Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 83: Chapter 78: Return to the Hunt

Location: Luminari Pavilion → Dark Forest, Outer Ring | Doha (Lower Realm)

Time: Two Weeks After Recovery, Dawn

Dawn light painted the Pavilion’s crystalline walls in shades of amber and rose—colors that shouldn’t exist in architecture that didn’t quite follow normal physics. Jayde stood at the threshold, one hand resting on the doorframe that marked the boundary between impossible sanctuary and the real world waiting beyond.

Environmental assessment: Optimal conditions. Clear skies, mild temperature, light winds. Combat readiness: Confirmed.

(Finally. Two weeks felt like forever.)

Reiko pressed against her leg, his massive form radiating excitement through their bond. The shadowbeast had grown during recovery and training—shoulders reaching her hip now, muscles filling out under obsidian fur that rippled with Voidshadow essence. Still young, still developing, but stronger. Better.

[Can we go now?] His mental voice carried impatience. [The forest is waiting. I can smell it from here.]

”Eager?”

[Starving.] He shifted his weight, claws clicking against crystalline floor. [Training was good. Important. But not real. Not like hunting.]

Accurate assessment. Constructs provide tactical experience but lack the unpredictability of actual combat. Real threats teach lessons simulations cannot.

White appeared from somewhere—the Pavilion’s geometry made normal entrances irrelevant—carrying a small pack. His expression was the usual mix of disapproval and grudging respect that seemed permanently etched into his features.

”Final equipment check,” he said, tossing the pack to Jayde. ”Extra Qi restoration pills, crimsonclot powder, emergency signal flare. Your spatial ring’s already stocked with rations and water.”

Jayde caught it, slinging the pack across her shoulders. The weight settled familiar and comfortable. ”Thank you.”

”Don’t thank me yet.” White’s eyes were sharp, assessing. ”You’ve had two weeks of controlled training. Real combat’s different. Messier. More chaotic.”

[We’re ready,] Reiko said confidently through the bond.

”Confidence is good.” White’s tone carried warning. ”Overconfidence gets you killed. Remember your drills. Trust your training. And for the love of all that’s holy—”

”Use the bond, coordinate attacks, don’t let Reiko charge ahead alone,” Jayde recited. ”I know. You’ve drilled it into us for two weeks straight.”

”Then prove you actually listened.” White stepped back, arms crossing. ”Start in the outer ring. Easy targets. Build your coordination with low-risk encounters before pushing deeper.”

Tactically sound advice. Establish baseline performance metrics before escalating engagement parameters.

(We got this. We’re stronger now. Together.)

Green emerged next, her grey eyes warm despite the early hour. ”Remember—you’re not just hunter and weapon. You’re partners. Equals. Respect each other’s instincts, and you’ll do fine.”

She pressed something into Jayde’s hand. A small crystal that pulsed with faint green light.

”Emergency beacon,” Green explained. ”Crush it if things go truly wrong. I’ll sense it immediately and come running. But try not to need it, yeah?”

”We won’t.” Jayde tucked the crystal into a secure pouch. ”We’re ready.”

Isha appeared last—because of course the Divine Tome manifested at dramatic moments. His holographic form flickered with approval.

”Good hunting,” he said simply. ”And remember—every kill teaches. Every mistake instructs. Pay attention to both.”

The Pavilion’s exit shimmered, reality thinning to reveal the Dark Forest’s edge beyond. Dawn light filtered through ancient canopy, painting the world in emerald twilight that made Jayde’s breath catch despite herself.

Beautiful. Deadly. Home.

She stepped through, Reiko at her side, and the Pavilion vanished behind them like it had never existed.

***

The forest embraced them with familiar weight.

Thick air heavy with moisture and growth, the scent of rich earth and living things, the constant background symphony of insects and distant beast calls. Jayde’s Heat Sense flared automatically, painting thermal signatures across her awareness—small creatures in the undergrowth, larger predators in the middle canopy, the faint warmth of cultivation herbs scattered throughout.

Terrain assessment: Dense vegetation, multiple sight-line breaks, excellent ambush opportunities. Environmental factors: Moderate. Threat level: Acceptable for current parameters.

(The trees look bigger than I remember. Or maybe I’m just seeing them different now.)

[They smell right,] Reiko sent, nose twitching as he processed a thousand scents Jayde couldn’t even begin to identify. [Prey animals. Predators. Growing things. This is proper hunting ground.]

”Outer ring only,” Jayde reminded him, hand resting on her Runeinfused blade’s hilt. The weapon hummed against her palm, essence channels eager for combat. ”We start small. Build confidence. No heroics.”

[No heroics,] Reiko agreed. But his tail swished with barely contained excitement. [Just proper hunting. Like Mother taught. Like you taught. Together.]

They moved deeper into the forest, falling into the rhythm White had drilled into them. Jayde took point, eyes scanning for threats and opportunities. Reiko ranged slightly behind and to the left, using his superior senses to feed environmental data through their bond.

