistakes could be corrected afterward. Others would require destroying what he had spent weeks acquiring.

Valeria seemed to understand.

”Is eighty-seven enough for you?”

Raven studied the design.

On Earth, he would have considered a weapon with thirteen percent uncertainty in its overall performance unacceptable.

But that wasn’t what the number meant.

FORGE wasn’t saying there was a thirteen percent chance the rifle would explode. It was measuring the stability of an experimental architecture under conditions that had never been physically tested because the weapon didn’t exist yet.

There were limits to theory.

Eventually, a prototype had to be built, tested, and improved.

That was what made it a prototype.

”Yes.”

Raven selected the option.

[Begin Prototype Construction?]

[WARNING: Core biological sources will undergo permanent functional adaptation.]

He thought about each one.

The Arc Needle Queen he had chosen to harvest instead of devour.

The Deepwell Toad.

The Black Mithril from Dunvar.

The Stormhorn’s Kinetic Pulse, a Skill he had wanted badly enough to hesitate before giving it up.

The Blastback Matriarch that had nearly crushed his lungs.

Every component represented a choice.

FORGE was what those choices had been building toward.

”Yes.”

The Authority responded.

[Construction Initiated.]

A rifle did not magically appear in his hands.

Instead, FORGE took partial control of the adaptation process—not of Raven’s hands, but of the materials.

The Black Mithril responded first. Thin lines of mana traced the architecture Raven had developed. The metal didn’t melt; specific sections softened just enough to become workable while the surrounding structure remained rigid.

Raven called Hadrik back into the workshop.

The blacksmith stopped at the door when he saw the glowing marks.

”That’s cheating.”

”Yes.”

”Good. I only wanted confirmation.”

Following FORGE’s projected lines, Hadrik worked the softened Black Mithril while Raven maintained the geometry.

The barrel took shape in sections. It was thick and considerably wider than anything Raven would have chosen on Earth, but the additional material supported the internal channels and biological isolation layers.

Behind it came the structural chamber: a reinforced housing that allowed living systems to sit inside the weapon without directly touching the Black Mithril.

The Coppervein tendon came next. FORGE treated the material as Raven integrated it into the channels. The biological filaments contracted, hardened, and anchored themselves along the internal structure like exposed nerves.

They were no longer merely insulation. They formed the feedback network synchronizing pressure regulation and stabilization.

The Deepwell Reservoir had to be reduced, not destroyed. Its crystalline mass folded inward under FORGE’s guidance until it fit inside a reinforced housing near the rear of the rifle. Separate channels remained intact, preserving the primary mana supply and Raven’s auxiliary regulation routes.

Then came the Impulse Spark.

Three blue crystalline structures settled around the activation mechanism. When Raven tested the future trigger assembly, one crystal responded with a faint electrical pulse.

Not a shot.

Recognition.

The Pulse Core was harder. FORGE preserved its central architecture while stripping away useless tissue. Raven and Hadrik secured the remaining structure precisely along the firing axis.

Its alignment had to be exact. Asymmetric acceleration would make the rifle inaccurate at best and catastrophic at worst.

The Projectile Stabilization system formed around it rather than appearing as a separate component. Conductive filaments monitored load, Black Mithril channels constrained force, pressure pathways corrected imbalance, and rearward vents prevented lateral exhaust from twisting the weapon.

The sixth system had no single organ Raven could point to.

It existed because the other five had finally been engineered to cooperate.

The Pressure Chamber came last.

The Matriarch’s enormous biological structure couldn’t fit inside a rifle in its original form. FORGE separated functional rings, valves, membranes, and muscular segments, preserving only what was necessary to reproduce the pressure cycle. Raven integrated them around the acceleration assembly while Hadrik secured the external support structure.

When finished, the chamber no longer resembled the organ that had nearly collapsed Raven’s lungs.

Its function survived.

Its anatomy did not.

That was FORGE.

Not replication.

Adaptation.

Almost three hours passed.

Morning light leaked through the workshop windows when Raven fitted the last external plate into place.

FORGE reacted.

[Structural Integration Complete.]

[Biological Systems Responsive.]

[Mana Channels Connected.]

[Pressure Regulation Functional.]

[Projectile Stabilization Functional.]

[Manual Loading Mechanism Operational.]

[Core Systems: 6/6.]

[Assembly Stability: 87%.]

Then the notification Raven had been waiting for appeared.

[PROJECT COMPLETE: ”PROTOTYPE RIFLE Mk.I”]

Raven stopped breathing for a moment.

Not because the weapon was beautiful.

It wasn’t.

Objectively, it was ugly.

The rifle measured almost one meter and thirty centimeters from stock to muzzle. It was longer than Raven preferred for close combat and substantially heavier than any service rifle he had carried on Earth.

Black Mithril formed the thick, dark barrel and most of the load-bearing frame, while hardened organic structures remained visible around several external sections.

Thin blue filaments ran along one side.

