Light Bringer: New World[LitRPG, Fantasy, a very crazy idea]

The three-point handwheel on the bronze door locked into the jamb with a crisp clunk of iron seating against lead.

Maria heaved the heavy slab until the latch hit the granite sill, spinning the central wheel two-handed until all three cylindrical deadbolts shot into the side casings, sealing the fifty-square-foot chamber entirely from the stench of sludge and brine in the aqueduct outside.

The control vault was dry. The red hydraulic tile floor held a steady sixty-five degrees, and the draft circulating through the ceiling relief vents was clear of methane pockets and sulfuric acid.

Dante set his conductive chalk kit onto the clean iron workbench, taking a seat on the edge of a wooden tool crate. He pulled the brass thermos from his smaller pack, unscrewed the cap with his right hand, and poured half a cup of activated charcoal water for Maria.

The girl took the metal cup, downed the water in a single draught through her parched throat, and sank down onto the tiled floor, resting her back against the door’s bronze plate. She unbuckled the sling of her forty-pound greatsword, laying the raw steel beside her right leg with a faint crack of relief from her lumbar vertebrae.

”Those lead worms were a chore to chew through with a blade,” Maria remarked, running a cotton towel across her sweaty neck. ”The metal in their hide is soft, the edge bites in without snapping the bone. You have to muscle the iron through just to tear the meat.”

Nicole sat at the far end of the iron workbench ten feet away, her lithe legs crossed, the repeating crossbow resting across her lap. Drawing a rag soaked in fine plant oil, she wiped down the weapon’s flight groove in short, precise strokes, never looking directly at Maria.

”Condensation worms run on a lead alloy tempered with boiler grease,” Nicole said in her calm, clear murmur. ”Engineered to absorb kinetic shock from mining jackhammers. Try cleaving them with a dry chop, the blade rolls and the hide binds to the steel. The trick is targeting the brass seam between rings three and four.”

Maria eyed the girl in the black-scaled coat with an arched eyebrow. ”My blade doesn’t roll, girl. That leaf spring was tempered in Krell’s forge with salamander oil. Cut all three clean in half without blunting the edge.”

Nicole let out a dry smirk through her nose, continuing her work along the crossbow trigger. ”I saw. Thirty-three raw Strength solves nearly anything when you have the mass to drive the stroke.”

Dante watched the dynamic between them with gray eyes, reading every detail of their body language. He pulled the second thermos from his rucksack, unwrapping a bundle of greaseproof paper holding thick cuts of salted peccary steak Maria had prepped back at the townhouse, paired with four crusty malt rolls and a wedge of aged ash cheese. The aroma of clean food and seared fat filled the bronze chamber, sweeping away the cold subterranean chill.

Dante portioned the rations across clean butcher paper: a heavy share for Maria’s two hundred pounds, a modest portion for himself, and a third cut of steak and bread he set at the edge of the workbench, exactly two feet from Nicole’s hand.

The trench huntress stopped her rag on the stock. She stared at the bread and roasted meat on the timber, then lifted her amber slit-pupils to Dante’s placid face. ”I brought my own protein concentrate bars,” Nicole said, her voice neutral, edged with defense.

”Protein concentrate bars taste like mineral soap and carry zero percent fresh tallow,” Dante replied with pragmatic logic, chewing his roll. ”You’ll need actual calories in your legs if you intend to sprint across steam conduits tomorrow morning while Maria tanks the strike from that serpent’s skull. Eat the meat.”

Nicole held his gaze for three unbroken seconds. Her ingrained suspicion, forged through four years of survival in the foundry underbelly, fought against the rich scent of pan-fried bread right in front of her nose. She released a short breath, tucked her rag into her scale coat, and took the food in her gloved hand.

Her first bite was measured, but on the second mouthful hunger overtook caution. She chewed with the rapid, methodical cadence of someone who had learned to clear a plate in under two minutes between Legion sweeps, washing it down with a draft from her leather canteen. ”Well seasoned,” she conceded in an undertone, brushing crumbs from her glove. ”Authentic mountain rock salt.”

”Hunted it yesterday afternoon out in the mire,” Maria answered from the floor, shaving off a slice of cheese with the tip of her boning knife. ”Level 24 ferrite peccary. Hide on that thing felt like street cobblestone, but the ribs turned tender after two hours over the stove plate.”

A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation.

The tension between them eased by a fraction over the shared meal, though their tactical distance remained firmly staked across the red tiles. Dante propped his notebook on his lap, taking up his graphite pencil to organize telemetry for the morning’s assault.

He sketched the layout of the Expansion Reservoir onto the grid paper: the three-hundred-foot central lake, the scrap island of locomotive hulls in the middle, the cracked boiler where the serpent rested, and the lead blast door of the Fourth Division vault anchored to the cavern’s rear wall.

