Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 71: Chapter 66: Progress and Preparation

Location: Dark Forest - Outer Ring Cave | Doha (Lower Realm)

Time: Day 430, Dawn

Dawn light crept through the cave entrance like molten copper, painting familiar stone walls in shades of amber and shadow. Jayde moved through her morning stretches with practiced efficiency, muscles responding without hesitation beneath combat leathers that’d become like a second skin.

Lunge. Hold. Switch.

(We’ve been here so long. Almost feels like home.)

Thirty days in outer ring territory, since that educational fight with that Ironback with the Mid Ring. Forty-seven successful eliminations. Zero serious injuries. Mission parameters exceeded.

She dropped into a plank position, holding it while her Ember Qi flowed through meridians in steady pulses. Two thousand two hundred twenty-five units of raw power, humming just beneath her skin, waiting to be shaped into fire and force and fury.

Late Flamewrought tier. Ninety-nine point nine percent progression to Inferno-tempered.

So kriffing close she could taste it.

[Plateau effect confirmed. Physical training benefits are negligible without cultivation advancement. Progression stalled at 99.9% for fourteen days. Recommendation: Environmental pressure is insufficient for a breakthrough.]

(We knew this was coming. Green warned us.)

Sixty seconds. Ninety. Her arms didn’t tremble.

She’d stayed in the outer ring two weeks longer than planned—not because she was afraid of the mid-ring, but because the merits kept flowing. Herb collection had become almost as profitable as hunting, and the combination let her build resources faster than expected.

But the numbers didn’t lie. Her cultivation had stopped advancing. The outer ring beasts no longer provided adequate combat pressure, no matter how efficiently she hunted them.

Time to move forward. Time to try the Mid Ring again.

Jayde dropped to the cave floor, rolled to her feet, and grabbed her waterskin. The liquid was cool against her throat, sweet with dissolved minerals from the underground spring.

She pulled up the Divine Tome’s interface with a thought, reviewing the data she’d been tracking obsessively.

CURRENT 30 DAY STATUS:

- Combat Record (47 Days): 47 Eliminations

- Point Accumulation: 2,350 (hunting)

- Herb Collection: 2,200 points (pending sale)

- Injury Rate: Zero serious, four minor (all healed)

- Cultivation: Late Flamewrought - 99.9% (stalled)

Physical progression ceased. Mental development minimal. Environmental stagnation confirmed.

(The outer ring can’t teach us anything else.)

The interface shimmered, golden light resolving into a familiar presence. Not a full holographic projection—just Isha’s essence signature manifesting through the Divine Tome’s communication protocols, his voice carrying warmth that made something in her chest tighten.

”Good morning, Jayde.” Pride colored his tone. ”I’ve been reviewing your progress reports. Forty-seven eliminations in the last thirty days. Perfect record. Impressive work.”

(He sounds really proud of us.)

Emotional investment confirmed. Overseer satisfaction levels elevated. Positive reinforcement received.

”Thank you.” Jayde couldn’t quite keep the satisfaction from her voice. ”The outer ring’s been... educational.”

”Educational.” Isha’s laugh was warm. ”That’s one way to describe systematic domination of an entire ecosystem. You’ve learned the patterns, adapted your tactics, and executed with precision. Very few contractors achieve that level of competence in their first deployment.”

The praise settled into her bones, solid and real.

”But you’ve noticed the problem,” Isha continued, tone shifting to something more serious. ”Your cultivation’s stalled.”

”Fourteen days at 99.9%,” Jayde confirmed. ”No matter how many beasts I eliminate, no matter how perfectly I execute techniques. The outer ring can’t push me to breakthrough.”

”Because breakthrough requires genuine danger,” Isha said. ”Real pressure. The kind that makes your Crucible Core choose between adaptation and death. You’ve mastered this environment too thoroughly. There’s no threat here anymore.”

Tactical assessment confirmed by the overseer’s expertise. Current operational parameters are insufficient for advancement.

