American Football: King of the Bay Area

Lu Ke navigated his car slowly through the Wednesday morning traffic in San Francisco. Lech, seated in the passenger seat, was making intermittent small talk with him.

It was small talk in the truest sense of the phrase.

They talked about Lu Ke’s grueling training regimen, especially the strength and weight-gaining work he was currently focused on. They also discussed his surprisingly exciting life on the practice squad, a hectic but fulfilling hustle between his regular studies and training. They even touched on Lu Ke’s reasons for majoring in journalism and some amusing stories from his internship interviews.

They talked about Lech’s harrowing experiences dealing with troublesome athletes—stories that, despite the chaos, were surprisingly entertaining, revealing the colorful life of an agent. They discussed Lech’s hopes and dreams for retirement, with Lech honestly admitting he wasn’t quite ready to give up work. They even laughed about the embarrassing blunders from the early days of Lech’s career, hilarious moments that painted a picture of his past.

A good deal of their conversation was about football, but even more was about Lu Ke and Lech themselves—about their own life experiences.

While it could all be dismissed as small talk, from another perspective, it was about getting to know one another. They were meeting as equals, as potential friends, growing from strangers to acquaintances through their back-and-forth. For an agent and a player, this was a necessary process and a promising start.

Everyone knows professional sports agents exist, but few people truly understand what their job entails.

An agent’s daily work is incredibly complex. They need to help athletes develop their marketability and handle day-to-day matters. They also assist with contract negotiations, asset management, team transfers, investment strategies, and all other sports-related affairs—and even matters in their personal lives.

First and foremost, an agent’s most important job is undoubtedly contract negotiation and commercial value management.

As everyone knows, professional teams can be ruthless Demons that will eat you alive and not spit out the bones. They absolutely refuse to budge easily on things like salary management, contract details, and core interests.

An excellent agent will assess a player based on a comprehensive index of their age, stats, injury history, and performance trends to establish a precise target before entering negotiations with the team. They will also leverage comparisons with other players of a similar caliber to secure a high-value contract for their client within a reasonable framework.

A bad agent, on the other hand, might make exorbitant demands and poor judgments. The worst-case scenario is that they could completely derail the career of a promising rookie.

Furthermore, a top agent’s role in a player’s career planning is also crucial. They strategize based on their client’s style and characteristics, selecting endorsements, media interviews, and corporate sponsors to truly maximize the player’s commercial value. David Beckham’s ability to become one of the highest-paid soccer players in the world wasn’t just based on his on-field performance.

Take Peyton Manning and Tom Brady, for example. This pair of lifelong rivals in the Alliance are just as competitive when it comes to endorsements.

Manning’s annual endorsement income reached twelve million, while Brady’s was only seven million.

However, a closer look at the details reveals that all of Manning’s endorsements were closely tied to the sports industry and were short-term contracts; once Manning retired, those deals would become void. Brady, on the other hand, endorsed fashion products like watches and apparel, almost all on long-term contracts. In other words, advertisers were more willing to invest long-term in the handsome Brady.

These details showcase the agent’s role—irreplaceable and crucial. Since their work involves extensive legal negotiations and calculations, many law school graduates transition into careers as agents; it’s a viable career path.

Secondly, agents also need to manage a player’s finances and private life. In other words, it’s comprehensive, all-encompassing oversight.

For professional players, entering the Alliance means facing intense competition and maintaining a rigorous daily training schedule, which requires immense self-discipline. At the same time, they are thrust into the spotlight, becoming the center of public attention. It’s easy to get lost in the glitz and glamor of fame and fortune.

This is where an agent’s importance truly becomes apparent.

Take William Moore, for example. In the 2009 draft, he was selected by the Atlanta Falcons with the 55th pick in the second round. It was a meteoric rise, and after landing a sizable contract, he was ecstatic and began to spend lavishly.

He bought a mansion, a Cadillac, and countless sound systems and video game consoles. It wasn’t until his credit card bill came due that he realized he had racked up massive debt, and that his take-home pay from his rookie contract was far less than he had imagined. In the end, he had to rely on help from friends just to get by, and his agent was forced to start managing William Moore’s daily spending.

