Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 82: Chapter 77: Partnership Training

Location: Luminari Pavilion - Combat Arena | Doha (Lower Realm)

Time: Days 467-468, Dawn through Evening

Recovery week ended the way everything ended in the Pavilion.

With White’s voice cutting through the morning air like a blade.

”Arena. Now.”

Jayde dragged herself out of bed, ribs only slightly protesting. Green’s healing had done its work. The injuries were gone, replaced by that peculiar soreness that came from accelerated tissue regeneration. Not pain exactly. Just awareness that her body had been broken and put back together.

[Are we fighting?] Reiko asked, instantly awake and alert. He’d grown accustomed to the Pavilion’s routines. Food came regularly. Soft beds appeared when needed. And White’s voice meant training.

”We’re training,” Jayde corrected, pulling on her armor. The Ranger Set felt comfortable now, familiar. Like a second skin. ”There’s a difference.”

[Not much of one,] Reiko grumbled. But he was already on his feet, shaking out his fur. The cub had filled out during recovery. Green’s specialized diet showed results. Stronger shoulders. Better muscle definition. Still young, still growing, but less fragile than he’d been.

The arena waited.

White stood in the center, arms crossed, expression unreadable. Around her, the space had been reconfigured. Obstacles scattered throughout. Practice dummies arranged in various formations. And something new—constructs. Six of them. Wolf-shaped, essence-forged, radiating Flamewrought-tier power.

”Partnership combat,” White announced without preamble. ”You’ve got a bond. Mental link. Shared awareness. Time to stop being two individuals and start being one unit.”

He gestured at the constructs.

”Simple drill. Eliminate the pack. Use whatever tactics you want. I’ll evaluate coordination, communication, and efficiency.”

[This’ll be easy,] Reiko sent confidently. [I know how to hunt.]

Six Flamewrought constructs. Manageable individually. Together—dangerous. Need coordinated approach.

”Ready?” White asked.

Jayde drew her Runeinfused blade. ”Ready.”

The constructs activated with a low hum.

Then chaos.

***

Reiko charged.

Pure predatory instinct—identify prey, close distance, strike for the throat. He moved like liquid shadow, faster than anything his size should move, claws extended and gleaming.

The lead construct met him head-on. Impact sent both tumbling.

Meanwhile, Jayde moved laterally, trying to flank—

[Left side open!] Reiko sent urgently.

She pivoted, saw two constructs converging on her position, adjusted stance—

But Reiko had already disengaged from his target, leaping to intercept one of hers. The construct he’d abandoned immediately pressed advantage, slamming into his exposed flank.

[Ow!]

He’s fighting individually. Not coordinating. Need to—

”Reiko, fall back!” Jayde called out loud, forgetting the mental link entirely.

The constructs capitalized on their confusion. Coordinated assault. Three on Jayde, three on Reiko. Textbook pack tactics—divide and conquer.

”Stop!” White’s command froze the constructs mid-strike.

Jayde and Reiko stood panting, separated by twenty feet of arena floor. Neither injured seriously, but both completely out of position. Tactical disaster.

White’s expression was carved from ice.

”That,” he said flatly, ”was pathetic.”

***

”Problem one,” White continued, pacing between them. ”You’re fighting like strangers. Reiko—you have a partner. Stop charging in alone. Jayde—you have a shadowbeast companion with superior speed and senses. Use him.”

[But I’m supposed to protect her—]

”Protection means coordination, not suicide charges.” White’s tone brooked no argument. ”You’re a team. Act like one.”

He reset the constructs.

”Again. This time, communicate before engaging. Establish roles. Who leads? Who flanks? Who handles which targets?”

Jayde met Reiko’s silver eyes. Quick tactical assessment through bond. Share intentions before acting.

[Okay. I’ll scout first. Tell you what I smell.]

”Good start,” Jayde said aloud. Then caught herself. Use the bond. Faster.

[Right. Bond. This is weird.]

You’ll adapt.

”Begin!” White commanded.

The constructs activated again.

This time, Reiko didn’t charge. He circled, nose twitching, feeding sensory data through their link. Jayde received it—not in words, but impressions. Scent markers. Positioning. Threat assessment filtered through predatory instinct.

Three clustered left. Vulnerable to area attack. Two right, watching flanks. One trailing—isolated.

She shared tactical overlay through the bond. Attack vectors. Optimal approach angles. Where to strike, when to disengage.

Reiko’s response carried confusion—too abstract, too complex—but understanding began forming.

[So... I hit the lone one while you hit the three?]

Close enough. I’ll provide covering fire. You eliminate the target, then—

[Then I help you with the others. Got it.]

They moved.

Jayde’s Flame Spark barrage forced the left cluster into defensive posture. Not meant to kill. Just control positioning, keep them occupied.

Reiko hit the isolated construct like a shadow given teeth. Claws raked vulnerable joints. Jaws clamped on the throat analog. The construct shattered under coordinated assault—speed, power, precision.

[Done! Coming to help—]

”No!” Jayde called through the bond. Right flank, two incoming on my position. Intercept!

He pivoted mid-stride, crashed into the flanking pair. Bought her three seconds.

Three seconds was enough.

Ember Shield absorbed the left cluster’s counterattack. Flame Lance punched through the weakest target. Down to four constructs.

Then two.

Then zero.

Silence settled over the arena.

White studied them for a long moment. ”Better. Still sloppy. But better.”

[We won,] Reiko sent, tail wagging slightly.

”You survived,” White corrected. ”There’s a difference.”

***

Drill after drill followed.

Morning bled into afternoon. Afternoon into evening. White was merciless, relentless, and absolutely unimpressed by anything short of perfection.

