Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

Sean thought about the system’s rebate mechanic. About spending money to get more money. About what it actually meant to use resources, whether money or information or legal documents, in the service of something that mattered.

He checked his phone one more time before they reached the building.

A text from Olivia. Day three of twelve. Kwon says our timing improved forty percent from yesterday. He didn’t say it was because of you specifically but I know it was because I slept properly for the first time this week.

Sean smiled despite everything else weighing on him.

Nine more days, he typed back.

Nine more days, she confirmed. Then dinner. You promised.

I remember.

He put his phone away as James pulled up to the building.

Walsh’s car in its spot. The building standing exactly as it had for thirty years. Makima’s window on the ground floor catching the morning light.

Sean got out of the car, the envelope under his arm, and walked inside.

He knocked on Makima’s office door.

”Come in,” she said.

He opened the door. She was at her desk with her usual morning organization around her, the particular competent order of someone who ran things the way her father had taught her.

She looked up. Saw the envelope. Her expression shifted slightly.

”What is that,” she said.

Sean walked in and set it on her desk.

”Your father was right,” he said. ”About the building having an enemy it couldn’t see.” He looked at her steadily. ”I found out why they’ve been trying to take it for forty years. And I think I found the reason they haven’t been able to.”

Makima looked at the envelope for a long moment. Then she looked up at him with those blue eyes that had seen three months of real fear and come out the other side.

”Tell me,” she said.

Sean sat down across from her and did exactly that.

==========

Makima didn’t speak for a long time after Sean finished explaining.

She sat behind her desk with her hands folded in front of her, looking at the envelope he’d placed there, and he watched her process everything the way she processed most things, from the inside out, quietly, without giving anything away until she was ready.

The office was quiet. Outside, the building made its usual morning sounds. A door somewhere. Water in a pipe. The specific soundtrack of a place that had been occupied and lived in for thirty years.

”Forty years,” said Makima .

”At least,” said Sean.

”Someone has been trying to take this building for forty years.” She said it flatly, not as a question, just establishing it as a fact she was willing to accept.

”The block, specifically,” said Sean. ”The building is part of something larger. But yes.”

Makima looked at the envelope. ”And my father knew.”

”He suspected,” said Sean. ”He didn’t have the name or the full picture. He just knew something kept coming back.”

She was quiet again. Sean watched her work through it, the particular silence of someone who was restructuring a story they’d thought they understood.

”He used to say things sometimes,” said Makima, more to herself than to him. ”When things went wrong with the building, with inspections, with the zoning dispute that took three years to resolve. He’d say it was the same hand. Different gloves but the same hand.” She paused. ”I thought he was being paranoid. He wasn’t a paranoid man generally, but I thought this was the one thing he couldn’t see clearly because he was too close to it.”

”He was right,” said Sean.

”He was right,” Makima repeated. Something moved through her expression, complicated and private. ”He spent thirty years fighting something he named correctly and couldn’t prove. And then he died thinking he’d kept it at bay long enough for me to be safe.”

The room was quiet for a moment.

”He did keep it at bay,” said Sean. ”The building is still here. You’re still here.”

Makima looked up at him. ”And now you have a sixty-year-old document that might change everything.”

”Might,” said Sean carefully. ”I need an attorney to look at it before I know what we’re actually holding.”

”What do you think we’re holding,” said Makima.

Sean thought about the specific language of the addendum. The clause that didn’t expire. The land rights that survived the demolition of the original structure. The particular careful thinking of a woman who made dresses and kept every document from every transaction because she’d learned early that paper was the only protection poor people could count on.

”I think,” said Sean, ”that someone has been trying to assemble eleven properties on a four-block radius for forty years and they’re still one piece short. And I think that piece isn’t the document in that envelope. It’s this building.”

Makima looked at him steadily.

”The conditional clause on Patricia Moyer’s family property means Vivian can’t complete whatever she’s building even if she gets everything else,” said Sean. ”But this building is the one she’s been after the longest. The one Harlan Cross originally identified as his primary target. If she can’t get it, the whole thing falls apart regardless.”

”Why this building specifically,” said Makima.

”I don’t know yet,” said Sean honestly. ”That’s still missing.”

Makima was quiet for another moment. Then she reached out and touched the edge of the envelope lightly, not opening it, just acknowledging it.

”What do you need from me,” she said.

”Time,” said Sean. ”A few more days while the attorney reviews the document and while I figure out what Vivian’s actual plan for the block is. And I need you to keep doing exactly what you’ve been doing. Running this building. Being here.”

”That I can manage,” said Makima.

She looked up at him with something that was equal parts fear and resolve and something else he didn’t have a precise name for. Then she stood up, came around the desk, and before he could say anything else she put her arms around him, her head against his shoulder, a hug that was brief and fierce and entirely unpracticed.
