Light Bringer: New World[LitRPG, Fantasy, a very crazy idea]

The first night at Sítio was spent beneath the black tarp stretched between the rubber trees, with Nicole sleeping inside the double cab of the pickup and Dante and Maria settled onto rubber mats over the clearing’s hard-packed dirt.

At six in the morning, the shrill cries of hawks at the tree line woke the camp.

Dante rolled off his mat, pulled on his rubber boots, and went straight to the hood of the truck, where he unrolled a sheet of tracing paper bearing the architectural schematic he had drafted overnight by the light of a dynamo lantern.

Maria emerged from behind the vehicle, toweling her face after a quick plunge into the cold waters of the creek.

She wore worn jeans and a sleeveless gray shirt, wet hair dripping over her broad shoulders.

”What’s the construction plan, Dante?” Maria asked, resting her forearms against the truck’s hood.

”One hundred and twenty square meters of usable floor space,” Dante pointed to the straight lines of the draft with the tip of a carpenter’s pencil. ”A single-story structural masonry warehouse built with six-inch concrete blocks, a four-inch reinforced concrete slab laid over welded wire mesh, and an insulated polyurethane-core steel sandwich roof to blunt the afternoon sun.”

He tapped the graphite against the dead center of the floor plan.

”The dimensional anchor lands dead center in the hall, right where we’ll bolt down the primary workbench. To the right, two private bedrooms and a bathroom feeding into a biodigester septic tank. To the left, an enclosed garage with an industrial roll-up steel door to keep the truck out of the rain.”

Nicole climbed down from the cab, wearing her black hoodie with her dark hair pulled into a high bun, leaving her rounded horn buds bare to the morning forest air.

She walked over to the hood, studying the blueprints with care.

”How long does something like that take to put up with local crews?” Nicole asked.

”Contracting ordinary town masons would take three months,” Dante answered, slipping the pencil into his pocket. ”We aren’t hiring anyone, though. We can’t afford local laborers wandering this parcel and seeing what we haul out of the rifts. We buy the materials from wholesale yards in town and raise the walls ourselves.”

Maria let out a short laugh, popping the knuckles of her heavy hands.

”Three months is the pace of men who carry one bag of cement at a time and clock out at four to drink beer at the dive,” Maria said with her customary swagger. ”With my muscle and your plumb-line brain, we have this roof framed in three days.”

......

The supply runs into Cruzeiro do Sul ate up the entire morning and the early afternoon.

Nicole stayed behind on perimeter watch, armed with a carbon-steel machete to carve a clean ten-foot-wide path between the clearing and the sandy creek bank, working barefoot in the red clay without needing disguises.

Dante and Maria drove into town to Comercial Juruá, the largest building supply distributor along the highway corridor.

Dante ran his debit card through the terminal without hesitation, clearing forty-two thousand reais on a single invoice:

One hundred and fifty bags of cement at fifty kilos apiece.

Six cubic meters of washed river sand.

Eight cubic meters of crushed basalt aggregate.

Forty half-inch rebar rods for grade-beam cages.

Two thousand structural two-cell concrete blocks.

One hundred and forty square meters of insulated galvanized steel roof panels.

A five-thousand-liter polyethylene water cistern and two hundred meters of rigid PVC plumbing.

At two in the afternoon, the distributor’s heavy flatbed truck backed through Mr. Raimundo’s gate, rumbling into the clearing beneath the canopy of the centenary trees.

The driver, a heavy man in a felt hat with a soiled towel looped around his neck, stepped out of the cab and slammed the tin door.

He looked over the empty clearing, then up at the trees and the red clay earth.

”Store delivery only covers dropping cargo at the roadside, boss,” the driver warned, pointing his truck key toward the stacked pallets of cement on the wooden flatbed. ”If you don’t have half a dozen laborers to haul these hundred-pound sacks into the woods, the load is dropping right by the fence.”

Maria took three slow strides forward.

The six-foot-three girl stopped beside the truck bed, stepped onto the rear tire with an easy heave of her legs, and hopped onto the wooden bed.

She dropped into a squat before the first pallet.

She didn’t hoist a single bag to her chest like store hands did.

She drove her arms beneath three stacked bags at once, locked the muscles of her back with [Unshakable Stance], and hoisted the three-hundred-and-thirty-pound load up to her shoulder with the same ease she carried her greatsword.