(So we need to go deeper.)

”The mid-ring,” Jayde said. Not a question.

”The mid-ring,” Isha agreed. ”You’ve entered before, but too soon, and you were ill-equipped. You know what’s waiting. Flamewrought-tier predators, essence-saturated environment, genuine combat pressure. Everything you need to trigger that final advancement.”

Jayde nodded slowly, pulling up her equipment inventory. ”I want to upgrade first. The merits I’ve accumulated—I can afford better gear now.”

”Smart.” Approval threaded through Isha’s voice. ”Show me your resource totals.”

She opened the full accounting. ”2,350 points from beast eliminations. Plus herbs I’ve been collecting—the Divine Tome’s been tracking market values. Should be worth approximately 2,200 additional points.”

”Sell the herbs first,” Isha advised. ”Let’s see your actual purchasing power.”

Jayde accessed the system’s market interface. The Divine Tome could analyze herbs, determine quality and potency, then connect to interdimensional markets where alchemists paid premium prices for rare ingredients.

It was genius, really. Passive income while hunting.

The interface displayed her collected inventory:

HERB COLLECTION - MARKET VALUATION:

- Red Blossom Lotus (Peak Quality): 12 units @ 80 points each = 960 points

- Ember Moss (Grade 2): 8 bundles @ 45 points = 360 points

- Ash Fern (Mature): 15 fronds @ 30 points = 450 points

- Flame Sage (Premium): 6 plants @ 65 points = 390 points

- TOTAL MARKET VALUE: 2,160 points

(Slightly less than estimated. But still really good.)

Resource diversification is proving effective. Herb collection requires minimal time investment, yields substantial merit accumulation.

”Sell everything,” Jayde decided. ”I’ll collect more later.”

The transaction processed instantly. Golden light flashed across the interface as her herbs dissolved into dimensional storage, transferred to buyers across the multiverse, and converted to points.

TRANSACTION COMPLETE:

Previous Balance: 7,467 points (746.7 Merits)

Herb Sale: +2,200 points (220.0 Merits)

NEW TOTAL: 9,667 points (966.7 Merits)

Nearly a thousand Merits. In less than three months of forest work.

(That’s... that’s actually amazing.)

Merit accumulation rate exceeding projections by 47%. Combination hunting and herb collection strategy is highly efficient.

”Nine hundred sixty-six Merits,” Isha said, satisfaction clear in his voice. ”More than enough for the upgrades you’re considering. What’s on your list?”

Jayde pulled up the Nexus Exchange catalog, filtering for the equipment she’d been eyeing for the past month.

”Four items,” she said, highlighting each one. ”Enhanced Combat Blade, Armor Reinforcement Array, Qi Regeneration Pendant, and Emergency Healing Formation. Total cost: 650 Merits.”

Isha manifested the items as holographic displays, examining each one with professional scrutiny.

ENHANCED COMBAT BLADE (RUNEINFUSED):

- Base Material: Flamewrought-tier steel

- Runic Enhancement: Essence channeling, self-sharpening, durability boost

- Special Property: Channels user’s Ember Qi into cutting edge

- Effectiveness: 300% damage increase vs. unenhanced blades

- Cost: 200 Merits

”This will let you channel Inferno essence directly through the blade,” Isha explained. ”Your basic attacks become Sparkcasting techniques. Very efficient for sustained combat.”

(So we can set things on fire just by hitting them?)

”Essentially, yes,” Isha confirmed, reading her thoughts through their soul-bond connection. ”The blade becomes an extension of your cultivation, not just a weapon.”

Tactical advantage: Reduced Qi expenditure for basic attacks. Enhanced penetration against armored targets. Synergy with existing combat style.

”I want it,” Jayde said.

