The Dragon Warlord's Silent Bride

DIANA’S POV

The Valence wardworks engineer asked to see the altered stone before denying anything.

Diana respected that.

The senior commissioner denied responsibility before leaving Government Terrace.

She respected that considerably less.

The actual technical review took place in the ward laboratory below. The Valence wardworks engineer stood behind the safety line while Julius Renn repeated part of the extended-load test.

Diana watched the readings with him.

The initial response was normal. So was the second range.

Then Renn held the stone under sustained pressure.

The drift appeared first, followed by the delayed retention they had found during the earlier test.

Beside her, the Valence engineer’s breathing changed.

Afterward, he examined the internal sample beneath magnification.

”This was not standard Valence treatment.”

Daric stood beside the evidence clerk. ”How do you know?”

The wardworks engineer looked irritated.

”Our stabilization method does not produce this pattern.”

”Could one of your facilities produce it deliberately?”

The engineer returned his attention to the sample before answering.

”Yes.”

”Would it require specialist knowledge?”

”Yes.”

”Special equipment?”

”Nothing specialized beyond a proper wardstone facility.”

That widened the problem.

The engineer continued. ”But someone would need to understand treatment timing very well.”

Julius Renn nodded. ”Agreed.”

Diana approved of that too. Neither man seemed interested in defending his own Crown’s expertise at the expense of the evidence.

They returned to Government Terrace with facts rather than accusations.

The senior commissioner waited with Valence counsel.

Julius Renn gave the conclusion first. ”The stone was deliberately altered.”

The commissioner stared at him. ”Certain?”

”Yes.”

The Valence engineer placed his own notes beside Renn’s. ”The treatment is not standard to our wardworks.”

”What would ordinary outgoing inspection have shown?”

The engineer glanced toward Renn. ”Probably nothing.”

Renn nodded. ”The standard acceptance sequence would not have revealed it.”

No one needed to forge every inspection. A compromised stone could pass through honest hands if the procedure never held it under pressure long enough to reveal the change.

The commissioner began working through the alternatives.

”Could transport damage create the same internal pattern?”

”No,” Renn said.

”Storage?”

”No.”

”Natural variation?”

The Valence engineer answered this time. ”This pattern is deliberate.”

Daric opened the copied certification packet. ”Then the outgoing records can be genuine and still fail to tell us when the stone was altered.”

”Yes,” the wardworks engineer said.

Paperwork alone could not locate the sabotage.

The commissioner turned toward him. ”You are saying Valence did this?”

The wardworks engineer answered before anyone from Blackharrow could.

”No.”

Renn added, ”We are saying a facility with proper stone-treatment capacity could produce the internal pattern.”

Raigoro looked toward the commissioner. ”We need your outgoing certification records.”

”You will have copies.”

”Transfer records.”

The commissioner hesitated. ”Relevant transfer records.”

”All of them for this shipment.”

He looked toward his counsel. The lawyer gave a reluctant nod.

”Agreed.”

Daric added, ”We also need the seal application record.”

The commissioner frowned. ”The royal seal arrived intact.”

”So did paperwork at Broken Ward.”

Nobody answered.

Daric did not need to explain further.

The commissioner said, ”You believe our seal was copied?”

”I believe a matching seal impression proves the impression matched.”

The Valence lawyer looked irritated. ”That is a very narrow statement.”

”Yes.”

The wardworks engineer opened his own certification copy. ”If the stone was altered before our final sealing, the record may show nothing unusual.”

”Correct,” Renn said.

”If it was altered after sealing, then we need to know whether any seal was replaced, copied, or legitimately reopened during transfer.”

The commissioner considered that before nodding. ”Those records will be included.”

Raigoro accepted the answer.

Nobody at the table had accused Valence, but nobody had cleared it either. They had simply found another place where the paperwork would have to meet physical reality.

Raigoro also left Broken Ward and Northline out of the discussion.

For now, Blackharrow kept those pieces.

The joint session ended with three agreed facts: the alteration was deliberate, it could survive ordinary inspection, and the relevant Valence records would be copied before the delegation departed.

The Southern representatives left.

Daric waited for the door to close before placing another file on the table.

”Now we discuss the part they do not need yet.”

Diana recognized the file.

Broken Ward.

Daric opened the compromised Valence shipment route first.

Quarry. Royal wardworks. Central depot. Commercial transfer. Border relay. Blackharrow.

Then he placed the older Broken Ward hardware route beside it.

Diana moved closer.

The origin points differed, as did the dates and the Blackharrow receiving destinations.

One name appeared in both chains.

Northline Provisioning Exchange.

Diana wrote: SAME COMPANY?

”Yes.”

Daric turned another page. ”That alone is not enough.”

Raigoro stood opposite him. ”Facility?”

Daric traced the first route. ”Hollow Bridge Transfer Station.”

Then he traced the second.

His finger stopped at the same place.

Diana leaned closer to the documents.

Julius Renn did the same. ”Different cargo.”

”Yes.”

”Different months.”

”Yes.”

Raigoro asked, ”Same staff?”

Daric checked the available copies. ”Unknown.”

Diana wrote: SAME PLACE DOES NOT MEAN SAME PERSON.

Daric read it. ”Correct.”

She added: BUT IT IS A PLACE TO CHECK.

”Yes.”

That distinction mattered.

An evidence clerk placed the two route sheets side by side and began marking what Blackharrow still lacked for Hollow Bridge: original weight registers, seal-reference records, staff assignments, and custody notes from both dates.

Diana followed the list as it grew.

They had started with an enormous commercial network. Now they had one physical transfer point and a set of records that could actually be checked.

Daric pulled the transfer summaries closer. ”I want original weight registers.”

Raigoro nodded.

”Seal records.”

Another nod.

”Staff assignments.”

”Request them.”

”Through Valence?”

”Commercial treaty channel first.”

Diana understood why.

Blackharrow could gather independent records before telling any foreign Crown exactly which overlap it considered important.

A knock interrupted them.

One of Daric’s evidence clerks entered carrying an open records packet.

”Commander.”

Daric looked up. ”What?”

The clerk hesitated.

Daric was already watching him more closely. ”What is missing?”

”One working copy of the route comparison.”

The room quieted.

”Which comparison?”

”The one prepared after this morning’s stone review.”

Raigoro looked directly at him. ”Northline named?”

”Yes, Your Grace.”

Diana looked toward the closed door the Valence officials had used.

Daric asked, ”When was it last accounted for?”

”Less than an hour ago.”

Diana looked back at the two route sheets on the table.

The wardstone could have been altered weeks earlier, somewhere along a route that might have passed through Hollow Bridge.

That investigation had barely begun.

But the route comparison had disappeared inside Blackharrow today.