The compact Deepwell Reservoir created a noticeable housing near the stock.

Armored plates protected the adapted Pressure Chamber behind the barrel, while two exhaust ports angled backward along either side.

The Impulse Spark emitted a faint blue glow inside the activation mechanism.

Only a few parts looked entirely familiar.

Raven had designed the grip himself. The angle was right, his finger fell naturally near the trigger, and his support hand had a clear forward position. The stock was heavier than he wanted but adjustable.

Along the top ran a simple mechanical sighting system.

No optics yet.

Nothing elegant.

But when Raven lifted the weapon and settled the stock against his shoulder, familiarity returned immediately.

Weight.

Balance.

Barrel.

Trigger.

Sight line.

It didn’t matter that parts of it had once belonged inside monsters.

It was a rifle.

Valeria slowly walked around him.

She studied it from several angles before speaking.

”After all of that, I expected something more elegant.”

Raven adjusted the weapon against his shoulder.

Heavy.

Too much forward weight.

Something to correct in a later version.

”It’s a prototype.”

”It looks like a crossbow and a corpse had a child.”

Raven looked down at the weapon.

Black Mithril.

Hardened tissue.

Crystal.

Biological filaments.

Adapted organs.

”That is surprisingly accurate.”

Hadrik seemed less amused.

”That is what you built in my workshop.”

”Yes.”

”I don’t know whether I should be proud or burn my tools.”

”Don’t burn them. I’ll probably need them again.”

”That was exactly what I was afraid of.”

Roland arrived at precisely the right moment to miss almost all of the work and see only the finished result.

He stopped in the doorway.

”Is that...?”

Raven looked at him.

”Yes.”

Roland stepped closer.

”I don’t know what I expected.”

Valeria pointed toward the rifle.

”I expected something more elegant.”

”I expected something smaller.”

Raven looked between them.

”You can build the next one.”

Roland immediately raised both hands.

”I love it.”

Valeria smiled.

”Coward.”

”I’m learning survival.”

Raven returned his attention to the rifle.

FORGE still had plenty to say.

[”PROTOTYPE RIFLE Mk.I”]

[Classification: Experimental Forge Weapon.]

[Core Systems: 6/6.]

[Operation: SINGLE-SHOT.]

[Reload: MANUAL.]

[Primary Ammunition: UNCALIBRATED EXPERIMENTAL PROJECTILE.]

[Mana Consumption Per Discharge: HIGH.]

[Pressure Recycling: INCOMPLETE.]

[Thermal Accumulation: HIGH.]

[Recommended Consecutive Discharge Limit: UNKNOWN.]

[Accuracy Calibration: REQUIRED.]

[Structural Fatigue Model: INCOMPLETE.]

[Repeated-Fire Malfunction Risk: ELEVATED.]

Valeria watched his expression change as he read.

”There’s a ’but.’”

”Several.”

”How bad?”

Raven read through the list again.

”One shot before manual reload. High mana consumption. It’ll accumulate heat. The ammunition isn’t calibrated. I don’t know how many shots the structure can survive before something degrades, and FORGE doesn’t recommend repeated firing until we have real data.”

Roland looked at the rifle.

”So you built something you still don’t know works.”

Raven corrected him.

”I built something that works in theory.”

Roland glanced toward the wall with the hole from their previous test.

”That sentence doesn’t help.”

”It wasn’t meant to.”

Valeria pointed toward the barrel.

”Accuracy?”

”Uncalibrated.”

”Recoil?”

”Estimated.”

”Range?”

”Unknown.”

”Power?”

Raven paused.

That was the important question.

He knew what each system was supposed to do, how the five acquired sources had been adapted to support them, and how mana and pressure should move through the weapon.

He had no idea what would happen when all of it acted on a real projectile at full output.

Neither did FORGE.

Not yet.

The final notification appeared.

[LIVE-FIRE TESTING REQUIRED.]

Raven held the rifle for several seconds.

He had spent weeks acquiring organs, mineral, knowledge, and increasingly specific injuries to reach this point.

Now he had it.

A weapon that did not exist anywhere else in Veyr.

Not an enchanted sword.

Not a bow.

Not a wand.

Not an artifact reproducing a form of magic the world already understood.

Five acquired sources had been forced into an architecture containing six functional systems, all working together inside a machine designed around principles Raven had carried from another world.

A rifle.

Experimental.

Heavy.

Ugly.

Inefficient.

Potentially dangerous to its own user.

Raven smiled slightly.

Valeria noticed.

”That worries me.”

”What?”

”You never smile like that when something is going to be cheap.”

Raven checked the loading mechanism.

Empty.

For now.

”We need somewhere to test it.”

Hadrik answered immediately.

”Far away from my workshop.”

”That was already the plan.”

Roland looked at the rifle again.

”When?”

Raven watched the warning floating across his vision.

[LIVE-FIRE TESTING REQUIRED.]

He had built a gun in a world of swords.

Now he had to find out whether he would survive the first shot.
