Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 185: Chapter 180: The Fading One’s Hunt

Location: Mid Realm - Thornwood Expanse (Primordial Forest)

Time: Day 228/228 - 18 Voidmarch, 9938 AZI

Realm: Mid Realm

The realm crossing deposited Voresh at the forest’s edge precisely as calculated. The obsidian disc, an expensive one-way teleport talisman, crumbled to ash in his palm.

No disorientation. No nausea. Just the shift from the demon realm’s volcanic warmth to the Mid Realm’s winter cold.

At least Mid Realm transit required no Realm Seal. Apexblight tier crossed without cultivation damage—Ala’s boundary protections only triggered for Eternalpyre cultivators attempting to descend. Divine restriction preventing overwhelmingly powerful beings from disrupting the lower realms.

Strategic advantage: Mission parameters didn’t require wasting demon realm’s limited Realm Seal resources.

Voresh stood at the forest’s edge, copper eyes scanning primordial growth that stretched endlessly before him. Forty-degree temperature drop from demon realm warmth registered as data—Apexblight cultivation adjusting automatically, bronze-tinted skin maintaining core temperature without conscious effort.

Three seconds. Assess environment. Continue mission.

Trees five hundred to two thousand years old based on trunk diameter. Canopy density extreme—minimal sunlight penetration. Ambient essence moderate to high, primarily Verdant. Ground-level temperature thirty-seven degrees. Humidity sixty percent.

Voresh walked forward.

The forest swallowed him within twenty steps.

***

Thirty thousand years of scout training reduced wilderness to tactical data.

Ironbark trunk four meters diameter—bark thickness sufficient to resist Blazecrowned strikes. Shadowvines spiraling counterclockwise—avoid direct contact, paralytic properties. Glowcap mushroom cluster at root base—bioluminescent navigation marker, poison if consumed. Game trail heading northeast—deer-sized tracks, twelve hours old.

His copper-brown hair—streaked black and white from three-essence affinity—caught on a low branch. Voresh freed himself with efficient movement, no wasted motion. Six-foot-four frame navigated undergrowth that would slow smaller humanoids.

Beauty should register here. Ancient forest, primordial majesty, trees older than most civilizations.

Instead: Light penetration seventeen percent. Essence concentration favorable for Verdant cultivation. Predator concealment advantages significant. Tactical terrain assessment complete.

Voresh’s hand moved to his throat—unconscious habit formed over millennia. High collar concealed the Vor’kesh beneath, that sacred tattoo marking every demon’s life. The vine would be black as charred wood if anyone looked. Ancient beyond comprehension.

And one leaf. Just one. Clinging to existence through whatever grace kept it attached.

When it fell, he had days. Maybe a week. Then the transformation would begin—demon dying, devil emerging, soul destroyed forever unless he performed Kael’thros first.

The honor death was already planned. Method chosen. Location selected. Ritual words prepared.

This mission bought time. Ren’s final gift to his mentor—purpose before the end.

Find new Prophetess. Offer protection. Prevent Sharlin from controlling prophecy.

Strategic value for demon realm. Tactical necessity. Acceptable final task.

Voresh continued deeper into the forest. Breath misting in cold air—visual indicator of thermal differential, useful for tracking warm-blooded targets. His movements left minimal traces. Apexblight stealth training rendered him functionally invisible to anyone below Blazecrowned awareness.

The cold settled into his bones. Most humans would shiver. Voresh’s cultivation maintained stability, but cold registered as pressure against bronze skin, moisture condensing in copper-brown hair.

Data. Environmental factors. Continue.

Movement. Forty meters left, partially obscured by ironbark.

Voresh stopped.

Large quadruped. Shoulder height is one point two meters. Gray-black fur, winter-thick. Pack predator based on posture. Dire wolf. Flamewrought tier from essence signature.

Not alone. Pack structure indicated six to ten individuals. Alpha would be Inferno-tempered, possibly low Blazecrowned.

The wolf’s yellow eyes fixed on him. Calculating. Measuring threat.

Voresh stood motionless. No aggressive stance. No defensive posture. Just existence.

Three more wolves materialized from the undergrowth. Flanking positions. Standard tactics.

He could kill them in under thirty seconds. Apexblight versus Flamewrought wasn’t remotely fair. Voidshadow essence would slice through essence-reinforced bodies like smoke through paper.

But killing served no purpose. Dead wolves meant noise, blood scent, and attracted larger predators. Mission was reconnaissance, not combat.

More importantly: Every death generated death energy. Energy that would seep into his Vor’kesh. Corrupt the vine further. Could make the last leaf fall.

Thirty thousand years of killing. Millions dead by his hand across countless battlefields. Each one had cost him. Stolen pieces of his soul, leaf by leaf, until only one remained.

