Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 155: Chapter 150: Silver Tears and Restoration

Location: Dark Forest Glade → Pavilion Nexus Medical Bay

Time: Day 583/213 (Subjective/Actual) - Continuous

Realm: Lower Realm (Doha)

Space rippled at the edge of the glade.

Isha materialized first—translucent kitsune form blazing with panic, nine tails lashing in agitation. The emergency extraction had failed. The talisman that should have pulled Jayde to safety had activated but couldn’t complete the dimensional transfer.

Something was blocking it.

Which meant she was still here. Still in the glade. Still—

The ward stones pulsed around the perimeter, still active, still maintaining their protective barrier.

[Down!] Isha commanded, and the formations collapsed instantly. The shimmering barrier dissolved, divine-grade protections deactivating at the Divine Tome’s authority.

From the undergrowth beyond where the barrier had been, a small kitten form burst forward.

Takara raced across the grass with speed that shouldn’t be possible for something so tiny, finally free of the barrier that had trapped him throughout the entire battle. He skidded to a halt several meters from the blood-soaked area, blue eyes wide with horror.

***

[JAYDE!]

Yinxin’s mental scream tore through the silence like a blade.

The silver dragon materialized and surged forward on legs that trembled from exhaustion, wings dragging on the ground, every muscle screaming from an hour of brutal combat. But none of that mattered. Nothing mattered except the small, broken body sprawled in the grass ahead.

Blood everywhere. So much blood. Pooling beneath Jayde’s face where it poured from her nose and ears. Staining her training clothes crimson. Painting the grass in colors that should never come from a living person.

(Please no, please no, please—)

Yinxin’s massive head lowered to Jayde’s crumpled form, nudging gently with her snout. Desperate for a response. Desperate for movement, for breath, for anything that meant the child was still alive.

Nothing.

Jayde’s chest barely moved. Breaths so shallow they were almost nonexistent. Her face was ghostly pale beneath the blood, skin waxy like a corpse. Meridians visible through her flesh—not glowing with power but dark, shredded, catastrophically damaged.

Through their bond, Yinxin could feel it.

The connection growing weaker. Thinner. Like a rope fraying strand by strand.

Jayde was dying.

[No,] Yinxin whimpered, the sound breaking in ways a dragon’s mental voice shouldn’t be able to break. [No no no, you can’t die, you promised the wyrmlings we’d come back, you promised—]

Tears began streaming down the silver dragon’s face.

Not delicate drops. Not gentle moisture. Actual sobbing, grief pouring out in torrents as Yinxin pressed her head against Jayde’s unresponsive body and felt their bond growing thinner with each passing heartbeat.

This was her fault. All of it. She’d asked Jayde to protect her during the spell. Asked this fifteen-year-old child to endure psionic assault from thousands of parasites. Asked her to stand between Yinxin and death, and now—

Now Jayde was paying the price.

[Please don’t leave me,] Yinxin begged, pressing closer. [The wyrmlings need you. Reiko needs you. I need you. We’re partners, remember? Partners don’t—]

The bond thinned further.

Jayde’s breathing stuttered.

And Yinxin’s grief transformed into something beyond words. A sound emerged from her throat—not mental, but vocalized. A keening wail that echoed across the glade, primal and heartbroken and utterly devastating.

The cry of a dragon watching family die.

***

Reiko appeared beside them, shadowbeast form trembling. Through their contract bond, he could feel what Yinxin felt. Could sense Jayde’s life slipping away like water through cupped hands.

[What do we do?] The young shadowbeast’s mental voice was small, terrified. [She’s dying, she’s dying, what do we—]

[I don’t know!] Yinxin sobbed, her tears falling onto Jayde’s blood-stained face. [I don’t know, I don’t know, I—]

One of her tears landed on Jayde’s lips.

Silver liquid, luminous even in the fading light. It touched the child’s mouth and—

Yinxin’s head snapped up.

Tears.

Silver Dragon tears.

Memory crashed over her like a tidal wave. Ancient knowledge passed down through bloodlines. Her mother’s voice from centuries ago, teaching young Yinxin about her heritage:

Our tears hold miracles, child. Our blood can heal wounds that should be fatal. We are Silver Dragons—protectors, healers, guardians. When someone you love is dying, your essence can pull them back from the edge.

