129: Chapter 129 First Experience of a NewcomerGunshots rang out, short and rapid.

The group quickly dispersed into small teams, advancing toward the low-level zombies under Zhao Wei’s command.

Sun Hao was the fastest, like an unbridled beast.

He shifted his footing, threw a punch, and smashed the skull of a lunging zombie into pieces!

The sound of bones cracking exploded in the cold air, sending blood splattering everywhere.

Zhang Tianjin, meanwhile, moved quickly while keeping his gun steady.

”Bang! Bang!”

Two consecutive shots rang out, and the heads of two zombies burst open, leaving trails of scarlet blood and brains staining the snow.

Zhao Wei commanded calmly, while the new recruits guarded by the squad followed behind him, nervously shifting formations and clumsily attempting to fire back.

Zhou Cheng stayed on the flank throughout, like a moving thick wall, as solid as a shield, silently covering the rear for the entire formation.

He still stood quietly by Ye Nanxing’s side.

Snow and wind lashed against his thin frame; he merely narrowed his eyes slightly, his pale fingers silently flicking through the air.

When a zombie approached silently—

Its movements suddenly stalled, as if its spine had been crushed by an invisible hand, and it collapsed to the ground without a sound.

As if it had never lived.

However, not everyone could be as calm as the veterans.

Facing living, lunging zombies for the first time, the guard’s new recruits exposed their flaws in an instant.

One recruit panicked and pulled the trigger, bullets flying wildly, missing several shots and instead letting the zombies get closer.

”Ahhh—!”

He turned pale, retreated in terror, his soles slipping on the snow, nearly falling.

Another recruit was so terrified that his body went rigid; he watched helplessly as a zombie lunged at him, his hand trembling too much to pull the trigger.

Others lost their formation, retreating blindly and exposing the flank.

Zhao Wei’s eyes darkened as he roared:

”Hold the formation! Don’t panic! Aim for the head!”

Sun Hao shouted, lunged forward, pulled the recruit who was almost bitten back, and casually blew the zombie’s head off with a shot.

”Watch out! Scared of dying? If you’re scared of dying, go back to the base and sweep the floors!”

Zhang Tianjin remained expressionless, quickly firing follow-up shots while kicking the fallen recruit to make him stand up again.

Zhou Cheng stood silently on the outer perimeter, punching and shooting, bearing the brunt of the new recruits’ mistakes like a massive boulder.

They all knew very well:

The first time seeing blood always comes with a price.

But—they couldn’t die.

Even if it meant cursing and hitting them, they had to carry them through this alive.

Panic.

Terror.

Trembling.

Because the base had protected them too well, even when there were zombies, they had never appeared in such large numbers at once.

And most of the time, they had only practiced shooting and maneuvering in the base’s training grounds.

This was the first time they truly felt what it was like to have death rushing straight at them.

The smell of blood made them nauseous, and the clicking sound of zombie teeth snapping was like a nightmare.

Some were on the verge of tears, but gritted their teeth and held on.

Some had sweaty hands and didn’t even realize they were out of ammo, instinctively pulling the empty trigger.

Every shot fired, every swing of the blade, was a desperate struggle against their own fragile instincts.

Meanwhile, in the distance, Ye Nanxing stood quietly in the snow and wind, observing.

She did not intervene.

Nor did she order the veterans to fight in the new recruits’ stead.

Because she knew—

In the Apocalypse, those who cannot kill their first zombie on their own won’t survive the next day.

[Fear is normal.]

[The first time shedding blood is inevitable.]

[What really matters is whether they can grit their teeth and make it through.]

Ye Nanxing’s gaze was cold, her eyes calm as water.

Occasionally, when one or two zombies approached a dangerous distance, she would only move her fingers slightly.

A flash of cold light, and a thrown dagger would precisely pierce the zombie’s forehead.

Except for the most critical moments, she gave no one any extra assistance.

The threshold of life and death must be crossed by oneself.

Zhao Wei’s lips curled slightly with a blade-like smile:

”These brats, every one that makes it through counts.”

Sun Hao curled his lip, dismissively saying:

”Don’t expect too much; there are plenty who will just cry and wet their pants.”

Zhang Tianjin calmly shot down a lunging zombie and said indifferently:

”If they can survive, that’s a win.”

Zhou Cheng remained silent, but his grip on his gun was tighter than usual.

—They all understood that growth must be sacrificed in blood.

There are no miracles, and there is no pity.

Finally, in the chaos, a recruit with red eyes finally gritted his teeth, steadied his gun, and pulled the trigger.

”Bang!”

The bullet accurately blew the zombie’s head apart, splattering blood all over his face.

He froze for a moment, then gasped, breathing in large gulps of the bone-chilling air.

Then, like a madman, he continued to shoot!

The other recruits nearby were also stirred by this bloodlust, their survival instincts ignited; they gritted their teeth and began to fight back desperately!

Five minutes later.

The snow was left with only severed limbs, remains, and pools of blood.

The guard’s new recruits were covered in blood and filth, gasping for air, their eyes filled with the terror and daze of their first kill, but—they were standing.

They hadn’t fallen.

Ye Nanxing quietly retracted her gaze.

Her lips moved imperceptibly.

It wasn’t a smile.

It was something more complex, more heavy.

In the snow and wind, she thought slowly in her heart:

[The Apocalypse does not need innocence.]

[Only those who can stand in a sea of blood deserve to live.]

After clearing the zombies, the team continued forward.

Not far away, a collapsed gas station came into view, its broken billboard creaking in the wind like the mournful cry of a lonely soul in the Apocalypse.

Sun Hao alertly scanned the instruments and frowned:

”There’s movement; it should be living people.”

Ye Nanxing’s eyes darkened slightly, and she raised her hand to signal a stop.

Zhao Wei led the men to advance cautiously, their gun barrels always pointed steadily forward.

Behind the ruins, a group of huddled figures shivered at the base of a half-collapsed wall.

Four men and three women.

Their clothes were tattered, their faces pale, and their eyes were filled with the terror and despair of survivors who had just escaped death.

When they saw Ye Nanxing’s group, armed to the teeth, appear, they almost instinctively cried out:

”Save us!”

”Please... take us with you!”

”We’re freezing to death... please...”

Someone choked and knelt down, crawling forward on hands and knees.

Someone was holding a companion’s corpse, trembling incessantly.

Some even had a crazy glimmer of hope ignited in their eyes, staring fixedly at the clean combat uniforms, standard-issue weapons, and first-aid kits hanging at the waists of Ye Nanxing’s group.

Sun Hao raised an eyebrow, a trace of impatience appearing in his eyes.

Zhou Cheng stood even more firmly, guarding the front of the new recruits to prevent them from being soft-hearted and impulsive.

Zhao Wei snorted coldly, his gun barrel remaining steady.

Zhang Tianjin just expressionlessly changed his magazine, as if it didn’t matter whether they saved them or not.

The new recruits, especially those Children who had just experienced the baptism of zombies, showed a trace of hesitation and wavering on their faces.

The blood had not yet dried on their collars, but faced with people who were also in desperate straits, they subconsciously wanted to reach out.
