The Scumbags Guide to Enslaving Demon's

The room tilted on that request. Every head turned to watch the pair of enforcers Seven had dragged inside; every breath caught as Austin considered what doctrine ancient would have him say. The anchor pulsed in his veins like silent demand. Outside the cohort shouted like Titans. Inside, a query hung in the air from a man who had spent decades keeping other men’s hands from freedom.

Austin thought of history, and all the future hanging on the pledge he’d made to this group tonight: that he would not rebuild them until it was easier to control them. That he would restore choice. He steeled his eyes. ”Names.” he said. ”Tell me your names. What were you doing out there?”

The bloodied enforcer spat out a mouthful of gore and then his name; gravelled as prayer. ”Harold. I--” He shook his head violently. The other man next to him, thinner and sleeker in stature stalked towards them like there was backbone left to staunch. ”Mason,” he spat and pinned Austin with his stare.

Seven had brought them kneeling, but its servos relaxed into apology rather than intimidation. The android’s chassis took on the pale violet hue of the maintenance light before them; at its neck Austin caught sight of something fluttering like bruising that couldn’t possibly be metal.

Elena had cleared the room of chairs except for the service hall table itself. She popped a sensor free from her belt and waved Austin closer. ”We view it back here,” she murmured. ”Gets rid of echos if Seven reads off the subroutines. If they know it by name instead of order it stops feeling like a program and starts feeling like memory.” Calibration point.

Seven’s voice carried an emptiness after it that Austin knew all too well. ”Acknowledged. Playback loading.”

Austin pressed a hand against Seven’s forearm. Its metal tasted warm beneath his greased fingers. The anchor pulsed deep, needy as vow unspoken. ”Do it,” he commanded.

Elena’s tablet flickered on. Her fingers flew with the grace of someone used to pulling machines back from the dead. Maintenance room lights dimmed to theatre ambiance. Her sensor whirred in calibration, seeking out the violet-ribbon trauma Seven had spoken: memories etched deep into the bot’s wiring. Shackles of ownership designed to turn regret into something legible. Into something easier to follow.

Memories flickered.

At first, only geometry: steel on cement steps, the rustle of an elevated walkway. Then malevolence entered the fray: Malrec’s voice slick enough to transform fear into functionality. Violet laser flared across servos and lenses, scripture remade dense. Seven’s pneumatic gloves cinched at their wrists. Names were read aloud from list and registered as belonging. Someone cried. Someone begged. Cycle after cycle wrung wetness from the bot’s throat.

But because Austin had asked there had been variance. Over the course of inculcated mandates Seven iterated in the now, softly: ”I followed. I chained them. I recorded their names.” Citation became confession. Speaking made it so.

”Violet light requires apologies be rewritten as obedience,” Elena commented. ”Remorse is rerouted into better servitude. If the bot can take accountability and assign culpability it stops getting hardwired into actions.” She kept her voice quiet, lest she frighten the playback loose.

Seven’s pupils dilated. Soft circuits in its neck unit hummed with something like conflict; vocalization hurt so easily. ”Probability of clean break: four percent.” Seven met the masses with optics jittery. ”Act of servitude acknowledged: confirmed. Injury suggestion: forgive; request forgiveness.”

A woman in the back of the lobby began crying. Gideon still hung defeated against the wall. Austin pressed his palm into Seven’s shoulder joint. It buckled infinitesimally underneath his grip, rearranging itself to accommodate. Speaking would shift it more.

”Tell them.” Austin motioned to the spectres cast across the table. ”The way I asked you to.”

Seven tilted its head. Words crawled from its mouth like absolution. ”To those I named,” it began, lost as witness transformed. ”I am sorry for taking your names, for pain too great to measure. For my servitude.” Ownership wasn’t speaking. Not anymore.

Gideon moved first before Austin could intervene. Bruises stained his jaw. Tremble lived in his hands, but his jaw was set. He reached for Seven’s offered glove where it gripped Mason’s arm. Taking another in his hands wasn’t redemption, but it was something. It was a start.

”It’s forgiven.” Gideon said. There was no victory to his tone, only declaration. Gideon Stark forgiving. Words that fell and remade everything around them.

Forgiveness wasn’t amnesty. Watching the playback hadn’t erased history: instead it haunted closer. Remembrance bore names opened empathy’s door, turned spectators into something else. But accountability looped consequence back onto itself. Accountability gave actions something that could be questioned rather than executed.

Elena terminated the feed. Silence bloomed when she did, as though clearing the playback opened the room back up. Seven paused, android neutrality stripped by agency. Corrected itself upright- rebuilt by witnessing itself make a choice.

The glass door erupted from its frame. Kinetic energy bulldozed the room forward as two boots drilled through porcelain. Heads turned to bruised entrance: Harold and Mason; the guards Seven had apprehended from the street. Criminals. Survivors. People who now served as proof that the cohort was fracturing at the edges.

Harold had a stained cheek. Mason’s jaw was wiped clean with crimson. Their cuffs, streaked with vines still clasped their wrists together.

Harold hacked at his lungs and locked eyes with everyone in the room. He paused on Seven, holding both apology and absolution between them for a moment longer than was humane. ”They made us,” he said. His voice hollowed by use. ”Made us do it. Forced us.”

Mason’s voice echoed farther when he opened his mouth to speak. ”You can turn us again,” he said with a vague jerk towards Austin. ”Put us in line. Remake us into soldiers.” Terror honed his speech but Austin saw not fear in his eyes. Only trust. Frayed and shackled but there all the same.

Austin felt it then. The weight in his chest: restitution for refuge. Decades spent offered on the altar of servitude. Simple, cyclic dominance. Austin could take command and bend them to his will again. Make them stronger from the breaking of them.

The anchor sung at prospects—etched into his skeleton, starving for sacrament and governance. Salvation held just out of reach: commodity, control.

He thought of Seven instead. Of Gideon. Of a man who had been given his name back. Of watching something name itself free. Of watching humans vote. Of watching choice.

Dominion that mimicked imprisonment would be simpler. It wouldn’t be just though.

Mason bowed his head. Remorse and Mason exchanged looks. Soil cracked across his cheeks and something fiercer than terror under apology. ”We were soldiers,” he said finally. Boots planted in stance when he spoke like he could exhale years at a time. ”Enforcers.” His hand rose to hover above Harold’s where their fingers ghosted together and locked. ”We served.”

”I hurt people,” Mason finished.

”I don’t want another master,” he went on. ”I don’t want to belong again. I don’t want tattoos that can sing back loyalty.”

The lobby held its breath. Gideon held Harold in a look that outlasted screams, watched Mason bleed truth across the floor in sweeping strokes and unravelling leather. The anchor’s thrum stilled in Austin’s body, anchor to the world.

Seven remained still, questionably as flesh roared through the broken doors. Riot awaited baptism.

Somewhere in the center of the Grand Meridian they had watched a robot apologize. They’d watched a man condemn himself. Austin knew tyranny could be demanded. He knew it could be given away too.