He didn’t know which death would be his last. Could be the next kill. Could be a hundred kills from now. The mathematics were uncertain, variables too complex.

Inefficient to risk mission failure over an unknown probability.

Voresh released a controlled pulse of Voidshadow essence. Not attack. Not a threat. Just presence.

The wolves froze. Intelligence sufficient to recognize overwhelming force.

The alpha emerged—larger, scarred, Inferno-tempered essence radiating authority. Its gaze met Voresh’s copper eyes.

Predator to predator. Understanding without words.

The alpha huffed once. Pack turned as unit. Melted into the forest without sound.

Encounter resolved: Zero casualties. Zero essence expenditure. Zero delay. Zero risk to the final leaf.

Optimal outcome.

Voresh resumed walking, acknowledging the efficiency. Data point recorded. Mission continues.

***

Three kilometers later, the forest changed.

Voresh noticed it immediately—essence corruption. Faint but present. Voidshadow tainted with something wrong. Not natural shadow. Not cultivated darkness.

Hell essence.

He stopped. Scanned environment with heightened awareness.

The corruption spread from the northeast. Subtle. Most cultivators below Blazecrowned wouldn’t detect it. But Voresh had fought in four Zartonesh invasions. Had tracked Hell-corrupted war parties across three realms. Recognized signature instantly.

Demon beasts. Corrupted by Hell realm influence.

Standard threat in primordial forests near Hell rifts. Mindless aggression. Stronger than equivalent spirit beasts. Couldn’t be reasoned with.

Must be killed.

Voresh’s jaw tightened fractionally. First emotional response in hours—not fear, not anger, just recognition of unwanted necessity.

Killing them was unavoidable. Demon beasts attacked on sight. No negotiation possible. And the mission required continuing northeast, directly into the corrupted zone.

He could detour. Circle around the corrupted area, avoid combat entirely.

But a detour meant hours lost. Days potentially. Mission timeline already tight. Four to six weeks to search sixty villages systematically. Delays compounded.

Tactical assessment: Proceed through the corruption zone. Eliminate demon beasts efficiently. Minimize death energy generation through precise kills.

Check Vor’kesh afterward. Assess leaf stability.

If it fell... perform Kael’thros immediately. Die here in the primordial forest. Honorable enough location.

Acceptable risk.

Voresh drew Voidshadow essence into his meridians. Not full combat readiness—that would waste energy. Just preparation. A blade of condensed shadow forming along his right forearm, invisible to normal sight.

He continued northeast.

The corruption intensified. Ambient Verdant essence is being strangled by Hell taint. Plants near the corruption source were withering—leaves blackening, bark cracking, roots dying. Even the ironbark trees—normally resistant to essence damage—showed signs of decay. Bark peeling in strips. Heartwood exposed and rotting.

Hell rift was close. Probably within five kilometers. Small one, barely stable, but enough to corrupt local fauna.

Then he saw them.

Three shadowfiends. Corrupted wolves, twisted by Hell essence into something barely recognizable. Fur matted black with ichor that dripped onto the forest floor, burning through vegetation where it landed. Eyes burning red with mindless hunger. Voidshadow auras crackling around bodies in diseased patterns that hurt to look at—wrong geometries, impossible angles.

Flamewrought tier base, but corruption enhanced them. Stronger, faster, more resilient than normal wolves. Aggressive. No intelligence remaining—just programmed to kill anything living, spread corruption further.

They noticed Voresh simultaneously. Heads snapping toward him with precision that indicated hive-mind coordination. Hell rifts did that sometimes—connected corrupted beasts into a rudimentary network.

Charged without hesitation. No pack tactics. No strategy. Just overwhelming aggression.

Voresh didn’t move until they closed to fifteen meters.

Then he did.

Thirty thousand years of combat experience compressed into three seconds of perfect execution.

Voidshadow blade extended. Right arm slashed horizontally. First shadowfiend died mid-leap, head separating from body with surgical precision. Minimal essence expenditure. Clean kill.

Left hand formed a Terracore spike. Launched it at shadowfiend two’s chest. Pierced heart, destroyed Crucible Core. Instant death. Corpse collapsed mid-charge.

Third shadowfiend adjusted trajectory, leaping high. Attempting aerial attack.

Voresh’s Galebreath essence accelerated his movement. Sidestepped left. Voidshadow blade angled upward. Shadowfiend impaled itself on condensed darkness. Dead before hitting the ground.

Combat duration: Two point seven seconds. Three kills. Zero injuries sustained.

Efficient.

Voresh stood among corpses, breathing steady. Copper eyes scanned for additional threats. Forest quiet except for ichor dripping from the Voidshadow blade.

