The Dragon Warlord's Silent Bride

DIANA’S POV

The message from Queen Maerissa arrived without the Valence royal seal.

That was how Diana knew it was dangerous.

The envoy appeared at Household Relief shortly after breakfast. He wore the formal red of Valence’s diplomatic household but carried no treaty folder and had no Blackharrow escort beyond the guard who had delivered him to Diana’s office.

Master Enric Marlon looked toward Diana, and she turned to the envoy.

He bowed. ”Your Grace. I carry a private communication from Her Majesty Queen Maerissa.”

Diana kept the chalk between her fingers as Alma rose from the second desk.

The envoy glanced toward her. ”The communication is private.”

Diana looked at Alma, then wrote:

SHE STAYS.

Alma said nothing.

The Household Guards remained directly outside the smaller receiving room. Diana entered with Alma, who took a place near the wall. The envoy followed, and the door remained unlocked.

He held out a folded letter without a royal crest, only dark wax pressed flat.

Diana took it.

The first word inside was her name.

Diana.

She read it again.

The envoy bowed. ”Princess Diana.”

The title did not feel like restoration. It felt like someone reaching into a grave to make sure the body remained useful.

Diana returned to the letter.

Maerissa’s handwriting had not changed. Elegant and precise, every letter controlled enough to make cruelty appear reasonable.

Diana,

Blackharrow may choose to keep what it has discovered inside its own walls. If you force the matter beyond those walls, the Five Crowns will not treat it as a private correction between sisters.

Diana continued.

The Blood-and-Flame Covenant required the First Princess of the Southern Crown. Every public record identified Selena Valence as that princess when Grand Duke Raigoro Kael invoked it.

True.

You stood beneath Selena’s veil and allowed the marriage to seal under her name.

Also true.

Diana could feel her pulse climbing, but the envoy remained silent.

Good. Maerissa needed no interpreter.

The marriage may be challenged if the truth becomes public. Your authority as Grand Duchess may be challenged. Valence’s succession would be reopened before courts that have recognized Selena as First Princess for years. Blackharrow’s knowledge after discovery may become a political question in every Crown court.

Diana had already considered all of it, and Raigoro had admitted the same possibilities. Maerissa had simply arranged each uncertainty into a weapon.

Then Diana reached the line written alone.

THE GRAND DUKE DEMANDED SELENA.

The fact beneath every other fear.

Raigoro had gone to Valence for the First Princess named in the records. Selena. He had invoked the covenant for her.

Diana had always known.

For months, the fact had mattered less because something else had grown around it. A man staying beside Vharos after usefulness ended. Frostberry preserve. Arguments. A violin. An accidental kiss.

A hand offered for a dance after he already knew Diana’s name.

Maerissa had chosen one true thing and placed it beneath all of them.

The letter continued.

Do not mistake the life you have built in Blackharrow for proof that you were the woman he intended to bring there.

Diana stopped reading.

Pain arrived with humiliating accuracy.

Maerissa knew her well enough to know where to place the knife.

The next lines were worse.

Selena remains the woman Valence publicly recognizes. She remains the woman Raigoro demanded from your father. Before you force the truth into the Five-Crown courts, decide whether you are prepared to discover which woman the Grand Duke would have chosen if Odran had placed both daughters before him honestly.

Diana’s throat tightened.

There was no answer anyone could prove because Raigoro had never known both daughters.

That was the point.

Maerissa did not need a real answer. She needed Diana to wonder about one.

The final paragraph contained no direct command, request for confession, or immediate threat of exposure.

If you value the safety you have found, consider carefully what a public correction would force Blackharrow to defend and Valence to contest. Do not confuse being kept after discovery with having been chosen before it.

Diana folded the letter.

The envoy said, ”Her Majesty requests no answer.”

Maerissa did not want a letter Diana could later place in someone else’s hands.

She wanted Diana’s next decision.

Convenient.

Diana took her slate.

WHY SEND THIS NOW?

”The letter traveled north with the delegation.”

The paper had not crossed fifteen days of road overnight. Maerissa had prepared it before any of them left Valence.

Diana wrote:

THEN WHY GIVE IT TO ME NOW?

