Kun Nakia launched herself from the high limestone ledge, dropping through thirty paces of empty night air without a sound.

She dragged the flat of her curved blade along a vertical rock fissure, throwing bright orange sparks into the dark as she arrested her descent.

Kicking off a narrow stone outcrop, she vaulted over the shattered remains of a ballista carriage and landed soundlessly in the pulverized shale.

The white dust swallowed her landing without an echo, her low center of gravity absorbing the kinetic shock like an apex hunting cat of Sawaka.

Around the basin, the surviving Tsanka spearmen held their breath, their bruised hands gripping the dirt as their supreme matriarch entered the killing zone alone.

The small red-headed viper around her neck hissed against the cold mountain wind, flattening its scaled head against her leather collar as it sensed the looming shadow.

Across the dry riverbed, Zaira lowered her massive triangular head, her burning crimson eyes locking onto the solitary figure advancing through the haze.

The titan did not strike immediately, recognizing the predatory cadence of an elite hunter who carried neither fear nor hesitation in her stride.

N’varu raised a hand, signaling the ten Sandshades to maintain their wide crescent formation and keep the surrounding perimeter secure.

”She won’t yield to a demonstration,” N’varu said quietly under his breath, ”the Tsanka must bleed against the wall before they accept a master.”

Nakia drew a slow breath through her teeth, feeling the icy desert air fill her lungs as she dropped into the ancient quad-pedal hunting stance of the West.

Her gauntleted fingers tightened along the leather hilts of her twin predator blades, aligning the dark steel with the subtle air currents of the canyon.

For two decades, she had hunted the apex beasts of the western wilderness, learning that every colossal monster had a rhythm, a seam, and a throat.

’A titan is still flesh,’ Nakia thought, measuring the distance across the rubble, ’sever the spinal cord behind the crest, and even a mountain falls.’

She exploded forward across the shale, her boots barely grazing the limestone rubble as she wove through the terrain in blinding zig-zag vectors.

Her speed exploited the lingering dust clouds, erasing her silhouette from the titan’s central vision before the serpent could track her path.

Zaira shifted her forward coils, the massive obsidian plates along her neck grinding together with the deep roar of shifting bedrock.

The serpent lunged downward in a swift snapping strike, her massive jaws parted to crush the dry earth where Nakia had stood a heartbeat prior.

Tons of compacted stone exploded into white powder as the titan’s snout cratered the riverbed, sending shockwaves through the shale terraces.

Nakia had anticipated the strike, sliding beneath the descending jawline with an agile drop across the shale that carried her inside the beast’s reach.

Rising from the slide in a fluid upward arc, she drove her right blade toward the softer connective tissue beneath the titan’s lower jaw.

The dark steel struck true, finding the narrow seam between two overlapping scales and biting half an inch into the ancient hide.

Potent neuro-venom hissed against the steel, sizzling with caustic energy as the dark toxin attempted to penetrate the titan’s bloodstream.

The primordial constitution of the mountain serpent proved impenetrable to mortal poisons, neutralizing the venom before it could spread past the outer hide.

Zaira felt the sting of the steel, her throat vibrating with a guttural growl that rattled loose shale from the cliffs above.

The serpent snapped her massive head sideways, the sheer rotational force generating a compressed wall of air that knocked Nakia off her feet.

Nakia twisted mid-air with feline grace, planting her boots against a boulder to redirect her momentum before she could hit the ground.

She vaulted twenty feet into the air, spinning above the sweeping curve of Zaira’s neck with her twin blades crossed before her chest.

”You are flesh and bone, beast!” Nakia shouted into the gale, her voice carrying the fierce pride of the Tsanka line.

She brought both blades down in the signature execution art of the Western Council. The twin predator cross-sever.

The twin curves of hardened steel struck the dorsal tendon behind Zaira’s third row of scales with the concussive force of a battering ram.

A shower of white sparks lit the dark basin as the blades bit deep, gouging through the fibrous ridge and drawing a spray of glowing amber blood.

