Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

He had not seen this.

The moment the stage lit up, something shifted. Not just the lights or the sound or the smoke that curled up from the edges of the stage. Something in the air itself changed, the particular electricity of a room full of people all deciding at the same moment that something was about to happen.

And then Olivia was there.

She looked completely different in stage makeup and costume, the red hair she usually wore down or pulled back now deliberately styled, the costume catching the light, her posture carrying something that had nothing to do with the nervous girl who’d texted him about throwing up the night before.

On stage, Olivia was even more beautiful and what others may say perfect.

The group moved with the kind of synchronized precision that made twelve days of nine-formations-before-breakfast actually make sense. The music hit properly, the way music hit in spaces designed for it, and Olivia’s voice cut through the opening number with a clarity that made the back of Sean’s neck prickle.

He wasn’t the only one who felt it. Beside him, Kwon had gone completely still, his hands folded in his lap, his eyes on the stage with the fixed attention of someone who’d seen this a thousand times in rehearsal and was watching it become real for the first time.

About four minutes into the second song, Olivia turned toward the front of the stage.

Her eyes found the front row automatically, the way performers found anchoring points. Then they found him specifically, and for exactly one second, in the middle of a choreographed sequence she’d run two hundred times, something personal crossed her face, something that had nothing to do with the performance and everything to do with the person sitting in the first row in a Brioni suit watching her like she was the only thing in the room worth looking at.

She smiled.

Not the stage smile. The real one, small and involuntary and gone almost immediately because she was a professional and she had formations to complete.

Sean smiled back.

His phone, silent in his pocket, buzzed.

He didn’t reach for his phone. He kept his eyes on the stage.

Beside him, Kwon made a very small sound that might have been approval, might have been emotion contained to its absolute minimum allowable expression, and cleared his throat.

”She’s on tonight,” said Kwon, very quietly, like he was saying it to himself rather than Sean.

”Yeah,” said Sean. ”She really is.”

After

The applause started before the last note finished and didn’t really stop. The group took their bows, Olivia in the center, her face flushed and brilliant, and Sean watched her look out into the audience with the specific expression of someone who had worked for something a long time and was only now allowing themselves to feel what it meant to have it arrive.

The label representatives, four of them in a cluster two rows back, were already leaning toward each other.

Sean’s Business Insight fired quietly. The room read immediately, the energy of people who had come looking for a reason to say yes and had just found several. Kwon was going to walk into the right conversation in the next twenty minutes, and if nobody disrupted the natural momentum of the room, whatever came of tonight was going to be significant.

Kwon was already standing, straightening his jacket for what Sean estimated was the sixth time, scanning the room with the same professional alertness.

”The men in the gray suits two rows back,” said Sean.

Kwon glanced. ”Representatives.”

”They liked it,” said Sean. ”The one on the left has been typing on his phone since the third song. That’s either notes or a text to someone above him.”

Kwon looked at him. ”How do you know the difference.”

”The way he’s holding the phone,” said Sean. ”Notes, you glance down. Texting someone important, you keep looking up to make sure you’re not missing anything. He’s been looking up.”

Kwon processed that for exactly one second. Then he adjusted his jacket, for the seventh time, and moved toward the aisle with the particular purposeful calm of a man walking into a negotiation he’d been preparing for twenty years.

He paused beside Sean. ”Don’t disappear with her before I’ve finished,” he said, without looking back. ”I need twenty minutes.”

”Take thirty,” said Sean.

Kwon almost said something. Decided against it. Kept walking.

Olivia found Sean before he found her, which he should have expected.

She slipped around the side of the stage, still wearing her performance outfit. The stage lights had long since faded, but they still seemed to cling to her. Her makeup was flawless, her cheeks faintly flushed, and her eyes carried that unmistakable mixture of adrenaline and relief that only came after giving everything you had.

The moment she saw him, the rest of the room seemed to disappear.

She walked straight through the small crowd gathered near the stage, barely acknowledging the congratulations and conversations around her. Her eyes never left Sean.

He stayed where he was, a small smile tugging at the corner of his lips as she stopped in front of him.

For a few seconds, neither of them spoke.

They simply looked at each other.

”You were in the front row,” she said softly.

”I told you I would be,” Sean replied.

She laughed under her breath, shaking her head.

”You were actually in the front row,” she repeated, her voice quieter this time, as though she was still convincing herself it had really happened. ”I saw you during the third song... and for a second I almost forgot the choreography.”

”You didn’t.”

”I didn’t,” she admitted with a sheepish smile. ”But it was dangerously close.”

”So this is my fault?” Sean asked, a smile tugging at the corner of his lips.

Olivia let out a soft, happy laugh.