”How did I forget?” Yinxin’s actual voice—not mental sending but vocalized words—cracked with desperate hope. ”How did I forget?”

She moved with sudden purpose. Wiped tears from her own face with one paw, careful to catch the silver droplets. Positioned herself over Jayde’s face and let the tears fall directly into the child’s mouth.

One drop. Two. Three.

”Please work,” Yinxin whispered, switching back to vocalized speech because mental sending felt too fragile for this moment. ”Please please please—”

[What are you doing?!] Reiko’s mental scream was pure panic. [Stop, you’re—]

”Saving her,” Yinxin said, and there was steel beneath the grief now. Determination.

She extended one paw. Looked at the soft pad where silver scales gave way to vulnerable flesh. The place where her massive claws extended from, protected by thinner skin than the rest of her armored body.

Yinxin bit down on her own paw.

Hard.

Fangs sank into flesh. Silver blood welled up—luminous, shimmering with essence that was part dragon, part Radiance, part Torrent, part Terracore. All the power of her bloodline concentrated in liquid form.

It hurt. Gods, it hurt.

But pain didn’t matter.

Yinxin pressed her bleeding paw against Jayde’s mouth, forcing blood between the child’s lips. Tilted Jayde’s head back slightly so the precious liquid would flow down her throat rather than spilling out.

”Drink,” the dragon commanded, her voice thick with tears and blood and desperate hope. ”You drink this right now, Jayde. You drink, and you live because I did not watch you survive impossible things just to lose you to the aftermath.”

More blood flowed. Silver essence pouring into Jayde’s mouth, down her throat, spreading through her body with each weak heartbeat.

***

[STOP IT!] Reiko’s mental voice cracked with anguish. [You’re hurting yourself, you’re bleeding, STOP—]

The young shadowbeast lunged forward, trying to physically pull Yinxin away from Jayde. His small form crashed against the dragon’s massive leg, bouncing off harmlessly but trying again with desperate strength.

[She’s dying anyway!] Reiko sobbed through their bond. [Don’t hurt yourself for nothing, please, I can’t lose both of you, I CAN’T—]

Several meters away, Takara watched in his kitten form with mounting horror.

The ancient Lightning Panthera had finally made it through the ward barrier—Isha’s arrival had freed him from his prison—but he’d arrived too late to do anything except witness the aftermath.

Five thousand years of existence, and he’d never felt more helpless.

He’d failed. Made a rookie mistake that had trapped him outside while Jayde nearly died. And now all he could do was watch as a dragon bled herself trying to save the child while a baby shadowbeast sobbed in anguish.

But Yinxin didn’t stop. Kept pressing her bleeding paw to Jayde’s mouth, kept forcing blood down the child’s throat, kept trying with single-minded determination that transcended reason.

Partners didn’t give up on each other.

Ever.

***

Green materialized beside them—the healer’s eyes widening as she took in the scene.

Jayde sprawled in blood-soaked grass. Yinxin bleeding from self-inflicted wounds while forcing her essence into the child’s mouth. Reiko trying desperately to pull the dragon away, sobbing incoherently through their bond.

Green moved.

Not toward Jayde—toward Reiko.

The healer dropped to her knees beside the young shadowbeast and pulled him into a tight embrace despite his struggles.

”Stop fighting,” Green said quietly, her usually clinical voice gentled by compassion. ”She’s not hurting Jayde. She’s saving her.”

[She’s bleeding herself!] Reiko wailed. [She’s dying too and—]

”Silver Dragon blood is miraculous,” Green explained, holding the shadowbeast firmly as he tried to lunge toward Yinxin again. ”Their tears can heal wounds that should be fatal. Their blood can pull someone back from death’s edge if given quickly enough. Yinxin knows what she’s doing.”

[But—]

”Look.” Green turned Reiko’s head toward Jayde. ”Watch.”

Through tear-blurred vision, Reiko could see it.

Jayde’s breathing. Slightly deeper now. Slightly stronger. The waxy pallor of her skin gaining the barest hint of color. The bond between them—that fraying rope connection—stopped thinning.

Held steady.

Began, impossibly, to strengthen.

”She’s stabilizing,” Green confirmed, her professional assessment overlaying the scene. ”Meridian damage is still catastrophic, but the bleeding has stopped internally. Her Crucible Core is no longer in immediate danger of collapse. The Silver Dragon essence is working.”