The wound was shallow compared to the colossal bulk of the titan, but the sheer disrespect of the strike shattered Zaira’s lingering restraint.

The mountain serpent reared backward, rising sixty feet into the night sky until her massive silhouette blotted out the full moon above.

Her dorsal crest flared outward in incandescent crimson, crackling with raw, unbridled kinetic resonance.

The air within the canyon turned freezing cold, sucked inward toward the serpent’s widening throat like a vortex before an explosive eruption.

Nakia landed on the shale below, her eyes widening as she recognized the lethal gathering of primal power within the beast’s chest.

She dropped into a defensive crouch, crossing her twin blades before her sternum while channeling every drop of her martial energy into her armor.

Zaira unleashed the full concentrated fury of the titan’s roar directly downward into the center of the limestone basin.

The sonic shockwave struck Nakia with the force of a collapsing mountain, stripping the air from her lungs and cracking the reinforced steel of her blades.

Her predator-hide cuirass tore along its seams, the concussive pressure rupturing blood vessels and driving her knees into the dirt.

Before the stunned Kun could recover her footing or draw breath, Zaira’s massive tail surged from the swirling dust behind her.

The armored tail whipped through the air with terrifying acceleration, displacing tons of shale as it carved a brutal horizontal path across the floor.

Nakia raised the cracked remnants of her blades in a desperate attempt to parry, but mortal steel had no answer for shifting bedrock.

The colossal tail struck her square across the torso, obliterating her guard and shattering her twin weapons into iron shards.

The kinetic impact fractured three of her ribs with an audible snap, crushing her breastplate inward and launching her body into the air.

Nakia flew fifty paces across the canyon like a broken arrow, hurtling past the dazed lines of her disarmed warriors without touching the earth.

She slammed violently into the sheer limestone wall of the eastern ridge, carving a deep spiderweb crater into the ancient bedrock.

The impact dislodged a cascade of jagged stones and white dust, burying the foot of the cliff in a shower of pulverized debris.

Nakia slumped from the stone wall, tumbling into the loose scree at the base of the canyon with a heavy, hollow thud.

Her twin blades lay scattered across the riverbed in broken fragments, their dark steel dulled and bent beyond repair.

The red-headed viper slithered from the torn collar of her armor, trembling violently as it fled into a narrow crack between the rocks.

Nakia rolled onto her side, coughing violently as bright crimson blood splattered across the white limestone dust beneath her chin.

Every ragged breath sent sharp daggers of agony shooting through her cracked ribs and bruised lungs, threatening to drag her into darkness.

She dug her bloodied fingers into the gravel, trying desperately to push her torso upright to face the approaching footsteps.

But her limbs refused her commands, paralyzed by the overwhelming kinetic trauma that had broken the foundation of her physical strength.

Through her blurred vision, she saw the massive obsidian bulk of the serpent gliding forward across the cleared floor.

Zaira moved with slow, deliberate majesty, her colossal scales grinding the loose stones to powder beneath her rhythmic weight.

The titan halted five paces from the collapsed ruler, looming over her like an ancient judgment carved from living night.

Zaira lowered her massive triangular head until her burning crimson eyes were level with the wounded woman, only inches above the dust.

The hot, ozone-scented breath of the apex predator washed over Nakia’s face, carrying the primordial heat of the deep southern sands.

Zaira did not strike to kill, holding her lethal fangs inches away in a silent, terrifying display of absolute dominance.

N’varu stepped through the settling haze, his crescent blade sheathed as he stood beside the towering shoulder of the beast.

He looked down at the broken Kun of the West, his dark eyes steady and devoid of mockery.

”You have fought your duel, Kun Nakia,” N’varu spoke, his voice cutting through the ringing silence of the canyon.

”Your army is broken, your weapons are shattered, and the Living Memory still marches toward the North.”

Nakia spat a mouthful of dark blood into the dirt, clutching her fractured ribs as she looked up into the blazing crimson gaze of the titan.

For the first time in her life as ruler of the Tsanka, she understood the terrifying truth of the South.

There was no army in the West that could stand against the storm that had awakened in the desert.