The mental link hummed with shared awareness—not words exactly, more like impressions and understanding flowing both directions. When Reiko caught a scent, Jayde felt it as directional data. When Jayde spotted something tactical, Reiko received it as instinct-level knowledge.

Different languages speaking the same information.

[Movement,] Reiko sent suddenly. [Ahead and right. Multiple signatures. Small pack.]

Jayde’s Heat Sense confirmed it immediately. Five thermal blooms clustered around a fallen log—canine-shaped, fox-sized, glowing with Sparkforged-tier essence that made the air shimmer.

Ember foxes.

Perfect.

Target assessment: Five hostiles, Sparkforged-tier. Significantly weaker than current combat parameters. Pack hunters—require coordinated elimination. Recommended approach: Ambush from elevation, area denial techniques, and prevent scatter.

She crouched behind thick undergrowth, Reiko settling beside her with predatory patience. Through their bond, tactical overlay merged with hunting instinct.

”There,” Jayde whispered, pointing. ”Five ember foxes. Sparkforged-tier, probably early. They’re hunting something—see how they’re circling that burrow?”

[I see them.] Reiko’s mental voice carried focus. [Easy prey. But they’ll scatter if we’re not careful.]

”So we don’t let them scatter.” Jayde’s tactical mind kicked into gear, pulling lessons from both Federation training and White’s brutal drills. ”I’ll hit the far edge with Flame Spark—not to kill, just to drive them toward you. You intercept from the right flank, cut off their escape route. I’ll provide covering fire while you engage, then move in for close combat once they’re contained.”

[And if one breaks through?]

”Heat Sense will track it. I’ll nail it with Flame Lance before it gets ten meters.”

[Good plan.] Satisfaction pulsed through the bond. [Mother would approve. Strategic, not just strong.]

(Mother Kameko. Who saved us both. Who trusted me with her son.)

Engagement parameters set. Initiating combat sequence in three... two... one...

Jayde’s Crucible Core blazed to life, Inferno essence flooding her channels with familiar heat. Her hand came up, fingers forming the casting pattern White had made her practice ten thousand times.

”Flame Spark.”

The technique manifested as a barrage of baseball-sized fireballs—not her most powerful spell, but perfect for area control. They streaked through the undergrowth like tiny meteors, impacting the far side of the ember fox pack with sharp cracks of displaced air.

The foxes scattered exactly as predicted.

Three broke left—straight toward Reiko’s position. One went right, trying to circle back. The last froze, confused by the sudden attack.

[Mine,] Reiko sent, and exploded from cover like a living shadow.

He was fast. So much faster than he’d been two weeks ago. Green’s specialized diet and White’s conditioning drills showed results—the shadowbeast moved with liquid grace, claws extended, silver eyes locked on targets with predatory focus.

The first ember fox never saw him coming.

Reiko’s jaws clamped on its throat, shadows writhing around his form to dampen the death throes. Quick. Clean. Efficient.

[One down,] he reported through the bond. [Two more incoming—]

”I see them.”

Jayde was already moving, circling left to flank the two foxes trying to escape Reiko’s ambush. Her blade came free with a whisper of steel, Runeinfused edge glowing with channeled Inferno essence.

The fourth fox—the one that had tried circling right—made a break for deeper forest.

”Flame Lance.”

The piercing technique manifested as a spear of concentrated fire, crossing twenty meters in an eyeblink. It punched through the fox’s hindquarters, sending the beast tumbling with a pained yelp. Not dead, but crippled. No longer a threat.

Three neutralized. Two remaining. Reiko engaging. Provide support.

The fifth fox—the confused one—finally found its courage and lunged at Reiko’s exposed flank while he finished the second kill.

Not happening.

”Ember Shield.”

The defensive technique materialized between Reiko and the attacking fox, a transparent barrier rippling with heat. The ember fox hit it hard, bounced back with singed fur and a dazed expression.

Reiko didn’t waste the opening. He pivoted, powerful hindquarters driving him forward, and his claws raked across the fox’s exposed belly.

Down.

Silence settled over the clearing, broken only by heavy breathing—Reiko’s more than Jayde’s—and the faint crackle of dying Inferno essence.

Five ember foxes lay scattered across the forest floor, their essence already beginning to dissipate back into the environment. Clean kills. Coordinated. Professional.

[That was...] Reiko’s mental voice carried satisfaction and surprise. [That was easy. Really easy.]

”That’s what training does.” Jayde approached the nearest corpse, pulling a small collection knife from her spatial ring. ”Makes hard things look easy. We worked for this, Reiko. Every drill, every failed attempt, every time White made us repeat the same sequence until we wanted to scream—this is why.”

Combat performance assessment: Excellent. Coordination factor: 9.2/10. Zero injuries sustained. Target elimination: Complete. Efficiency rating: Optimal.

