The Scumbags Guide to Enslaving Demon's

The city sighed beneath the hotel. Slowly. Disinterestedly. Like it gave a damn about the question.

A shout echoed from the lobby’s ceiling. Voice lined with brass and terrible intention. ”Citizens of the Grand Meridian,” the voice began, sharp as the edge of a cleaver. ”Lord Malrec lays claim to this structure by anchor and precedent. Surrender the hotel’s legal core and allow yourselves to be re-tethered. Deny Austin Veyron his pleasure and let your citizens live.”

The piece of graft beneath Austin’s palm compressed tightly, echoing announcement through skin and wire. A stair lip clicked to nova. Room pitched down with it, angling towards a new set of laws that could warp distance to compliance.

Austin stood. The read-only link thrummed beneath his skin—small price to pay. Small purchase. The System updated a note in his mind.

System: [Public contract dispute. Options: legal contest or forced devourment. Caution: consumption will trigger higher-archy escalation. Assimilation risk: moderate to high if escalated.]

There was a subtle shift. News reporters had come. Sight-feeding insects portentous against duct tape. Standing room only. The lobby had voted itself a jury overnight; seating arrangements organized themselves around planters and duct-taped couches between nights.

Seven curled a hand tight on the edge of the desk like it might hold everything upright. Elena rested her hand against a wrench and the barest proposition of hope.

”Lord Malrec’s decree won’t hold weight over free will,” Austin said. Straightened into the spotlight carved from the hotel’s lobby bones. Quietened the crowd behind him. ”I will not give up the core without trial by public audience. I challenge the Chain to a contract duel. Let there be witnesses.”

A shuffle; voices knit distrust into tangled yarn. Fear slick as sap. Austin heard immediately when Vorth spoke; tall speaker pole writhed voice free of an oily nest of curled brass teeth.

”A corporeal presenting judgment,” the Chain- Warden mocked. Laughter rustled like dropped chain- link. ”You risk too much consequence for that meat suit, Austin Veyron. Declare your wager.”

”I wager the Grand Meridian’s occupancy charter, and autonomy of this building as decided by its citizens.” Austin didn’t blink. ”If I lose, I’ll willingly submit to lawful ownership and vacate when allowed safe passage for the civilians. If we win, Malrec forfeits this location to us and the Chain lifts anchors.”

Faces moved; murmuring seismic ripple that passed through crowd. Some applauded bravery. Others accused him of presenting insanity to be marked. Elena swallowed. Seven’s grip tightened—it had been clawing like he might drag Austin backwards. But he didn’t. Instead, he slid his loyalty across space where hand used to rest.

”The contract will be lawful,” Vorth decided after a pregnant pause. ”I will prosecute on behalf of Lord Malrec. You will provide your plea. Witnesses can be approved by law- stone. Devouring or otherwise consuming the law in the middle of this duel will be treasonous. escalation will be applied.”

System: [Adjudication accepted. Legal recording enabled. Devour of tether binding parties during duel: prohibited. Assimilation risk: moderate to high if rules broken. Caution: favours towards testimony and procedural law. ].

The Grand Meridian lobby had never felt just before tonight. Like gravity balanced delicately around ankles. Old timers shuffled forward; brittle-eyes made bold by chance.

Floor cleaner who dusted ceilings for decades because someone from the hotel had asked politely one day. Boy who kept tattoos of his district pressed sleeves long; muscle would grow in time. Welder Austin didn’t recognize who stitched radiators closed after they dimmed and hallway lights left the civilians thinking hotel had abandoned them.

They were jury. Jury constructed out of Austin’s ego, and his own eagerness to bet.

”We will speak honestly,” Austin began, blunt as hammer strike. Truth about the hotel’s implanted memory—parking lots buzzing on lazy afternoons, suites humming only with conversation or elevator drift. There was life under so many feet, but the hotel had never been given spirit by laws and currency. It had been carved into fidelity by people who came to sleep and spend money, not anchors. Laws would recognize ownership. Heavier things deserved choice.

The right to name who watched over them.

Vorth answered by drawing bright razor blades across rule: ownership tethered to land and electrical veins, cleanse of anchor before civic unrest. Argument slid easily across room over glass bones. His voice dangerous privilege honed easy.

”I cannot give autonomy.” it was final, agreed upon by lines of sight behind him. Tether signing themselves into presentation. ”The hotel recognizes no right except for anchor law.”

Truth was a double edged sword. Austin knew buying time was dangerous; hesitation punished with claws buried in spine. He could feel the core echoing his pulse beneath his ribs. The bruise he laid hand over buzzed with interest and hunger. Skin shifted over muscles as though daring him to touch.

Vorth spoke.

”There are...takeovers that bring justice,” he said around disdain. Smooth as mercury leaking across floor tiles. Spread in rivulets and folded the room inward, quieter.

Elena shuddered behind him. Austin reached for her shoulder, but refrained. It wouldn’t do to appear defensive. Thunderous fragility skittered around him like they were waiting for world to end before making their decision.

Veyra stalked through silence when hotel decided to stop humming for her. Step by deliberate step. Floor tilted under gravity because she demanded attention.

She swallowed light. reyard hugged her body predatorially tight, casting shadows against anything that failed to move with her. Smiled. That ugly, characteristic smile - entropy curated around her teeth.

”I respect your audacity.” She purred around smirk. Equal parts poison dart. ”I can shadow- lien the Grand Meridian’s shadow—hide your legal tracks for enough time that humans can resolve this without interference. Call it condolence if you must—I’ll take acknowledgment of presence; a seat at the core’s consciousness table. Is long as I don’t have to feed.”

Heat recoiled from her entrance several degrees human bodies couldn’t survive. Behind Austin, Elena gritted teeth audibly.

”That will chain a demon of the law to this roof and you call that security.” She tossed objection over shoulder.

Veyra shrugged. Deadly. ”A trade. I’m not looking to crush autonomies- merely ensuring people pay me credit where it’s due. If you find my proposal...” Green eyes climbed closest inch of ceiling until they landed on Austin. Amused.

”I’ll wager my reputation on the building not shifting beneath you,” she continued, amicable. Callous. Veyra tilted her head to glance at jury and witnesses behind Austin’s shoulder. ”All I’m asking is passage through the Meridian during adjudication while you little civilians...figure it out.” Sign.

Predatory glitter pooled in her stare when she finished speaking. Studied him like he was currency in poor standing. ”In return,” she rasped when she spoke again, voice sounding like she had pocketed interest in him. ”I will be granted first rights of consultation with the hotel’s shadow.”

Silence bounced somewhere between lungs and lives. City had gone deathly quiet outside lobby walls, waiting with bated resonance. Below them, buildings thought and considered Austin Veyron foolishness in hungry silence.

Tasted like fear given concrete shape.

Austin could imagine Veyra’s ultimatum painted on his tongue: stagnation for threat; accountability for courthouse supernatural. Knew network cage of futures fracturing in razor clarity behind ultimatum. Could watch Elena daring him to make a choice with just continuation of sentence.

He’d asked the city what justice looked like through humans. Now it asked him to pay the first wage.