He dismissed the blade. Essence dissipating back into his Crucible Core.

Then froze.

Death energy.

He could feel it—three distinct streams of corruption flowing from shadowfiend corpses. Seeking his Vor’kesh like iron to a lodestone. Hell-tainted death energy was worse than normal kills. More potent. More corrosive.

The energy slammed into his throat.

Voresh’s hand shot to his collar. Pulled it down. Exposed the Vor’kesh to cold air.

He didn’t need to see it. Thirty thousand years of cultivation had honed his essence perception to microscopic precision. The Vor’kesh wasn’t just a visible tattoo—it was a spiritual manifestation, connected directly to his soul. He could feel every detail.

The vine: Black as charred obsidian. Carbonized. Petrified. Ancient beyond comprehension.

And there, left side just below his jaw: One small leaf. Green. Alive.

Barely.

Death energy slammed into the vine—three distinct streams of Hell-tainted corruption flowing from shadowfiend corpses. He felt it seeping through microscopic channels in the spiritual tattoo. Dark tendrils wrapping around the leaf’s stem. Testing connection. Pulling.

The leaf trembled. He felt it through essence perception as clearly as if watching with physical eyes. Stem bending under pressure. Edges curling inward.

Voresh’s essence sense catalogued every detail with clinical precision:

Stem integrity: Seventy-three percent estimated. Down from eighty-one percent before combat.

Leaf surface vitality: Green coloring holding, but corruption creeping from the edges. Approximately six percent degradation.

Attachment strength: Weakening. Death energy adding mass to the corruption already accumulated over thirty millennia.

The leaf didn’t fall.

But it came close. Through his spiritual perception, Voresh felt the stem strain, felt death energy saturate vine tissue, felt divine grace—whatever force maintained that final leaf—holding by threads.

But margins had narrowed substantially. Another few kills like that—Hell-corrupted kills especially—and stem would snap. Leaf would detach. Transformation would begin.

How many more kills before failure? Unknown. Variables too complex for accurate calculation:

• Hell corruption factor: 2.3x normal death energy

• Stem degradation rate: Non-linear, accelerating

• Divine grace maintaining attachment: Unpredictable

•Accumulated corruption from thirty millennia: Near saturation

Conservative estimate: Five to ten normal kills remaining. Two to three Hell-corrupted kills.

Aggressive estimate: Next kill could be fatal.

Mathematical certainty: Every death brought him exponentially closer to the end, not linearly.

Voresh pulled his collar back up. Covered the Vor’kesh. Stood motionless for seventeen seconds while death energy finished integrating into the vine structure.

The trembling stopped. Leaf stabilized. Still attached.

Still alive.

For now.

He resumed walking. Northeast. Through the corruption zone. Past shadowfiend corpses already dissolving into ichor-soaked earth.

No satisfaction at successful combat. No relief at survival. No fear of approaching death.

Just data: Three kills. Leaf still attached. Margin for error reduced. Killing now an absolute last resort.

Next encounter with demon beasts would require a different approach. Evasion if possible. Incapacitation without killing if necessary. Only lethal force if no alternative existed.

Because he didn’t know which death would be his last.

And dying before completing the mission was unacceptable.

***

By midday, Voresh had covered thirty kilometers in an expanding spiral pattern.

Standard scout methodology. Establish baseline terrain understanding. Identify major landmarks. Map essence concentration zones. Note spirit beast territories. Search for signs of humanoid habitation.

The primordial forest was vast—five hundred thousand square miles. Half a million mixed breeds are distributed across hundreds of small villages.

Finding one girl—young, prophetic abilities, likely hiding—required a systematic approach.

Tactical assessment: Circular grove of deliberately arranged trees indicated natural formation with extreme improbability, or intentional shaping. Given Oracle’s vision showing this location, likely significant. Search priority maximum.

Problem: No circular groves identified yet. Forest too dense for aerial survey. Ground visibility limited to fifty meters. Systematic search of five hundred thousand square miles would take years.

Solution: Narrow parameters.

New Prophetess would need protection, resources, concealment, community. Cross-reference with terrain. Circular groves rare. Outcast villages numbered approximately two hundred. Eliminate villages too exposed, too close to borders, or too small to support refugees.

Remaining candidates: Sixty to eighty villages.

Time required: Four to six weeks, assuming standard search patterns.

Acceptable timeframe. Voresh’s last leaf would likely hold that long.

If it held.

The shadowfiend combat had demonstrated margin for error was smaller than calculated. Hell-corrupted kills generated significantly more death energy than normal. Three shadowfiends had nearly stripped his last leaf.

New calculation: Avoid all combat if remotely possible. Mission success probability decreased substantially if forced into additional fights.

