American Football: King of the Bay Area

”The San Francisco 49ers’ receiving corps is facing a serious issue with dropped passes today. Williams, Newman, and Gene have each had a drop, which has severely limited the quarterback’s effectiveness.”

Today, Fox Television was once again broadcasting the game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys. Kirk Charleston was back as the play-by-play announcer, and seated next to him in the commentary booth was Teddy Williams.

After Kirk shared his opinion, Teddy nodded emphatically in agreement. ”That last pass to Gene—a twenty-three-yarder—if he’d completed that catch, it wouldn’t have just been a fresh set of downs, it would’ve put them near midfield, which would have been enough to relieve the pressure on the 49ers’ offense. Unfortunately, after making the catch, he got butterfingers and dropped it. He was even lucky the opponent didn’t come away with an interception.”

Kirk picked up the commentary. ”You can see how the Cowboys’ targeted defensive scheme has really stifled the 49ers’ offensive rhythm. Now we’ll just have to see when the 49ers can find their footing again. Alright, let’s turn our attention to this drive.” As he spoke, the San Francisco 49ers’ offense took the field once more.

Kirk and Teddy both fell silent for a moment, looking down through the glass window of the booth to watch the game unfold on the field below.

”Pistol Formation. The snap! Lu Ke takes a quick drop-back. The Cowboys still aren’t bringing the blitz; the pocket protection is solid. Lu Ke is scanning, scanning... The 49ers’ number eighty-five, Tight End Vernon Davis, is running an aggressive route! He pushes straight upfield, cuts left, stops on a dime, then bursts forward again—beautiful! He’s torn open a gap!”

”There’s the seam! A passing lane! Lu Ke sees the space—it was just a fleeting window, but Lu Ke spots the opportunity and fires immediately! A twelve-yard pass! It’s slightly off-target but still within Davis’s catch radius. Davis reaches for the ball! He makes the catch! Twelve yards! A twelve-yard completion!”

”Oh no! Davis drops it! Butterfingers! The ball pops straight out, and number thirty-two, Cowboys cornerback Orlando Scandrick, catches it! My God, an interception! It’s an interception! The San Francisco 49ers’ quarterback has just thrown the first interception of his professional career!”

Statistically speaking, all interceptions are charged to the quarterback. The statisticians don’t distinguish between an interception caused by the quarterback’s own error and one caused by a receiver’s mistake; they are all uniformly recorded under the quarterback’s name. This is because it’s a statistic tracked exclusively for quarterbacks.

And so, Lu Ke’s career interception count went from zero to one.

The entire Candlestick Park fell quiet. The fifty thousand 49ers fans stared in disbelief, their faces a mask of frustration and disappointment. The offense had just turned the ball over with an interception, killing the drive. In contrast, the twenty thousand Cowboy fans erupted, their cheers echoing like thunder as they jumped, hugged, and celebrated.

At any point in a game, a turnover is a massive momentum swing. For the team that loses the ball, it’s a devastating blow; for the team that gains possession, it’s a huge boost.

To put it in perspective with some stats from the 2010 season: the player in the Alliance with the most interceptions was Ed Reed of the Baltimore Ravens, with a total of eight, an average of 0.5 per game. The quarterback in the Alliance who threw the most interceptions was Eli Manning of the New York Giants, with a total of twenty-five, an average of 1.6 per game.

At the same time, in the 2010 season, the team in the Alliance that turned the ball over the most through interceptions and fumbles was the New York Giants, with a total of forty-two, averaging 2.6 per game. And the team that forced the most turnovers was also the New York Giants, with a total of thirty-nine, averaging 2.4 per game.

This just goes to show how impactful interceptions and fumbles are. Limiting turnovers is a fundamental part of being a top team. A single turnover can completely alter the course and outcome of a game.

At that moment, it was heaven for the Dallas Cowboys and hell for the San Francisco 49ers. After that blow, the 49ers’ offense slid further into a bottomless abyss, showing no signs of recovery.

After securing the interception, Orlando Scandrick tried to run it back. Fortunately, the 49ers’ Michael Crabtree and Kyle Williams were alert, reacting instantly to bring Scandrick down on the spot and preventing the disaster from getting any worse.

After getting to his feet, Crabtree roared at Vernon Davis, ”What the fuck were you spacing out for! You turned the ball over! And you just stood there feeling sorry for yourself?! Fuck! Fuck!”

After dropping the ball, Davis had just grabbed his head in frustration instead of immediately getting back on defense. If Crabtree and Williams hadn’t been there to make the tackle, Scandrick would have started his return—the interception happened at their own twenty-six-yard line, meaning the Cowboys player only needed to run twenty-six yards to get into the San Francisco 49ers’ end zone for a touchdown.

