American Football: King of the Bay Area

”Crabtree vs. Scandrick.”

Scandrick was completely focused. He was in top form today, having made the game’s only interception so far—the primary reason the Dallas Cowboys still held the lead. His attention hadn’t wavered for a second. He kept his eyes locked on Crabtree, sticking to him in tight coverage.

But Scandrick still had to spare a glance out of the corner of his eye at the quarterback, tracking the football’s arc and angle.

In the fraction of a second it took him to react, Crabtree had created half an arm’s length of separation. At the same time, Scandrick registered the pass’s trajectory—it was a bullet, spiraling at high speed toward the space over Crabtree’s right shoulder.

Scandrick made his read instantly and dove, trying to break up the pass. But he immediately realized the ball was too far away. His fingertips couldn’t reach it. Even throwing his entire body forward, he couldn’t deflect the pass. The thing was, it looked like Crabtree couldn’t catch it either.

The pass was high—just above his chest and over his right shoulder. It was such an awkward spot; there was no way the wide receiver could make that catch!

Then, Scandrick watched as Crabtree raised his hands near his shoulders and turned clockwise. As if plucking the wind from the air, his hands shot out, snagged the ball, and secured it. Following the momentum of his turn, he ran straight out of bounds!

”AH! AHHHHH!” Chris Wilson suddenly erupted, springing to his feet like a tightly coiled spring that had just been released. He jumped high, pointing a finger at the field—though at who, it was impossible to tell—and just screamed, eyes wide. ”AHHHHHH!”

But behind the screams, Chris was roaring internally: ’He caught it! He caught it! Goddamn it, that’s a catch! And he got out of bounds! That pass was fucking incredible! Let’s go, keep pushing! Go, 49ers, go!’

But none of the words came out, turning instead into a primal roar. ”AHHHHH!”

”Snap, drop back, pass!” Troy was like a fully drawn bow, his body tensed to the absolute limit and twisted into a strange posture as he roared into the microphone. ”It’s a pass! 49ers quarterback Lu Ke passes instantly, without a moment’s hesitation! The Cowboys’ defensive line doesn’t even have time to react before the ball is out!”

”To the left, he’s throwing to the left! Lu Ke challenges the one-on-one matchup on the left, Crabtree against Scandrick. It’s tight coverage, no penalty, no blown assignment, and the ball is in the air! Oh, my God, it’s a back-shoulder throw! A back-shoulder throw! Lu Ke makes the pass, and Crabtree makes the catch!”

Troy could no longer control himself, his voice growing sharp and piercing, but the words kept pouring out without a pause.

”Feet! Crabtree gets both feet in! Both feet are in-bounds, no doubt about it, no question! That is a legal catch! It’s a catch! In that one-on-one, Crabtree had almost no room to work with. With even the slightest bit of space, Scandrick was right there waiting to break up the pass or even make an interception. But Lu Ke went with a back-shoulder throw, taking Scandrick out of the play and connecting with Crabtree! Unbelievable! My God, just unbelievable!”

The so-called ”back-shoulder shadow pass” sounds more mysterious than it is.

When a wide receiver is facing the quarterback with the sideline to his right, the quarterback will throw the ball toward the receiver’s right shoulder. The receiver then uses the momentum of his turn to make the catch as the ball descends. It gets its name because the catch is made in the ”shadow” behind the right shoulder.

Such a pass is thrown away from the defender on the wide receiver’s other side. At the same time, after the receiver turns, his body naturally shields the defender, helping him secure the catch. More importantly, the receiver can use his momentum to run directly out of bounds.

This technique demands pinpoint accuracy from the quarterback. A little too high, and the ball sails out of bounds. A little too low, and it hits the receiver’s right shoulder. It also requires incredible chemistry between the quarterback and receiver. The timing, velocity, and angle must all be perfect. If any one of these elements is off, the likely result is an incomplete pass.

”Incredible! Lu Ke completes an incredibly difficult pass, keeping the 49ers’ drive alive under nearly impossible circumstances! Twelve yards! A full twelve-yard gain for an easy first down, and he gets out of bounds to stop the clock! What more could you ask for?”

Troy offered a quick summary before exclaiming in amazement, ”The pace of this offense is just too fast, you barely have time to blink. Let’s look at Lu Ke’s release time—1.93 seconds! My God, the Cowboys’ defenders had no time to react before the quarterback had already gotten the ball out.”

