Limitless Evolution As a Snake

I move on, faster than before, pain be damned.

A mutant rat the size of a terrier scuttles across the tunnel ahead of me. Normally, a nuisance to be dealt with. Today, with my scales cracked and my wing mechanism jammed, I give it a wide berth. It pauses, three eyes blinking in sequence, and actually looks at me really looks, the way prey looks at a predator it’s not sure is functioning properly.

I bare my fangs. Not enough to actually strike, just enough to remind it what I am.

It bolts, smart rat.

The deeper tunnels give way to the mid-level passages, and the mid-level passages eventually bleed into the upper reaches near Twawi. The air changes less swamp stench, more market smells: grilled protein, cheap spice oil, the chemical bite of unlicensed stimulants brewing in back-room stills. The walls here are brighter, lit by salvaged fluorescents and the occasional bioluminescent mould patch that some enterprising vendor has cultivated and is now selling as artisanal underground lighting, very authentic, very illegal.

I’m getting close. I can feel it in the way the concrete under my scales warms slightly. Twawi runs hotter than the deeper tunnels, thanks to all the bodies and all the illegal generators clustered in its central hub.

And Lyra’s there. Somewhere in that mess of shacks and jury-rigged infrastructure, she’s waiting.

The bond between us is... complicated. Old Mate calls it a dependency effect. She needs me in a way that goes beyond normal attachment, beyond even the obsessive love that my venom can trigger. The bond rewired something in her biology; conventional satisfaction stopped working the moment we connected. Only I can give her what she needs now.

It should feel controlling. It should feel like ownership, like I’ve taken something from her.

It does. But not in a cold, logical way. It’s a primal, possessive instinct. I want her to need me, not just because the System rewired her, but because what’s mine is mine. She worries, and I come back. That’s the entire equation. It’s my territory to protect.

I haven’t been showing up. I’ve been staring at rocks and getting chased by gators.

Guilt coils somewhere behind my sternum, tight and motionless, the way a snake goes still when it knows it’s already too late to run. Not the performative kind, not the ”oh no, I’m such a bad boyfriend” self-pity that people use to avoid actually changing. Real guilt. The kind that makes your scales itch and your chest tight and your stupid snake brain replay every stupid decision that led you here, injured and alone in a tunnel, while someone who cares about you wonders if you’re dead.

[System: location update: you’re about two hundred meters from the eastern corridor junction. Lyra’s shack is another fifty beyond that. Reckon she’s home; her thermal signature’s been stationary for the past hour, which either means she’s waiting or she’s passed out from worry. Hard to tell with dark elves; they run cool.]

I thought she was at the penthouse? And thanks for that incredibly helpful assessment.

[System: Yeah, nah, you’re welcome, mate. The penthouse is YOUR home; she still has her own home. And we can’t have you having a proper sook before you even get to her door. Get on with it, ya drongo.]

The tunnel widens. I’m in Twawi now, or close enough that the difference doesn’t matter. The central corridor is ahead, and it’s wider, brighter, lined with market stalls even at this hour, because the Undercity doesn’t believe in business hours or sunlight or basic concepts like maybe people should sleep sometimes.

The eastern corridor is quieter. Fewer stalls, more residential shacks built into the tunnel walls, the kind of makeshift architecture that says ”I live here permanently, but I’m not admitting it.” Lyra’s place is at the far end, where the tunnel narrows again before opening into a small chamber that used to be a maintenance office and is now, somehow, a home.

I can see the light from her window. Just a glow, faint through the gaps in her improvised door, but it’s there. She’s there.

Arriving means facing her. It means letting her see the cracks in my scales and the fear I hide behind them. The thought of being seen, really seen, is something I’ve spent two lifetimes avoiding. But I push forward anyway, stomach twisting. She’s worth the vulnerability.

I stop at Lyra’s door. It’s not really a door; it’s more of a salvaged subway barrier propped across a doorway, hinged with what looks like bicycle chains, but it’s hers, and it means something.

I could turn around. I could slither back into the dark and come up with a better story, one where I don’t look like I’ve been used as a chew toy. I could-

The door swings open.

Lyra stands in the doorway, backlit by the shack’s interior, and for a second I forget how to be a snake. Her silver-white hair is loose, falling past her shoulders in waves that catch the lamplight like something alive. Her green eyes are wide, perpetually dilated the way dark elf eyes get when they’re focused, and right now they’re focused entirely on me with an intensity that makes my scales prickle.

Then she sees the cracks.

”Matt.” My name in her mouth is half-relief, half-horror. She drops to her knees, hands already reaching for me, and stops just short of touching. Cop instincts, I guess she assesses before contact. Her eyes track the line of fractures along my right flank, the way my left wing sits wrong in its pocket, the general state of disarray that is my entire existence.

”Hey”, I reassured, because what else do you say when the person who loves you finds you broken on their doorstep. ”I’m fine. Mostly fine; it just looks worse than it is.”

”It looks like someone tried to grind you into paste.” Her voice is steady, which is how I know she’s not steady at all. Lyra gets quiet when she’s scared. The louder she is, the more okay she is; silence means trouble.