”Her Majesty gave instructions.”

Diana waited for the rest.

”I was to keep the letter unless the delegation confirmed two things.”

The slate felt harder beneath Diana’s fingers.

”First, that His Grace knew enough to question the public identity and had not repudiated the marriage. Second, that Blackharrow continued presenting you publicly as his Duchess after that knowledge.”

He paused before adding, ”Last night satisfied the final condition.”

The dance.

Diana understood.

Maerissa had not been waiting to learn whether Blackharrow discovered the fraud.

She had been waiting to learn what happened afterward.

If Raigoro repudiated Diana, there was little Maerissa needed to prevent.

But he had not.

Blackharrow had continued presenting Diana as its Grand Duchess. Raigoro had protected her place in his household, protected her right to refuse questions, and crossed the Great Hall toward her even after he possessed enough evidence to know Selena was almost certainly the wrong name.

Diana had survived discovery with more protection than Maerissa could have expected.

Enough protection, perhaps, to become dangerous to the version of Valence Maerissa had spent nineteen years preserving.

That was why the letter had finally been placed in Diana’s hands.

The envoy continued. ”Her Majesty believes you may interpret those things too generously.”

Diana looked at him.

”Blackharrow keeping you as Duchess does not mean Valence can absorb a public correction without consequence. Her Majesty believes you should understand that before deciding whether the existing record needs to be corrected at all.”

There.

Maerissa had been careful.

She had not written an order telling Diana to continue calling herself Selena. She had not given Diana a demand that could be carried directly to Raigoro as proof that Valence wanted the substitution preserved.

She had simply described everything Diana might lose and left fear to recommend the safer choice.

The man’s composure was nearly perfect, but he did not appear to enjoy delivering the message.

Diana wrote: IS SHE THREATENING TO EXPOSE ME?

”No.”

Too fast.

Diana waited.

The envoy corrected himself. ”Her Majesty is describing a risk that already exists.”

There.

The Valence method.

They could describe everything that might happen if Diana chose badly and let fear do the work of a threat.

Diana wrote: WILL SHE BRING SELENA INTO THIS?

Something in the envoy’s composure slipped before he answered.

”I do not know Her Majesty’s plans.”

True, perhaps.

Useless either way.

Diana folded the letter smaller. The sentence remained even after the page disappeared inside her palm.

THE GRAND DUKE DEMANDED SELENA.

She erased the words before the envoy could read them.

YOU MAY LEAVE.

The envoy bowed. ”Princess Diana.”

Diana looked at him.

He corrected himself. ”Your Grace.”

Better.

The envoy left.

Alma remained near the wall until the door closed behind him. She had heard his spoken answers but had not read the letter, and she did not ask to.

Diana appreciated that.

Alma glanced toward the folded paper as Diana placed it inside the inner pocket of her dress.

Her decision.

”Master Marlon is holding the next case,” Alma said.

Diana nodded.

She returned to her office, where a missing dependent record waited beside a housing transfer and a restitution form.

Numbers. Names. Things that could be checked.

She worked through them one by one, grateful that each problem could be checked against a record instead of guessed at in silence.

The letter rested against Diana’s ribs for the rest of the day.

That evening, she placed it inside the locked drawer in her apartments and kept the key.

Before dinner, Raigoro found her at the household crossing.

”Command recorded a private Valence envoy in Household Relief today.”

Diana stopped.

He did not sound accusatory.

”Maerissa?”

Diana wrote:

YES.

Raigoro read it. ”Did she threaten you?”

Diana thought of the letter before writing:

NO.

The answer was true only in the most technical sense.

Raigoro looked at the slate, then at Diana. ”Do you want me to see what she sent?”

Diana considered the question.

NO.

”All right.”

He did not demand the message, order her to surrender it, or argue that Valence correspondence inside his Citadel belonged to him.

Raigoro turned to leave, then stopped.

”If that changes, tell me.”

Diana nodded.

He left without asking what the letter said.

Diana told herself Maerissa’s message had asked nothing of her.

Technically, that was true.

The letter contained no command and requested no answer.

By the following morning, Diana understood why.

Valence did not want a written reply.

It wanted her signature.