”This whole play was just spectacular! Scandrick played great defense, Crabtree made a great catch, but Lu Ke’s throw was even better!” Troy paused, trying to find the right words in his head, but the simplest, most effective one was all that came out. ”Spectacular! It was truly spectacular! My God, I can’t breathe!”

”Hurry up, hurry up!” Lu Ke waved his hands frantically, motioning his teammates to the line. Everyone rushed to their own forty-two-yard line and quickly set up in formation. The plays in Lu Ke’s mind were cycling at the speed of a maglev train.

The Dallas Cowboys changed their defensive formation again, switching to man-to-man coverage. Four defenders matched up with four receivers. No matter how Lu Ke shifted his players, their assigned defenders stuck with them, maintaining tight coverage without any lapse in focus.

The question was how they assigned those defenders: two cornerbacks and two linebackers.

What did that mean? It meant that in the box, there were only three defensive linemen and two linebackers—five players total to rush the passer or stop the run. In the secondary, two safeties remained deep, guarding against the threat of a long pass.

This was one of the major changes between the first and second half: Lu Ke’s ability to strike deep forced the Cowboys to be more cautious. They had to shift their defensive focus.

Lu Ke’s eyes fell on Demarcus Ware and Sean Lee, the heart and soul of the Cowboys’ defensive front. Both men were laser-focused, their eyes sharp as they stared intently at Lu Ke, posturing as if they were about to bring a heavy blitz.

’But are they really blitzing?’

With his 75-point pre-snap read ability, Lu Ke sensed something was off, but he couldn’t make a more precise read. So, Lu Ke decided to trust his gut. ”Hike!”

The offensive line, defensive line, receivers, and defensive backs all exploded into motion, a chaotic flurry of movement. The sharp CRACK of pads colliding filled the air.

Ware and Lee didn’t take their eyes off Lu Ke for a second. The moment the ball was snapped, they both dropped back. This wasn’t a blitz; it was a full-coverage scheme for short and intermediate routes. Combined with the man-to-man assignments, the Cowboys had the passing lanes completely blanketed, returning to the successful strategy they’d used in the first half.

As he was still backpedaling, Ware’s pupils suddenly contracted. Lu Ke was dropping back, still dropping back... and then he turned for a fake handoff.

’But why a play-action now? Everyone knows it’s a fake. He has to pass! With just over sixty seconds left, a run play would burn too much clock. The offense can’t afford to waste a single second; passing is the only viable option. A play-action fake is completely pointless.’

’Wait, this isn’t play-action!’

They were in the Pistol Formation, not the Shotgun. Marcus was lined up right next to Lu Ke. This was a real handoff. Lu Ke was giving the ball to Marcus Lynch!

”Fuck! Fuck!” Ware cursed viciously, gritting his teeth.

Who would have thought that with sixty-two seconds left on the clock—after the first down play took only four seconds—the San Francisco 49ers’ rookie quarterback would actually call a run play? Was that incredibly bold, or incredibly conservative?

Either way, Ware and Lee had misread the play. By dropping back to defend the pass, they had weakened the run defense, leaving the entire line of scrimmage wide open for the offense.

”Shit!” was all Ware heard Lee curse before they both took off sprinting toward Marcus. But it was too late.

Marcus clutched the football, took a quick glance with his peripheral vision, and saw a massive hole to his right. The Cowboys’ defensive line hadn’t rushed; in fact, they’d created distance. The gap was as wide as a canyon. For Marcus, it was a wide-open highway.

Like a charging bull, Marcus rumbled diagonally toward the right.

A cornerback lunged for him, but Ted Ginn Jr. was there in time to make the block. A linebacker closed in, but Marcus hit another gear, accelerating away. The linebacker only managed to slap his shoulder, unable to wrap him up before falling to the turf. A safety rushed in, but Marcus didn’t flinch. He kept sprinting diagonally to the right, lowered his body, and slammed his shoulder into the defender, using the impact to power his way further to the right.

Behind him, Marcus could see a long trail of players, like the tail of a kite. But the Cowboys’ defense had been a step slow on the play, and now everything else was a step slow, too.

Marcus didn’t get greedy. He ran straight out of bounds, stopping the clock himself while picking up ten yards. It was exactly ten yards, just past the red first-down marker on the sideline, and then he was safely out.

First down. Out of bounds. Clock stopped. Time elapsed: six seconds.