Voresh adjusted his search pattern. Wider berth around essence corruption signatures. More cautious approach to spirit beast territories. Increased stealth protocols.

Survival until mission completion was now the primary concern.

And if the leaf fell during the search?

Perform Kael’thros. Die honorably. Ren would send a replacement scout.

Simple. Clean. No emotional complexity required.

***

Late afternoon brought a stream cutting through the ancient growth section.

Water clear, cold, flowing northwest. Torrent essence concentration moderate. Shadow trout visible—population healthy, unpolluted source. Tactical value: navigation landmark, fresh water, tracking route for local fauna.

Voresh knelt at the stream’s edge. Filled canteen with mechanical precision. Drank the calculated amount for hydration maintenance. Scanned surroundings for threats.

The forest here was darker. Canopy so thick, twilight dominated. Glowcap mushrooms created constellation patterns across root systems.

Aesthetically impressive by objective standards.

Registered as: Navigational advantage. Light source for stealth operations. Potential alchemical resource.

Voresh stood. Continued northeast along the stream bank. Water attracted settlements—humanoid and beast. Following the waterway increased probability of finding an outcast village.

Logical. Tactically sound.

Hours passed. Forest cycled through variations—older growth giving way to younger sections, elevation changing, and essence concentrations shifting.

Voresh’s internal map expanded. Photographic memory cataloging: Ironbark with lightning scar at coordinates X. Shadowvine barrier at Y. Ancient stone formation suggesting pre-Sundering site at Z.

Data accumulated. Pattern recognition processing continuously.

His hand touched his collar twice more during the afternoon. Checking. Confirming the leaf remained attached. Both times: Still there. Stem holding. Death energy from shadowfiends is integrated but not fatal.

Not yet.

Sufficient progress for day one.

***

Sunset approached when Voresh found a boot print.

Partial impression in soft soil near a stream. Adult male based on depth and stride. Eighteen to twenty-four hours old. Direction: Northeast.

He knelt. Examined closer.

Sole pattern hand-crafted. Leather, reinforced stitching. Not kingdom manufacture—too crude. Outcast work. Essence residue faint Verdant, Flamewrought tier. Cultivator or recent proximity to a concentrated source.

Combat indicators: Normal stride, no injury or urgency. Weapon weight distribution suggested a blade worn on left hip.

Scout or hunter. Outcast community member on routine patrol.

Voresh stood. Followed tracks.

Standard procedure: Observe before contact. Assess threat, gather intelligence, determine connection to target.

Tracks led deeper into the forest. Through dense undergrowth, around massive ironbark trunks, past shadowvine clusters. Tracker knew the terrain intimately. Definitely a local.

Voresh maintained a fifty-meter separation. Silent movement, Apexblight stealth rendering him functionally invisible. Thousands of years reduced tracking to autonomic function.

The tracker stopped.

Voresh froze instantly. Forty-seven meters distant, partially obscured by an ancient oak.

Target crouched at the tree base. Male, mid-twenties, human-elf mix from slightly pointed ears. Flamewrought tier confirmed. Armed with a sword and a hunting knife. Leather armor, well-maintained. Alert posture.

Gathering herbs. Bloodroot from the distinctive red leaves. Medicinal plant, valuable for healing. Grew near death sites.

Tactical data: Outcast village had a skilled herbalist. Bloodroot collection indicated regular injuries or trade.

The scout finished gathering. Stood. Scanned surroundings with competent wariness.

Voresh remained perfectly still. Breathing controlled. Essence signature suppressed. Blending into shadows.

The young man’s gaze passed over Voresh’s position. No recognition. No awareness.

Excellent skill differential demonstration.

Scout departed northeast. Steady pace. Returning to the settlement.

Voresh waited five minutes. Gave the tracker sufficient lead. Then followed.

Village with a skilled herbalist, trained warriors, and knowledge of bloodroot locations. Sophisticated enough for patrols. Isolated enough to avoid kingdom attention.

Possible Prophetess connection. Worth investigation.

Minimum: Intelligence gathering. Maximum: Direct lead.

Voresh shadowed the scout through the darkening forest. Professional distance maintained. No emotional investment—success or failure equally acceptable. Just mission parameters followed with mechanical precision.

Duty remained. Honor persisted. Purpose continued.

Voresh walked through the primordial forest as twilight deepened. Copper eyes scanned the environment with detached efficiency. Bronze skin showed no expression despite thirty thousand years of weathering his features into something ancient and fading.

Inside, where emotions should reside?

Frozen void. Ice where fire once burned. Mechanical duty replacing passion.

One leaf.

One combat encounter that nearly stripped it.

Weeks of searching ahead, where any fight could be his last.

Acceptable.

The only things remaining were data, mission, and duty.

Nothing more required.

Nothing more possible.