Another example is Michael Vick. The quarterback entered the Alliance in 2001 and joined the Atlanta Falcons—yes, the Falcon Team again. He pioneered the era of the mobile quarterback, completely changing the tactical landscape of the Alliance, only to find himself embroiled in a crisis in the spring of 2007.

That year, Vic was implicated in a dogfighting ring. It was later proven that he was involved in a series of core issues, from betting on the fights to animal abuse and the disappearance of animals, with activities dating back as far as 2001. The case progressed quickly. Animal rights organizations protested relentlessly, and the media exposed Vic’s history as an avid and unrepentant gambler. The NFL announced that Vic would be suspended indefinitely.

After the scandal broke, Vic issued an apology, but it was no use. He then became entangled in legal disputes, followed by a bankruptcy crisis. Even the owner of the Atlanta Falcons publicly demanded that he repay his signing bonus.

In the end, Vic missed the optimal window to plead guilty and was sentenced to twenty-three months in prison. He also lost the support of his fans and was effectively ostracized by the Alliance, his reputation completely ruined.

After that incident, professional agents began to tighten their management and supervision of players, even extending it to their daily training. They would push players to complete their daily workouts with discipline and regularity and to stay away from detrimental lifestyle habits.

An excellent, top-tier agent can even extend a star player’s career, while a bad agent could very well destroy a promising rookie’s future before it even begins.

Of course, can a player do all this work themselves? Absolutely!

A player can negotiate with the team, contact sponsors, complete their training, manage their finances, and arrange their own schedule. They can handle, oversee, and complete everything personally. If they can do it all themselves, why pay a fee to hire an agent?

A football agent’s commission is three percent. In other words, three percent of a player’s total income must be paid out as the agent’s commission. That’s no small sum. As a result, there are indeed quite a few players in the Alliance who refuse to hire an agent and choose to represent themselves.

Lu Ke had negotiated and signed his own rookie contract.

However, as the saying goes, ”every profession has its experts.” The reason agents exist and play such a crucial role is that they can map out a player’s career path, unlocking greater commercial value and future potential.

More importantly, outsourcing all the trivial, mundane matters to an agent saves a player a lot of hassle, allowing them to focus their energy on the field. Even off the field, they can enjoy their downtime more fully instead of getting into unpleasant disputes with their team or sponsors over minor financial gains.

In this commercial Era of ”amusing ourselves to death” and profit-above-all, agents are often depicted as Vampires.

Of course, they want their clients to perform better to secure greater profits. But truly great agents understand one thing clearly: a player is not just a cash cow, but also a partner who journeys with them through the important stages of life—

the draft, the practice field, home games, press conferences, moments of injury, team transfers, and so on.

Only by building a private and intimate connection can an agent and player bring out the best in each other. Take Peyton Manning’s agent, Tom Condon, for example.

In the NFL Alliance, top agents have inextricable ties to Hollywood. Among Hollywood’s five major agencies, two giants—Innovative Artists Agency (CAA) and International Innovation Management Company (IMG)—are also the most powerful sports agencies in the Alliance.

Condon is a titan at Innovative Artists Agency.

When Manning was still a college player, a then-unknown Condon became his agent. This marked the beginning of the dynasty Condon would build. He accompanied Manning through thirteen years of his professional career. This year, as Manning struggled with injuries, he remained by his partner’s side, seeing him through his darkest days.

Today, top quarterbacks like Eli Manning, Tony Romo, Philip Rivers, and Drew Brees are all Condon’s clients. The contracts he manages alone are worth a staggering one point three billion US dollars, making him the undisputed leader of the entire industry.

The players made Condon, and Condon made the players.

It is precisely because of this special bond between agent and player that the foundation of a long-term partnership is built on knowledge, understanding, and support. It’s an employer-employee relationship, but it’s also a partnership, requiring effort and commitment from both sides. In a way, they could be called family, though not by blood.

This was Lu Ke and Lech’s first meeting. It wasn’t yet about cooperation or deep understanding, just small talk. The first step was to break through the initial awkwardness of strangers and become friends. Judging by their hour-long conversation, they were getting along splendidly.

In the distance, Candlestick Park came into view, and their conversation began to wind down.