ARMOR REINFORCEMENT ARRAY:

- Type: Runic formation applied to existing armor

- Effect: Distributed impact absorption, essence resistance

- Coverage: Full torso protection + partial limb coverage

- Durability: Withstands Flamewrought-tier attacks (10 hits before recharge)

- Recharge: 6 hours rest OR 100 Qi infusion

- Cost: 150 Merits

”This doesn’t replace your armor,” Isha clarified. ”It’s a formation that integrates with what you’re already wearing. Creates a secondary defensive layer that absorbs impacts before they reach you.”

”So it’s like having an Ember Shield active constantly?” Jayde asked.

”Similar, but different. Ember Shield blocks single attacks completely. This array distributes damage across multiple hits. Good for extended combat where you’re taking accumulated damage rather than single massive strikes.”

[Survivability increase significant. Multiple engagement capability enhanced. Recommended acquisition.]

”Approved,” Jayde said.

QI REGENERATION PENDANT:

- Type: Passive essence-gathering artifact

- Effect: +50% Qi regeneration rate (stacks with natural recovery)

- Mechanism: Draws ambient Ember Qi from the environment

- Limitation: Effectiveness varies by location (high in forest, low in cities)

- Cost: 180 Merits

Isha’s approval was immediate. ”This is probably the most valuable item on your list. Your Qi pool is substantial—2,225 capacity—but you burn through it quickly in combat. This pendant will cut your recovery time in half.”

[Current regeneration: 180/hour (rest), 90/hour (active). With pendant: 270/hour (rest), 135/hour (active). Combat sustainability dramatically improved.]

(That means we can fight longer without running dry.)

”Exactly,” Isha confirmed. ”And in the mid-ring’s essence-saturated environment, the pendant will work at peak efficiency. You’ll recover Qi faster than you use it for most techniques.”

”Definitely want it,” Jayde said.

EMERGENCY HEALING FORMATION:

- Type: Single-use instant-activation formation

- Effect: Immediate wound closure, organ stabilization, blood restoration

- Activation: Automatic upon life-threatening injury OR manual trigger

- Coverage: Treats injuries up to 80% severity

- Limitation: One use only, requires 24hr cooldown, cannot revive from death

- Cost: 120 Merits

”This is your insurance policy,” Isha said seriously. ”If something goes catastrophically wrong—ambush, unexpected Inferno-tempered predator, tactical miscalculation—this formation buys you time to escape. It won’t save you from instant death, but it’ll keep you alive long enough to use an escape talisman.”

Federation doctrine: Always maintain emergency backup protocols. Single-point-of-failure scenarios are unacceptable in combat operations.

(We’ve already got Green’s healing pills. Is this redundant?)

”Healing pills take time to work,” Isha explained. ”Seconds to minutes. This formation is instantaneous. If you take a claw through the chest, the formation activates before you hit the ground. Stops the bleeding, seals the wound, and stabilizes your vital signs. Then you can use a healing pill for actual recovery.”

”Layered defenses,” Jayde said. ”Multiple redundancies. Could have used this when I ran into that Ironback.”

”Exactly. Never rely on single-point solutions.”

”All four items,” Jayde decided. ”Total: 650 Merits. Leaves me with 316.7 remaining.”

”Confirm purchase?” the Divine Tome’s interface prompted.

”Confirmed.”

Golden light erupted from the interface, materializing four distinct objects before her. The Enhanced Combat Blade gleamed in the dawn light, runes etched along its length pulsing with faint Inferno essence. The Armor Reinforcement Array appeared as a small formation disk, ready to be integrated. The Qi Regeneration Pendant hung from a simple chain, already radiating a gentle pull on ambient Ember Qi. The Emergency Healing Formation looked like a complex paper talisman, covered in intricate script.

TRANSACTION COMPLETE:

Items Acquired: 4

Merits Spent: 650

Remaining Balance: 316.7 Merits

Jayde picked up the blade first, testing its weight. Perfectly balanced. She channeled a trickle of Ember Qi into it—the runes flared, and flames danced along the edge.

