The freezing mountain wind howled through the razor crags of the Iron Range, biting into Sagiri’s exposed skin as he moved across the high northwestern ridges.

He leaped across a wide chasm between two jagged peaks, his boots finding secure purchase on the slick, frost-coated shale without slipping down the sheer precipice.

The weight of the Living Memory pulsed steadily in his blood, radiating a deep, rhythmic warmth that kept his limbs agile against the bitter sub-zero gale.

Across his back, Nokai rested silently beneath its weathered gray cloth wraps, its dark steel humming faintly with quiet, predatory anticipation.

He had been running for hours through the rugged northwestern passes, putting leagues of frozen wilderness between himself and the roaring battle in the Western Basin.

Far to the southeast, the subterranean vibrations in the bedrock had finally settled into a rhythmic hum, signaling that Zaira had broken the western line.

’N’varu held them,’ Sagiri thought as his crimson eyes scanned the frosted ridges ahead, ’buying every minute of the head start I needed to hunt alone.’

Now he was entirely on his own, moving through the neutral mountain cuts where northern jurisdictions dissolved into desolate, unmapped wilderness.

He dropped into a swift, low sprint along a narrow goat trail, his breath rising in thin white plumes against the dark starlit sky.

Every sense honed through his years of brutal conditioning remained drawn taut, tracking a strange, persistent pull that pulsed deep within his core.

It was a faint resonance in his blood, tethered to the distant, agonizing presence of his aunt.

Intertwined with that bloodline pull was a cold, oily stench that made the skin along the back of his neck tighten with instinctual revulsion.

It smelled of artificial chemicals, stale biological fluids, and the rotting corruption of an unnatural presence that did not belong in the clean mountain air.

He recognized that suffocating aura immediately, remembering the terrifying masked figure who had come for him in the testing chambers during the academy exams.

He could never forget that sickening presence, steeped in a foul, sadistic malice that had tried to drag him into darkness years ago.

The man who had tested him in the dark was somewhere ahead in these mountains, and the trail of stolen blood was leading straight toward him.

Sagiri halted on a frozen stone ledge overlooking the northern valley, crouching low while pressing his bare fingers into a patch of snow dusted across the dark rock.

The snow had melted slightly from an artificial heat source, leaving behind a faint purple crystallization that reeked of harsh, unnatural preserving fluid.

Beside the patch lay two deep boot prints, driven firmly into the loose shale from carrying the heavy, limp weight of an unconscious body.

’Rika,’ Sagiri thought, his jaw tightening as the crimson glow in his eyes flared against the shadows of the cliff.

Whoever was hauling her through the crags was keeping her sedated in stasis, preserving her life only to harvest whatever value her bloodline possessed.

Sagiri closed his eyes for a quiet moment, extending the sensory reach of the Living Memory outward into the frozen expanse.

The psychic perception of the Archive rippled across the mountain ridges like an expanding ring, sweeping across barren peaks and snowy cuts for leagues in every direction.

He tuned his hearing to the subtle frequencies of the wilderness, listening past the groaning ice for the rhythm of marching boots or hunting patrols.

Not a single living aura answered his call across the vast expanse of the frozen northern heights.

He couldn’t sense a single heartbeat or detect any footsteps trailing behind him, leaving only the hollow silence of the high crags and the whistling gale.

There were no northern outriders combing the ridges, no imperial trackers on his trail, and no friendly shadows following in his wake.

He was entirely on his own in this desolate waste, carrying the full weight of his clan’s debt without endangering another soul in the process.

’Good,’ Sagiri thought, rising to his feet from the icy ledge, ’no one else needs to bleed for this.’

He vaulted over a steep ice shelf, descending swiftly into a jagged, desolate canyon known among local outriders as the Bleeding Gorge.

Here the natural bedrock gave way to strange, unnatural scars, where heavy iron tools and massive drills had carved wide gouges directly through the stone.

Thick conduits wrapped in heavy rubber and insulated against the frost lay half-buried beneath the loose shale along the canyon floor.

They hummed with high-frequency energy, siphoning heat through the rock and running deeper into the desolate canyon ahead.

Deep ruts cut by reinforced iron wagon wheels scarred the frozen mud beside the conduits, showing where heavy transports had traveled through the mountain passes.

Sagiri followed the buried cables along the western canyon wall, keeping himself cloaked beneath the deep shadows of the jagged rock overhangs.

Fifty paces ahead, hidden beneath a natural rock arch, he discovered the shattered iron casing of a discarded heavy fuel container.

The metal was thick and foreign, stamped with unfamiliar serial markings that proved massive wealth and resources had been poured into this barren gorge.

Whoever was operating out here had been transporting prisoners and raw materials into the mountains for months without the surface world ever knowing.

Sagiri crouched low over the frozen scree, pressing his bare palm flat against the jagged surface of the bedrock.

Beneath the solid granite, his heightened senses caught a faint, rhythmic vibration pulsing steadily through the deep stone beneath him.

It was the low, subterranean rumble of massive machinery operating hundreds of paces beneath the canyon floor.

A foul draft of chemical fluids and stale air seeped upward through hairline fractures in the bedrock, carried on rising subterranean heat.

The pull in his blood and the evil stench both pointed straight downward, sinking into the solid rock beneath his boots.

Whatever lair the masked man occupied was buried deep underground beneath millions of tons of stone, completely invisible from the surface cliffs.

He did not know what the place looked like, how vast its subterranean chambers reached, or where its hidden entrance lay sealed in the rock.

The surrounding canyon offered only towering walls of black basalt, sheer frozen precipices, and crumbling shale paths lost in the freezing mountain mist.

Sagiri reached behind his shoulder, tightening his grip on the worn linen wraps around Nokai to ensure the ancient hilt was ready for an instant draw.

The dark blade resonated with his steady pulse, warming his hand through his combat wrap as the silver script along the fuller flared with faint cosmic light.

’He is down there,’ Sagiri thought, his crimson eyes fixing on the deep cracks in the gorge floor where the foul scent rose.

He rose to his feet, letting his gaze sweep across the narrowing rock cuts where the subterranean draft grew stronger with every passing pace.

The freezing wind whistled sharply against the jagged peaks above, but the bitter cold could not penetrate the quiet fire hardening in his chest.

He stepped forward into the stony labyrinth of the gorge, moving with silent, lethal purpose toward the unseen horrors buried in the deep earth below.

He would track the pull through the rock until he found the entrance, and he would make the butcher answer for every drop of blood.
