Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

”I used what was necessary,” said Sean.

”Yes,” said Vivian. ”Precisely.”

Another pause.

Sean leaned forward in his chair, his elbows on the desk, and when he spoke again his voice was quiet but carried something in it that he didn’t have to perform, because it was simply true.

”Vivian,” he said. ”I need you to hear something clearly.”

”Go ahead,” she said.

”We have an agreement,” said Sean. ”You signed it, I have it, and I believe you keep your word in the specific way you keep it. But I want to be direct with you about what happens if that ever changes.” He paused, not for effect but because he wanted the words to land exactly right. ”If anything happens to anyone else connected to me that I care about. If anything happens that I can trace back to you or anyone working under you, I will use everything I have, and I have more than I showed you in that room, to take apart everything you’ve spent twenty-five years building. The project. The holdings. The legal infrastructure. Everything. I will do it calmly, methodically, and completely and i will make sure you and everyone you care about dead, this isn’t a threat .”

The line was silent.

Sean could hear Vivian breathing on the other end, slow and even, and he knew she was processing not just what he’d said but how he’d said it, the specific quality of a threat delivered without heat, which was always the more credible kind.

”I believe you are capable of doing everything you talked about,” said Vivian, after a long moment. Her voice had changed, some layer of professional performance stripped away, something more direct underneath. ”And I want you to know that I wouldn’t dream of violating the agreement. Not because of what you just described, though I take it seriously. But because what happened this week has clarified something for me about who I’m dealing with, and people I’ve accurately assessed are not people I move against carelessly.”

”Good,” said Sean.

”I mean it when I say I can see what you’re going to become,” said Vivian. Her voice carried something that wasn’t flattery, something more like the specific, detached admiration of someone who recognized a pattern they’d studied for a long time. ”I’ve dealt with powerful people for twenty-five years. Recognizing the early version of that is something I’ve developed a particular eye for. You are, without question, something I’ve never seen at eighteen before. And I’ve thought about that a great deal since our dinner.”

”What’s your point,” said Sean.

”My point,” said Vivian, ”is that the arrangement we have right now, adversarial but stable, is the least efficient version of what this could be. You have resources I don’t understand yet. I have infrastructure and experience and reach you haven’t fully mapped. An alliance between us would be worth considerably more to both parties than the current situation.”

”We aren’t allies,” said Sean.

”No,” said Vivian. ”Not yet.”

”Not yet isn’t a promise,” said Sean.

”No,” she agreed. ”It’s an observation. I’m rather good at those.” A small pause, and then something happened that Sean hadn’t heard from her in either meeting or any of their phone calls before tonight. She laughed. Small, brief, genuinely amused, the kind of sound that belonged to a real person rather than a position being maintained. ”Goodnight, Mr. Miller.”

Sean ended the call without responding to that.

He set his phone down on the desk and sat in the quiet apartment for a long moment.

Then he closed his phone and looked out the window.

Tomorrow, the showcase.

After everything that had just happened, he was finally ready for something that was simply good.

The Next Day

Sean stood in front of his wardrobe at four in the afternoon and took it seriously.

Not just getting dressed. Actually taking it seriously.

He hadn’t had a reason to dress this carefully since the freshman party, and that had been about making a statement. Tonight was different. Tonight he wanted to look like someone worth being seen next to, not because of power or money or any of the things that had dominated the last two weeks, but because Olivia deserved to have someone in the front row who looked like they understood the occasion.

He went with the black suit Vanessa had called the statement piece, the one that said confidence without announcing itself. The deep burgundy shirt underneath. The Italian leather shoes that caught light exactly right. He adjusted the collar, looked at himself in the mirror for a long moment, and made one final decision.

The watch. The one he’d bought almost as an afterthought at Élite Fashion, the one Vanessa had placed in the display case without comment and he’d added to the pile without really thinking about it. He put it on now and looked at his wrist.

”Okay,” he said, to nobody in particular.

He picked up his phone and sent the text he’d drafted the night before.

James. The jeweler on Fifth. I need you to pick up the order under my name before nine tonight. The full amount is transferred. Don’t be late.

James’s response came back in seconds.

Already there, sir. Will have it to you before dinner without fail.

Sean looked at the notification from his bank confirming the transfer he’d made that morning. One million dollars, sent to cover a necklace he’d ordered three days ago, a Thursday afternoon decision made quietly while everything else was still in motion, the specific thought arriving fully formed: when this is over and she’s on that stage, I want something ready.

[1,000,000 dollars sent to James for purchase]

[Balance: $1,380,480]

[2,000,000 dollars received]

[New Balance: $3,380,480]

He’d been at 47 favorability for Olivia when he sent it. The 2x baseline. He filed it away without dwelling on it, pulled his jacket on, and went downstairs.