”The Slag Serpent carries eight hundred and fifty hit points across sixty-five feet of length,” Dante laid out the analysis, indicating key topographical markers with his pencil. ”At Level 28, the density of its dorsal armor plate of naval steel and ferrite blunts slashing and piercing damage by at least forty percent. Attempting to crack that upper shell head-on means hammering metal for two hours until our stamina bottoms out.”

Nicole secured her crossbow in its thigh holster and stepped closer to the bench, leaning over to review the sketch. ”The vulnerability isn’t on its skull,” she pointed a finger toward the serpent’s underbelly on the grid. ”Naval plate sheathes only its spine and lateral flanks. The ventral belly, the tissue dragging over the ore bed, is made of flexible reddish chitin scales. The hide has to remain elastic so it can swallow whole automaton chassis.”

”And how do we flip a sixty-five-foot, ten-ton serpent onto its back?” Maria asked from the floor, eyes fixed on the ceiling.

”We don’t flip the entire beast,” Dante answered, calculating spell vectors. ”We exploit the terrain of the scrap island. Two twenty-foot structural iron girders lie toppled diagonally right at the mouth of the heated boiler.” He drew two straight strokes, shaping an inverted V over the nest breach.

”Nicole baits the serpent’s strike with silver bolts driven into the thermal pits on its snout,” Dante detailed the route. ”The serpent will drive straight between the two girders to close the distance. As its head clears the gap, the girth of its torso will force it to rear up over the scrap wreckage to keep from wedging in the channel.”

He looked at Maria. ”The exact second it arches its throat over the girder, its soft red belly is exposed six feet off the deck. That is where you hit it with [Seismic Rift] and [Devastating Cleaver].”

Maria flashed a wide, vicious grin in the vault’s gloom, her eyes glinting at the prospect of a clean strike. ”I’ll gut that snake from collar to tail before its jaws can snap shut on stone.”

”What if it whips its tail to crush Maria from behind?” Nicole asked, her amber eyes weighing the cramped quarters of the iron island. ”The tail packs five tons of pure ferrite mass. One whip from that tail snaps a concrete pylon in half.”

”If the tail swings, I trigger [Forced Transposition],” Dante tapped his pencil on the center of the diagram. ”I have sixty-five Mana budgeted exclusively for that contingency. I pull Maria out of the strike vector and set her three feet off the serpent’s blind flank in under a second.”

Nicole studied Dante with quiet respect she did not attempt to put into words. The precision with which he balanced cooldown windows, effective class ranges, and physical thresholds was something she had seen only in high-command staff reports inside the Citadel. ”The plan is airtight,” Nicole admitted, folding her arms across her scaled coat. ”I have six white phosphorus bolts in my bandolier. If I blind its heat pits at the opening bell, the beast won’t track lateral motion for thirty seconds.”

”Then the run is locked,” Dante packed his notebook into his rucksack, zipping the canvas shut with a sharp pull. ”Now we split the watch.” He checked his wristwatch, reading ten at night on surface time.

”Six hours of mandatory rest for everyone,” Dante set the terms. ”Two three-hour shifts. I take the first three while you two sleep. At one in the morning Nicole relieves me, and I sleep until four. At four sharp we unbolt the bronze door and march on the reservoir.”

Maria did not argue. Folding her canvas pack into a pillow against the red tiles, she pulled the cotton blanket over her frame and rolled onto her side, face turned toward the door threshold, right hand inches from the greatsword’s hilt. In under three minutes, her breathing settled into that heavy, rhythmic cadence marking accelerated cellular recovery fueled by thirty-two Constitution.

Nicole settled into the corner of the iron workbench, pulling her leather cowl low over her eyes, leaning against the granite wall. Keeping her arms folded across her chest and her repeating crossbow docked at her hip, she slipped into the vigilant half-sleep of someone who had spent years bunking in sewer conduits.

Dante remained in the oak chair in the center of the room. He rested his elbows on his knees, lacing his fingers together while tuning his hearing to the muffled acoustics beyond the four-inch bronze door. Every three minutes, the hollow echo of a distant leak dripped onto the stone trench outside: plop... plop... plop.

The basilisk bone plate housing the Primordial Iron Core lay cold and flat against his spine, venting excess ambient Mana straight into the floor tiles without projecting a whisper of magical resonance. The plan was forged. Rations and gear were budgeted, their retreat line was clear, and the beast carrying eight hundred and fifty hit points remained asleep over the warm boiler four hundred yards away.

Dante looked down at Maria’s resting silhouette on the floor, then over to Nicole’s lean form in the corner, drawing in the dry air of their bunker with absolute certainty that morning would mark their definitive breakthrough into the next tier of power.