Yinxin sobbed with relief, pressing her bleeding paw harder against Jayde’s mouth. Forcing more blood in. More healing. More life when death had seemed inevitable.

***

Then Jayde’s body began to glow.

Everyone froze.

Not gentle illumination. Not soft light. Blazing radiance that made them all shield their eyes as Jayde’s entire form lit up like a star contained in human flesh.

Red light from her core—Inferno essence blazing. That made sense, at least. Her first seal was open.

But there was blue light too.

Blue.

Swirling around her in patterns that looked almost... liquid. Water essence. Flowing over her unconscious body in mesmerizing spirals that shouldn’t—couldn’t—exist.

[What—] Yinxin’s mental voice strangled with shock. [That’s Torrent essence. But her second seal is still locked. How is—]

”I don’t know,” Green said, and those three words carried more alarm than anything else she’d said. The healer who’d lived for centuries, who’d seen countless cultivation phenomena—she had no explanation.

Even unconscious—perhaps especially unconscious, without her mind fighting whatever was happening—Jayde seemed to be in agony. Her body convulsed. Muscles spasming. Face contorting with pain that she couldn’t vocalize because she was barely breathing.

Green moved forward immediately, healer’s instincts overriding caution.

She got within two meters of Jayde’s glowing form and was thrown back by an invisible force.

The healer hit the ground hard, rolling to her feet, her emerald eyes wide with shock.

”There’s a barrier,” Green said, voice tight. ”Something is rejecting external contact. I can’t reach her to assess—”

Ember Qi from the surrounding area began flowing toward Jayde.

Not slowly. Not gently. Like water rushing toward a drain, ambient essence from the entire glade converged on the unconscious child. Pulled into her damaged meridians despite the fact that her channels were shredded and shouldn’t be able to contain power at all.

[Her cultivation is rising,] Isha announced, his translucent form blazing with alarm. [Ashborn to Sparkforged. But that’s impossible—meridians that damaged can’t circulate Qi, can’t advance tiers. What is—]

The kitsune’s mental voice cut off abruptly.

Strands began forming in the air around Jayde.

Fine threads of essence—silver and blue weaving together like silk being spun from nothing. Layer after layer appearing, wrapping around her glowing body with methodical precision.

Within seconds, Jayde was completely enclosed.

A cocoon of Torrent essence wrapped around her, pulsing with power that made the air feel heavy. Protective. Shielding whatever was happening inside from outside interference.

Silence crashed over the glade.

Everyone stared at the cocoon with expressions ranging from shock to outright fear.

***

[What is happening?!] Yinxin’s mental voice hit notes between awe and terror. [Why is there Torrent essence when her seal is locked?! Why is she in a—a—]

[It looks like a caterpillar cocoon,] Reiko said in a very small voice, pressing harder against Green’s side. [Like when the silk moths in the sanctuary transform. But bigger. And scary.]

”Metamorphosis,” Green said slowly, the word clinical but her tone anything but. She approached the cocoon carefully, staying just outside the rejection range. ”Some kind of physical transformation. But I’ve never seen essence form a protective barrier like this during cultivation advancement. This isn’t a normal breakthrough.”

[My bond is strengthening,] Isha said suddenly, his nine tails going completely still. [Wait. It was weakening when she was dying, but now—it’s growing stronger. Much stronger. Jayde isn’t dying anymore.]

He paused, translucent form flickering with confusion and alarm.

[And the emergency extraction failed. The talisman activated—I felt it trying to pull her to the Pavilion—but something blocked it. Something in her essence refused the dimensional transfer. I’ve never seen anything interfere with Pavilion teleportation protocols before.]

[Mine too,] Yinxin confirmed, tears—this time of joy mixed with confusion—streaming down her silver face. [She’s alive. Whatever is happening in there, she’s healing. Her life force is stabilizing.]

[I can feel it too,] Reiko added, his young voice trembling between relief and fear. [But what’s going to come out of that cocoon? Is it still going to be Jayde?]

The question hung in the air like a sword.

Green stared at the pulsing cocoon, at the blue and silver essence swirling in patterns that defied everything she knew about cultivation. At the unconscious child inside who was undergoing a transformation that none of them understood.