”Reiko—left flank means LEFT, not ’wherever you feel like going.’”

”Jayde—stop micromanaging every movement. Trust his instincts.”

”Both of you—use the bond. I shouldn’t hear a single spoken word during combat.”

They stumbled. Failed. Improved incrementally.

The mental link became smoother. Less like shouting across distance, more like shared awareness. Jayde would think tactical assessment; Reiko would feel it as instinct-level understanding. Reiko would sense a threat; Jayde would receive it as precise directional data.

Different languages. Same information.

White introduced complications. Terrain obstacles. Environmental hazards. Multiple enemy types requiring different approaches. Timed objectives. Scenarios where one of them was ”injured” and the other had to compensate.

”Flanking drill. Reiko, you’re bait. Draw them in. Jayde, you’re ambush. Wait for opening.”

[I don’t like being bait,] Reiko complained.

Then don’t get caught. You’re faster than they are.

The drill began.

Reiko darted between obstacles, constructs pursuing. Not running away—leading them. Creating a pattern, establishing a rhythm. Predators following prey into a prepared kill zone.

Jayde waited. Patient. Disciplined.

Three. Two. One.

”Now.”

She struck from concealment. Flame Torrent caught the lead construct in a sweeping arc. Reiko pivoted instantly, crashed into the second from behind. The third barely had time to register the changed circumstances before Jayde’s blade found its core.

Perfect coordination.

”Adequate,” White grudged. ”Again.”

***

The breakthrough came during a rescue drill.

”Jayde—you’re surrounded. Depleted Qi. No escape routes. Reiko has to extract you.”

The constructs closed in. Six of them. Flamewrought tier. Coordinated. Jayde fought defensively, blade work keeping them at a distance but unable to break through.

Extraction needed. Multiple hostiles. Recommend—

[Already moving,] Reiko interrupted.

He didn’t come in straight. Didn’t charge blindly. Instead, he worked the angles. Used shadows. His Voidshadow heritage made him harder to track in the arena’s dim corners.

The first construct never saw him coming. Claws raked from behind, dropping it instantly.

[Opening created. Your six o’clock. Move!]

Jayde didn’t question. Just moved. Explosive backward dash through the gap Reiko created, Ember Step burning precious remaining Qi for speed.

They met mid-arena. Back to back. Constructs closing from all sides.

[This was your plan?] Reiko asked, nervous energy flooding the bond.

This is our plan. Together.

Something clicked.

Not in their minds. Deeper. The bond itself shifted, strengthened. Two separate awareness merging into a unified tactical understanding.

Jayde felt Reiko’s predatory instincts as clearly as her own tactical training. He felt her strategic thinking overlay his combat reflexes.

They moved as one.

Reiko struck left—Jayde covered right. She channeled Flame Spark—he followed the targeting instinctively. They pivoted, synchronized, each movement complementing the other.

Constructs fell like dominoes.

When silence returned, both stood panting, uninjured, victorious.

White actually smiled. Small. Brief. But real.

”Now you’re getting it.”

***

Evening found them sprawled in the recovery chamber.

Exhausted. Sore. But satisfied.

[That was amazing,] Reiko sent, too tired to move. [Did you feel it? When everything just... worked?]

”Yeah.” Jayde scratched behind his ear, feeling the bond humming contentedly. ”I felt it.”

[We’re actually good together.]

Tactical assessment confirmed. Partnership provides a significant combat multiplier. Strategic value: substantial.

(We’re not alone anymore,) Jade added. (We have pack.)

[Pack,] Reiko echoed sleepily. [Best pack.]

White entered, carrying food. Real food, not rations. Meat for Reiko. Actual seasoned dishes for Jayde.

”You’ve earned rest,” he said, setting plates down. ”Tomorrow, we increase the difficulty. Inferno-tempered constructs. Higher numbers. Worse terrain.”

[Looking forward to it,] Reiko mumbled through a mouthful of meat.

White’s expression softened imperceptibly. ”You’re ready. Not for the pride—don’t even think about facing them yet. But for Mid Ring hunting? With proper caution?”

He met Jayde’s gaze.

”You’ll do.”

High praise from White.

Jayde smiled. ”When do we start?”

”Week from now. Need to build your stamina first. Today was basics. Tomorrow we test if those basics hold under real pressure.”

He turned to leave, paused at the doorway.

”Good work today. Both of you.”

Then he was gone.

[Did White just... compliment us?] Reiko asked, bewildered.

”I think he did.”

[Weird.]

”Very weird.”

They ate in comfortable silence. The bond thrummed between them—warm, solid, permanent. Not just a magical contract. Something deeper. Something earned through sweat and coordination and trust built in the crucible of White’s merciless training.

Partnership.

Jayde thought about facing the Dark Forest again. Mid Ring hunting. Dangerous beasts. Life-or-death situations.

But this time—this time she wouldn’t be alone.

Tactical advantage: significant. Partner: reliable. Unit cohesion: established.

(We’re stronger together,) Jade whispered. (So much stronger.)

Reiko pressed closer, warm and solid and loyal.

[Next week,] he sent, determination filling their bond. [We show the forest what pack can do.]

”Next week,” Jayde agreed.

And for the first time since Kameko’s death, since the pride’s threats, since everything—

She felt ready.

***

Morning came too soon.

White’s voice cut through sleep like always.

”Arena. Now. Hope you enjoyed the easy day, because today we find your breaking point.”

[He’s terrifying,] Reiko sent.

He’s effective. There’s a difference.

They dragged themselves to the arena.

White stood waiting. Behind him, the construct count had doubled.

”Let’s begin.”

And they did.