She walked the length of the flatbed, dropped down to the red earth without her knees wavering a fraction of an inch, and marched into the clearing carrying the three hundred pounds on her shoulder, dumping the cement onto the dry tarp with a dull, heavy thud.

The driver stood frozen beside his front tire.

His jaw slowly dropped open, wide eyes tracking the girl as she returned to the flatbed to scoop up three more sacks in one go.

Dante pulled two fifty-real bills from his leather wallet, pressing the cash into the driver’s limp hand.

”Go ahead and tip the sand and gravel over by the fence, friend,” Dante said with calm reassurance. ”We’ll handle the rest of the dead weight.”

The man signed off on the delivery slip with a shaky hand, engaged the hydraulic dump bed to drop the aggregates with a thunderous rattle of gravel, climbed into the cab, and peeled out down the dirt road so fast his rear tires threw red mud across the fence line.

......

Foundation work began at four in the afternoon.

Where a standard crew would burn three days trenching grade beams with hand shovels and picks, Maria finished the excavation in four hours.

She wielded a heavy-gauge pointed trenching spade, cutting into the red clay with brute leverage that severed thick rubber-tree roots as if they were wet twine. She carved a continuous perimeter trench sixteen inches wide by two feet deep around the entire twelve-hundred-square-foot footprint, shoveling out earth in fifty-pound scoops.

Dante operated the laser level mounted to an aluminum tripod in the center of the site.

With thirty-four Intelligence, the calculations for drainage fall, footing load distribution, and square corners were solved to fractions of a millimeter, requiring zero corrective passes.

Nicole handled the cutting and tying of the rebar.

The huntress worked with a pair of iron pliers and spools of tie wire with startling dexterity in her bare hands.

She bent the half-inch steel rods around the corners with raw grip strength, cinching stirrups with double knots in under ten seconds per joint, leveraging the fine motor coordination of twenty-two Dexterity.

”This is infinitely cleaner than welding armor plate in the Citadel’s smoke,” Nicole remarked, clipping a wire tail with a sharp snap of her pliers. ”The steel bends smooth and the smell of the earth doesn’t scorch your throat.”

”Terrestrial steel carries no volcanic slag impurities,” Dante replied, dumping two bags of cement into the drum of the hundred-gallon gas-powered mixer they had rented in town. ”It’s high-purity rolled structural steel. Tensile strength is uniform along the entire length of the rod.”

The four-stroke engine of the mixer fired up with a rhythmic chug, churning the steel drum as gravel, sand, and clean creek water blended into a dense, gray slurry of concrete.

By ten at night, under the glare of two LED floodlights powered by the diesel generator, the entire reinforced concrete slab was poured.

The floor sat level and smooth, with the steel dowels for the structural columns jutting from the precise corners where the block walls would rise the following morning.

Dante rinsed the shovels and hoes in the running water of the stream, leaving the tools to dry across the grass.

Maria sat on the lowered tailgate of the truck, bare feet caked in dry cement dust, cradling a large bowl of beef-and-potato stew Nicole had prepared over the portable gas stove.

The Sentinel tore through the meal with her customary appetite, but the ache in her shoulders was a clean, honest fatigue that owed nothing to monster venom or the blunt shock of shattered plate.

”The pad is set,” Maria said, waving her metal spoon toward the gray concrete rectangle curing in the center of the clearing. ”Tomorrow morning we lay the blocks, frame the roll-up door, and by afternoon we screw down the insulated panels.”

Nicole sat beside her on the edge of the truck bed with a smaller plate in her lap, watching the canopy of trees outlined against a night sky flecked with millions of clean, white stars.

No sulfur haze obscured the horizon.

No silent crimson lightning sliced the cloud deck, and no iron sentries marched along steel parapets.

The huntress brought a spoonful of stew to her mouth, feeling the deep tranquility of the forest settle over her senses like a protection that no obfuscation talisman had ever managed to provide.

”This ground is ours,” Nicole said softly, the words carrying a quiet finality that seemed to take root in the red dirt.

”It’s ours, girl,” Maria answered, nudging her shoulder against Nicole’s arm. ”Tomorrow we seal these walls so you have your permanent bedroom looking out over the creek.”

Dante sat down on the generator frame with his own bowl, listening to the small diesel engine hum in the steady rhythm that fed the clearing’s lights.

Their terrestrial redoubt was taking physical shape through the raw leverage of their stats and the precision of their calculations, cementing the permanent bridge between the iron empire and the peace of this forgotten forest in the far reaches of northern Brazil.
