The Dragon Warlord's Silent Bride

DIANA’S POV

The suspicious wardstone behaved perfectly for fifty-three minutes.

Diana knew because the test record required the time.

She found that more frightening than an immediate crack.

The second test took place far from Vharos in a shielded calibration room beneath the eastern ward offices. There was no dragon nearby and no Dragon Host traffic close enough for anyone to confuse Vharos’s behavior with the physical test itself.

Diana had been admitted for one controlled test because her time-stamped observations from the first incident had become relevant evidence.

Julius Renn made one condition explicit before the test began.

Diana was not the detector.

The test would proceed according to Ward procedure whether she reacted or not.

A Citadel magical healer monitored Diana from behind the separate safety line for throat pain, breathing change, dizziness, or resonance injury. Renn controlled ward safety and interpretation. A senior Ward Artificer operated the calibration frame and material diagnostics.

If Diana crossed the healer’s withdrawal threshold, she left the room whether or not the test had finished.

Diana approved of the arrangement considerably less than she approved of its logic.

The first questionable stone rested beneath a heavier testing frame, with a certified Blackharrow block nearby as the control.

Julius Renn checked both.

”First range.”

The Ward Artificer began the test.

Everything remained stable. Diana’s scar stayed quiet, and the dragonstone at her throat remained cool.

She wrote: NO RESPONSE.

The clerk recorded it.

Renn authorized the second range, and the Ward Artificer adjusted the frame.

Ten minutes passed without a change. Then fifteen.

Diana raised her slate toward Renn.

ORDINARY CERTIFICATION?

”Yes.” Renn kept his attention on the instrument. ”This block would already have passed.”

Diana looked at the stone.

If someone had altered it, they would not have needed corrupt inspectors at every checkpoint. The stone itself could survive an ordinary inspection.

Renn authorized the third range, and the Ward Artificer increased the load. The instrument light brightened.

The first readings remained normal.

Ten minutes passed.

Then fifteen.

Julius Renn leaned closer to the gauges.

The Ward Artificer noticed it too.

”Minor drift.”

Diana looked at the numbers and understood none of them.

Renn explained. ”Input is steady. Return is slowing.”

”Frame?”

”Checking.”

The technicians verified the calibration while the control lines remained stable. When Renn ordered the load lowered, the Ward Artificer reduced it. The questionable reading corrected.

Diana remained quiet.

He looked at her. ”Nothing?”

She shook her head.

”Again.”

They returned to the third range and waited twenty minutes this time.

As the test continued, Diana began to understand the method even if she could not understand the mechanism.

The stone needed time and pressure.

Ordinary inspection did not give it enough of either.

The Ward Artificer leaned toward the instrument. ”There.”

A second technician joined him. ”I see it.”

Diana still did not.

Diana raised her slate.

IN WORDS FOR PEOPLE WHO DID NOT MARRY ROCKS.

The Ward Artificer looked at her.

Renn did not.

”The stone receives the load correctly, but it is not releasing it through the expected pattern.”

Diana wrote: WHERE DOES IT GO?

He read the question.

”That is the problem.”

Another measuring arm was attached while the pressure remained constant. Several minutes later, the new gauge moved.

The Ward Artificer swore.

Renn said, ”Useful.”

”The stone is retaining part of the stress,” the Ward Artificer said.

Diana studied the block.

It had not cracked or heated. Nothing visible distinguished it from the stone that had already passed inspection.

Renn stopped the load.

The Ward Artificer cut the pressure.

The retained reading began to fall, but slowly.

Then Diana’s throat warmed.

She touched the scar.

The magical healer was already looking at her. ”Now?”

Diana nodded and wrote: HEAT AFTER LOAD ENDED.

The Ward Artificer turned. ”After?”

Diana underlined the word.

He checked the gauge, which was still falling.

The stone was no longer receiving pressure, yet whatever had happened inside it was continuing.

A second Valence sample was tested and behaved perfectly. A third showed only mild drift, while a fourth behaved normally.

Complication.