A pick-six.

It’s one of the most devastating and demoralizing plays in football, an incredible blow to the offense’s morale. But Davis was just standing there, sulking? Unbelievable!

Davis angrily shoved Crabtree away. ”Quiet, Michael! I don’t need you to lecture me!” Then, his gaze flickered over to Lu Ke. He didn’t confront him directly, but muttered under his breath, ”If he hadn’t thrown the ball so damn hard, how could I have dropped it? I’m not some first-year rookie! Shit! Fuck off! Don’t pin all the blame on me.”

Davis didn’t bother to lower his voice, so Lu Ke heard every word. But Lu Ke ignored him.

’Davis was just a pathetic clown. Why didn’t he mention how he’d consistently refused to catch my passes in practice, which is why he couldn’t judge the velocity of my throws, resulting in the drop? Why didn’t he mention that he’d lost focus while trying to make the catch, that his hands weren’t in the proper position, causing the drop? Why didn’t he mention that butterfingers is an undeniable mistake for any player?’

Lu Ke completely ignored Davis. He unbuckled his chinstrap, loosening the tight hold around his neck and finally allowing himself to breathe. ’The team is facing a much bigger problem, but that idiot is still trying to shift the blame and curse everyone out. He’s completely out of his mind.’

’If they lost the game, everyone would be responsible. Obviously, the quarterback is always the lightning rod for criticism. But did Davis really think the reporters wouldn’t mention his dropped pass? Idiot.’

Lu Ke forced himself to calm down. ’The entire offense is out of sync today. The receivers are part of the problem, but so am I.’

’It wasn’t a problem with the tactics. The play-calling itself was fine. But in this game, under the relentless pressure from the Cowboys, the passing rhythm, receiving rhythm, running game, defensive reads—nothing seemed to click. One mistake, then two... and before they could even react, they’d landed in their current, awkward position—’

’The second quarter was already halfway over, and the San Francisco 49ers still hadn’t managed a single first down.’

’There were always excuses, of course. For example, the Dallas Cowboys’ offense was on the field for a very long time. The San Francisco 49ers’ defense just couldn’t stop them, preventing their own offense from getting on the field. The Cowboys had launched six drives in total, four of which lasted more than four minutes. This meant Lu Ke had barely had any time on the field, only taking to it a mere four times.’

’But right now, excuses were useless. If they just stood around feeling sorry for themselves and giving up, victory wouldn’t just fall into their laps.’

’So, I need to calm down, re-evaluate the big picture, and seize the initiative again.’

Fortunately, while the San Francisco 49ers’ offense was a complete mess, the Dallas Cowboys’ offense was all sizzle and no steak. So far, the Dallas Cowboys had only managed one touchdown and one field goal, holding a temporary 10-0 lead. The gap hadn’t grown insurmountable.

Back on the sideline, Lu Ke hadn’t even had a moment to collect his thoughts when the twenty thousand Dallas Cowboys fans erupted in celebration once again—Romo had scored a touchdown.

The interception had given them the ball at the opponent’s twenty-six-yard line, and it only took two plays for the offense to enter the red zone. Romo, who had been playing well the entire first half, did not miss this golden opportunity. He capped off a five-play drive—three passes and two runs—by connecting with number eighty-one wide receiver Laurent Robinson for his second touchdown of the game.

The subsequent extra point was good. The Dallas Cowboys had capitalized on the San Francisco 49ers’ mistake, changing the score to 17-0. The situation suddenly looked grim.

The atmosphere on the field remained tense, fierce, and chaotic, giving Lu Ke no time or space to clear his head. Ultimately, just like Logan and Marcus, Lu Ke was simply far too inexperienced. As first-year rookies, their grasp of the on-field situation was still far too naive.

Even with the system, there was no substitute for experience.

In the final minutes of the first half, the San Francisco 49ers finally earned their first first down of the game when Lu Ke connected with Crabtree against tight coverage. However, the drive stalled before they could even reach midfield, not even getting them into field goal range.

As Romo’s final pass fell incomplete, the Dallas Cowboys ran out the remaining time on the clock. The referee then blew the halftime whistle. Holding a commanding 17-0 lead, the visiting Cowboys marched confidently back to their locker room.

As for the San Francisco 49ers, the situation was looking increasingly grim. Were they headed for an utter rout, completely unable to fight back?

For the commentators in the broadcast booth, it was practically a holiday party. This was especially true for Charles Davis, who could finally unleash the frustration and anger he had been suppressing for a full week!