(Oh. Oh, this is perfect.)

Weapon integration successful. Qi efficiency rating: Excellent. Tactical applications: Extensive.

”The armor array needs to be applied to your combat leathers,” Isha instructed. ”Press the disk against your chest piece.”

Jayde did. The formation disk dissolved into golden light, spreading across her armor like liquid fire. Runes etched themselves into the leather—subtle, almost invisible, but she could feel them humming with defensive power.

The pendant went around her neck. Immediately, she felt the difference—ambient Ember Qi flowing toward her, drawn by the artifact’s pull, feeding into her Crucible Core in a steady stream.

[Regeneration rate increase confirmed. Current recovery: 272/hour passive. Pendant is functioning optimally.]

The Emergency Healing Formation she tucked into her spatial ring, easily accessible but protected.

”Equipped and ready,” Jayde said, testing her range of motion. The armor moved perfectly, the blade felt like an extension of her arm, and the pendant’s gentle pull was already refilling the small amount of Qi she’d used for testing.

”Good.” Isha’s pride was unmistakable. ”You’ve earned these upgrades through skill and discipline. Now—talk to me about your mid-ring strategy.”

Jayde pulled up the forest map, highlighting the boundary region. ”Systematic penetration. I’ll start with short reconnaissance missions—one to two hours deep, identify threats, and map safe routes. Build a mental model of the environment before committing to extended operations.”

Standard reconnaissance protocol. Information gathering before tactical commitment.

”I’ll target Flamewrought-tier beasts initially,” she continued. ”One hundred points per elimination. Higher risk than outer ring targets, but manageable with upgraded equipment and tactical planning.”

”What about your cultivation breakthrough?” Isha asked.

”The mid-ring combat pressure should trigger it,” Jayde said. ”Real danger, genuine threat to survival. My Crucible Core will adapt or die. That’s what breakthrough requires.”

”And if you encounter Inferno-tempered predators?”

”Avoid if possible. Engage only with an overwhelming tactical advantage. Retreat if the situation deteriorates.” She met Isha’s gaze through the holographic connection. ”I won’t take stupid risks again. But I also won’t learn anything staying here.”

(We’ve mastered the outer ring. Time to move forward.)

Isha was quiet for a long moment, studying her through their soul-bond connection. Then he smiled—genuine warmth breaking through his professional demeanor.

”You’ve grown remarkably,” he said softly. ”Six months ago, you were a traumatized child barely holding yourself together. Now you’re planning tactical operations like a seasoned contractor. I’m proud of you, Jayde.”

The words hit harder than expected. Pride from trainers, from overseers, from people who’d invested in her success—it mattered more than she’d realized.

(He believes in us.)

Emotional validation received. Social bond strengthened. Motivation increased.

”Thank you,” Jayde said quietly. ”For everything. The training, the support, the patience. I wouldn’t be here without you.”

”You’d be somewhere,” Isha corrected gently. ”Maybe not here, maybe not with the Starforge Nexus, but your will to survive is extraordinary. We just gave you tools and training. You did the rest.”

He pulled up her full stats display, reviewing her progression.

CURRENT CULTIVATION STATUS:

Tier: Late Flamewrought (99.9% to Inferno-tempered)

Ember Qi Pool: 2,225/2,225

Regeneration: 272/hour (rest), 136/hour (active) - WITH PENDANT

Physical Stats:

- Strength: 37/100

- Agility: 41/100

- Endurance: 38/100

- Constitution: 38/100

Mental Stats:

- Mental Resilience: 62.3/100

- Willpower: 58.1/100

- Focus: 46.7/100

- Emotional Stability: 54.8/100

”You won’t progress further in the outer ring,” Isha said, confirming what she already knew. ”The environment can’t challenge you anymore. You’ve learned its patterns too well.”

”So the mid-ring is the only option.”

”For advancement, yes. You could stay here safely, accumulate more merits, and build resources. But your cultivation would stagnate indefinitely.”

