The Scumbags Guide to Enslaving Demon's

”Tell me where your sister is.”

The lioness-eared warrior spat blood onto the pavement. ”You want a location, Devourer? Follow the hounds. They are the war camp’ build.”

Austin did not like how cleanly that fit his plans.

He left the freed prisoners under Elena’ care and took Seven and Rin into the burning district. The hunt began where the last hound had fled. He could smell the creature now through the trait he had stolen from the leash- rider: green chain oil, hot fur, and the bitter iron scent of Malrec’ authority.

Rin crouched on a collapsed awning above him. ”Three hounds. They know we are following.”

”Good,” Austin replied. ”It saves time.”

Seven’ damaged plating clicked as he moved through the smoke. ”The hounds will lead us into a kill- zone.”

”Probably.”

The first hound attacked from a pharmacy doorway.

It was larger than the ones near the wagon, with a skull wrapped in iron bands and a collar marked by six green runes. Austin caught it by the throat before it could bite. The creature thrashed, claws shredding his jacket, but Command Bite had already shown him what to look for.

The collar was a command. Every command had a throat.

Austin pressed his thumb to the nearest rune.

”Obey,” he said.

Black light flashed from his palm.

The hound froze.

[Command Bite activated.]

[Target resistance: high.]

[Current order capacity: one short imperative.]

Austin felt the command settle into the demon’ bones. The instinct was ugly. It was not persuasion or pact. It was a hook driven into a living mind.

”Track the other hounds,” he ordered.

The beast growled, then turned and ran.

Rin dropped beside him, her tails lashing. ”You really do intend to make everything kneel.”

”Only what tries to kill me.”

”And after it stops trying?”

Austin looked at the hound’ s trail disappearing through smoke. ”Then I decide whether it has a use.”

They followed the controlled beast into an old shopping arcade. Burned mannequins stood behind broken glass. The hound led them past a flooded food court and down into a loading garage where green fire burned without fuel.

The trap waited in the center.

Two chain- hounds perched on a delivery truck. Six leash- riders watched from the upper ramp. The final hound stood beneath the garage lights, a collar of black metal around its throat instead of green.

”Malrec’ personal mark,” Rin whispered.

The black- collared hound spoke.

”Devourer.”

Its voice came from the collar, not its throat.

Austin stepped forward. ”You have my attention.”

”Lord Malrec invites you to bring the rare bloodlines to his war camp. He will grant your humans a painless death.”

Seven moved to Austin’ side. ”A generous lord.”

The hound’ s collar turned toward him. ”The broken guard is still functional. Curious.”

Austin felt Seven go still beside him. The words had landed where armor could not reach. Malrec’ riders knew Seven’ s old designation. They knew the former guard’ s original chain, and they believed it still gave them the right to speak about him as an object.

”Seven,” Austin said without looking away from the hound, ”what do you want to do with them?”

The enforcer’ s violet eye narrowed. ”Break them.”

”Then break them.”

Seven’ answer was not a roar. It was motion. He crossed the garage in a blur of fractured bone armor and drove his shoulder into the delivery truck. The vehicle rolled onto its side. Riders tumbled from the roof, their lances clattering across the floor. Seven seized the first by the ankle and used him to strike the second.

Austin snapped his fingers.

The controlled hound lunged for the nearest leash- rider.

The garage erupted.

Rin vanished into red afterimages. Seven charged the truck, taking a chain lance through the shoulder and ripping the weapon free before slamming its owner into the windshield. Austin ran straight at the black- collared hound.

The creature met him with impossible speed.

They collided hard enough to crack the concrete. The hound’ s jaws closed around Austin’ s forearm. Bone-Plating held, but only barely. Austin drove his knee into its ribs, then smashed his forehead into the iron- banded skull.

The black collar pulsed.

A vision hit him.

Malrec stood on a moving fortress of bone wagons beyond the district. Fires lit the road behind him. Dozens of demon banners whipped above the camp. At the center, a massive silver cage held a woman with lion ears, pale fur, and a crown of broken antlers.

The Beast-Queen’ s heir.

Malrec looked directly through the hound’ s eyes.

”Bring me the Devourer alive,” the lord said. ”I want to watch him choose his first crown.”

The vision broke.

Austin grabbed the black collar with both hands.

DEVOUR begged to take it.

He could taste Malrec’ s authority through the metal. One bite might give him a direct path into the lord’ s command network. It might also let Malrec’ poison into him.

Rin appeared behind the hound and sank both claws into its flank. ”Decide!”

Austin did.

He bit the collar.

Black metal dissolved on his tongue. The command inside fought him like a snarling animal. He swallowed anyway.

>

[Fragment of Lord Malrec’ s Authority consumed.]

>

[New sense acquired: Lord’ s Scent.] [Assimilation increased.]

>

[Warning: hostile authority now recognizes host.]

The hound collapsed.

The remaining riders broke and ran. Seven pursued two. Rin took another from the ramp, dragging him into the smoke. Austin stood over the dead hound and felt Malrec’ scent spreading through the city.

The demon lord was coming.

Not in days.

Tonight.

Austin looked toward Grand Meridian. He saw the hotel in his mind through the root network, its walls thickening with black armor, its survivors preparing for a siege they did not yet understand.

He smiled.

”Let him come,” Austin said.

The black hunger inside him answered with a slow, delighted pulse.

Behind him, the controlled hound whimpered. Its temporary command was fading. Austin looked at the animal and felt the new trait offer him an easier future: command every demon he defeated, never bargain, never risk refusal.

He released the hook instead.

The hound staggered free, confused and bleeding. It ran into the smoke without looking back.

Rin watched Austin closely. ”Mercy?”

Before Austin could answer, Elena’ voice crackled through the scavenged radio at Seven’ s belt. ”Austin, the Bastion roots just felt something huge moving through the south street. We have civilians still outside the inner doors.”

Austin grabbed the radio. ”Get them inside. Arm everyone who can stand. Feed the vines the bodies of the riders.”

A pause followed. ”That last part is going to upset people.”

”Then tell them Malrec is coming.”

He handed the radio back to Seven. The city had changed while they hunted. Every shadow seemed to carry the demon lord’ s scent now. Every distant fire looked like a signal beacon for the army moving closer through the ruined city straight toward them now relentlessly.

”Efficiency,” he replied. ”A free hound carries a better story than a dead one.”

But as they turned for home, Austin wondered whether that answer had become true, or whether it only sounded better than admitting he had liked making it obey.
