The wind rolling across the eastern border plains carried the dry scent of flint and iron, stirring the dust between two silent armies.

For leagues along the boundary dividing the central steppes from the southern sands, twenty thousand spears stood upright beneath the pale morning sky.

The Southern Host had erected no timber palisades or defensive trenches, arraying their battle ranks in broad nonagons five hundred paces deep beneath the amber banners of N’Faya.

General Zafaru sat motionless atop his armored war mount at the vanguard, his weathered posture matching the sheer stone cliffs of Thazir.

Across his broad shoulders rested his great recurve horn-bow, while his dark eyes watched two foreign rulers riding forward across the neutral border gravel.

Opposite the southern lines, the combined host of the Eastern Council and the Central Plains formed an immense crescent of polished plate and fluttering silk banners.

Grand Zorath Linga Maaka of the Eastern Cilsi tribes reined in his warhorse first, his ceremonial robes stiff with gold embroidery over fine mail.

Beside him rode Chief Tendai Mbeki of Molakwa, his heavy engineering cuirass etched with interlocking gear motifs, followed by twelve senior captains resting hands upon their broadswords.

The warhorses of the northern coalition shifted uneasily on the hardpan earth, catching the distant scent of desert ozone drifting from the southern ranks.

Linga Maaka cleared his throat, letting his voice carry across the open steppe with practiced diplomatic authority.

”General Zafaru, the High Council of Tagayia requires an immediate explanation for this hostile mobilization along our sovereign frontier.”

The eastern chief gestured sharply toward the southern nonagons, his fingers tightening on his velvet reins.

”Sagiri, the Chief of the South, broke northern military jurisdiction, struck down Grand Chief Zaka Asakana, and left Galka in political chaos.”

”We demand the Chief of the South be surrendered immediately to face the judgment of the Convergence Hall in Alika City.”

The Kai of the South did not blink, his face showing neither anger nor surprise as the desert wind whipped his dark mantle.

Zafaru leaned forward in his saddle, his voice carrying the deep, resonant gravity of grinding bedrock.

”A request does not arrive with twenty thousand spears drawn to my boundary markers, Grand Zorath.”

The southern general pointed his gauntleted finger across the border stones, his tone hardening with cold certainty.

”Authority ends at my border, and your outriders crossed it before sunrise.”

”Order your men back five leagues before you dare speak of peace on southern soil.”

Chief Tendai Mbeki urged his mount forward half a pace, raising a placating hand to prevent the confrontation from escalating further.

”General, you are a seasoned commander and know continental treaties,” Mbeki spoke with calm reason.

”Even the Chief of the South cannot overturn an entire northern hierarchy without answering to the Ten High Councils.”

Zafaru cut him off with an icy stare that made the veteran forge-master freeze mid-sentence.

”Sagiri is no ordinary claimant under northern charters,” Zafaru declared, his words echoing across the plains.

”He is the Supreme Chief of the South.”

The Kai raised his left hand high into the air, signaling the southern vanguard behind him.

Twenty thousand southern warriors shifted their weight in flawless unison, slamming iron-shod spear butts against the earth with a thunderous thud.

Front-rank archers drew composite sand-bows, nocking broadhead arrows dipped in viper venom while holding their bowstrings to their cheekbones in absolute stillness.

Linga Maaka’s warhorse reared in panic, forcing the eastern guard captains to draw their shields and form an emergency ring around their chief.

Zafaru lowered his arm, delivering the final decree of the Southern Sovereign Council.

”The South has issued a sacred decree, giving you until nightfall to return Supreme Chief Sagiri alive, untouched, and unhindered.”

The Kai turned his war mount back toward his command pavilion, leaving his words hanging heavy in the freezing morning air.

”If the sun touches the western ridge without our Supreme Chief, the South will march across every northern fortress to the gates of Galka.”

Four hundred leagues to the northwest, within the jagged limestone basin bordering the wild lands of Tsanka, the tension hung equally sharp.

Along the jagged perimeter cliffs, three thousand western ridge-hunters held the high ground with notched hunting bows and weighted grappling chains.

Beside them crouched elite Kafika beast-tamers, restraining snarling war-panthers and razor-hyaenas on spiked iron chains.

At the highest apex of the western ridge stood Kun Nakia of Tsanka, her predator-hide cloak whipping in the freezing mountain gale.

Her calculating amber eyes studied the dry wash of the basin below, searching for any sign of weakness in the enemy’s formation.

Nestled in the center of the limestone canyon sat the southern camp, completely undisturbed by defensive ditches or timber barricades.

At the heart of the clearing coiled the colossal form of Zaira, her obsidian scales reflecting deep bronze undertones beneath the mountain sun.

The rhythmic breathing of the mountain titan serpent echoed against the canyon walls like the slow, deep heartbeat of the earth itself.

Surrounding the titan stood the ten Sandshades of the Shaa’meri clan, their gray cloaks blending into the limestone gravel in an unbroken diamond perimeter.

Kun Nakia stepped to the edge of the limestone precipice, her clear voice ringing down the canyon like a hunting horn.

”Show me the Chief of the South, or I will treat this southern detachment as an invading host and order my archers to blanket the canyon!”

From the massive shadow of Zaira’s coiled flank, N’varu stepped forward into the open sunlight.

He walked fifty paces out onto the white gravel, stopping with calm grace as hundreds of western bowstrings drew taut along the cliffs.

N’varu folded his hands into his linen sleeves, looking up at the Western Kun without a trace of fear.

”You have enough warriors along those ridges to fill this canyon with iron, Kun Nakia, yet you hold your fire while tracking our tracks.”

The Sandshade leader raised his chin toward the northern mountain passes, his voice cutting through the whistling wind.

”The Chief of the South is hunting the phantom who destroyed N’folu sixteen years ago, and stopping his allies will not halt his blade.”

”You are watching a shadow while the continent prepares to burn beneath your feet.”

Kun Nakia tightened her grip on the leather hilts of her twin curved blades, her amber gaze shifting toward the western horizon.

The sun had already begun its steady descent toward the rugged mountain crests, counting down the final hours to dusk.

Across both borders, the countdown to continental war had begun, and only nightfall would decide the fate of the realm.