”I don’t know,” the healer said quietly, honestly. ”I’ve seen cultivators breakthrough to new tiers. Seen essence transformations. Seen meridian reconstructions. But this? This is something else entirely. The Torrent essence appearing when her seal should prevent it. The cocoon forming to protect the transformation. The way ambient Qi is being drawn in...”

She looked at Isha, eyes demanding answers the kitsune might have.

”What is she?”

Isha’s translucent form flickered with uncertainty—an expression the ancient Divine Tome rarely showed.

[I... don’t know,] he admitted, and the confession clearly disturbed him. [The seal on her second essence tier shouldn’t allow Torrent to manifest. Her meridians are too damaged to circulate power. None of this should be possible. I need to consult the archives. Search through everything I have on essence seals, on dragon bloodlines, on—]

The kitsune’s mental voice trailed off, distracted, already diving into his vast stores of accumulated knowledge.

Several meters away, Takara watched the cocoon form with ancient eyes that had witnessed countless transformations across millennia.

And for the first time in five thousand years, the Lightning Panthera had absolutely no idea what he was looking at.

(What are you, child? What are you becoming?)

***

The young shadowbeast broke free from Green’s loosened grip and pressed himself against Yinxin’s leg, relief and fear warring in his small form.

Yinxin gathered him close with one wing, her own tears falling freely now. Hitting the grass where Jayde had been lying. Soaking into the earth that was already cleaner, healthier, and more vibrant than it had been an hour ago.

None of them noticed the dramatic change beginning where those tears touched the soil. None of them saw the first hints of silver light starting to glow beneath the surface. None of them registered that something miraculous was taking root in earth nourished by a dragon’s grief and joy.

They were too focused on the cocoon.

On the terrifying mystery of what was happening inside.

On the child who might not emerge as herself.

[We can’t leave her here,] Isha said finally, breaking the stunned silence. [The cocoon is protecting her, but this glade is still in the Dark Forest. Other predators might be drawn to the power she’s radiating.]

”Can we move her?” Green asked, eyeing the cocoon warily. ”That barrier threw me back hard when I tried to approach.”

[I’m her bonded artifact,] Isha said, though his mental voice carried uncertainty. [The cocoon might not reject me the same way. And I can teleport her to the Pavilion’s medical bay, where she’ll be safe during... whatever this is.]

He floated closer to the cocoon carefully.

The barrier didn’t activate.

[It’s accepting me,] Isha confirmed with relief. [Yinxin, Reiko, Green—I can bring you with us. Takara...]

He looked at the small kitten form sitting quietly several meters away, blue eyes fixed on the cocoon with unsettling intensity.

[Will you come with us, or wait here?]

Takara considered. Going to the Pavilion meant potentially being separated from Jayde if they put the cocoon somewhere he couldn’t easily access. Staying meant waiting alone in a glade that had nearly witnessed her death.

The kitten stood, padding forward with careful steps, and positioned himself near Yinxin’s feet. A silent answer.

[Very well,] Isha said.

Yinxin limped forward on legs that shook with exhaustion, one paw still bleeding from where she’d bitten herself. She positioned herself beside Isha, ready to stay close to Jayde no matter what.

Reiko pressed against her other side. Green moved to join them, one hand reaching down to gently scoop up the small kitten who’d chosen to come.

Takara didn’t protest the handling. Just watched the cocoon with ancient eyes that held too many emotions to name.

”What do you think will emerge?” the healer asked quietly, still holding the small kitten.

”I don’t know,” Yinxin whispered, voicing the fear they all felt. ”And that terrifies me.”

Isha’s power built around them.

Space folded.

The cocoon—and the mystery within it—vanished from the glade, along with everyone who’d witnessed its formation.

***

The glade fell silent.

Blood-stained grass where Jayde had nearly died. Scattered ward stones, their purpose served, formations deactivated and inert.

And in the grass where Yinxin’s tears of grief and joy had fallen, silver light continued to grow.

Unnoticed.

Unwitnessed.

A miracle taking root in the earth nourished by a dragon’s love.

But that was a discovery for another day.

For now, somewhere in the Pavilion’s medical bay, a cocoon pulsed with mysterious transformation.

And those who loved the the young girl inside could only wait.

And hope.

And pray she would still be Jayde when she emerged.