Diana trusted complications more than convenient patterns.

The Ward Artificer removed his gloves. ”The entire batch is not uniformly altered.”

Renn asked, ”Natural variation?”

”Possible until we examine the interior.”

The first stone went to a shielded cutting station. A narrow core was removed from it, followed by another from the Blackharrow control.

The Ward Artificer compared the two under magnification and pointed.

”There.”

The second Ward specialist examined the same place and swore.

Renn folded his arms.

The Ward Artificer pointed toward the exposed internal structure. ”Wardstone is treated after quarrying so its natural resonance becomes stable enough for structured load.”

Diana knew the simplified version.

He showed them the Blackharrow sample. ”Strain should distribute across the internal pattern.”

Then he indicated the Valence block.

”This treatment is different.”

”Different accidentally?” Renn asked.

”I can tell you what it does before I can tell you how it was produced.”

The Ward Artificer rotated the sample. ”The response channels remain intact enough for ordinary pressure.”

Diana pointed toward the testing frame.

”That is why it passed,” he said.

She nodded.

”Under sustained high load, synchronization begins degrading.”

Renn drew connected squares on paper.

”One stone starts drifting. The adjoining section compensates. If enough of the load shifts, the next section compensates too.”

Diana wrote one word:

CASCADE?

Renn looked at her.

”Yes.”

Diana stared at the diagram.

She wrote:

UNDER ORDINARY CONDITIONS?

”Possibly never,” Renn said.

Diana added:

WHAT CONDITIONS TRIGGER IT?

”Extreme sustained pressure.”

Ashen attack.

Battle.

Exactly when nobody could stop to ask whether a stone delivered six months earlier had been treated incorrectly.

Diana thought of West Rime, North Spur, and the junction.

Hardware that looked acceptable until the battle loaded it.

Her chalk moved.

THE HARDWARE LOOKED RIGHT UNTIL FULL LOAD.

Then:

THIS LOOKS SAFE UNTIL EXTREME PRESSURE.

Renn and the Ward Artificer both read it.

Diana added:

THE FAILURE HAPPENS WHEN ACCIDENT IS BELIEVABLE.

Nobody corrected her.

Diana wished someone had.

Julius Renn looked toward the altered stone. ”If a section failed during a major Ashen surge, the first explanation would be overload.”

”Or age,” another specialist said.

”Maintenance.”

”Hidden fracture.”

”Battle damage.”

Every explanation was reasonable enough to delay the right one.

By the time someone considered sabotage, the ward might already be gone.

Renn began giving orders.

”Quarantine every block from the restitution shipment.”

A clerk recorded it.

”Retest by individual crate. Extended load instead of ordinary acceptance.”

He turned to the Ward Artificer. ”Find archived samples from the Broken Ward repair stock if any survived.”

Archived Broken Ward samples would give them a comparison.

The magical healer looked toward Diana’s notes from the first incident.

”And Vharos?”

Renn considered the question.

”His response now corresponds with a confirmed anomaly.”

Diana waited.

Renn added, ”Corresponds. It does not prove he identified what the anomaly was.”

Then he looked at Diana.

”The same applies to you. Your reaction does not make you a testing instrument.”

Diana nodded.

”You felt something.” The Ward Artificer pointed toward the cut stone. ”We found what.”

Diana wrote: GOOD.

The clerk asked, ”Report classification?”

The Ward Artificer looked at the sample. ”This is not ordinary degradation.”

”Defect?”

”No.”

”Sabotage?”

Renn considered that longer.

”The internal treatment was deliberately altered.”

Diana looked at him.

He continued. ”I cannot tell you who altered it, where it was altered, or whether any Valence institution knew.”

The clerk recorded the finding while Diana studied the cut stone.

Someone had preserved its outer appearance and initial response. They had preserved enough normal behavior for the stone to pass an honest inspection.

The weakness was hidden inside time and pressure.

The stone had been made to arrive looking safe.

It had been made to fail later, when people would be dying quickly enough to blame the battle.