Risk versus reward calculation: Stagnation guarantees failure. Advancement requires challenge. Choose growth.

(We didn’t survive this long to play it safe forever.)

”I’m ready,” Jayde said with conviction. ”The outer ring taught me the fundamentals. Time to test them against real threats.”

Isha nodded slowly. ”I agree. Your preparation is thorough, your equipment is appropriate, and your tactical planning is sound. You have my approval to begin mid-ring operations.”

Relief and anticipation flooded through her in equal measure.

”Start tomorrow,” Isha advised. ”Spend today reviewing your notes, planning your initial reconnaissance route, and ensuring all equipment is fully integrated. The mid-ring isn’t going anywhere—one more day of preparation won’t hurt.”

Sound strategic recommendation. Final preparation phase advised.

”Tomorrow, then,” Jayde agreed. ”First light. I’ll scout the boundary region, identify initial targets, and begin systematic penetration.”

”And Jayde?” Isha’s voice carried weight. ”Remember—you’re not just hunting beasts anymore. The mid-ring predators are intelligent, territorial, and dangerous. They hunt in coordinated groups. They use tactics. They’ll adapt to your patterns if you become predictable.”

(So we stay unpredictable.)

”Vary routes, change tactics, never establish patterns,” Jayde recited. ”Federation combat doctrine. I know.”

”Good.” Isha’s presence began to fade. ”I’ll be monitoring your bio-signs. If you need extraction, signal immediately. Pride isn’t worth your life.”

”Understood.”

”Good hunting, contractor.”

The connection dissolved, leaving Jayde alone in her cave with the dawn light and her new equipment.

She looked at the Enhanced Combat Blade, felt the Armor Reinforcement Array humming through her leathers, and sensed the Qi Regeneration Pendant drawing power from the air itself.

Nearly three months of systematic hunting and learning. Nine hundred sixty-six Merits earned through skill and discipline.

And tomorrow, she’d take everything she’d learned and push herself against real danger, but this time she will be ready, unlike last time.

(We’re ready for this.)

Affirmative. Preparation complete. Equipment optimal. Training sufficient. Mental state: Focused and determined.

(The mid-ring won’t know what hit it.)

Jayde smiled—not the child’s smile, but the Federation tactical officer’s predatory grin.

Tomorrow, the real work begins.

Tonight, she’d prepare.

And when dawn breaks tomorrow, she’ll step across that boundary with confidence, calculation, and the absolute certainty that she’d earned the right to be there.

The outer ring had been her classroom.

The mid-ring would be her crucible.

And she’d emerge from it stronger, faster, and one step closer to Inferno-tempered power.

The rest of the day passed in methodical preparation. Jayde reviewed her forest maps, studied the Old Man’s notes on mid-ring predators, and practiced integrating her new blade into existing combat forms.

The Enhanced Combat Blade changed everything. Where before she’d had to choose between weapon strikes and Sparkcasting techniques, now every slash carried Inferno essence. Her Qi expenditure dropped dramatically—basic attacks that would’ve required 4 Qi for a Flame Spark now cost maybe half a unit just to enhance the blade’s edge.

Combat efficiency increased 400%. Qi conservation is substantial. Sustained engagement capability enhanced, this blade would have made a huge difference against the Ironback.

The Armor Reinforcement Array she tested by deliberately slamming her shoulder against the cave wall. The impact was distributed across her entire torso, barely felt. Ten hits before needing recharge—that could mean the difference between survival and death in a desperate fight.

(This is really good armor now.)

As evening approached, she sat at the cave entrance, watching the outer ring’s familiar shadows lengthen. Tomorrow, she’d leave this relatively safe territory behind.

The forest rustled in the evening breeze. Somewhere in the mid-ring, predators were hunting. Flamewrought-tier beasts that could kill her if she made mistakes.

But she wouldn’t make mistakes.

Tomorrow we advance.