(We did it. Really did it. Working together like we’re supposed to.)

She began the harvesting process, practiced hands extracting essence cores from each corpse. The Sparkforged-tier cores glowed with dull red light—not valuable enough to sell, but useful for trade or crafting. Waste nothing. Isha had taught her that.

[How many Merits?] Reiko asked, watching her work with curious silver eyes.

”Sparkforged-tier beasts are fifty Merits each normally,” Jayde calculated, tucking cores into her spatial ring. ”Five kills is two-fifty base. But we’ll get hunt bonuses—zero damage taken means efficiency bonus, coordinated kills mean style supremacy, pack elimination adds numerical overmatch...”

She pulled out her Divine Tome interface, checking the accumulation.

HUNT COMPLETE

Base Rewards: 250 Merits (5x Sparkforged-tier)

Efficiency Bonus: +50 (Zero damage taken)

Style Supremacy: +25 (Inferno-based elimination)

Numerical Overmatch: +40 (Pack elimination)

Move Efficiency: +10 (Minimal technique usage)

Total: 375 Merits

Current Merit Balance: 4,705.10

”Three hundred seventy-five Merits.” Jayde couldn’t quite keep the satisfaction from her voice. ”Not bad for fifteen minutes’ work.”

[Not bad?] Reiko’s tail wagged. [That’s amazing! We’re rich!]

”We’re not rich. But we’re building resources.” She scratched behind his ears, feeling warmth bloom in her chest that had nothing to do with Inferno essence. ”This is just the start, partner. We’re going to hunt together, grow stronger together, face everything this world throws at us—together.”

[Pack doesn’t abandon pack,] Reiko said softly.

”Never.”

Through their bond, emotions flowed both directions—pride, satisfaction, belonging, trust. The kind of connection that couldn’t be faked or forced. Real partnership, forged through shared danger and earned through dedication.

Tactical note: Current performance establishes baseline for future engagements. Partnership dynamics exceed initial projections. Combat effectiveness multiplier confirmed at approximately 2.1x individual capability.

(But it’s more than just combat effectiveness. It’s family. It’s not being alone anymore.)

The sun climbed higher, painting the canopy in shifting patterns of light and shadow. Somewhere in the distance, a greater beast roared—probably Flamewrought-tier, maybe even Inferno-tempered. Too strong for them. Not yet.

But someday.

”Ready for another hunt?” Jayde asked, resheathing her blade.

[Always,] Reiko replied immediately. [What’s next?]

”Let’s find something a bit more challenging. Still outer ring, but maybe mid-Sparkforged instead of early. Test our limits a little.”

[Testing limits is how we grow.]

”Exactly.”

They moved deeper into the forest, two hunters working as one, building confidence with every successful engagement. The Dark Forest stretched before them—dangerous, beautiful, full of opportunity and threat in equal measure.

But they weren’t afraid.

Not anymore.

Not together.

Four hours later, they emerged from the tree line with eight successful hunts logged and nearly fifteen hundred Merits accumulated. Not a fortune, but solid progress. More importantly—zero injuries, zero mistakes, perfect coordination throughout.

White would approve.

(Maybe even praise us. Okay, probably not. But he’ll definitely nod slightly less disapprovingly.)

Reiko’s exhaustion radiated through the bond—physical and mental. Hunting was draining work, even when successful. His massive form pressed against Jayde’s leg as they walked, seeking comfort and reassurance.

”You did great,” she murmured, hand running through his fur. ”Really great. Mother Kameko would be proud.”

[You think so?]

”I know so. You fought smart, stayed coordinated, and trusted our training. That’s what matters.”

[I miss her sometimes.] His mental voice was small, vulnerable. [Not all the time anymore. But sometimes. When we hunt, I remember her teaching me. How to track. How to strike. How to be pack.]

(Grief doesn’t go away. It just... changes. Becomes something you carry instead of something that crushes you.)

”That’s good,” Jayde said quietly. ”Remembering means she’s still with us. In our hearts, in our hunting, in how we take care of each other. That’s what pack means.”

[Pack means forever,] Reiko agreed.

They walked in comfortable silence, the Pavilion’s shimmer appearing at the forest’s edge. Isha would want a full report. White would critique every decision. Green would smile and offer congratulations.

Home.

Different from the Federation, different from anything Jayde had known in either life. But home nonetheless.

[Tomorrow we hunt again?] Reiko asked hopefully.

”Tomorrow we hunt again,” Jayde confirmed. ”Bigger targets. Harder challenges. But together.”

[Together,] he echoed.

Through their bond, determination flowed—shared purpose, shared strength, shared future. The trials would only get harder from here. The Dark Forest held dangers they’d barely glimpsed. The cultivation world waited beyond with threats Jayde could only imagine.

But they’d face it all.

Together.

Pack doesn’t abandon pack.

Never.
